How Kristi Noem finally lost Trumpâs trust
Site: The Hill
Kristi Noemâs assertion at a Senate hearing Tuesday that President Trump had given his blessing to a $220 million Department of Homeland Security (DHS) advertising campaign promoting Noemâs leadersâŚ
Kristi Noemâs assertion at a Senate hearing Tuesday that President Trump had given his blessing to a $220 million Department of Homeland Security (DHS) advertising campaign promoting Noemâs leadership was the final straw that cost the DHS secretary her job on Thursday, according to Republican senators and other sources familiar with the events. Trump considered firing Noem after the fatal shootings of two protesters by federal officers in Minneapolis in January, but he held off because he didnât want to appear as giving in to Democratsâ demands for her resignation, according to sources familiar with Trumpâs deliberations. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on Thursday acknowledged that conversations about Noemâs future had been going on for âa while.â âThereâs been conversations going on, I think, for a while and I havenât been privy to all of them but Iâm aware of some of the discussions,â he said. One GOP senator who requested anonymity said that Noemâs claim that Trump personally approved the controversial ads was the âlast strawâ because it had the effect of âdraggingâ the president into a potential scandal. The $220 million taxpayer-funded advertising campaign has come under scrutiny because the Department of Homeland Security skipped the normal competitive bidding process and awarded the ad to the Strategy Group, a firm that has ties to Noemâs political operation. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, said the appearance that Noem may have steered business to friends and allies is troubling. âI think there are appearances weâll have to work through,â he said. âIâve got to believe some of those factors weighed into the ultimate decision in the White House." âIt certainly looks bad,â he said. Tillis said he didnât buy Noemâs explanation that she was not closely involved in awarding the contract given that she has established a policy at the Department of Homeland Security requiring her to personally review all contracts worth more than $100,000. âThe problem is she undermined her own credibility by saying she reviews everything in detail ⌠but she knew nothing about a $200 million transaction. How do you work those two?â he said. Republican lawmakers were further alarmed when they received word that Noem had refused to cooperate with the Department of Homeland Securityâs inspector general when he tried to investigate the matter, according to Senate GOP sources. âWeâve received communication from the DHS IG that heâs not getting cooperation in his investigation,â a Republican senator told The Hill, explaining why Noemâs advertising campaign began ringing alarm bells among GOP senators on Capitol Hill. The issue was thrust into the spotlight Tuesday when Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilled Noem over the ad, decrying it as a waste of taxpayersâ money and demanding to know if Trump had approved of it. Trumpâs allies later described the president as âlividâ and âpissedâ after Noem claimed at the hearing that Trump had indeed signed off on the massive campaign that featured Noem riding a horse in front of Mt. Rushmore. Trump called GOP senators soon after the hearing to float potential replacements for Noem, including Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), whom he announced on Thursday would be nominated to serve as the next secretary of Homeland Security. The president privately assured Senate Republicans that he would never have signed off on such a large taxpayer-funded campaign that came across to allies on Capitol Hill as a public relations exercise to bolster Noemâs image. Trump also told Reuters in an interview: âI never knew anything about it.â Some Republicans on Capitol Hill are worried that if Noem mishandled taxpayer money or violated contracting rules in awarding the advertising contract, it could provide ammo for Democratic investigators if they win back the House in the November elections. Noemâs claim that Trump knew about and approved the controversial contract would give House Democrats a reason to expand a potential investigation to include the president. Republican lawmakers say that Trump began privately signaling his displeasure with Noem over her handling of the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who was shot multiple times in the back by federal officers. Noem called Pretti âa domestic terroristâ who tried âto inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement,â despite widely circulated video footage of the incident that contradicted her claims. Trump reduced Noemâs role over the immigration enforcement operations by sending White House border czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis to take charge, effectively sidelining his secretary of Homeland Security. The White House at the time, however, fiercely disputed that Trump was backing down in the face of fierce Democratic criticism of the immigration crackdown. Trump insisted in late January that Noem was doing a âvery good job.â Asked at the time if she would step down, the president answered simply: âNo.â But in a sign that Noem had fallen out of the presidentâs favor, she remained silent at a Jan. 29 Cabinet meeting during the height of the public uproar over the Minneapolis shootings. Some White House observers saw it as a sign that her days in office were numbered. Two Republican senators, Tillis and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), called on Noem to step down as head of Homeland Security. âI think sheâs out of her depth, sheâs proven that. She doesnât know how to lead, how to de-escalate. Sheâs exposing ICE officers to dangerous situations, sheâs exposing U.S. citizens to deadly situations,â Tillis told reporters in late January. Murkowski, who voted to confirm Noem last year, said: âI would not support her again and I think it probably is time for her to step down.â âShe needs to go,â Murkowski added, pointing to Noemâs claims that Pretti was a domestic terrorist. âRhetoric like that does not help. ⌠Sheâs taken a direction that has not been helpful to the situation.â Democrats have blocked funding for the Department of Homeland Security since it lapsed on Feb. 14 and demanded a 10-point list of reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection in exchange for reopening the department. Thune on Thursday said he hopes that Trumpâs decision to replace Noem will give Democrats a compelling reason to agree to a Homeland Security funding deal. âThis move by the administration should be a major step. Thatâs one of the things theyâve all been asking for,â he said, referring to Democratic demands that Trump fire Noem.

