Geopolitical Tensions and Power Plays

In shadowed halls where empires clash and scheme, Necessity births tools of steel and beam; While Iran’s grip on Hormuz stirs the fray, And leaders weigh the words they dare not say. From Trump to Xi, the postures tell the tale Of fragile truces in a world grown pale. Yet wisdom seeks the coalition’s hand To mend the breaches in this troubled land. *

The AI Revolution and Its Discontents

From courtrooms where old partners wage their war To server farms that hum behind closed door, The race accelerates yet sparks alarm; A backlash builds against the silicon swarm. While logic engines catch the bugs of old, And rivals strike uneasy deals for gold, We ponder if the mind we built will stay A servant still—or master of the day. *

Domestic Political Intrigue

The spotlight falls on those who claim the stage, Where paid applause and private deals engage; From primary defeats to gun-ban fights, The theater reveals its hidden lights. A mayor courts the billionaires he taxed, While old alliances collapse in faxed Exposés that thrill the watching crowd— Yet leave the public weary, disavowed. *

Scientific Wonders and Human Vulnerabilities

The brain that once grew vast now gently shrinks; Word-finding slips foretell forgotten links. While snails of iron brave the ocean floor And neurons chart an unexpected door, We learn which scents the mosquitoes crave And hear the Darwin warning, soft yet grave: Ignore the arts and beauty’s quiet grace, And slowly lose the soul’s abiding place. *

WFD can feel trivial, yet it quietly hints at how the brain ages. These verbal memory slips can help clinicians spot trouble brewing in memory networks years before other symptoms emerge. WORD-FINDING DIFFICULTY (WFD) Everyone experiences WFD occasionally, especially when tired, stressed, or distracted. That’s because language depends on a vast network of brain regions working together to pull a word from memory, match it to meaning, and send it to your mouth. A little slowdown in that system can make the word feel like it’s “on the tip of your tongue.” As people age, it’s normal to have more of these moments, but a sudden increase or very severe difficulty may signal conditions like stroke, brain injury, or early dementia. Early work at the University of Toronto and Baycrest Health Sciences ties WFD to the same neural highways that falter in Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers note that slower speech, rather than the odd lapse, tracks most closely with overall cognitive health. Beyond disease, fresh evidence links verbal fluency to longevity; adults who keep words flowing live longer than peers whose speech grows hesitant. Because everyday talk is complex, scientists break the puzzle into manageable pieces. Clues come from spontaneous pauses like “um,” “uh,” and from those frustrating “tip-of-the-tongue” moments when meaning is clear but the sound won’t surface. THREE WFD THEORIES One camp blames a global slowdown. The processing speed theory says an aging brain resembles an old laptop that needs a beat to open each file. Neural transmissions still fire, just more leisurely, leading to extra silence before the right syllable appears. Another view, the inhibition deficit hypothesis, argues that older adults struggle to hush irrelevant notions. Competing names or ideas in... [Truncated]",

