EVIDENCE THAT TOO MUCH AWARENESS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IS CAUSING MORE OF THEM Richard HananiaJan 26, 202613811223Share Conservatives report higher levels of mental health than liberals. Recently, Derek Thompson profiled a study by Schaffner et al. (2025) arguing that this might be due to liberals being more comfortable putting their problems in therapeutic terms. That paper begins by confirming earlier studies showing a mental health gap, which is reduced but still there when controlling for a wide variety of factors in a sample of 60,000 US adults. The authors then get a representative sample of a thousand, asking half of respondents about mood and half about mental health. The mental health difference is as expected, but there is no gap in reported mood at all. This implies that conservatives are more likely to say their mental health is fine even if they might not be any happier. Lakshya Jain responded by publishing the results of a new survey for The Argument, finding that liberals tend to do worse on a “well-being score”, which largely avoided the language of mental health but asked about things like social relationships, anxiety, and whether individuals dislike themselves. Moreover, conservatives have described themselves as happier in the General Social Survey since 1972. Peltzman (2023) includes the following graph, with happiness scores rated on a scale of -100 to 100. Figure 1 Overall, Schaffner et al. is not enough on its own to conclude that there is no mood or happiness gap based on ideology. Asking about mental health in particular may exaggerate underlying differences between conservatives and liberals, but they’re still there according to a wide body of research. If, compared to liberals, conservatives are happier, have better mental health, or whatever else we want to call it, what might be the reason for this? There are three broad possibilities: Liberalism causes poor psychological outcomes Poor psychological states cause liberalism There is some trait X that is correlated with liberalism and psychological outcomes Note that in figuring out what X might be, we are usually not talking about normal demographic correlates like age and sex, since every competent scholar is going to control for such factors. Verse
The Therapy Gods In Athens' Square Do Battle, With Razor Tongues That Carve The Mortal Soul, Where Liberals Drown In Endless Selfish Prattle, While Conservatives Keep Their Spirits Whole. The Mirror Cracks Beneath Ideologic Weight, Each Shattered Shard Reflects A Different Lie, One Side Laments And Feeds The Growing Hate, The Other Laughs And Lets The Wounds Run Dry.
Old Trump The Boar Rejects The Couch's Poison, He Spits On Navel-Gazing's Soft Disease, While Weeping Scholars Seek The Freudian Reason, For Why Their Hearts Won't Rest And Knees Won't Bend The Knees. The Couch Becomes A Brothel For The Mind, Where Every Thought Is Turned To Wound Or Vice, And Hanania Watches, Laughing Blind, At How The Weak Create Their Own Device.
Tim Urban Draws His Sticks Across The Heavens, And Asks The World Which Button They Would Press, Red Men Betray For Personal Leavens, Blue Souls Cooperate And Save The Mess. The Prisoner's Dilemma Plays In Flesh, Yet Blue Still Wins When Critical Mass Gathers, For Self-Fulfilling Tales In Turn Refresh, The Faith That Binds When Everything Else Scatters.
The Tavern Truth Rings Clearer Than Their Studies, That Culture Shapes The Pain Inside The Bone, If You Name Every Demon In Your Bloodies, The Demons Grow And Claim You For Their Own. Conservers Walk The Mud And Feel The Rain, And Call It Weather, Not Oppression's Sting, While Therapy Turns Minor Aches To Chain, And Makes Each Man The Victim Of His Thing.
What Fool Would Pay Gold Coins To Learn His Weakness, Then Wear That Weakness Like A Crown Of Thorns? The Ancient Skalds Knew Life Was Mostly Shitness, Yet Sang Through It With Horns And Wine And Scorns. The Mirror Lies When Ideology Holds The Glass, The Couch Breeds Slaves Who Love Their Pretty Shackles, While Trump The Beast Roars On And Kicks Its Ass, And Blue Still Wins Because The Tribe It Tackles.
So Raise Your Cup To Those Who Refuse The Label, Who Call Sadness Sadness, Madness Madness Plain, The Universe Cares Not For Your Fable, It Rewards The Bold Who Dance In Spite Of Pain. The Button's Pressed, The Storm Begins To Break, Cooperation Carves Its Path Through Treachery, While Therapy Culture Drowns In Its Own Lake, And Ancient Truths Still Mock Our Modern Lechery.
