Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), published in Nature Astronomy, show that LHS 3844 b is a dark, airless planet with a surface resembling Mercury or the Moon. This discovery marks a turning point, as astronomers begin to probe not just atmospheres, but the geology of distant worlds. A DARK AND AIRLESS WORLD COMES INTO FOCUS Located about 48.5 light-years from Earth, LHS 3844 b orbits a small red dwarf star at extreme proximity, completing a full orbit in just 11 hours. The planet is tidally locked, meaning one side permanently faces its star, enduring temperatures near 1000 Kelvin. Using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on JWST, scientists measured the planetâs heat emission and separated it from the starâs light, allowing a direct look at its surface properties. The results, published in Nature Astronomy, reveal no detectable atmosphere, leaving the surface fully exposed to the harsh environment of space. âThanks to the amazing sensitivity of JWST, we can detect light coming directly from the surface of this distant rocky planet. We see a dark, hot, barren rock, devoid of any atmosphere,â said Laura Kreidberg of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. This breakthrough shows that it is now possible to study the surfaces of rocky exoplanets directly, opening a new frontier in planetary science. Without an atmosphere to obscure observations, the data provides a rare and unobstructed view of the planetâs composition and thermal behavior. PEERING BENEATH THE SURFACE WITH INFRARED LIGHT To understand what covers the planet, researchers analyzed infrared light between 5 and 12 micrometers, producing a spectrum that reveals the chemical and physical nature of the surface. Callais and the false narrative that the Supreme Court majority was motivated by the midterm elections. The case barring racial gerrymandering was the capstone of years of opinions from figures from Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and others to restore a colorblind constitution. Here is the column: The Supreme Courtâs decision in Louisiana v. Callais, barring racial gerrymandering, has many on the left feigning vapors, despite the predictions of many of us that this result was likely. While figures such as Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) declared that the court itself has been âgerrymanderedâ to rig the upcoming elections, this decision is actually the culmination of decades of jurisprudence by various justices â particularly Chief Justice John Roberts. Indeed, the decision will cement the legacy of the Roberts Court in moving the country toward a colorblind system of laws. Like most Americans, Roberts abhors racial discrimination in any form. He holds the quaint idea that when the drafters of the 14th Amendment barred discrimination on the basis of race, they meant it. This is why, in 2006, Roberts famously wrote, âIt is a sordid business, this divvying us up by race.â Roberts sees no difference between such discrimination when it disfavors one or another race. It is all a sordid business, and he has spent decades writing eloquent arguments for the court to abandon its conflicted and hypocritical approach to racial discrimination. The court has struggled to rationalize using race to discriminate when it serves a higher purpose, such as greater equity or affirmative action. Some of those opinions were constitutionally incomprehensible. For example, in 2003, in Grutter v. Bollinger, the court divided five to four on whether to uphold racial admissions criteria used to achieve âdiversityâ in a class at the University of Michigan Law School. However, in her opinion with the majority, Ju... [Truncated]",

Credit: PHAROSShare this post Share on X Send through Whatsapp Copy the link More than 1,600 years after its disappearance, massive stones from the Lighthouse of Alexandria are being recovered from the Mediterranean seabed. Archaeologists have brought up massive stone blocks tied to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. In the waters off Alexandria, asubmerged site known for decades is now yielding some of its most striking elements. The PHAROS project reports that22 monumental stone blocks linked to the lighthouse have been lifted from the seabed after years of underwater exploration. Build in the3rd century BCE, the lighthouse guided ships through dangerous coastal waters for centuries before its destruction. Its remains, scattered underwater, are now being carefully documented and analyzed. HUGE STONE BLOCKS PULLED FROM THE DEPTHS The recovered elements include lintels, doorjambs, thresholds and paving slabs. Each block weighs between 70 and 80 tons, reflecting the scale of the original structure. The team led by Isabelle Hairy at the CNRS explains that these pieces likely formed part of the lighthouseâs monumental entrance, where architectural styles combined Egyptian and Greek influences. A major step came in 1994, when archaeologist Jean-Yves Empereur led a campaign that identified and cataloged more than 3,300 objects. Among them were sphinxes, obelisks, columns and granite blocks, all spread across the seabed and linked to the l... [Truncated]",

