## Sonic Currents and Cultural Echoes
In streams of sound where ancient meets the new, The tenor’s dictum calls through Baroque air, While modern beats and lyric fire pursue The restless heart that seeks both truth and dare. From Poplutz’ sacred line to Rodrigo’s cry, From cosmic sparks to value’s chase in night, These melodies entwine the low and high— A soundtrack for our fractured, flickering light. Yet even as the music soothes or stings, It mirrors deeper wars that rage outside: The billion-dollar dream, the ballot’s swings, The AI sirens promising to guide. In harmony and discord both we find The age’s spirit—restless, unconfined.

## Political Tectonics: Power, Maps, and Money
When maps are redrawn and old orders shake, The billionaires and socialists collide; One cries to tax the rich for justice’ sake, The other builds new walls where fortunes hide. In Virginia courts the judges overturn The Democrats’ ambitious power play, While Trump speaks on and Hamill’s dark post burns— The culture war devours another day. From Mamdani’s crusade to Tim Pool’s roar, The center cannot hold, the fringes swell; Each side insists its vision will restore A nation teetering on fortune’s knell. Yet in the strife a deeper truth appears: No neutral state survives these angry years.

## Science on the Edge: Cosmos, Climate, and Quantum Revolt
Where crystal symmetry once drew the line, New quantum phases let forbidden tones entwine; On lunar far side Artemis eyes behold The impact flashes cameras still withhold. Brightened clouds may yet forestall the heat, While ancient galaxies refuse to spin or beat— In every realm, from atoms’ hidden dance To planetary breath, old certainties advance No more. The universe rewrites its code, And we, astonished, watch the new road unfold.

Compute flows freely now from Starship’s might, While workshops teach us how to birth the light Of language models written line by line. Yet in the code new questions intertwine: Can engineered emergence truly feel, Or does the scent of truth forever steal Away from hands that only calculate? The future hums—part promise, part debate.

It describes the rules that make an object look unchanged after a rotation, reflection, or other transformations. In materials, symmetry governs how atoms and electrons are arranged, and how they move together. Crucially, symmetry can even prevent certain collective atomic motions (vibrations) from interacting at all: some are simply forbidden to talk to each other. But what if those symmetry restrictions are not as rigid as they seem? SYMMETRY RULES LOOSENED BY ELECTRONS A new study in Nature Physics shows that these constraints can be partially lifted. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) in Hamburg found that electronic fluctuations can dynamically bridge vibrations that symmetry would normally keep separate. Led by Edoardo Baldini's group at UT Austin, the study reveals how light, vibrations, and electrons become intertwined in a special type of crystal known as ferroaxial, opening new opportunities for controlling quantum states with light. The researchers focused on a layered material that at room temperature develops an exotic quantum state. Ions and electrons rearrange together into a static, wave-like pattern known as a charge-density wave (CDW), which manifests as a tiling of star-of-David clusters. These stars can orient in two... Add Axios on Google Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios The Virginia Supreme Court overturned the results of the state's redistricting referendum, which voters narrowly approved last month. Why it matters: The 4-3 ruling upends one of the most closely watched redistricting fights in the country. It follows months of legal challenges over whether the referendum was unconstitutional. The big picture: The Friday decision says the amendment process pushed by Democrats violated the state constitution, effectively blocking the effort to redraw congressional maps mid-decade. That's after the state spent $5.2 million to pay for the special election, and outside groups raised nearly $100 million to sway voters. The new map would have been in effect for the November midterms and was expected to shift the state's congressional split from 6-5 favoring Democrats to 10-1. Between the lines: It was a move Democrats said would've countered Republican-led states that redrew districts to add GOP seats in a closely divided U.S. House. Republicans, who have repeatedly sued to block the redistricting vote, have called it extreme, illegal and hyperpartisan. Zoom in: A central part of the case during oral arguments concerned what qualifies as the \"next general election\" under Virginia's constitution. Virginia law requires amendments to move through two General Assembly sessions: one before the House has an election (last November) and one after.Republicans have argued that lawmakers had improperly advanced the amendment after early voting for the 2025 House elections had already begu... Cleaner air means that clouds reflect less incoming solar radiation and the global temperature is likely to rise. A new study has found that marine cloud brightening could mitigate this. By modeling the effects of spraying sea salt into four cloudy Pacific Ocean zones, scientists have suggested that global average temperatures could be kept near 2020 levels, as air pollution levels decline. The result turns cleaner air into a harder climate bargain, because the same cloud fix could still leave the United States hotter and drier. CLOUDS ENTER THE TEST Inside a computer model built to mimic climate from 2020 to 2100, four cloudy Pacific Ocean zones became the testing ground for that bargain. By probing that simulated ocean, Yang Yu, a climate researcher at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), showed how falling pollution could expose hidden warming. Yu’s team kept the finding tightly focused on the idea that using cleaner energy will remove dirty particles from the atmosphere, the same particles that have been shading Earth. The model showed that marine cloud brightening may be a possible way to ensure global cooling, but regional costs kept the answer from being simple. WHY POLLUTION COOLED Air pollution harms people, yet some smoke and haze also bounces sunlight away before it can heat Earth’s surface. Scientists call these tiny airborne bits aerosols – small, suspended particles that can scatter sunlight or help clouds form. As countries chase carbon neutrality – balancing released, heat-trapping gases with removals or offsets – many of those particles fade too. Earlier work found that aerosol cuts could dominate near-term warming on that pathway, making the cleanup paradox hard to ignore. SALT SPRAY LEADS TO CLOUD BRIGHTENING Marine cloud brightening tries to replace part of that lost shade without adding soot or smog back to the air. Sprayed sea salt aerosols – microscopic salt particles from seawater – give water vapor more places to gather into droplets. Smaller droplets make clouds look whiter from above, so more incoming sunlight returns to space before warming the ocean. Cool... [Truncated]",

