Iran war, oil prices put Trump in increasingly vulnerable position Added: Mar 20, 2026
The Memo: Frustrated Trump struggles against perception that he’s losing control of Iran war

A tide of political danger is rising around President Trump as criticism grows that he may be losing control of the war in Iran. The conflict that he started almost three weeks ago, in conjunction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was a war of choice. But even a weakened regime in Tehran still has some choices of its own. The way it exercises those options has already inflicted economic pain on the United States and the world — and caused Trump real problems. Within the past 24 hours, global energy prices were given yet another jolt by attacks and counterattacks in the Middle East. Later, multiple media outlets reported that an American F-35 fighter jet had to make an emergency landing amid suspicions it had been hit by Iranian fire. In the first instance, Israel hit the huge South Pars gas field off the coast of Iran, from which the Islamic Republic is estimated to derive around three-quarters of all its gas. In retaliation, Iran hit a Qatari natural gas processing complex, as well as oil refineries in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Those events roiled energy markets and spurred Trump onto social media. He wrote on Truth Social that Israel had struck "out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East,” then claimed that the United States “knew nothing” about the attack — an assertion met with doubt among some experts and contradicted by reporting later Thursday from The Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Trump pledged there would be no further Israeli attacks on the gas field unless Iran escalated in Qatar. But if Tehran instead chose the latter course, the U.S. would “blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen," he wrote. The markets remain highly volatile. The price of Brent crude oil spiked to more than $118 after the attacks, although it tapered off to around $107 by approximately 5 p.m. EDT Thursday. Just one month ago, the price was roughly $70. The rise in oil prices has been reflected in prices at the pump for Americans. The national average for a gallon of gas was $3.88 on Thursday, according to AAA. That’s an increase of approximately 95 cents since a month ago. There are also worries about a broader rise in inflation, driven by rising fuel costs. Trump played down the price increases while meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House on Thursday. “I thought it would be worse — much worse, actually,” Trump told reporters. “It’s not bad, and it’s going to be over with pretty soon.” But others see political peril looming. Grant Reeher, a professor of political science at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, said that although much of the reaction to the conflict so far has been bifurcated along partisan lines, “I do think it’s a particular moment of danger [for Trump]. Up to now, there has been this drip-drip-drip erosion in the president’s support. This one, to me, has more of a potential to open up a floodgate.” Reeher cited the key pitfalls as being the price of oil and its ramifications, the potential negative knock-on effects on financial markets, and the possibility of the conflict expanding across the region or dragging on. Trump’s political vulnerability is also made more acute because the war has never been popular. In this regard it is different even from the most contentious conflicts of the modern era. The wars in Iraq and, a generation before, in Vietnam enjoyed broad public support initially, even though this backing eroded enormously over time. Further aggravating the political turmoil for Trump are the tensions the conflict has wrought within his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. The extent of the split is hotly debated, and Trump loyalists point to polls that show an overwhelming majority of MAGA backers support the military operation in Iran. That being said, criticism from usually Trump-friendly media figures including Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly and Joe Rogan will at least reach the president’s base in a way more liberal critiques do not. The debate on the right was sharpened further when Trump’s National Counterterrorism Center director, Joe Kent, quit over the war earlier this week. His letter of resignation alleged that Israeli officials and American media figures had conspired to “deceive” Trump into war. That being said, some more mainstream Republicans look at the fractious intra-MAGA debates with skepticism. “Much of that space has people whose strongly held principles are actually very malleable, saw something in Trump that wasn’t there, or both,” said Doug Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee. "If elected Republicans flip, that will tell us more than a staffer resigning and then doing interviews." Heye also said that it remained “too early to tell” whether events in Iran were slipping out of Trump’s grasp. The war will reach its three-week mark Saturday. To be sure, it is possible that conditions on the ground could change in Trump’s favor, perhaps abruptly. If American and Israeli airstrikes were to succeed in unblocking the vital Strait of Hormuz, Iran would be deprived of one of its last and strongest cards. The regime itself could teeter, too. During the White House meeting with Takaichi, both Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trump himself suggested they were seeing “defections” from the ruling regime in Tehran and its military ranks. Bessent even predicted that “the regime will probably collapse within itself,” though Trump did not appear to explicitly endorse this claim. In the meantime, Trump and his allies are berating the media for what they see as insufficient attention being paid to the successes of the war effort. During a media briefing Thursday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth complained about a “dishonest and anti-Trump press,” which he said acted “to downplay progress, amplify every cost and call into question every step.” “We’re winning decisively and on our terms,” Hegseth insisted. But with no sign yet of Iran’s overall governing structure crumbling, traditional U.S. allies stiff-arming Trump’s request for help on the Strait of Hormuz and gas prices rising at home, that message isn’t one that most Americans are endorsing. An Economist/YouGov poll earlier this week asked whether people approved or disapproved of how Trump was handling the situation in Iran. Only 36 percent of respondents approved. Fifty-six percent disapproved. That’s bad news for the White House by any measure. The Memo is a reported column by Niall Stanage.

