## Geopolitics and the Dragon

In Beijing’s halls where pageantry meets steel, Trump faced Xi’s gaze across the ancient divide; No breakthroughs forged on Iran’s wounded field, Yet trade and Taiwan in the balance reside. Approval sags at home while Hormuz stays sealed, The superpower dance both wary and wide. From Temple of Heaven to Air Force One’s flight, America’s decline—once whispered—is now in plain sight.

## AI Surveillance Backlash at Meta

Keystrokes logged and mouse trails coldly traced, An engineer’s viral post ignites the fire; “Selfishly I crave my privacy’s embrace, Yet broader still, this data-vampire empire.” Petitions spread through offices and UK space, “Employee Data Extraction Factory” the choir. What norms we forge when humans train their heirs— The machine learns our every click, our every cares.

## The Court-Packing Peril and Democratic Concessions

When victors threaten to swell the marble bench, The rule of law dissolves in partisan flame; Obergefell once bound us, now the wrench Of packing courts would rewrite every name. Redistricting wars end in quiet clench— Virginia yields, old maps will stake their claim. Democrats concede what power cannot bend, Yet rage proposes ends to electoral amend.

## Mirror Life, Space Reflections, and Attenborough at 100

From python sacks in Attenborough’s youthful quest To mirror bacteria that could doom us all, The elder statesman turned one hundred, yet confessed Our fragile Earth outshines the heavens’ call. Astronauts return with Overview Effect blessed— A tender gaze on this blue, beleaguered ball. Synthetic life or cosmic wanderlust’s allure: Both whisper caution—preserve what we endure.

## Local AI on CPU and Coding Wisdom

No GPU required, yet tokens swiftly flow, Quantized models dance on silicon alone; A Claude.md file with Karpathy’s wisdom glows— Four simple rules that every agent ought to own. From Linux tests where older chips still show Surprising speed, to prompts that write themselves, we’ve grown. The future isn’t always flashy hardware’s boast— Sometimes it’s ancient steel and rules we value most.

Trump had been met with great pageantry as he arrived for his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but the warmth of the welcome was offset by obvious tensions — over the war in Iran, the fate of Taiwan and the terms of trade between the two economic superpowers. The president was also treading something of a fine line, visibly enjoying such a high-profile foreign visit while his approval ratings sag at home, in part because of the Iran conflict. Sign up for the latest from The Hill here The visit to China had previously been scheduled for six weeks prior but had been postponed owing to the war launched against Iran by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28. Here are the big takeaways from Trump’s visit. NO BIG BREAKTHROUGH ON IRAN — OR ANYTHING ELSE There was little tangible progress on the central issue of the war. The imperative from Washington’s side is to get Beijing to lean more heavily on Iran, both to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz and to take a more conciliatory approach in the nego... [Truncated]",

