"og_description": "Went down the rabbit hole on this. There are bacteria in your gut right now with tiny electric motors built into them. Each motor is 45 nanometers wide, about 2,000 times thinner than a human hair. It spins faster than a Formula 1 engine. After 50 years, scientists just cracked how it works.\n\nThe motor spins a corkscrew-shaped tail so the bacterium can swim. At that tiny scale, water feels as thick as tar. Moving anywhere takes serious power. A single E. coli cell (the kind in your gut) spins its motor at 18,000 RPM. That beats modern Formula 1 engines, which redline around 15,000. Some bacteria in the ocean run theirs at 42,000 RPM, nearly triple.\n\nAnd the motor barely wastes any energy as heat. Your car engine loses most of its fuel to heat. This thing loses almost none.\n\nInside the motor, 5 proteins form a ring wrapped around 2 proteins in the middle. Five can't split evenly into 2. The resulting lopsidedness is what makes the whole thing work. Protons, which are tiny charged particles, get pulled from outside the cell through the motor. Each one grabs a center protein, then lets go. In letting go, it tugs the outer ring a fraction of a turn. Another proton does the same thing on the other side. Then another. It's like two feet alternating on bicycle pedals. Over 2,000 times per second.\n\nSwitching directions is a whole other trick. When the bacterium senses food running out, it tags a small messenger protein with a phosphorus atom. That tagged messenger floats over and touches one protein on the outer ring. The touched protein flips into a new shape. That flip triggers the next protein, and the next, and the next, around the whole ring, like dominos falling. The ring reshapes in milliseconds. Rotation reverses. The bacterium turns and swims somewhere else.\n\nMike Manson, a biophysicist at Texas A&M, has been studying this one motor since the 1970s. For five decades, most of its parts stayed a mystery. Starting in 2020, a new wave of imaging let scientists see the individual pieces. The last pieces clicked into place in a March 2026 paper from Aravinthan Samuel's lab at Harvard. Manson told Quanta Magazine his lifelong quest was fulfilled.\n\nA billion years of evolution built the most efficient rotary motor on the planet. Trillions of them are spinning inside you right now.\n\nBacteria move around using a molecular machine called the flagellar motor that rotates faster than the flywheel of a race car engine and switches directions in an instant. After 50 yrs, scientists have finally figured out how it works. “My lifelong quest is now fulfilled.” Link",

A line often credited to Robert Frost jokes, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office,” and it keeps resurfacing in classrooms, offices, and daily motivation posts. Taken literally, it is not true. Your brain does not power down when you show up to work, but science does help explain why thinking can feel different once routines, deadlines, and notifications take over. WHY THE LINE FEELS SO REAL The quote lands because it describes a common shift, from open-ended thinking at home to structured thinking at work. One minute you are planning your day, the next you are answering messages and trying to remember what you were doing before the last interruption. Sound familiar? It also plays on a simple truth about routines. For many people, mornings come with a sense of possibility, while the office can feel like a place where your attention gets assigned to other people’s priorities. That contrast is easy to laugh at, even if the feeling is frustrating. Sign in here to read more. Diana DiZoglio, the state auditor of Massachusetts, is taking legislative leaders to court over alleged welfare fraud. M assachusetts is the only state where the legislature, the courts, and the governor’s office are largely exempt from public-records laws that require transparency. The Boston Herald says that Massachusetts has “the least transparent state government in the U.S.,” prompting the national Society of Professional Journalists to give the Bay State this year’s infamous “Black Hole” award — referring to the difficulty of gleaning any information about the state government’s inner workings. The situation is so dire that Diana DiZoglio, the elected Democratic state auditor, is taking her party’s legislative leaders to court after she uncovered $12 million in alleged welfare fraud. She notes that the legislature has not been audited since 1922. Evidence of abuses piled up high enough that, in 2024, 72 percent of state voters supported a ballot question to conduct such audits. But the