FULL TEXT: I had no idea how wild the story of human evolution was before chatting with the geneticist of ancient DNA David Reich.
Human history has been again and again a story of one group figuring ‘something’ out, and then basically wiping everyone else out.
From the tribe of 1k-10k modern humans 70,000 years ago who killed off all the other human species; to the Yamnaya horse nomads 5,000 years ago who killed off 90+% of (then) Europeans and also destroyed the Indus Valley Civilization.
So much of what we thought we knew about human history is turning out to be wrong, from the ‘Out of Africa’ theory to the evolution of language, and this is all thanks to the research from David Reich’s lab.
Extremely fascinating stuff.

This comet came to us from the farthest outskirts of the Solar System — the Oort Cloud — a region where galactic gravitational forces can noticeably influence the orbits of small bodies. The comet has a slightly hyperbolic orbit, with an estimated orbital period around the Sun of about 170,000 years. There is also a chance that after this passage it may be ejected from the Solar System entirely, becoming an interstellar traveler. Just imagine: when this comet began its journey toward the Sun, Neanderthals still lived on Earth. By the time it passed perihelion, we had entered the age of quantum computers and yet we have only a two-month observing window for this emerald beauty in the southern night sky. What is also interesting about this comet is the way it was discovered. It was detected last autumn by the Pan-STARRS survey in Hawaii, about 3.6 AU from the Sun, as a faint moving object of about magnitude 20, with no visible tail. Because of its slightly hyperbolic orbit, it could be considered an interstellar candidate at the early detection stage, when the object first appears in alerts, and it is not yet clear what we are looking at. This is exactly what I have been seeing over the last two months in Rubin alerts as well: many unknown moving objects that require further analysis before they can be clearly identified. I have been working on a pipeline to detect such objects and rank them into a top 20 list of potential interstellar or new comet candidates. What I have found is that there is a long road between the first faint detection and a beautiful image like the one above. To u... [Truncated]

Through observations made during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, he developed the theory of evolution by natural selection, proposing that species change over time as heritable traits that improve survival and reproduction become more common. Credit: Shutterstock Galápagos plants show repeated evolution and emerging species, emphasizing evolution’s flexibility and active role today. The Galápagos Islands have long stood as a living laboratory of evolution, but their story is far from finished. Nearly two centuries after Darwin’s famous finches reshaped our understanding of life, new research reveals that evolution on these remote islands is still unfolding in unexpected ways. When Charles Darwin arrived in 1835 aboard the HMS Beagle, he collected birds that he later studied in England. At first, he thought they included sparrows, woodpeckers, finches, and even a single tit. He later realized they were all closely related finches, with differences in their beaks reflecting adaptations to different diets. This became a classic example of parallel evolution, where similar traits emerge more than once but through different genetic routes. Darwin’s observations of these finches helped support his theory of evolution by natural selection, showing how species can change over time in response to their environments. “More than 150 years after Darwin’s work on the Galápagos transformed our understanding of life on Earth, these islands continue to reveal new biology,” says Professor Michael D. Martin at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) University Museum. This was the site of the chemical experiment uncovering diverse organic molecules on Mars, in the Glen Torridon region, which scientists believe was a site where ancient conditions would have been favorable to supporting life, if it ever was present. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS Curiosity just found molecules on Mars tied to the chemistry of life, hinting at a more habitable past. NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered a wide variety of organic molecules on Mars, including compounds often viewed as essential ingredients for the origin of life on Earth. These results come from a chemical experiment carried out on another planet for the first time. The findings show that the Martian surface can preserve molecules that might serve as indicators of ancient life. However, the experiment cannot determine whether these organic compounds formed from past life on Mars, natural geological activity, or arrived via meteorites. To confirm any true signs of past life, scientists would need to return Martian rock samples to Earth for more detailed analysis. The Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover captured this mosaic as it explored the “clay-bearing unit” on February 3, 2019 (Sol 2309) where samples were taken that identified diverse organic molecules on Mars. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSSNew Experiment Points to Long-Term Preservation The research was led by Amy Williams, Ph.D., a professor of geological sciences at the University of Florida and a member of the Curiosity and Perseverance rover science teams. Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012 to investigate whether the planet once had conditions suitable for microbial life billions of years ago. Perseverance, which arrived in 2021, is focused on searching for direct evidence of ancient life. “We think we’re looking at organic matter that’s been preserved on Mars for 3... [Truncated]

FORECAST:
Over the next 30–90 days, Republicans will likely incorporate ancient DNA and human violence narratives into broader “realism” messaging about borders, human nature, and civilizational competition, amplified by influencers on X and conservative podcasts, with modest traction (15–25% of base) among those already skeptical of progressive views on history. Democrats and legacy media will frame these discussions as dangerous misappropriation of science that risks justifying racism or authoritarianism, producing brief rebuttal segments without engaging the underlying data. The broader public will show limited sustained interest, with scientific coverage in outlets like SciTechDaily remaining siloed from political discourse. Uncertainty remains high regarding whether a major cultural artifact (film, book, or viral video) could temporarily bridge the science-politics divide.

Through observations made during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, he developed the theory of evolution by natural selection, proposing that species change over time as heritable traits that improve survival and reproduction become more common. [Truncated]