In most cells, transporting these proteins is relatively simple. Neurons in the brain, however, face a significant logistical challenge because their axons, the thread-like structures that carry electrical impulses, can extend for meters. As a result, essential materials produced in the cell body must travel enormous distances to reach the ends of axon terminals. With the help of advanced cell-imaging techniques, a recent study uncovered an unconventional route that neurons adopt to deliver essential proteins. This method, known as transcytosis, delivers essential materials through an indirect route where the proteins produced in the cell body, or soma, are first transported to the cell surface and then pulled back inside the cell. By Ellyn Lapointe Published May 17, 2026, 6:00 am ET Reading time 4 minutes SpaceX completed a launch rehearsal for Starship Flight 12 on May 11, 2026. © SpaceX via X Read Later Read Later Comments (15) SpaceX is getting ready to launch the latest and greatest iteration of its super heavy-lift rocket. Starship V3 is the biggest, most powerful launch vehicle ever built, and its debut will have a transformative impact on the commercial spaceflight industry—if it doesn’t blow up. Admittedly, the rocket’s journey to the launch pad has been a little rough. The booster exploded during pre-launch testing back in November, and in April, its Raptor 3 engines did too. Considering the huge technical leap between Starship V2 and V3, it’s understandable that SpaceX ran into some issues. Now, the company is confident that it has worked out the kinks. It aims to launch Starship V3 for the first time during a launch window that opens at 6:30 p.m. ET on May 19. Ahead of the launch, SpaceX shared new details about the upgrades that put this rocket in a league of its own. Here are 3 reasons why Starship V3 will be a spaceflight game changer. 1. SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED PAYLOAD CAPACITY The rocket’s Super Heavy booster is equipped with 33 Raptor 3 engines, which together are expected to produce about 18 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, according to SpaceX. That’s nearly 10% more powerful than the previous generation of Super Heavy boosters. V3’s upper stage is equipped with six of these engines that together produce more than 3.3 million pounds of thrust. Full duration and full thrust 33-engine static fire with Super Heavy V3 pic.twitter.com/vUJTqoHEZy — SpaceX (@SpaceX) May 7, 2026 This means Starship V3 has significantly greater payload capacity. The rocket is designed to carry 100 tons of payload to low-Earth orbit, a far cry from Starship V2’s 35 tons. This increase could dramatically reduce the number of launches required for major missions, allowing SpaceX and its partners to deliver larger satellites, space station modules, lunar landers, and other heavy carg... (Evan Vucci/Pool Photo via AP) The Trump-Xi summit concluded with vague promises for China to help. But as of now, the U.S. is losing the war with Iran. Thirty-seven days of intense airstrikes have only made the Iranian regime more hardline and the Strait of Hormuz — open and stable before the campaign began — is now under its control. The question facing the U.S. today is no longer how to win this war, but how to stop the bleeding and regain some ground — just possibly enlisting China and others in fashioning a few wins. There are three concrete priorities. The first is to build a truly international coalition to reopen the Strait. Until the world’s most important energy chokepoint is reliably open, the global economy will continue to absorb the war’s worst shocks, and Iran will continue to dictate the terms of any negotiatio... Abigail Spanberger is reportedly “fuming” this week after the state failed to get a single justice on the Supreme Court to support her after she violated the state constitution in her attempted gerrymandering of the state. However, Spanberger may have just guaranteed another trip to the Supreme Court when she said the quiet part out loud about the new state gun ban. After the Democrats took power recently, they went on a frenzy of tax and liberal legislative measures. The sharp move to the far left is out of sync with a purple state that remains roughly evenly divided. While Spanberger (who ran on being a moderate) has pushed forward many of these measures, she sought to moderate one bill banning so-called “assault firearms.” Spanberger released a statement that: “I am signing this bill into law because firearms designed to inflict maximum casualties do not belong on our streets. We are taking this step to protect families and support the law enforcement officers who work every day to keep our communities safe. While the General Assembly chose not to adopt my amendment that specifically carves out certain firearms frequently used for hunting, I will work with the patrons to clarify this language.” (emphasis added) The governor’s acknowledgment that the law covers common hunting models will likely be cited in Second Amendment challenges. If the law is not amended, she could prove the main witness against her own signed legislation. Even with such an amendment, the bill is problematic. I have previously written about my skepticism over bans on AR-15s and other so-called “assault weapons,” though some courts have upheld such bans. We have a Second Amendment protection of gun ownership, with over 490 million guns in private hands, as of 2022. In 2008, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, recognizing the Second Amendment as encompassing an individual right to bear arms. The Supreme C... [Truncated]",