Theyâve nearly given up on climate â plastics will be next Added: Mar 6, 2026
Theyâve nearly given up on climate â plastics will be next
Site: The Hill
Like much that comes out of the UN, it is all a ruse.
The United Nations' climate crisis express has slammed to a halt on the tracks. It's not hard to see why. The Trump administration has slashed funding for climate initiatives, yanked America out of the Paris Agreement, scrapped electric vehicle mandates, and repealed the Endangerment Finding that once underpinned sweeping regulations. On the global stage, the UN COP30 climate talks collapsed with no real international commitments to phase out fossil fuels. Meanwhile, China â the world's top greenhouse gas emitter by a long way â keeps ramping up new coal power plant construction at a blistering pace. Around the world, everyday people are fed up. In the name of saving the planet, net-zero carbon policies are driving skyrocketing energy bills, blackouts and plummeting living standards. Unelected bureaucrats pretend that, through the sacrifice of others, they can tame Earth's naturally variable climate. They have taken it upon themselves to micromanage people's lives by forcing us to abandon the fossil fuels that still provide 87 percent of global energy. So, what's next for the eco-zealots running the UN? They're pivoting to a new battlefield: the so-called "plastics crisis." In November 2025, the UN Environment Program teamed up with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to roll out the 2030 Plastics Agenda for Business. Billed as an "evidence-based" and "practical" global framework, it is really designed to morph voluntary corporate sustainability promises into binding international policies. The agenda seeks to eliminate plastic waste and pollution by rallying governments, businesses, and "stakeholders" to "catalyze market transformations," enforce standardized packaging designs, force national laws into a single "circular economy" mold, and reshape entire markets collectively. It calls for âroot causeâ solutions: eliminating unnecessary plastics, innovating toward reuse models and alternative materials, and recirculating what we still need. The real pitch? Obeisance to UN plastic directives will deliver "profound benefits" to the economy, nature, people, and societies â backed by a "shared vision" already endorsed by more than 1,200 organizations worldwide. This bureaucratic gobbledygook appeals to some. Unfortunately, like much that comes out of the UN, it is all a ruse. To grasp the UN's true playbook, one need only look at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Launched in 1988 to study how human activities and emissions might influence climate, it quickly morphed into a sprawling government-activist-industrial complex that insists humans are the primary driver of climate changeâ and that therefore our lifestyles must be heavily regulated ... by them. The point is that they need a very, very large amount of money to do this. Cue endless demands for massive budgets: $100 billion, $250 billion, $500 billion, even trillions. That money gets funneled into outfits they create, like the Green Climate Fund, to ensure that everything is done properly. Now just apply that same formula to plastics. Yes, plastic pollution is real. But roughly 80 percent of plastic wastes reaching the oceans comes from Asia â especially mismanaged waste from countries such as China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Massive population centers dump packaging and other plastics into waterways because of widespread poverty, weak governance, poor waste management infrastructure, and lack of funds for modern programs and technologies. If the UN genuinely wants to curb plastics pollution, it should strong-arm China (and others) into real action. But good luck with that. China rarely embraces binding commitments in earnest, since it is the world's biggest emitter. Plastics are essential for a vast array of items we use every day. That includes eyeglass lenses and frames, smartphones and computers, vehicle parts, synthetic fabrics, medical devices, and packaging that extends food shelf-life by fighting insects and bacteria. Plastics safeguard medicines, protect shipped goods, and deliver life-saving supplies affordably to remote areas. Plastics and plastic packaging drive the world economy, employ millions globally in numerous industries, and are essential to human nutrition, health, well-being and affordability. Actual progress to reduce the downside of the use of plastics â specifically litter â will require helping poorer countries achieve the level of development, infrastructure, incomes, and environmental responsibility that wealthy countries currently enjoy. That means UN bureaucrats and eco-activists will have to stop opposing economic development, which will by necessity include wider use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. They will have to stop dictating to poor countries what level of âecologically feasible developmentâ they will be permitted to pursue. It means providing expertise and financing to help countries become wealthier, modernize waste collection and processing, and construct waste-to-energy power plants that convert trash into affordable all-day electricity, while reclaiming glass and metals that otherwise cannot be recycled. No one wants plastic trash strewn about. But we don't need another bloated UN program to handle it by orchestrating top-down controls, market distortions, and endless funding streams. Real solutions start with better civics education, policing of bad behavior and local infrastructure where the problems actually originate â not global agendas that sidestep these hard truths. Craig Rucker is president of the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow.

