Working-class voters want to hear much less about “hating Trump” and much more about tackling “bread and butter” issues.
As we get closer to the midterms in November and the presidential election in 2028, one has to wonder if any of the Democrats in leadership positions — be they in Congress, in the Democratic National Committee or the billionaires bankrolling various initiatives in favor of leftist causes — actually know or speak with any working-class Americans on a regular basis. As someone who grew up in abject poverty, I have long stayed in touch with parents and individuals who live paycheck to paycheck. Some are Democrats. Some are Republicans. Some are fiercely independent. Most are facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles tied to the cost of living, rising crime, and an increasingly bleak future for their children. These Americans, who make up the vast majority of our population, have grown wary of leaders representing both political parties who float high above them and their increasing misery in bubbles of entitlement, luxury and purposeful ignorance. They may not understand the intricacies of politics and policy, but they recognize nonsense and abdication of responsibility when they see it. Earlier this week, CNN’s exceptional numbers guru, Harry Enten, threw a bucket of very cold water in the face of the growing number of Democrats who seemingly believe that the midterm elections are in the bag for the party. Despite some polls highlighting falling favorability numbers for President Trump in direct correlation with the rising cost of living, Enten reminds us that those pesky Republicans are not only still hanging around, they remain quite competitive across much of the nation. “I think,” stressed Enten, “this poll serves as a big-time reality check for Democrats, and that is it ain’t over yet, especially with the redistricting when we look ahead to the 2026 race for Congress. You would have thought that the Democrats’ lead would expand on the generic congressional ballot. It didn’t happen.” Not only did it not happen, but the lead may be shrinking. Why? It seems those who run the Democratic Party and its various message machines are simply incapable of reading the room or disavowing their failed "Can't Lose, Hate Trump" campaign strategy of 2024. Working-class Americans are not stupid. They may be overwhelmed, because of the bad and partisan policies foisted upon them, but they are very smart, and they are very aware. They know when their hard-earned paychecks do not go as far as the month or even week before. Suddenly, many must choose which utility to pay or how to tell their child a birthday present will have to be delayed. Every single one of these working-class Americans get that the Democrats “hate” Trump. They are sick of getting it. What they don’t yet “get” from the Democrats, though, is how they are going to address the very real issue of the continually shrinking buying power of their paychecks. They want to hear much less about "hating Trump" and much more about tackling bread and butter issues. Amazingly, they are not. In a gift to the wounded Republican Party, many in the Democratic Party seem to have doubled down on the “We hate Trump” narrative used in the last three national elections. Coupled with that is another very real problem for Democrats who felt they had the midterms wrapped up: the openly socialist mayors they elected to lead New York City and Seattle. These working-class Americans are deeply disturbed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, whose far-left policies seem to be echoing those seen in China, the former Soviet Union, and Cuba. More troubling to them is that the leadership of the Democratic Party is embracing their socialistic giveaways and attacks on job creators, when they should be distancing themselves. For the Democratic leadership, the question of the moment is this: How do you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and blow the midterms in November? Easy. Regurgitate the failed message of 2024 that you “hate” Trump while literally embracing those who advocate for the U.S. to be transformed into a socialist and even communist nation. Read the room.