There are crossword books, ginkgo capsules, omega-3 supplements, branded brain training apps, and several shelves of memory products built around the implicit promise that the right regimen, faithfully maintained, will keep the mind from slipping. The marketing is reassuring. The marketing is also, on the available evidence, only a small part of the picture. The actual research on people who stay genuinely sharp into their 80s and 90s points elsewhere. The protective factor is less a regimen than a disposition. The people who hold onto their cognitive edge for decades are usually the people who never stopped being interested. They keep learning unfamiliar things. They tolerate the discomfort of confusion. They allow the world, on a more or less daily basis, to surprise them. WHAT THE SYNAPSE PROJECT FOUND One of the cleanest demonstrations of this comes from the Center for Vital Longevity at the University of Texas at Dallas, run for many years by the late psychologist Denise Park. Her teamâs Synapse Project randomly assigned 221 adults aged 60 to 90 to spend 15 hours per week, for three months, on one of several activities. Some learned digital photography. Some learned quilting. Some learned both. Others were assigned to socialize, listen to classical music, or perform familiar low-demand cognitive tasks. The results were striking. The participants who learned a genuinely new and demanding skill showed measurable gains in episodic memory at the end of the three months. The participants in the comfortable conditions, including the social ones, did not. The benefit was not in being busy or being social. The benefit was in struggling, productively, with something the brain had not done before. Parkâs own summary of the result became something of a slogan in the field. When you are inside your comfort zone, she wrote, you may be outside your enhancement zone. The brain seems to need not just stimulation but unfamiliar stimulation, the kind that forces it to... Thereâs a lot more scripting now, and with full-on web apps running directly inside the browser, the web is a very different place from what it was 20 years ago. Duh. But all of this comes at a cost: speed. Web pages are heavier, and our network speeds, browsers, and servers all have to work harder to make browsing feel as instant as it was always supposed to feel. Thereâs a lot of work going into that, though I admit most of it seems to be in the âmake loading fasterâ camp rather than the âmaybe stop making websites weigh as much as an operating systemâ camp. Caching, CDNs, compression, lazy loading, smarter JavaScript delivery, and now... prerendering. Google founder Sergey Brin has launched â and largely funded â two ballot initiatives that take direct aim at the tax proposal. One of Brinâs countermeasures would ban taxes on personal property, including retroactive taxes. (The billionaire tax proposes seizing 5% of the wealth and assets of its targets). If it receives more votes than the billionaire tax, then under state law, it would prevail. The other countermeasure would require audits of new taxes, and would require the proceeds from the billionaire tax to be spent on education â not on health care. That would prevent the SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, the powerful union that launched the billionaire tax, from benefiting from it. 4 Google founder Sergey Brin has launched â and largely funded â two ballot initiatives that take direct aim at the proposal Getty Images for Breakthrough Prize 4 One of Brinâs countermeasures would ban taxes on personal property, including retroactive taxes. Zak Bennett for New York Post Brin is fighting fire with fire. And he should be commended for it. He has left the state â one of many rich Californians who left as soon as the billionaire tax was proposed, because it is retroactive to the first of this year. Gavin Newsom defends the stateâs record on fighting theft. An exclusive holiday gathering just north of San Francisco reportedly turned into a stomach-churning fiscal nightmare for California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Back in December, Newsom and Google co-founder Sergey Brin attended the same \"treehouse party\" hosted by crypto investor Chris Larsen. It was there, according to a Bloomberg report, that Brin broke the news that he would be leaving the state in response to a proposed wealth tax. According to the report, it was a tense, private confrontation so jarring that Newsom reportedly complained about a \"lingering cold\" he attributed to the interaction for months afterward. This usually means setting up a nice OpenBSD installation for Xfce, Fedora for GNOME, and less often others for some of the more niche desktop environments. Since GNOME 50 was just released, guess whoâs time in the round is up? Since everybodyâs already made up their mind about their preferred desktop eons ago, with upsides and downsides debated far past their expiration date, Iâm not particularly interested in reviewing desktop environments or Linux distributions. However, after asking around on Fedi, it seemed there was quite a bit of interest in an article detailing how I set up GNOME, what changes I make to the defaults, which extensions I use, what tweaks I apply, and so on. Of course, everything described in this article is highly personal, and Iâm not arguing that this is the optimal way to tweak GNOME, that the extensions I use are the best ones, or that any visual modifications I make are better than whatever defaults GNOME uses. No, my goal with this article is twofold: one, to highlight that GNOME is a lot more configurable, extensible, and malleable than common wisdom on the internet would have you believe. Itâs not KDE or one of those cobbled-together tiling Wayland desktops, but itâs definitely not as rigid as you might think. And two, that GNOME is good, actually. Tools of the trade The first thing I do is install a few crucial tools that make it easier to modify and tweak GNOME. I really dislike lists in articles, but I will begrudgingly use one here: GNOME Tweaks: this tool gives you easy access to some hidden settings, most notably to easily switch themes.Extension Manager: the easiest way to find, install, update, and manage GNOME extensions. With this application, you wonât need to use the browser for extensions at all.dconf Editor: a tool to fiddle with even more obscure GNOME settings.Add Water: an application with an odd name, designed entirely to eas... Led by researcher Vera Vasas, who has spent years studying animal vision, this innovative project is changing how we understand what animals actually see. In collaboration with colleagues from the Hanley Color Lab at George Mason University, Vasas has developed a tool that lets us experience the world through the eyes of different species. HOW ANIMALS SEE COLOR Animals perceive color through photoreceptor cells in their eyes, and the number and type of these cells can vary widely among species. While humans have three types of cone cells sensitive to red, green, and blue light, many animals have additional types that allow them to see colors beyond our visible spectrum. Birds, for instance, often have superior color vision compared to humans. They possess tetrachromatic vision, which includes the ability to see ultraviolet light. This extra range is crucial for behaviors like selecting mates and finding food. Many insects, like bees, also see ultraviolet light, helping them detect patterns on flowers that are invisible to us. REDS, GREENS, AND ANIMAL COLORS On the other hand, mammals such as dogs and cats have dichromatic vision. They canât distinguish between red and green, much like humans with red-green color blindness. This reduced color perception limits their ability to see the full spectrum of colors that we can, affecting how they interact with their surroundings. Understanding these differences is essential for studying animal behavior and ecology. But until now, visualizing how animals see the world has been a significant challenge. False color imaging has offered glimpses into animal vision but comes with drawbacks. Itâs time-consuming, requires specific lighting conditions, and canât capture movement effectively. These limitations have made it tough for scientists and filmmakers to represent animal vision accurately. Addressing these hurdles, Vasasâs team developed a cutting-edge camera and software system capable of recording and processing videos under natural lighting conditions. This means we can now see colors just... [Truncated]",