Add Axios on Google Illustration: Allie Carl/Axios Anthropic said Wednesday it has struck a deal to gain access to compute capacity from Elon Musk's SpaceX, a move that could help the company deal with surging demand. Why it matters: Anthropic has been struggling to meet the needs of developers which has led to aggressive rate caps and a shift to usage-based pricing. Driving the news: In addition to the partnership with SpaceX, Anthropic said it will lift the five-hour rate caps for most paid subscribers including those on its Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. \"We're partnering with SpaceX to use all the capacity of their Colossus One data center,\" Anthropic head of product Ami Vora said, speaking at the company's developer conference in San Francisco. In a statement, Anthropic said the deal gives it \"access to more than 300 megawatts of new capacity (over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs) within the month.\" Anthropic also announced changes that could address recent complaints about usage limits, including: Removing peak hours limits reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max users.Raising API rate limits for Opus models. Zoom out: The move comes as SpaceX is working to become an AI powerhouse before an expected IPO this fall, which is slated to be the largest in corporate history. SpaceX acquired xAI in January and has a deal with Cursor that it says gives it the option to buy the coding startup for $60 billion. What they're saying: Anthropic says a recent deal with Amazon will also help it expand geographically, which is key for customers in regulated industries who often need to store data within a specific country or region. It said its partnership with Amazon will include additional inference capacity in both Europe and Asia. And the deal with SpaceX also has the two companies exploring the potential for data centers in space. \"As part of this agreement, Anthropic also expressed interest in partnering to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI... The bizarre and messy court battle between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former OpenAI investor Elon Musk trudges on. And this week, as revealed in court, OpenAI’s former Chief Technology Office had some extremely interesting — and at points, alarming — things to say about her time working under Altman. Appearing in a video deposition on Wednesday, former OpenAI CTO and current Thinking Machines Lab CEO Mira Murati, while under threat of perjury, had much to say about Altman’s long-alleged perfidy — a rumored trait so widely discussed that it was the subject of a remarkable investigation by The New Yorker just last month. Perhaps most strikingly, Murati reportedly told lawyers during her deposition that Altman once incorrectly told her that OpenAI’s legal team had cleared a new AI model to bypass an internal safety board tasked with reviewing new models before release. Asked whether she believed Altman “was telling the truth when he made that statement” to Murati, the former CTO hit back with a simple: “no.” In other words: under oath, the former CTO — and briefly interim CEO — of the company behi... Credit: Neuroscience News THE NEURAL SHORTCUT TO LANGUAGE FeaturedNeuroscience·May 7, 2026 Summary: Speech is often viewed as a massive leap in brain complexity, but new research suggests that evolving complex vocalizations might be much simpler than we thought. By comparing the brains of ordinary lab mice with Alston’s singing mice, a Central American species famous for its rapid-fire vocal duets, researchers discovered that the difference isn’t a bigger brain or new regions. Instead, evolution simply tripled the number of neurons connecting the mouth-movement center to just two key areas. This “minimalist” neural adaptation may mirror the same evolutionary trick that eventually gave humans the gift of language. Key Facts The “Conversation” Parallel: Alston’s singing mice (Scotinomys teguina) perform elaborate, audible songs and take turns in rapid duets, mimicking the split-second timing of human conversation.Indistinguishable Brains: To the naked eye (and even standard brain slices), singing mouse brains look exactly like lab mouse brains. There are no new regions or gross anatomical changes.Molecular Barcoding (MAPseq): Using a high-resolution tracing technique, researchers mapped individual neurons and found that evolution targeted one specific hub: the orofacial motor cortex (OMC).The Triple-Wire Connection: The singing mouse evolved three times as many neural projections connecting the OMC to two regions:The auditory cortical region (for hearing and turn-taking).The midbrain periaqueductal gray (a universal vocal control structure). The “Playbook” for Evolution: This suggests that complex behaviors don’t require total reorganization; they can emerge from targeted refinements of existing wiring. Source: CSHL Speech is a crowning achievement of human evolution, the skill that separates us from every other animal. So, it would stand to reason that evolving this capability required some enormous leap in brain complexity. A study published today in Nature suggests otherwise. Alston’s singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina), a small rodent from the cloud forests of Central America, produces loud, elaborate songs humans can hear across a room. These mice can sing solo but often perform ra... [Truncated]",