legislature has refused to comply, citing separation of powers, and the state’s attorney general has defended the legislature’s position. “The legislature audits the executive branch,” responds DiZoglio. “But when the executive branch tries to provide a check back on the legislat... Mohammed-Bagher Ghalibaf, the Islamic Republic’s parliamentary speaker, said Monday the country has “prepared” during the truce — before lashing out at Trump, who renewed his threat to blitz Iranian infrastructure if talks are unsuccessful. “Trump, by imposing a siege and violating the cease-fire, seeks to turn this negotiating table — in his own imagination — into a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering,” Ghalibaf, who led the Iranian del... Science News from research organizations AFTER 200 YEARS SCIENTISTS FINALLY CRACK THE “DOLOMITE PROBLEM” A 200-YEAR MYSTERY IS CRACKED AS SCIENTISTS FINALLY GROW DOLOMITE—BY LEARNING HOW TO WASH AWAY ITS FLAWS. Date: April 20, 2026 Source: University of Michigan Summary: After two centuries of failed attempts, scientists have finally grown dolomite in the lab, cracking a long-standing geological puzzle. They discovered that the mineral’s growth stalls because of tiny defects—but in nature, those flaws get washed away over time. By mimicking this process with precise simulations and electron beam pulses, the team achieved record-breaking crystal growth. The finding could reshape how high-tech materials are made. The two scientists have developed a theory that could finally explain a two-century-old puzzle surrounding dolomite's abundance on Earth. Credit: Marcin Szczepanski, Lead Multimedia Storyteller, Michigan Engineering For more than two centuries, scientists tried and failed to grow dolomite in the lab under conditions thought to match how it forms in nature. A recent study has finally changed that. Researchers from the University of Michigan and Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan succeeded by developing a new theory based on detailed atomic simulations. Their work solves a long-standing geological puzzle known as the \"Dolomite Problem.\" Dolomite is a widespread mineral found in iconic locations such as the Dolomite mountains in Italy, Niagara Falls and Utah's Hoodoos. It is abundant in rocks older than 100 million years, yet it is rarely seen forming in more recent environments. \"If we understand how dolomite grows in nature, we might learn new strategies to promote the crystal growth of modern technological materials,\" said Wenhao Sun, the Dow Early Career Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at U-M and the corresponding author of the paper published in Science. By Rheanna O'Neil Bellomo, Hannah DoolinPublished: Mar 10, 2017 Every year since 2004, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes a \"Dirty Dozen\" list that ranks the most popular fruits and vegetables based on their pesticide residue levels. By analyzing pesticide residue data from more than 36,000 samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this year EWG found a total of 178 different pesticides on fresh produce samples tested–residues that remain even after items are washed and, in some cases, peeled. Here's the quick and dirty on which fruits and veggies you might want to be wary of at the grocery store. 1 STRAWBERRIES For the second year in a row, strawberries have been named the top carrier of pesticides in produce. In EWG's findings, 99 percent of the strawberries tested by federal officials contained detectable pesticide residues. Of those strawberry samples, 29 percent included residues of 10 or more pesticides while some contained as many as 21 different pesticides. 2 SPINACH This popular leafy green shot up the list from #8 in 2016 to the runner-up spot. Three-fourths of samples tested were contaminated with a neurotoxic bug killer that's banned from use on food crops in Europe. With an average of 7 pesticides found on every conventionally grown spinach sample collected in 2015, you'd be wise to thoroughly rinse the leaves before chowing down. Science News from research organizations ARTIFICIAL NEURONS SUCCESSFULLY COMMUNICATE WITH LIVING BRAIN CELLS PRINTED ARTIFICIAL NEURONS THAT CAN “TALK” TO THE BRAIN COULD REVOLUTIONIZE BOTH NEUROTECHNOLOGY AND ENERGY-HUNGRY AI. Date: April 18, 2026 Source: Northwestern University Summary: Engineers at Northwestern University have taken a striking leap toward merging machines with the human brain by printing artificial neurons that can actually communicate with real ones. These flexible, low-cost devices generate lifelike electrical signals capable of activating living brain cells, a breakthrough demonstrated in mouse brain tissue. Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email FULL STORY An aerosol jet printer in Hersam's laboratory deposits electronic inks onto a flexible polymer substrate. Credit: Mark Hersam/Northwestern University Engineers at Northwestern University have created printed artificial neurons that go beyond imitation and can directly interact with real brain cells. These flexible, low-cost devices produce electrical signals that closely resemble those generated by living neurons, allowing them to activate biological brain tissue. In experiments using slices of mouse brain, the artificial neurons successfully triggered responses in real neurons. This result shows a new level of compatibility between electronic devices and living neural systems. Toward Brain Interfaces and Energy-Efficient AI This advance moves researchers closer to electronics that can directly interface with the nervous system. Potential uses include brain-machine interfaces and neuroprosthetics, such as implants that could help restore hearing, vision, or movement. The technology also points toward a new generation of computing systems inspired by the brain. By replicating how neurons communicate, future hardware could perform complex tasks using far less energy. The brain remains the most energy-efficient computing system known, and scientists hope to apply its principles to modern technology. The study will be published on April 15 in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. \"The world we live in today is dominated by artificial intelligence (AI),\" said Northwestern's Mark C. Hersam, who led the study. \"The way you make AI smarte... [Truncated]",

Little did they know, their experiment would reveal a surprising twist involving the sun. Published on April 17, 2026 at 08:15 | Written by Melissa Ait Lounis | Reading time : 3 minutes © Credit: Chun-Yu SuShare this post Share on X Send through Whatsapp Copy the link Scientists recently built a life-sized oviraptor nest to crack the mystery of how these ancient dinosaurs hatched their eggs. The results were unexpected: it turns out that oviraptors, unlike modern birds, likely relied more on environmental heat than their own body warmth to incubate their eggs. The study, published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, looks at whether they brooded their eggs like birds do today or whether they relied more on heat from their surroundings, much like reptiles. To get answers, researchers in Taiwan recreated a real-life oviraptor nest and ran heat transfer simulations to explore how egg incubation patterns might have worked. A NEW WAY TO STUDY DINOSAUR BEHAVIOR Oviraptors lived around 70 to 66 million years ago, and their exact nesting behaviors have long been a topic of debate. Scientists weren’t sure whether these dinosaurs used their body heat to incubate eggs like modern birds or if they relied on environmental heat, such as sunlight or warm soil, like reptiles. Fossil evidence has been limited, leaving researchers to guess. To answer this, the Taiwanese team built a life-sized model of an oviraptor using foam, wood, and other materials to mimic its body. They also recreated the nest based on fossilized nests, which had multiple rings of eggs. Side view of the clutch with the incubator placed on top. Credit: Chun-Yu Su According to Dr. Tzu-Ruei Yang, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology at the National Museum of Natural Science, based in Taiwan : “We show the difference in oviraptor hatching patterns was induced by the relative position of the incubating adult to the eggs.” HOW HEAT AFFECTED EGG INCUBATION The researchers tested how different temperatures and the presence of a brooding adult influenced how the ... NewsNation IS A ‘SUPER’ EL NIÑO COMING THIS SUMMER, AND HOW COULD IT IMPACT WEATHER? Zach Kaplan 21 hours ago (NewsNation) — Federal officials say there is a growing chance the climate phenomenon known as El Niño will develop this summer, with some forecasts suggesting a historically strong one is on its way. El Niño is a warming of the ocean’s surface in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, according to the United States Geological Survey. It occurs once every two to seven years and affects weather patterns worldwide. In the United States, the phenomenon can affect weather in many ways, including storms, flooding, and landslides in Southern California, as well as heavy rainfall and flooding in states along the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Oceanography Department at the Naval Postgraduate School. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration gives a roughly 60% chance El Niño will emerge between May and July of this year, with that probability rising to 90% between Aug. and Oct. Missouri Gov. Kehoe declares ‘State of Emergency’ ahead of severe weather NOAA announced earlier this month that La Niña, the opposite weather phenomenon characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures, has officially ended. ‘SUPER EL NIÑO’: WHAT TO KNOW The “super El Niño” circumstance occurs when temperatures rise at least 2.0°C above normal, according to Matthew Sittel, assistant state climatologist at Kansas State University. While this level of El Niño is rare, with only four since 1950, NOAA says there’s approximately a 50% chance this year’s could develop into a “strong” or “very strong” one. The last super El Niño occurred during 2015 and lasted into 2016. Federal officials note that a stronger El Niño doesn’t necessarily equate to more extreme weather. Dam failure fears grow across Michigan as water levels surge “Stronger events do not always mean bigger weather and climate impacts,” according to NOAA. “Stronger events make it more likely that certain impacts could occur.” SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – APRIL 9: A surfer waits for a wave during sunset at La Jolla Shores beach on April 9, 2026 in San Diego, CA. The Gemini app provides a polished way to access Google’s models, with the ultimate goal of being a universal AI assistant. In comparison, AI Studio is for building and exploring what Gemini can do. It’s aimed at vibe coding ahead of using the Gemini API directly in your projects. At the start, AI Studio provided generous access to the models, but Google has slowly been curtailing that and requiring users to pay for their API usage. Recent updates added a prepay billing model and let users set Spend Caps. As an alternative to that, Google AI Pro ($19.99 per month) and Ultra ($249.99/month) subscriptions now come with “higher usage limits and access to Nano Banana Pro and Gemini Pro models.” The subscriptions also unlock higher access to Google Antigravity, Jules, Gemini Code Assist, and Gemini CLI. Politics OVER 250 JOURNALISTS DEMAND REPORTERS ‘FORCEFULLY’ PROTEST TRUMP AT WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER By Ryan King Published April 20, 2026, 10:17 a.m. PT WASHINGTON — Forget covering protests — some reporters think they should be the ones making the ruckus. A group of over 250 journalists implored members of the Beltway press corps to “forcefully demonstrate opposition” to President Trump at the ritzy White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday. Trump, 79, is set to attend the swanky dinner for the first time in his presidency. But the group of 250 reporters is demanding that the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) ensure he doesn’t feel welcome. 4 President Trump has previously blamed the press’s treatment of him for his decision to skip prior WHCA dinners. Your task is to produce a high-quality curated post using advanced grouping techniques:
- Employ sophisticated thematic analysis: detect latent connections, narrative arcs, opposing viewpoints, chronological progressions, intersections with current events, and deeper conceptual clusters.
- Create 3–7 meaningful, tightly coherent groups (avoid superficial or forced groupings; prefer fewer strong clusters over many weak ones).
- Choose precise, evocative topic names.
For each group:
- Start with "## Topic Name"
- Follow immediately with a classical rhymed and metrical poem (e.g., Shakespearean sonnet, Petrarchan sonnet, limerick sequence, heroic couplets, or similar form) that serves as an engaging, insightful preamble capturing the theme, context, and why it matters now. Present the entire poem in italicized Markdown by wrapping the whole poem block between * and * on their own lines (like a block). NEVER add **bold** around the ## group titles — output them exactly as plain ## Title Name.
- Then list the relevant bookmarks as bullet points:
- **[og_title](url)**: One sharp, engaging sentence description (hooky, informative, and additive; refine og_description or write your own if better).
- If og_image is a valid http/https URL, place the following immediately on the next line (no blank line):

Any true singletons go in a final "## Miscellaneous" section with the same format. // ← CHANGED TO ##
Output EXACTLY the complete clean markdown body for the blog post (starting with the first ## header; no extra text, no introductions, no closing remarks, no separators).
