THAT'S PROBABLY THE WRONG QUESTION. Noah SmithMay 09, 2026∙ Paid28515424ShareCartoon by Joseph Keppler via Wikimedia Commons A few days ago I wrote a post about why Democrats can’t build a welfare state by taxing only billionaires: California's \"billionaire tax\" is the wrong approachNoah Smith·May 2Read full story I wrote: Once upon a time, class politics pitted the middle class and poor against the upper classes; now, American politics may reflect a status conflict between millionaires and billionaires. If Democrats have become the party of the millionaires-against-billionaires, that would explain why their tax policies are focused on soaking the ultra-rich while easing the burden of the merely-rich. As if to emphasize this point, just a couple of days later, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared that “There’s a certain level of wealth that’s unearned…You can’t earn a billion dollars.” This immediately raises the question: What amount of wealth does AOC think you can “earn”? A hundred million dollars? Ten million? Presumably there’s some number of millions that she thinks can be earned. That definitely fits the “party of millionaires-against-billionaires” framing from my post. But the more important question is: Is AOC right? Can a billion dollars be “earned”? It depends on what “earned” means, of course. To most people, the word probably means something very vague — basically, “I think you deserve this amount of money.” You can come up with more specific definitions if you want. For example, if you’re a socialist, you might define only labor income as “earned” and capital income as “unearned”. If you’re a free-marketer, you might define “earned” income as your marginal product — i.e., the amount by which society would be poorer if you had never been born. And so on. But I’m not sure how useful that sort of exercise is. The socialist idea that capital income is unearned is just a moral judgement, so it leads to endless emotional debates over whether taking risk, making capital more available, etc. are things people ought to get paid for. The free-market concept is more interesting, because it’s objective, but it’s pretty unknowable — unless you’re in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, you can’t really run the natural experiment of removing someone from the timeline.1 On top of that, most people simply won’t accept such simple, restrictive definitions ... Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA / Western University, J. Cami They are known as \"buckyballs,\" ball-shaped molecules that resemble a hollow sphere, and are found in space. These strange customers were first observed by Professor Jan Cami and a team from Western University in 2010 using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). And now, more than 15 years later, Cami and his colleagues have detected buckyballs again using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The rich data they retrieved from Webb's observations have pointed to the origin of these strange cosmic molecules. The observations were part of Cycle 3 of the JWST General Observer (GO-4076) program, titled \"Fullerenes in Tc 1: a quantitative study of the interaction of large molecules with their radiative environment.\" The research was made possible with the support of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and a Western University Accelerator Award. Buckeyballs are fascinating molecules, consisting of 60 perfectly arranged carbon atoms, hence the chemical formula C60. The molecule was first synthesized in 1985 by Sir Harry Kroto and his colleagues at the University of Sussex, a feat that earned him the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Kroto named the molecule \"buckminsterfullerene\" in honor of Buckminster Fuller, the famous architect who developed geodesic domes. In addition to resembling Fuller's domes, the molecules also share the same structural principles. *Illustrations depicting how ‘buckyballs’ are arranged in patterns of hexagons and pentagons, similar to the pattern on a soccer ball or a geodesic dome. Credit: Western Communications* Kroto predicted that buckyballs would be widespread and abundant in the Universe, but evidence for their cosmic existence would not be found until 2010. Cami and his colleagues discovered buckyballs while observing Tc 1 (IC 1266), a planetary nebula surrounding a dying star located 12,400 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Ara. The state-owned outlet reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, that negotiations between the Trump administration and Tehran are solely focused on halting hostilities in the region. The administration proposed a one-page memorandum to Tehran earlier this week. The deal would establish a framework for future talks on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, a source familiar told NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer on Wednesday. The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. Multiple outlets reported this week that the administration is seeking a moratorium on Iranian nuclear enrichment in exchange for the U.S. lifting sanctions and releasing billions in frozen Iranian funds. As part of the deal, the two sides would also reportedly lift restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. (Win McNamee/Getty Images) In all the jubilation surrounding the Virginia Supreme Court’s surprise rejection of the state’s attempt to amend the state constitution and create a 10–1 Democratic congressional gerrymander in place of its currently drawn lines, some nagging thoughts lurk in the corner of my head: 1.) The holding of the Virginia Supreme Court is already being contested loudly by the usual national morons: Hakeem Jeffries declared that “the decision by the Virginia Supreme Court to overturn the will of more than three million voters will not stand” (narrator: yes it will), while the New York Times’ Jamelle Bouie demanded that Virginia voters “call their delegates and senators and demand that they ignore this illegitimate ruling.” 2.) Virginia Democrats, for the most part, have not joined this chorus. State house speaker Don Scott declared in a press release that “we respect the decision of the Supreme Court of Virginia.” Governor Abigail Spanberger lowered the rhetorical temperature as well, looking instead toward November: “I am disappointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling, but my focus as Governor will be on ensuring that all voters have the information necessary to make their voices heard this November in the midterm elections because in those elections we — the voters — will have the final say.” As for Louise Lucas, president pro tempore of the Virginia State Senate and herself the original mastermind behind the gerrymander? Well, she has other problems right no... [Truncated]",