US warns bombardment will 'surge dramatically' as intense Israeli strikes hit Iran and Lebanon Added: Mar 6, 2026
Trump rules out talks without Iranâs âunconditional surrenderâ as Israel strikes Lebanon
Site: WGN-TV
The war has escalated to affect more than a dozen countries across the Middle East and beyond, and has caused a spike in oil prices.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) â U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday appeared to rule out talks with Iran absent its âunconditional surrender.â Israeli warplanes bombed Beirut and Tehran as Iran launched more retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf countries on the seventh day of the war. The strikes in Lebanon were the heaviest since a 2024 ceasefire ended the last war between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, who fired rockets at Israel in the opening days of the war now underway. More than 95,000 people have fled Beirutâs suburbs and southern Lebanon after sweeping Israeli evacuation warnings. The U.S. and Israel have battered Iran with strikes, targeting its military capabilities, leadership and nuclear program. The stated goals and timelines for the war have repeatedly shifted, as the U.S. has at times suggested it seeks to topple Iranâs government or elevate new leadership from within. Russia has meanwhile provided Iran with information that could help Tehran strike the U.S. military, according to two officials familiar with U.S. intelligence on the matter. Qatarâs energy minister Saad al-Kaabi warned in an interview with the Financial Times that the war could âbring down the economies of the world,â predicting a widespread shutdown of Gulf energy exports that could send oil to $150 a barrel. The price for a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude rose above $90 for the first time in more than two years Friday, with gas prices rising 34 cents in just one week to a national average of $3.32 per gallon, according to motor club AAA. In a social media post on Friday, Trump said that after Iranâs surrender, âand the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s),â that the U.S. and its allies would help rebuild Iran, making it âeconomically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.â Those comments were likely to raise further questions about the endgame of the war launched a week ago by the United States and Israel. The war has killed at least 1,230 people in Iran, more than 200 in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel, according to officials in those countries. Six U.S. troops have been killed. Iranâs President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on social media that âsome countriesâ had begun mediation efforts in the conflict, without elaborating. On Thursday, Trump urged the Iranian people to âhelp take back your country,â promising the U.S. would grant them âimmunity,â without elaborating. Trump also told media outlets that he should be involved in choosing a replacement for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening strikes of the war. Trump spoke dismissively of Khameneiâs son, Mojtaba Khamenei â a front-runner to replace his father â calling him âa lightweight.â Iranian state television reported Friday that a leadership council had started discussing how to convene the countryâs Assembly of Experts, which will select the new supreme leader. Buildings associated with the 88-member clerical panel, have been attacked during the Israeli-American air campaign. Israel has said it would target the next supreme leader if he poses a threat. Russia has provided Iran with information that could help Tehran strike American warships, aircraft and other assets in the region, according to two officials familiar with U.S. intelligence on the matter. The people, who were not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, cautioned that the U.S. intelligence has not uncovered that Russia is directing Iran on what to do with the information. Still, itâs the first indication that Moscow has sought to get involved in the war that the U.S. and Israel launched on Iran a week ago. Israelâs military said Friday it had launched âa broad-scale wave of strikesâ on Tehran, Iranâs capital, and that over the past week it has heavily bombed an extensive underground bunker that Iranâs leaders had planned to use during the hostilities. Witnesses described Israeli airstrikes as particularly intense, shaking homes in the area and sending columns of smoke rising. Others reported explosions around the Iranian city of Kermanshah, an area that is home to multiple missile bases. They spoke anonymously for fear of retribution. Countries across the Gulf said they intercepted Iranian missiles and drones on Friday, including attacks aimed at U.S. bases. Strikes have killed at least 15 civilians, including in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Qatar and Saudi Arabia said Friday they intercepted projectiles headed toward U.S. bases. Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, where the Interior Ministry said Iranian strikes hit two hotels and a residential building, though no casualties were reported. The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait â where six U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday â also reported missiles and drones breaching their airspace. In Israel, the sound of explosions could be heard in Tel Aviv throughout Friday after warnings about missiles incoming from Iran, as air defense systems worked to intercept the barrage. Five soldiers have been wounded in the fighting with Hezbollah, Israelâs military said. Israel has carried out waves of airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah has a large presence but which is also home to hundreds of thousands of civilians. Lebanon's Health Ministry said 217 people had been killed by Israeli strikes since Monday and 798 wounded. Roads in the Lebanese capital were choked with evacuating traffic as smoke rose over the cityâs southern districts. Two hospitals evacuated patients and staff. âWhat can we do? We prayed here under the tree. During the night we slept in the car because there is no place to stay,â Jihan Shehadeh, one of the tens of thousands of displaced, said. One Israeli strike hit near the Iranian embassy in Beirut, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency. Israel's military did not immediately respond to questions about the report. Hezbollahâs military command on Friday urged its fighters not to relent and to âdefend the nation,â casting the escalating war in religious terms and calling on them to âkill them wherever you find them.â Lebanonâs Prime Minister Nawaf Salam slammed both Israel and Hezbollah, saying the Lebanese state and people âdid not choose this war.â