It’s a piece of mandatory software that Meta began installing on the laptops of US employees last month. The tool records employees’ screens when using certain apps with the goal of collecting “real examples of how people actually use” computers, including “mouse movements, clicking buttons, and navigating dropdown menus,” according to Reuters. Meta has yet to say whether the initial data is paying off. “I'm mixed on Al. On one hand, I really enjoy using it to write software. On the other hand, I'm really nervous about its impact on the world,” the engineer wrote in an internal forum for coders. “And what kind of norms are we establishing about how the technology is used, and how people are going to be treated?” The petition, also seen by WIRED, states that “it should not be the norm that companies of any size are permitted to exploit their employees by nonconsensually extracting their data for the purposes of Al training.” Got a Tip?Are you a current or former Meta employee who wants to talk about what's happening? Reuters reports that workers have begun circulating flyers at multiple US offices to protest the company's installation of tracking software on their work computers. \"Don't want to work at the Employee Data Extraction Factory?\" the flyers ask. They've reportedly been found in meeting rooms, on vending machines, and even in the most sacred of spaces: atop toilet paper dispensers. The pamphlets encourage employees to sign an online petition protesting Meta's employee surveillance program. The flyers and petition cite the US National Labor Relations Act. \"Workers are legally protected when they choose to organize for the improvement of working conditions,\" the petition reads. A similar movement is underway in the UK, where workers began organizing a unionization campaign with United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW). It all stems from an announcement last month that Meta would install software on employees' computers to track their mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes. The initiative, dubbed the Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA), is designed to train AI agents to perform complex computing tasks. \"This is where all Meta employees can help our models get better simply by doing their daily work,\" a company memo announcing the program read. \"If we're building agents to h... I TESTED 8 MODELS ON LINUX Want to run AI models locally without expensive hardware? I tested 8 LLMs on a CPU-only machine to find out what works and what doesn’t. Bhuwan Mishra 15 May 2026 10 min read On this page For the longest time, I assumed running LLMs locally needed a decent GPU. That’s what most guides implied, and honestly, that’s how the ecosystem felt not too long ago. But after digging into recent tools and actually trying things out on CPU-only setups, that assumption doesn’t really hold anymore. Newer model formats like GGUF and aggressive quantization (think 4-bit variants) have made these models much smaller and lighter. At the same time, runtimes such as Llama.cpp have become efficient enough that CPUs (yes, even older ones) can run them without completely falling apart. That said, I quickly realized something more important: just because a model runs doesn’t mean it’s usable. While testing, I found that the real metric that matters isn’t model size or even RAM usage, it’s actually tokens per second. A model providing a response at 3–5 tokens per second technically works, but it feels painfully slow in practice. On the other hand, once you get into the 15–30 tok/s range, things start to feel responsive enough for everyday use. So instead of just listing models that can run on CPU, I focused on ones that are actually usable on low-end machines. This list is based on my own experimentation. If you're working with an older laptop, Raspberry Pi, or basic desktop, this guide would be helpful for running your local AI model successfully and speedily. WHAT “RUNS WELL ON CPU” ACTUALLY MEANS CPU performance varies wildly depending on model size and quantization. Formats used by tools like llama.cpp let you run models in reduced precision. Q8 offers better quality but is slower than Q4_K, which is much faster but comes with slightly reduced quality. I found models ranging from ~40+ ... [Truncated]",

Credit: Hulton Archive / Getty BBC Wildlife Magazine Published: May 13, 2026 at 2:04 pm If you want to get an idea of how much the making of natural history documentaries has progressed since the 1950s, take a look on the BBC website at a couple of clips from Zoo Quest, the first series on which David Attenborough worked as a presenter. One, especially, stands out. In it, a young Attenborough (it was 1956, so he would have been 30) is tasked with catching a 3.5m Burmese python, because – bizarre as it may seem today – the object of Zoo Quest was to take animals alive and bring them back to Britain. Well, the clue is in the name. 21 amazing, jaw-dropping, David Attenborough documentaries to watch and stream right now: Unmissable wildlife television at your fingertips Just who is Sir David Attenborough? Where did he come from, how did he start in television and how on Earth did he get so famous? “It looked enormous,” Attenborough tells the viewer, “and from its size and markings, I was quite sure it was a python and therefore non-poisonous, which was something of a relief.” \"That’s the length of a double decker bus!\" 33ft monster tops biggest snakes in the world list With no obvious reluctance (he must have been positive it was a python), he climbs a short distance up the tree where it can be seen and hacks down a branch. By Kiran Athar · Editorial process Published May 14, 2026 In October 1980, on Ireland’s Late Late Show, Gay Byrne asked David Attenborough what he made of the search for life beyond Earth. Attenborough was 54 then, well into what would become a seven-decade broadcasting career, and the answer he gave is now in the RTÉ archives. He said the only place a human being was likely to travel within thirty or forty years was, in his words, “not nearly as interesting as this very precious earth of ours.” He has not changed his position in the forty-six years since. The line he is most often paired with — that he wishes the world were twice as big and half of it still unexplored — is essentially the same argument restated. His 2020 documentary A Life on Our Planet rests on a single thesis: that “we moved from being a part of nature to being apart from nature.” Attenborough turned 100 on May 8, and the tribute coverage, from Nature to the Royal Albert Hall gala, has been substantial. What has gone less remarked is that the position he has held for almost half a century — that the most interesting planet in the solar system is the one we are already standing on — is now also, with very few caveats, the conclusion most astronauts come home with. The phenomenon has a name. In 1987, the space writer Frank White published a book called The Overview Effect, drawn from interviews with astronauts and cosmonauts about what happened to them on returning from space. White noticed that the most frequently reported experience was not exhilaration about the universe but a piercing tenderness toward Earth — an experience the astronauts themselves had no settled language for. By the fourth edition in 2021, the book contained forty-four original astronaut interviews. The pattern White found held: the further people travelled from Earth, the more carefully they wanted to look bac... [Truncated]",