Written By: Mac Oliveau/Edited By: Joseph ShavitPublished May 9, 2026 1:07 PM PDT New SynTrogo tool cut synapses in mouse memory circuits, yet strengthened remaining connections and improved recall. (CREDIT: Wikimedia / CC BY-SA 4.0) Share this story The brain is often described as a dense forest of connections, and for years scientists have searched for ways to trim that forest with precision. They have learned how to turn neural activity up or down. Reworking the physical wiring itself has been much harder. Now a team in South Korea says it has built a tool that can do just that. Researchers at the Institute for Basic Science and the Korea Brain Research Institute developed a system called SynTrogo, short for Synthetic Trogocytosis, that lets astrocytes, the star-shaped support cells wrapped around synapses, selectively reduce synaptic connections in a chosen brain circuit. In mice, the method cut excitatory synapse numbers in a memory-related hippocampal pathway by about 27 percent. Yet instead of weakening the circuit, the remaining connections became stronger, more plastic, and better at supporting memory. “This is the first demonstration that brain circuits can be directly edited by engineering physical interactions between neurons and astrocytes, independent of neuronal activity,” said Dr. LEE Sangkyu of the IBS Center for Memory and Glioscience. “It opens the possibility of ‘connectome editing’ and provides a new platform for studying and reshaping the physical architecture of neural circuits.” Synapses are the contact points where one neuron passes signals to another. Together they form the connectome, the brain’s wiring diagram. Those links are not fixed. Throughout life, some are strengthened, some are weakened, and some are removed in a pruning process that helps circuits stay functional. When pruning goes wrong, either becoming too aggressive or too limited, it has been linked to disorders including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease. "og_description": "\n\nOriginal Video Description:\n\nUpon ChatGPT's release in 2022, I realized that I wrote like AI. My sentences were long, my writing patterns were predictable, and my use of em-dashes was frequent. Initially, I was not concerned: if models are being trained to write like me, I must be doing a good job, right? Then, however, came the \"AI detectors\" used by teachers and reviewers. These AI detectors are machine learning tools designed to spot patterns associated with AI-generated text. They measure the predictability of a written work’s wording (\"perplexity\"), the variability of the sentence structure (\"burstiness\"), and other markers. Essentially, AIs are being used to spot content created by other AIs. At this point, I began to change my writing style. No more back-to-back 20+ word sentences. No more dash-filled phrases, semicolons, or groups of threes; I was not willing to risk being flagged. Returning to the point of the em-dash (and other snubbed marks), there are two key reasons why they—along with words like \"delve\" and \"underscores\"—are so frequent in AI-generated writing: the training data, and the assessment of said data. First, let's look at the data collection process for LLMs (large language models). Over 60% of the training data used in early models like GPT-3 came directly from web crawls, which collect publicly available text off the internet. After the data is collected, it is used to train models to predict language structures and patterns. Most LLMs are trained to predict the next few words in a sequence, internalizing patterns in grammar and style along the way. If a particular structure (like the em-dash) appears often enough and isn't adjusted later on, it can become a characteristic aspect of the model's output. As a result of this pattern-based learning—and the fact that these patterns aren't always corrected—models can take on specific stylistic habits that become hard-wired as their \"instinct\". As Medium writer Brent Csutoras demonstrated in his failed attempts to remove em-dashes from the results of ChatGPT, Claude, and other models, the em-dash has become embedded into the output style of today's LLMs. To be clear, you are not imagining this em-dash overuse. According to Freeburg, an independent researcher, LLMs use em-dashes much more frequently than human writers, with GPT-4.1 having a 3.28x higher frequency in standard essays. Similarly to Csutoras' conclusion, they found that em-dashes were almost entirely resistant to prompt manipulations and user restrictions. Now, how did no one realize that AIs were learning to use em-dashes so frequently? Some journalists, including The Economist's Alex Hern, believe that the Africa-based regulation of chatbots' content is a key factor. African English uses words like \"delve\" much more frequently than the internet at large, which may affect the regulators' choices. However, the work of these moderators mostly ties to removing sexist, racist, and other harmful content, not directly altering the linguistic choices of the models. Initially, I hypothesized that the explanation was tied to the datasets being used to train LLMs. However, after a small investigation comparing word fr\n\n[... 5591 chars truncated in debug view ...]",