Earlier this year, Anthropic unveiled a preview version of Mythos, its upcoming AI model that it claimed was simply too dangerous to make available to the wider public. As part of an early access program, the company allowed around 50 businesses and organizations to test it out, saying it was giving them a fighting chance to get ahead of a potential cybersecurity crisis in the making. According to Anthropicâs own researchers, Mythos is powerful enough to identify and exploit sweeping cybersecurity vulnerabilities, potentially giving hackers a major advantage. In fact, the company admitted last week that it was investigating a potential unauthorized access to its Mythos model. The alleged risks appear to have spooked even the White House. As the Wall Street Journal reports, Trump administration officials said they oppose Anthropicâs plan to expand access to Mythos to roughly 70 additional companies and organizations, citing security concerns. One source told the newspaper that Mythos would suck up too many computing resources, which could hamper the US governmentâs ability to use it effectively, a claim Anthropic has since denied. Itâs a strange new development in Anthropicâs shaky relationship with the Department of Defense. The two have been caught in a surprisingly ... [Truncated]",

It circles every 50.8 days and has at least six times Earthâs mass. That makes it one of the closest known worlds where liquid water might be possible, if it has a stable atmosphere. So is it close? In space terms, yes, but it is still about 63 trillion miles away, so this is a telescope story, not a travel story. The takeaway is that GJ 887d is now a more solid target for future atmosphere searches. A CALM STAR WITH A BUSY PLANETARY SYSTEM GJ 887, also called Gliese 887 and Lacaille 9352, is a cool âred dwarfâ that puts out only a few percent of the Sunâs light. That low energy shifts the habitable zone inward. Planets can orbit quickly and still be potentially temperate. READ MORE: A POTENTIALLY HABITABLE SUPER-EARTH HAS BEEN DISCOVERED JUST 10 LIGHT YEARS AWAY, AND THE BIG QUESTION OF WHAT MIGHT BE WAITING FOR US OUT THERE RETURNS WITH A VENGEANCE In the new analysis, GJ 887d orbits about 20 million miles from its star, closer than Mercury is to the Sun, yet receives about 80% of the energy Earth gets. The same data confirm three other planets on tighter orbits, plus a weaker extra signal that could be another small planet. The team says that last signal needs more data. HOW SCIENTISTS SPOTTED THE WOBBLE The work comes from an international team led by astronomer C. Hartogh at the Institute of Astrophysics and Geophysics at the University of Göttingen, with partners including the University of St Andrews and Italyâs National Institute for Astrophysics. Their paper, âRedDots: multiplanet system around M dwarf GJ 887 in the solar neighborhood,â reanalyzed existing observations and added new ones to test whether the 51-day signal was real. They used the... [Truncated]",

Even more surprisingly, it charges faster as it gets larger, hinting at a radically different future for energy storage. Credit: SciTechDaily.com SCIENTISTS HAVE BUILT A QUANTUM BATTERY THAT COULD MAKE CHARGING ALMOST INSTANT. Australian researchers have achieved a major milestone in energy storage by designing and testing what is believed to be the worldâs first proof-of-concept quantum battery. Scientists say this emerging technology could reshape how energy is stored and delivered, potentially leading to devices that charge at extremely high speeds. First Quantum Battery Breakthrough The project was led by CSIRO in partnership with the University of Melbourne and RMIT, with the findings published in Nature Light: Science & Applications. Researchers from the University of Melbourne, including Associate Professor James Hutchison and Professor Trevor Smith, played key roles in the work. âSimilar to conventional batteries, quantum batteries charge, store, and discharge energy. But while everyday batteries rely on chemical reactions, quantum batteries leverage properties of quantum mechanics,â Associate Professor Hutchison said. âThe advantage of quantum is that the system absorbs light in a single, giant âsuper absorptionâ event and this charges the battery faster.â The worldâs first fully functioning proof-of-concept quantum battery. Credit: CSIROUltrafast Laser Experiments Confirm Charging Speed To verify the prototypeâs performance, the team conducted experiments at the Universityâs Ultrafast Laser Laboratory in the School of Chemistry. Using advanced spectroscopy methods, they were able to observe and confirm the systemâs rapid charging behavior. âThe unique capabilities of our Ultrafast Laser Lab, including dual femtosecond laser amplifiers and tunable optical parametric amplifiers, wer... Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3â7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.
For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles â output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
- **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
- If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // â CHANGED TO ##
Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