Its voice, spanning bright, articulate high notes to deep resonant bass, captivates musicians and audiences alike. Yet the cost of marimbas—often ranging from a thousand to over twenty-five thousand dollars—poses a formidable barrier, particularly for educational institutions and aspiring musicians with limited resources. At the heart of this expense lies Honduran rosewood, the traditional material used for the instrument’s bars, prized not only for its unique acoustic qualities but also for its rarity and high market value. Amartya Bhattacharya, a passionate student of Northeastern University deeply enamored with the marimba’s expressive potential, embarked on a mission to democratize access to this instrument. His focus centered on whether more affordable but equally effective alternative materials could replicate the sonic beauty and playability of the traditional rosewood bars. The challenge was twofold: to identify candidate materials that mimic the mechanical and acoustic properties of rosewood while also ensuring durability to withstand frequent use. Bhattacharya approached this problem with a rigorous scientific lens, evaluating both natural woods and synthetic polymers as potential substitutes. Key parameters under scrutiny included density, which influences the instrument’s durability and the weight players feel; the loss factor, linked to how quickly a material’s vibrations dissipate, affecting resonance and sustain; and Young’s modulus, a measure of material stiffnes... The pomp of the address was a splendid backdrop to a full-blown political crisis in the U.K. Y esterday, Britain presented what is becoming its latest unique contribution to the history of constitutional development — namely, the pageantry of unsolved crises. It was the occasion, known long in advance, when the sovereign delivers what is known as the Gracious Speech outlining his government’s legislative program in the House of Lords to an assembly that includes his ministers, opposition leaders, peers, and MPs of all parties with the most important VIPs, namely the prime minster and ministers, unseated in the humble petitioning position of standing throughout at the bar (i.e., edge) of the House. Everybody listened with suitable humility as King Charles III listed all the plans his government intended to implement in the next twelve months. Opposition MPs often complain that his formal recital of controversial policies may create the impression that the king personally approves of all that “my government” will do. That is almost always a needless anxiety. It was especially so on Wednesday because the Gracious Speech contained a great deal more rhetoric than actual solid policies — or at least did so far more than is usually the case. Almost the biggest event in it... [Truncated]",