New research suggests this was a gradual, multi-stage process fueled by the evolution of the brain. The study proposes that as marine environments became more competitive, the need to process sensory information drove neural complexity, which then provided the genetic “toolkit” for building more complex body plans. Key Research Findings The Brain-First Hypothesis: Rather than being a byproduct of complex bodies, the expansion and regionalization of the brain may have come first, enabling subsequent anatomical innovation.Ecological Feedback Loops: Increasing complexity in marine environments (predator-prey interactions) created pressure for organisms to sense and respond to their surroundings, favoring more sophisticated nervous systems.Genetic Co-option: The genetic “toolkits” used for brain development were eventually reused, or co-opted, to pattern other organ systems, such as advanced sensory organs and segmented structures.Specific Lineages: This evolutionary path was particularly pronounced in successful groups like arthropods, mollusks, annelids, and chordates.Environmental Context: Evolutionary success is not tied solely to complexity; many organisms thrive with simple body plans if they meet the specific demands of their environment. Source: Hebrew University of Jerusalem For decades, scientists have sought to explain the so-called “Cambrian Explosion,” a pivotal period over 500 million years ago when a remarkable diversity of animal life appeared in the fossil record. But rather than a sudden burst of innovation, new research suggests this diversification was the result of a gradual, multi-stage process, driven in large part by the evolution of the brain. The Brain-First Hypothesis suggests that the expansion of the brain provided the essential genetic toolkits that were later co-opted to develop the complex body plans and diverse lineages observed after the Cambrian Explosion. Light sails, which are huge sheets pushed along by light that bounces off of them, may be the best way to travel enormous distances through space, and now we may have a way to steer them. “We knew already that any light or laser can impart momentum transfer, but now we can control the direction as well,” says Kaushik Kudtarkar at Texas A&M University. He and his colleagues created a tiny device called a metajet that uses refraction of light, not just reflection, to move in more than one direction at once. The device is a material called a metasurface, an extremely thin sheet textured to manipulate light. In this case, the researchers flipped that on its head, using the light to manipulate the metasurface. A series of tiny pillars on the material steers the light that hits it, with the size and pattern of the pillars controlling the strength and direction of the momentum that the light imparts on the entire device as it moves through. The whole thing is about 0.01 millimetres across. To test it, the researchers dropped the silicon device in water and shone a laser on it, watching it with a microscope to track its motion. They found that the metajet both levitated and moved horizontally, reaching a maximum speed of about 0.07 millimetres per second. The metajet moving forwards, captured every 10 seconds Kaushik Kudtarkar et al. 2026 “Now that we know about the forces on this device, you can change the metasurface design and then you can steer it in any way you want,” says Kudtarkar. There are metasurfaces that change their shapes ... [Truncated]",

The study suggests this movement style evolved only once but became a defining feature of true crabs. Credit: Shutterstock Crabs may owe their famous sideways walk to one evolutionary event that happened 200 million years ago. Researchers have uncovered new evidence about how crabs evolved their famous sideways movement, suggesting the unusual walking style first appeared about 200 million years ago. The findings, published as a Reviewed Preprint in eLife, are based on the largest comparative analysis yet of crab locomotion. By combining direct observations of living crabs with evolutionary data, the team traced sideways walking back to a shared ancestor from the Jurassic period. Editors at eLife say the study provides valuable insights supported by largely convincing evidence and could interest scientists studying how animals move. Researchers say this style of movement may help crabs evade predators because it allows them to escape in less predictable directions. “Sideways locomotion may have contributed significantly to the ecological success of true crabs,” says senior corresponding author Yuuki Kawabata, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology, Nagasaki University, Japan. “There are around 7,904 species of true crabs, far exceeding that of their sister group, Anomura, or their closest relatives, Astacidea; they have colonized diverse habitats around the world, including terrestrial, freshwater, and deep-sea environments; and their crab-like body shape has evolved repeatedly over t... The U.K.’s foolish approach to wage discrimination has left a host of economic problems in its wake. O ver the past 50 years, most countries in the West have passed laws banning employers from wage-discriminating on the basis of sex. The United Kingdom, however, has gone one step further: Its Equality Act targets not just outright discrimination but also differences in pay stemming from men and women choosing different roles. Under the act, work of “equal value” must be paid the same — and it’s not the market that determines value. And put simply, this policy has done unquestionable damage to British communities and to the economy. In Birmingham, for example, female public-sector employees working as anything from carers to lunch ladies have used the law to demand that they be paid the same as male garbagemen, arguing that their work was of equal value to the general public. The city (correctly) argued that higher pay was needed to attract staff for dangerous, physically demanding work like sanitation. The courts, however, disagreed. In response to the ruling, the city attempted to restructure public services and remove some of the higher-paying, male-dominated roles, which of course caused an uproar. In the fall of 2023, Birmingham was forced into bankruptcy. The garbagemen have now been on strike for ov... [Truncated]",

Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3–7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.
For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles — output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
- **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
- If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // ← CHANGED TO ##
Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
