Full Article Text: Brightening clouds may help mitigate global warming - Earth.comSubscribenewsvideosimagesearthpediatake actionearthsnapSubscribe 05-07-2026 MODEL SHOWS THAT BRIGHTENING CLOUDS CAN OFFSET GLOBAL WARMING ByAdrian VillellasEarth.com staff writerFollow Earth on Google As governments seek to limit air pollution, a new climate paradox has raised its head. Cleaner air means that clouds reflect less incoming solar radiation and the global temperature is likely to rise. A new study has found that marine cloud brightening could mitigate this. By modeling the effects of spraying sea salt into four cloudy Pacific Ocean zones, scientists have suggested that global average temperatures could be kept near 2020 levels, as air pollution levels decline. The result turns cleaner air into a harder climate bargain, because the same cloud fix could still leave the United States hotter and drier. CLOUDS ENTER THE TEST Inside a computer model built to mimic climate from 2020 to 2100, four cloudy Pacific Ocean zones became the testing ground for that bargain. By probing that simulated ocean, Yang Yu, a climate researcher at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), showed how falling pollution could expose hidden warming. Yu’s team kept the finding tightly focused on the idea that using cleaner energy will remove dirty particles from the atmosphere, the same particles that have been shading Earth. The model showed that marine cloud brightening may be a possible way to ensure global cooling, but regional costs kept the answer from being simple. WHY POLLUTION COOLED Air pollution harms people, yet some smoke and haze also bounces sunlight away before it can heat Earth’s surface. Scientists call these tiny airborne bits aerosols – small, suspended particles that can scatter sunlight or help clouds form. As countries chase carbon neutrality – balancing released, heat-trapping gases with removals or offsets – many of those particles fade too. Earlier work found that aerosol cuts could dominate near-term warming on that pathway, making the cleanup paradox hard to ignore. SALT SPRAY LEADS TO CLOUD BRIGHTENING Marine cloud brightening tries to replace part of that lost shade without adding soot or smog back to the air. Sprayed sea salt aerosols – microscopic salt particles from seawater – give water vapor more places to gather into droplets. Smaller droplets make clouds look whiter from above, so more incoming sunlight returns to space before warming the ocean. Cool... [Truncated]

A massive galaxy, formed less than 2 billion years after the Big Bang, appears to have no rotation at all, a trait usually seen only in much older, evolved galaxies. This challenges current theories that young galaxies should still be spinning from their formation. Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email FULL STORY A giant ancient galaxy that mysteriously doesn’t spin is rewriting what we thought we knew about how galaxies form. Credit: AI/ScienceDaily.com Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have uncovered an unexpected feature in a distant, early galaxy. Despite forming when the universe was still very young, this galaxy shows no signs of rotation. That behavior is typically seen only in very large, mature galaxies much closer to Earth, explained Ben Forrest, a research scientist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Davis, and lead author of a study published May 4 in Nature Astronomy. "This one in particular did not show any evidence of rotation, which was surprising and very interesting," Forrest said. Why Galaxies Are Expected to Spin Current models suggest that galaxies begin spinning as they form. Gas flowing inward and the pull of gravity create angular momentum, setting these systems in motion. Over billions of years, galaxies can collide and merge, especially in dense clusters. These repeated interactions can either build up or cancel out rotation. As a result, some nearby galaxies show little overall spin and instead display stars moving in random directions. Because this transformation is thought to take a very long time, it is surprising to see it in galaxy XMM-VID1-2075 when the universe was less than 2 billion years old. A Massive Galaxy That Formed Early Forrest and his colleagues, part of the MAGAZ3NE (Massive Ancient Galaxies at z>3 NEar-Infrared) survey, had already studied this galaxy using the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaiʻi. "Previous MAGAZ3NE ... [Truncated]

Researchers use molecular barcoding to discover that Alston’s singing mice evolved complex vocalizations through targeted tripling of neural projections.

Full Article Text: The Neural Shortcut to Language - Neuroscience News Researchers used molecular barcoding to reveal that Alston’s singing mice possess a selective tripling of neural projections from the orofacial motor cortex to auditory and midbrain regions, enabling complex vocal turn-taking. Credit: Neuroscience News THE NEURAL SHORTCUT TO LANGUAGE FeaturedNeuroscience·May 7, 2026 Summary: Speech is often viewed as a massive leap in brain complexity, but new research suggests that evolving complex vocalizations might be much simpler than we thought. By comparing the brains of ordinary lab mice with Alston’s singing mice, a Central American species famous for its rapid-fire vocal duets, researchers discovered that the difference isn’t a bigger brain or new regions. Instead, evolution simply tripled the number of neurons connecting the mouth-movement center to just two key areas. This “minimalist” neural adaptation may mirror the same evolutionary trick that eventually gave humans the gift of language. Key Facts The “Conversation” Parallel: Alston’s singing mice (Scotinomys teguina) perform elaborate, audible songs and take turns in rapid duets, mimicking the split-second timing of human conversation.Indistinguishable Brains: To the naked eye (and even standard brain slices), singing mouse brains look exactly like lab mouse brains. There are no new regions or gross anatomical changes.Molecular Barcoding (MAPseq): Using a high-resolution tracing technique, researchers mapped individual neurons and found that evolution targeted one specific hub: the orofacial motor cortex (OMC).The Triple-Wire Connection: The singing mouse evolved three times as many neural projections connecting the OMC to two regions:The auditory cortical region (for hearing and turn-taking).The midbrain periaqueductal gray (a universal vocal control structure). The “Playbook” for Evolution: This suggests that complex behaviors don’t require total reorganization; they can emerge from targeted refinements of existing wiring. Source: CSHL Speech is a crowning achievement of human evolution, the skill that separates us from every other animal. So, it would stand to reason that evolving this capability required some enormous leap in brain complexity. A study published today in Nature suggests otherwise. Alston’s singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina), a small rodent from the cloud forests of Central America, produces loud, elaborate songs humans can hear across a room. These mice can sing solo but often perform ra... [Truncated]

FORECAST:

Over the next 30–90 days, Republicans will likely integrate these scientific disruptions (quantum symmetry breaking, non-rotating early galaxies, marine cloud brightening paradoxes, and minimalist vocal evolution) into existing “realism” and anti-elite messaging via X influencers, congressional soundbites, and Trump-aligned media, portraying them as validation of unchanging natural laws, limits of human hubris, and skepticism toward centralized technocratic solutions to climate or society, targeting modest 10–20% base mobilization. Democrats will predominantly frame Republican usage as anti-science culture-war opportunism or pseudoscientific overreach through legacy media and academic commentary, avoiding substantive engagement on the underlying data. Legacy media will emphasize uncertainty and regional risks of cloud brightening while downplaying challenges to cosmological models; conservative outlets will amplify the theme of “the universe refuses to obey progressive models.” Broader public engagement will remain low and polling impact negligible absent a viral event, with bipartisan scientific acknowledgment possible but no meaningful policy convergence. Uncertainty is high regarding whether the non-spinning galaxy or singing-mouse neural findings gain cultural traction beyond niche science circles.

Cool... [Truncated]

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have spotted something that shouldn’t exist—at least not so early in the universe. A massive galaxy, formed less than 2 billion years after the Big Bang, appears to have no rotation at all, a trait usually seen only in much older, evolved galaxies. This challenges current theories that young galaxies should still be spinning from their formation.

[Truncated]

The Neural Shortcut to Language - Neuroscience News Researchers used molecular barcoding to reveal that Alston’s singing mice possess a selective tripling of neural projections from the orofacial motor cortex to auditory and midbrain regions, enabling complex vocal turn-taking. [Truncated]