A massive galaxy, formed less than 2 billion years after the Big Bang, appears to have no rotation at all, a trait usually seen only in much older, evolved galaxies. This challenges current theories that young galaxies should still be spinning from their formation. Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email FULL STORY A giant ancient galaxy that mysteriously doesn’t spin is rewriting what we thought we knew about how galaxies form. Credit: AI/ScienceDaily.com Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have uncovered an unexpected feature in a distant, early galaxy. Despite forming when the universe was still very young, this galaxy shows no signs of rotation. That behavior is typically seen only in very large, mature galaxies much closer to Earth, explained Ben Forrest, a research scientist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Davis, and lead author of a study published May 4 in Nature Astronomy. \"This one in particular did not show any evidence of rotation, which was surprising and very interesting,\" Forrest said. Why Galaxies Are Expected to Spin Current models suggest that galaxies begin spinning as they form. Gas flowing inward and the pull of gravity create angular momentum, setting these systems in motion. Over billions of years, galaxies can collide and merge, especially in dense clusters. These repeated interactions can either build up or cancel out rotation. As a result, some nearby galaxies show little overall spin and instead display stars moving in random directions. Because this transformation is thought to take a very long time, it is surprising to see it in galaxy XMM-VID1-2075 when the universe was less than 2 billion years old. A Massive Galaxy That Formed Early Forrest and his colleagues, part of the MAGAZ3NE (Massive Ancient Galaxies at z>3 NEar-Infrared) survey, had already studied this galaxy using the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaiʻi. \"Previous MAGAZ3NE ... [Truncated]",

But in our quest to advance artificial intelligence, nobody seems to care about it. Jim Linear for Noema Magazine FeatureTechnology & the Human By Philip Maughan April 16, 2026 Credits Philip Maughan is a writer and researcher based in London. Over the last few years, breakthroughs in AI have been almost too numerous to track. Chatbots can now pass the same exams required of doctors and lawyers. A cancer drug designed by AI has entered clinical trials. AI agents are serving as autonomous personal assistants. There have even been reports that AI can smell. “Computers Are Learning to Smell,” declared The Atlantic. “AI is digitizing our sense of smell,” according to the World Economic Forum. “AI tastebuds are better at identifying what’s in food than you,” claimed TechRadar, while a spellbound BBC Future reported that “An AI started ‘tasting’ colours and shapes.” The truth, however, is that these headlines grossly embellish AI’s abilities. If you read the BBC Future article closely, for example, you’ll learn that a large language model (LLM) repeated the associations humans make between tastes, colors and shapes — sweet things are pink and round; sour things are yellow — observations that were captured in its training data. The reality is that very little progress has been made toward giving AI a sense of smell because pretty much nobody working in AI cares. Between 2015 and 2025, the number of research papers on artificial olfaction remained stagnant, while papers on machine vision, language processing and computer audio rose by orders of magnitude. Big AI conferences like NeurIPS, ICLR and ICML have shown little interest in integrating olfaction into the next generation of models. Most leaders in the field appear convinced that achieving human-level AI is a question of improving skills like abstract reasoning, planning, language use and problem-solving — things that typically do not depend on sensory capabilities like smell. Even in the design of humanoid and canine robots, as well as other embodied AI systems, it’s rarely considered. But olfaction is not an optional add-on for developing human-l... [Truncated]",

