General intelligence explains the link between math and music skills
Added: May 2, 2026General intelligence explains the link between math and music skills
Site: PsyPost - Psychology News
A new study reveals that the long-standing belief connecting mathematical and musical abilities is largely explained by general intelligence. When researchers controlled for cognitive reasoning, the apparent link between being good at math and music practically disappeared.
A study of young adults with backgrounds in mathematics or music found that individuals with better mathematical abilities tended to have better musical abilities as well, and vice versa. However, this association was most likely caused by intelligence being an important contributor to both groups of abilities. The paper was published in the Journal of Intelligence.
Musical abilities are skills involved in perceiving, understanding, remembering, and producing musical elements. They include activities such as perceiving pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, and musical structure, as well as producing or performing music. Mathematical abilities, on the other hand, include skills such as understanding numbers, quantities, patterns, spatial relations, logical relations, and abstract symbolic rules.
Researchers notice that music and mathematics have a deep relationship. Music is based on mathematical principles such as ratios and repeating patterns. Similarly, musical and mathematics abilities are also related because both involve pattern detection, sequencing, memory, attention, and rule-based processing. Rhythm perception, for example, requires sensitivity to timing and ratios, which are also important in mathematics.
Music theory also contains mathematical elements, such as intervals, proportions, scales, and harmonic relations. Some studies find small to moderate positive associations between musical training and mathematical performance.
Study author Michaela A. Meier and her colleagues investigated the relationship between different facets of musical and mathematical abilities. They note that evidence on the relationship between music and mathematics is mixed, with many studies reporting low to moderate associations and similarly sized effects of music training on mathematics achievements. Based on this, study authors expected to find small to moderate positive associations between different aspects of musical and mathematics abilities.
Study participants were 170 adults. 99 of them were women. Their average age was 25 years. Study authors recruited three different groups – 1) the mathematics group, comprised of students or graduates working in the fields of mathematics, physics, engineering, or related fields; 2) the music group, comprised of students or graduates of music, music education, musicology, or a related field; 3) the control group, comprised of participants who neither excelled in mathematics nor in music, and who were studying or working in a field unrelated to music or mathematics (mostly psychology).
Study participants completed assessments of musical abilities (three tasks focusing on musical perception – the computerized adaptive Beat Alignment Test, the Mistuning Perception Test, and the Melodic Discrimination Test), mathematical abilities (tests of basic numerical abilities task, arithmetic fluency, and higher mathematical knowledge). They also completed self-report questionnaires about their general musical activity (the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index), mathematical experience (the mathematical Sophistication Index), and an assessment of intelligence (the Intelligence Structure Test).
Results showed mostly weak associations between tests of mathematical and musical abilities. Both tests of mathematical and musical abilities had weak to moderate positive associations with intelligence. In other words, participants with better mathematical or musical abilities tended to be somewhat more intelligent compared to participants with worse mathematical and musical abilities. The only exception was the Beat Alignment Test, performance on which was not associated with intelligence.
In general, associations of intelligence with mathematical abilities tended to be somewhat stronger than associations with musical abilities. When study authors explored whether musical and mathematics abilities remain associated when their links with intelligence are controlled for, results showed that their association was reduced to almost 0. This means that the link between mathematical and musical abilities is likely produced by intelligence affecting both groups of abilities.
“These results imply that intelligence accounts for a substantial proportion of the association between mathematical and musical abilities," the study authors concluded.
The study contributes to the scientific understanding of the nature of musical and mathematical abilities. However, it should be noted that the design of this study does not allow any causal inferences to be derived from the results.
The paper, “Are Mathematical and Musical Abilities Related Beyond Intelligence?,” was authored by Michaela A. Meier, Lara Spitzley, Serra Ulusoy, Alexandra Hubmann, Rylie DelaCruz, Roland H. Grabner, and Daniel Müllensiefen.