Photos: Getty Images Elon Musk's surprise Anthropic deal allows him to accomplish two things at once: turn unused compute into revenue before an expected SpaceX IPO next month — and stick it to his archrival, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Why it matters: Musk went from calling Anthropic \"evil\" to doing business with it in three months, showing how quickly competition can give way to strategic necessity in the AI race. The big picture: The deal helps Anthropic address one of its most pressing problems — a severe compute deficit. The company saw \"80x growth per year in revenue and usage\" for the first quarter of 2026, CEO Dario Amodei said at a developer conference Wednesday, when it only planned for 10x. That demand spike gave the AI lab \"difficulties with compute,\" Amodei added, referencing recent usage limits that have frustrated customers.Enter SpaceX, which will provide the AI lab with the entire capacity of its Colossus 1 data center, amounting to more than 300 megawatts of new capacity (over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs) within the month.xAI, Musk's AI lab that SpaceX acquired, will continue to run off Colossus 2, a separate supercomputer.\"As part of this agreement, Anthropic also expressed interest in partnering to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity,\" SpaceX said in a blog post. The intrigue: The deal comes as Musk is embroiled in a lawsuit against OpenAI, the AI lab he co-founded that also happens to be Anthropic's biggest competitor. \"Elon's enemy is Sam. Dario's enemy is Sam. Enemy of my enemy is a compute partner,\" Ben Pouladian, who does tech market research, wrote on X.Musk publicly attacked Anthropic on X in February, calling it \"misanthropic\" in response to the AI lab announcing its $380 billion post-money valuation. (Anthropic is now expected to be valued closer to $900 billion.)Now, Musk says he \"was impressed\" after meeting with senior Anthropic leaders last week. Follow the money: It's not just... Add Axios on Google Illustration: Allie Carl/Axios If AI were a candidate for political office, it would be losing in a landslide. Why it matters: The AI hype cycle would have you believe the technology is inevitable. But AI backlash is growing, as people worry it will steal their jobs, jack up electricity rates and further enrich the wealthy, all while hurting the environment. State of play: A commencement address went viral this week after Florida real estate executive Gloria Caulfield said \"artificial intelligence is the next Industrial Revolution,\" sparking a chorus of boos from the crowd. The speaker could have avoided the jeers had she checked the latest polls: Only 18% of young people ages 14 to 29 say they feel hopeful about AI, according to a recent Gallup survey. The disdain spans generations and political parties. An Economist/YouGov poll released this week showed over 70% of Americans think AI is advancing too quickly, with 68% of Republicans and 77% of Democrats saying it's moving too fast.Other YouGov polling shows negative views of AI rising from 34% three years ago to just over 50% now. Between the lines: AI executives aren't doing much to quell the backlash, which is already showing signs of slowing the industry. Some of them appear unfazed — or unaware. In previous conversations with Axios, AI executives at multiple frontier AI labs were surprised by the negative opinions. They see AI as just as inevitable as the rise of the internet.Asked about backlash to AI, Superhuman Mail CEO Rahul Vohra — whose company makes an AI-powered email assistant — seemed unfamiliar with the premise of the question. After hearing about poor polling around AI, he responded: \"We don't really see that.\"Data: Economist/YouGov; Chart: Sara Wise/Axios What they're saying: While the tech underlying AI is here to stay, \"What is not inevitable is that these technologies will be embedded in every aspect of our lives, become indispensable, or replace humans,\" Dr. Avriel E... In their musings, blood type comes up a lot, as does the flavor of blood, or if bug attraction is something genetic or fixed. Researchers have been skeptical of those explanations for years because data regarding this is usually vague. A new review is starting to change that. The actual signals that mosquitoes follow are chemical, specific, and at times rewritten by the diseases the insects carry. MOSQUITOES AND SKIN The review, led by Professor Shengqun Deng at Anhui Medical University (AHMU) synthesizes years of work on female mosquitoes and how they select targets. Only females bite, because they need the protein in blood to make eggs. To find that blood, they rely on layered chemical and physical cues. These cues come into focus at different distances, starting with breath and ending with skin. CARBON DIOXIDE SIGNALING The first signal a mosquito picks up is carbon dioxide in our breath, detectable from dozens of feet away. That cue alone explains a lot of the random targeting that people notice. This can be triggered by bigger bodies, harder breathing, faster metabolism or pregnancy. Every one of these scenarios pushes more CO2 into the air around a person, and thus, makes them easier for a hungry insect to find. Pregnant women in their second trimester get bitten more, due to higher body temperature, more exhaled air, and more skin chemicals. CHEMISTRY UP CLOSE Once a mosquito gets within about 30 feet of a human, it starts reading body odor. Human skin gives off somewhere between 300 and 1,000 different airborne chemical compounds, and only a handful are tracked by mosquitoes. Among these, carboxylic acids top the list. Rockefeller researchers showed in a 2022 paper that people with high carboxylic acid levels on their skin were lopsidedly more attractive. The most attractive subjects were roughly a hundred times more appealing to mosquitoes than the least attractive. Sweat carries lactic acid, and bacteria chews on the oils that your skin produces. This comes off as being a personal signature, and it stays rem... [Truncated]",