Google which had reportedly decided to abstain from military work in the year 2018 is now rebuilding its relationship with the Defense Department. According to a report in the New York Times, as Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei clashed with the Department of Defense last month over the use of artificial intelligence in warfare, a top Google executive quietly met with Pentagon officials. As per the report, on February 26, Google Cloud CEO Thomas sat down with Emil Michael, the Pentagon official in charge of selecting AI tools for the Defense Department to pitch the company as defense partner.. Google is said to already have business with the Pentagon, and Kurian offered a reliable, expanded supply of some of the best AI tools on the market. The Defense Department had also reportedly agreed to expand its use of Google’s technology, adding the company’s autonomous systems known as AI agents to its unclassified networks. The deal was publicly announced last week. In a blog post, Google said, 'Google has expanded its partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense by launching an AI agent builder on the GenAI.mil portal. The tool enables civilian and military personnel to develop custom AI agents for unclassified tasks such as document drafting and project planning using natural language prompts, without requiring coding skills.'Similarly, according to a report in Business Insider, Google told employees that it was confident its work with the Department of Defense aligned with the company's AI principles — and that it was 'leaning more' into securing national security work with governments. Leaders told employees that Google was pursuing more contracts in areas like cybersecurity and biosecurity.Everyone at Pentagon not convinced with GoogleThe report says that despite Google's reported offer for partnership with the Defense Department, some officials are not very keen on it. There is reportedly reluctance among some Pentagon officials to rely on Google. One of the reasons is because the company dropped a military contract in 2018 in response to protests from employees who argued that AI should not be used in weapons. In June 2018, Google decided not to renew its Defense Department contract for Project Maven, a Pentagon program that seeks to advance AI capabilities that could be used to improve targeting of drone strikes. The announcement came after in April 2018, about 4,000 Google employees signed a letter petitioning CEO Sundar Pichai to end the company’s involvement in Project Maven because “Google should not be in the business of war,” the letter read.In Pentagon vs Anthropic case as well, several top AI researchers at Google, as well as at OpenAI, have signed a legal briefing to support two lawsuits that Anthropic has filed against the Defense Department. More than 100 Google employees urged the company’s leadership to adopt the same red lines as Anthropic. Employees at OpenAI and Google, including a top Google AI executive, Jeff Dean, filed a court brief in support of Anthropic’s lawsuit against the government. “If allowed to proceed, this effort to punish one of the leading U.S. AI companies will undoubtedly have consequences for the United States’ industrial and scientific competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence and beyond,” the employees said in the filing. “These concerns require a response,” they added. On its part, Anthropic last week challenged the Pentagon for designating it a supply chain risk. The participation of Google employees in the legal briefing added to some officials’ concerns about the company, reminding decision makers in the Pentagon and elsewhere of the past protests against the use of AI in weapons. Some Trump administration officials reportedly are worried that even if Google agrees to have its AI used widely, the company may bow out again under pressure from its employees.

A 103-Year-Old Woman Says This Simple Habit Is The Secret To A Long Life — And Research Backs Her Up | YourTango Added: Mar 20, 2026
A 103-Year-Old Woman Says This Simple Habit Is The Secret To A Long Life — And Research Backs Her Up
Site: YourTango
A 103-year-old woman credits one simple daily habit for helping her stay healthy and optimistic well into her later years: staying positive, and research supports her perspective.
The Population Division of the United Nations posted data regarding the increasing number of centenarians (people living to at least 100 years old), revealing that the number of centenarians living in the U.S. has doubled over the past two decades. Some centenarians credit their long life in part to a key personality trait that has kept them moving forward in more ways than just living — they like to think positively. A 103-year-old woman says positivity is the secret to a long life, and research backs her up. Danie Franco / Unsplash Two centenarians both revealed that a 'positive outlook' was the secret sauce to living past 100. A 103-year-old woman named Roslyn Menaker told The Guardian that “happiness, joy, appreciation [and] a positive outlook” have helped her reach centenarian status. Another centerenarian Ruth Sweedler, also 103, told CNBC t hat she was often praised for her positive attitude growing up. “When I walked into a classroom, my teacher would say, ‘Good morning, sunshine!’ Because I was so cheerful,” she said. David Watson, a former professor of personality psychology at the University of Notre Dame, commented on these statements, adding his own thoughts on the secret to longevity to the mix. Based on the personality theory regarding the Five Factor Model, which claims there are five categories in which personality traits lie, Watson claims that positivity, along with conscientiousness, are the most closely linked to longevity in age. Conscientiousness is defined by having good impulse control, high levels of thoughtfulness, and determination. Conscientious people tend to be organized and mindful of details. The reason that conscientiousness is closely linked to longevity is that conscientious people are most likely to take better care of themselves. “Conscientious people don’t do stupid things, so they have lower rates of accidents and better health behaviors,” Watson says. Additionally, they may do better in drinking in moderation or following healthy eating habits than others. RELATED: People Who Live Well Into Their 80s & Beyond Usually Do These 3 Things In Their Spare Time, According To Science Being conscientious is also a trait linked to longevity. Watson reveals that there are workshops that seek to increase a person’s ability to self-regulate and increase their conscientiousness, so hope is not lost! You may be able to increase your conscientiousness as you age and increase your age by doing so. “The basic idea is if you want to increase your conscientiousness, act more conscientiously, and the attitude follows the behavior,” he said. “Try to be on time for things. Follow through on things.” Having a positive attitude factors into the equation as well. According to a study published in 2019 , positive thinking can result in an 11–15% longer lifespan and a stronger likelihood of living to age 85 or older. It was also reported that, in previous studies, positive people were less likely to suffer from chronic diseases and die prematurely. This isn’t far off from what Watson had to say on the subject of a positive personality having a positive effect on one’s health. “Psychologically healthy people have a quicker recovery time,” he said. “They can tell themselves, ‘This is not that big of a deal.’ They find ways to bring themselves back into that equilibrium.” Simple mindset shifts that boost positivity and consciousness could add years to your life, even helping you reach centenarian status.