Eiko Ojala for Noema Magazine InterviewFuture of Democracy April 14, 2026 Credits Michael Sandel, an author and a professor of political philosophy at Harvard University, is the 2025 laureate of the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy & Culture. He recently sat down with Noema Editor-in-Chief Nathan Gardels to discuss the fate of liberalism and the vulnerability of the neutral state. Nathan Gardels: It is remarkable in today’s context to remember that 40 years ago, you and I sat here in Cambridge at the dining room table of the famous sociologist Daniel Bell to discuss what we called “the American Cultural Civil War.” The discussion was about the loss of authority of the liberal establishment with the rise of Ronald Reagan, both politically and culturally. Much of what was said then can be said now. You said then that Reagan appealed to the “symbols and resonances” of traditional order and that Democrats had become the party of the national welfare state that had lost touch with the “local intermediating institutions” like bowling leagues and churches, which they “looked down on as parochial and prejudiced.” Then you presciently pointed out the “vulnerability of a neutral state as a framework of rights equally impartial among competing conceptions of the good life.” It was vulnerable, you said, because “the problem of tolerance is that it is not self-interpreting or self-implementing as an ideal. Tolerance is not a substitute for a vision of the common good. It presupposes one.” The way to address this vulnerability, you said at the time, is to “infuse politics with moral and spiritual meaning.” So, one has to ask, in 2026, isn’t that just what MAGA has done? They’ve assigned a moral substance to the state, not in terms of liberal values, but in terms of what they call the “strong gods” of family, faith and nation. Michael Sandel: Yes. MAGA has been very effective at speaking to the sense that the moral fabric of community was unraveling around us, invoking a kind of hyper-nationalism that asserts sovereignty and belonging with a vengeance. Part ... [Truncated]",

Anthony Gerace for Noema Magazine. (Paleolithic cave painting source image by VCG Wilson/Corbis via Getty Images.) InterviewPhilosophy & Culture April 21, 2026 Credits Stuart Kauffman is a theoretical biologist and leading complexity scientist. He is the author of “The Origins of Order: Self-Organization and Natural Selection in Evolution” (1993). Stuart Kauffman is a theoretical biologist and leading complexity scientist who has argued that the self-organization of organisms is as influential in evolution as natural selection. His seminal book on the subject is “The Origins of Order: Self-Organization and Natural Selection in Evolution” (1993). He spoke recently with Noema Editor-in-Chief Nathan Gardels. Nathan Gardels: Along with the Nobel Laureate Ilya Prigogine, you are considered the pioneering scientist of complexity theory. What ties you two together is the discovery that the biosphere, our living world, is inherently “creative.” Both the thermodynamic properties of physics and the evolutionary properties of biology reveal that all systems in a state of disorder “far from equilibrium” (in terms of energy input and output) self-organize, not only to survive within the constraints of their environment, but to propagate as something altogether new. You even trace the origins of living order — “the elan vital” — to what you call an “autocatalytic” process of the spontaneous interaction of molecules. As it evolves, this process is not deterministic but emerges in unforeseen or unprestatable ways. You call these states the “adjacent possible,” or innovative states waiting in the wings to be realized as conditions permit. In short, the future is open and not pre-determined. The culmination of your thinking now goes beyond these ideas to what you call the “Third Transition in Science” in your forthcoming book, “Origins: Cosmos, Life, Mind,” that does not follow the laws of either the Newtonian or Quantum paradigms with which we have become familiar. Can you first explain in lay terms “autocatalysis” and the “adjacent possible” work, and how you arrived at your new insight based on those understa... [Truncated]",

Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3–7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.
For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles — output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
- **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
- If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // ← CHANGED TO ##
Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
