One side effect of drawing districts for racial reasons is that it institutionalizes race-conscious politics while isolating racial groups from effective political competition. This yields politicians who get elected by racial appeals and stay in office through scandal and senility unto death. Whatever sense this all might have made for black voters half a century ago, those voters are today so integrated into the mainstream of the Democratic Party — and, at the margins, more open to Republicans as well — that they ought to be treated the same as every other American. Certainly, black voters are nowhere ignored in statewide or national elections. Breaking down the race-specific walls around legislative districts is apt, in the long run, to produce a healthier politics. That day is now here. Most of the organic raw materials are traced to the Mesozoic era, 66 to 252 million years ago, but some deposits are much older, originating from algae and bacteria in ancient seas. Life started on Earth about 4.2 billion years ago in the form of the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA), which was DNA-dated recently here. However, most rocks of that age have been heated so many times that any fossils they may have contained are gone. In 1998, a team led by geologist Birger Rasmussen of the University of Western Australia discovered microscopic drops of fluid oil preserved within mineral grains in rocks more than 3 billion years old in Australia’s Pilbara region. In 2005, Rasmussen reported here evidence that ancient oil in 3.2-billion-year-old rocks in Western Australia was produced from decayed organic matter. With the promise of discovering an increasing number of Earth-sized exoplanets increasing every day, new telescopes from across the world have the opportunity to contribute to this incredible field. Now, Canada proposes a novel micro-satellite mission called POET (Photometric Observations of Exoplanet Transits), which is currently in development and will search for and identify Earth-sized and super-Earth exoplanets orbiting stars smaller and cooler than our Sun, which the researchers refer to as “ultracool dwarfs”. These consist of K-type, M-type, and brown dwarf stars, the last of which are designated as “failed stars” whose sizes range between gas giant planets and M-type stars. The study is currently available as a preprint on arXiv and was previously submitted to the Proceedings of SPIE Volume 13627, Techniques and Instrumentation for Detection of Exoplanets XII. POET will detect the transits of exoplanets as they pass in front of their host star, which causes a small and brief dip in brightness, and is one of the most common methods for identifying and discovering exoplanets. Because POET will be searching for Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting ultracool dwarf stars, the dip in brightness is hypothesized to be much larger than Earth-sized exoplanets transiting much larger stars. This is because ultracool dwarfs are estimated to be approximately 10 percent of the Sun’s diameter, meaning the planet-to-star size ratio is much larger. POET builds on past Canadian micro-satellite space missions, specifically the MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars) and NEOSSat (Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite) space missions, which were launched in 2003 and 2013, respectively.