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Almost two miles beneath the waves of the Indian Ocean, a hydrothermal vent spews sulfur into the inky black waters. On its lip, a small snail is not only basking in the poison but converting it into a shell that is part iron. This gastropod is the scaly-foot snail (Chrysomallon squamiferum), perhaps the world’s most metal animal. Despite being so hardcore, the species has a precarious future. In 2019 the snail became the first species that lives on hydrothermal vents to be classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species—thanks to the threat of deep-sea mining companies that have been interested in harvesting the minerals at the vents that the snails call home. For a long time, scientists presumed that the intense pressure and toxic compounds that erupt from Earth’s crust through hydrothermal vents would make these structures and the water around them incompatible with life. But in 2001 researchers found the snails living happily among a myriad of other creatures that thrive in these unforgiving environments. The snails’ iron-rich shell is a vital part of their survival strategy—but not as a protective armor, says Chong Chen, a senior scientist at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and a leading expert on the scaly-foot snail, who led the effort to map its genome. Rather, the shell is almost like the human liver in that it helps remove toxins from the snails’ body, he explains. Written By: Joseph Shavit/Edited By: Joshua ShavitUpdated May 16, 2026 12:48 PM PDT Human brains may have shrunk about 3,000 years ago as collective intelligence grew, researchers suggest. (CREDIT: Wikimedia / CC BY-SA 4.0) Share this story For most of human evolution, the story of the brain seemed to move in one direction. It got bigger. That long rise is still there in the fossil record. But a new analysis argues that the trend did not simply level off after the Pleistocene. Instead, human brains appear to have shrunk sharply much later than many anthropologists had thought. In fact, the change began only about 3,000 years ago. That timing is the part likely to raise eyebrows. In a study published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, researchers analyzed 985 fossil and modern human skulls. They identified three major turning points in brain evolution. Two mark well-known periods of expansion deep in the Pleistocene. However, the third points the other way, toward a recent decline in cranial capacity during the Holocene. “A surprising fact about humans today is that our brains are smaller compared to the brains of our Pleistocene ancestors. Why our brains have reduced in size has been a big mystery for anthropologists,” said co-author Dr. Jeremy DeSilva of Dartmouth College. Human evolution reflected in evolving skulls. (CREDIT: Shutterstock) The team did not stop at dating the shift. It also offered an unusual comparison to explain it, looking not to primates or domesticated animals, but to ants. A LATE CHANGE IN A FAMILIAR STORY The broad outline of human brain evolution is well established. Over millions of years, hominin brains grew dramatically. They eventually became unusually large for our body size. In this new analysis, the first major increase appeared about 2.1 million years ago. A second followed around 1.5 million years ago. Those dates line up with major changes in early Homo, including better diets, improved nutrition, technical advances, and larger social groups. Then comes the surprise. The researchers found a third change point at roughly 0.003 million years ago, or about... [Truncated]",

The Request for Proposal for the Mars Telecommunications Network, posted this week to the federal contracting portal, gives prospective contractors barely a month to respond on a program estimated to be worth roughly $700 million. As reported by Washington Technology, the agency is seeking a commercial partner because the current satellites orbiting Mars are aging and well past their design lives. Major aerospace primes typically want months to assemble a credible proposal for a program of this scope. The short turnaround is the tell: NASA is racing against time before its existing relay orbiters at Mars go dark. WHY NASA IS PANICKING NASA’s existing Mars relay capacity rests largely on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and MAVEN. Both are well past their design lives. ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter handles some traffic. None of these were built to carry the data volumes that a sample-return campaign, a crewed transit vehicle, or a surface habitat would generate. The Moon to Mars architecture assumes that by the early 2030s, NASA will be sending hardware to Mars on a regular cadence. Without a modern relay layer in place, that hardware is effectively shouting into a tin can. A single missed orbit insertion or transmitter failure on an aging spacecraft can isolate a billion-dollar surface mission. Communications relay is the connective tissue that lets robotic and crewed missions do their job, and right now that tissue is fraying. That is the context for the 30-day window. It is not a normal procurement cadence. It is a signal that the agency wants s... [Truncated]",

Bill Cassidy (R-La.) speaks to media on the first day of early voting on May 2, 2026, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. | Tyler Kaufman/Getty Images By Liz Crampton05/16/2026 10:50 PM EDTUpdated: 05/16/2026 11:16 PM EDT Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) just lost his seat — a key victory for President Donald Trump’s revenge tour this cycle. Rep. Julia Letlow, the Trump-backed candidate, and state Treasurer John Fleming advanced to a runoff in the Louisiana GOP Senate primary on Saturday, with Cassidy finishing in third place. It’s a remarkable result: Cassidy is the first previously elected senator of either party to lose in a primary since 2012. The two-term senator and chair of the powerful Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee failed to even make the runoff, finishing with roughly a quarter of the vote. Both Letlow and Fleming benefited from MAGA voters’ frustrations with Cassidy for his 2021 vote to convict Trump on impeachment charges related to the Jan. 6 insurrection, and for his skepticism of Trump’s decision to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services secretary. The president, who has been itching to oust Cassidy, finally got his wish Saturday. The result follows Trump’s successful attempts to oust several GOP state senators in Indiana last month over redistricting c... [Truncated]",

Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3–7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.

For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles — output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
  - **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
  - If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):
    ![thumbnail](og_image)

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // ← CHANGED TO ##

Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