By Joe Zadeh May 14, 2026 Credits Joe Zadeh is a contributing writer for Noema based in Newcastle. Seasoned bioethicist Laurie Zoloth has a trick she likes to play in her seminars at the University of Chicago. She tells each student to pick up a pencil, then she gives them a series of instructions about how to maneuver it in their hands. At some point, nearly everyone drops the pencil. And that’s the point she’s trying to illuminate: “Humans always make errors,” Zoloth told me over Zoom. We drop things, we forget to switch things off, we lose our focus, we get tired. “Being human is like driving in a snowstorm, all the time,” she said, the hint of a smile emanating from beneath her round glasses. I was interviewing Zoloth about events that had taken place a year earlier, in late 2024, when she virtually attended the monthly meeting of the Engineering Biology Research Consortium security committee, where synthetic biology professionals from academia, industry and government meet and discuss security implications in the field. John Glass was also on the call. Glass is one of the most prominent biologists in the U.S. and the leader of the Synthetic Biology Group at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). “I’d never seen him really worried about stuff before — he’s always smiling,” Zoloth told me. On this particular day, however, no smiles. Nobody was allowed to share publicly what Glass was about to tell them. It was embargoed for another few weeks. And then he began to explain what, for some time, had mostly been discussed privately in small meetings between increasingly concerned scientists. “I was horrified,” said Zoloth. A few weeks later, on Dec. 12, 2024, what Glass had spoken about that day became public knowledge. A group of 38 prominent scientists from around the world — including 16 members of national academies and two Nobel Laureates — called for a halt on the creation of of a novel synthetic bacteria that, if realized and accidentally leaked into the environment, could ... (Image credit: T.J. Martin) Today, I completed my term of over two decades as director of Harvard’s Institute for Theory and Computation. Below is the transcript from a speech that I gave in a gathering of about a hundred people who assembled in celebration of my leadership. The video of the speech is posted here. *** I would like to start by saying that the rumors about my death are overly exaggerated. The best is yet to come. I always say that because I’m all about the future. A few months ago, there was an artist from New York City, Greg Wyatt, the most accomplished sculptor in the United States, who put many bronze sculptures in many places. And he decided to donate two bronze sculptures of Galileo Galilei, with a third one being made now, as well as fifty-one watercolors in my office. And I told our administrator, T.J. Martin, “Get rid of all the file cabinets that I have, because they represent the past. I don’t care about the past. I don’t need all these files from the time I was department chair.” And so, we did. If you visit my office, it’s a mini museum right now. And there is actually a fourth sculpture being cast in bronze, the first one that I’m responsible for, which will hopefully arrive within a few months. But I also wanted to explain a few things about the principles, the way I manage my life. Everyone who knows me, including my wife — who is somewhere here, will tell you that I haven’t changed since I was a kid. I’m still the same Avi. I used to drive a tractor to the hills of the village where my parents had a farm, and I used to read philosophy books. That’s what excited me, the big picture. I didn’t care about the details or societal intrigues. I don’t need likes on social media. It’s really irrelevant because what matters the most is when you look at our cosmic environment to figure out what it’s all about. Back then, when I was a kid, my horizon extended to about 1.3 light seconds, which is the distance to the Moon, and that was during the Apollo program. That was pretty much what everyone was talking about in terms of space, 1.3 light seconds. And ... [Truncated]",

Sign in here to read more. In an instant, the entire history of American jurisprudence would be wiped out, and, with it, the Constitution as a going concern. I n 2015, after the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, I took to the pages of this magazine to contend that Kim Davis, the elected county clerk of Rowan County, Ky., needed to stop refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples and start following federal law posthaste. In a response to my then-colleague David French — who, at the time, was somewhat sympathetic to Davis’s resistance — I adopted the steadfast position that, “until such time as the Constitution is amended, the Court’s attitude changes, or the republic falls to revolution, Obergefell will remain on an equal legal footing with the other precedents that make up our contemporary legal oeuvre,” and that, in consequence, its holding must be followed by everyone, whether they liked it or not. “The rule of law,” I concluded, “is just that: a rule. There is no such thing as a selective revolution.” I did not write this because I believed that the Obergefell decision was correct. On the contrary: I thought then, as I think now, that there exists no theory of the Supreme Court’s role within our system that could plausibly render that decision justifiable. There is nothing in the Constitution’s t... [Truncated]",

(U.S. Navy) There’s no avoiding blunt reality. Sign in here to read more. There’s no avoiding blunt reality. O n our podcast yesterday, Rich Lowry and I discussed whether it is time for President Trump to resume the intensive bombing campaign against Iran. After all, if anything, Iran is tightening, rather than easing, its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, its negotiating position is intransigent (surprise!), and if U.S. intelligence leaks to the New York Times are accurate, “Iran has restored operational access to 30 of the 33 missile sites it retains” along the strait, as well as 70 percent of both its mobile missile launchers and pre-war missile stockpile. I’ll separately address why I’m skeptical about the Times report — more the tenor of it than what American spy agencies may be blabbing about damage assessments. For now, I am going to continue pounding the dead horse I’ve been beating for nearly three months. What the Trump administration is doing is bass-ackwards, to the dismay of supporters of action against the Death to America regime and, no doubt, to the delight of Trump detractors, who can’t believe their good fortune: a president who has allowed them to highlight his erratic nature while obscuring their hand in making Iran a more formidable threat. Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3–7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.

For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles — output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
  - **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
  - If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):
    ![thumbnail](og_image)

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // ← CHANGED TO ##

Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