The partisan battle over authorizing the Iran War has shifted to one of semantics, as the sides haggle over a contentious deadline created by a Vietnam-era law. On Friday, the conflict hit the 60-day mark — a critical marker under the 1973 War Powers Act — and Democrats are using the milestone to fuel their efforts to force President Trump to end the military campaign against Tehran immediately, unless Congress explicitly approves it. Trump and his Republican allies are pushing back, arguing that the conflict never rose to the level of a “war,” precluding the need for congressional consent. They also maintain that, even if it did meet that distinction, the current ceasefire has effectively ended the shooting part of the war long before the 60-day threshold was met. The clash is renewing the age-old debate over the separation of powers when it comes to the use of military force. And it promises to continue for many weeks to come, as Democrats are vowing a strategy of forcing vote after vote on war powers resolutions, if only to put Republicans on record supporting a conflict that’s grown wildly unpopular with voters. “The Founders of our country gave Congress, as representatives of the American people, the ultimate decision of when we go to war,” said Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.). “Trump has no plan to sustain the current conflict, no plan to transition the current Iranian government toward democracy, and no plan to de-escalate or contain the conflict from spreading throughout the region.” Garamendi is among a growing list of liberal Democrats who have introduced war powers resolutions in the days leading up to the 60-day threshold. The campaign, being led by the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), is designed to stagger the resolutions so they “ripen” — that is, mature to the point of becoming eligible for a floor vote — on a rolling basis. The tactic will allow Democrats to force a barrage of votes on the war, interspersed at regular intervals as Congress inches closer to the midterm elections. “This is what I hope will be a steady stream of these until we get some Republicans to join us,” said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), who has sponsored his own war powers resolution. So far, Republicans have been virtually united against the notion of limiting Trump’s war powers. Two resolutions have already come to the floor in the House, and six more in the Senate. All of them have been blocked by Trump’s GOP allies, who have warned that any effort to restrain U.S. forces amid the conflict will only empower Tehran’s Islamic regime at the expense of America’s national security. "I don't think we have an active, kinetic military bombing, firing or anything like that. Right now, we are trying to broker a peace," Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told NBC News on Thursday. "I would be very reluctant to get in front of the administration in the midst of these very sensitive negotiations, so we'll have to see how that plays out." That same day, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a similar message to the Senate, arguing that the days since the ceasefire, which began on April 7, don’t count toward the 60-day threshold. "We are in a ceasefire right now, which our understanding means the 60-day clock pauses, or stops, in a ceasefire," he said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Trump on Friday intensified the debate dramatically, telling reporters the War Powers Act is unconstitutional. He also sent a letter to Johnson and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the Senate’s president pro tempore, saying the fighting has ended, nullifying the need for Congress to weigh in. “There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026,” Trump wrote. “The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have terminated.” Still, Trump also warned that Tehran’s forces remain an active threat, and for that reason he’ll be keeping U.S. forces on the ready in the region. “I appreciate the support of the Congress in these actions,” he wrote. Democrats have no intention of providing it. They’re accusing the administration of violating Article I of the Constitution, which stipulates that only Congress has the authority to “declare war.” Democrats also say GOP leaders are misrepresenting the intent of the War Powers Act, which was designed to limit a president’s authority to conduct war without the expressed consent of Congress. Under the law, the president must inform Congress within 48 hours of launching military operations, and the armed forces must be withdrawn within 60 days afterwards, with the option of requesting a 30-day extension. Trump gave the initial notice, but says he has no plan to either withdraw forces or seek congressional approval to keep them there. "Republicans are twisting the War Powers Act beyond all recognition,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), the vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. “That statute was meant to limit the president's power not to expand it. And in any event, no federal statute can override the Constitution and the Constitution is clear only Congress can declare a war. “And we're in a war.” Politically, Democrats have every reason to highlight the Iran conflict whenever they can. Polls increasingly indicate that voters oppose the war, and the numbers are getting worse for the administration as the conflict grows longer and the economic effects — particularly the spike in gas prices — hit more and more people in their wallets. A new survey released Friday by The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos found that 61 percent of respondents said it was a mistake to launch the strikes at all. The effects of that unpopularity are beginning to show in the Capitol, where more and more Republicans are beginning to voice reservations about the wisdom of continuing the conflict, particularly without the input of Congress. A Senate vote on a war powers resolution on Thursday — the sixth to hit the floor of the upper chamber since the conflict began — failed by a vote of 47 to 50. But in a sign that Republicans are beginning to face some heat at home, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who’s facing a tough reelection contest in November, crossed the aisle for the first time to join Democrats and GOP Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in support of the bill. “The 60-day trigger is a very important one,” she said this week. “At that point, Congress has to authorize the military action to continue.” Democrats are hoping to exploit the growing Republican concerns by continuing to put war powers resolutions on the floor and all but daring GOP lawmakers to oppose them. They’re hoping the arrival of the 60-day marker lends them a boost, even if Trump is dismissing it as irrelevant. “We want to get this bill passed. Clearly, to pass it, you have to have some Republicans,” said Rep. Greg Meeks (N.Y.), the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “We're hoping, because of the 60 day period — that had been the excuse that some Republicans utilized for not jumping on. So that excuse evaporates."

Comedian Jon Stewart said Wednesday the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the party's leaders were “lost” while discussing the Maine Senate campaign. Stewart was interviewing Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, who said he had not been contacted by the DNC or Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). The DNC does not traditionally endorse in primaries but announced its endorsement of Platner on Tuesday following Maine Gov. Janet Mills's (D) decision to suspend her campaign. During the interview with Stewart, which was conducted before Mills dropped out of the race, Platner questioned the DSCC's previous endorsement of the governor, alleging the party's Senate campaign arm did not reach out to him, despite polling in his favor. “They’re lost, dude. They’re lost,” Stewart said during his “The Weekly Show” podcast. “It’s so bad,” Platner chimed in. Stewart said Platner likely hadn’t received formal outreach from the Democratic Party because of doubts about his electability. “You’re either a moderate Democrat or you’re a left-wing firebrand. And so what they’re saying is, oh sure, the left-wing firebrand — that does well in the primary, but that’ll never travel,” Stewart said. “There’s something crazy about this, as though you are ... the Democratic equivalent of a MAGA loyalist who has come out with wildly controversial positions,” he added. Platner is considered a progressive by some and has centered his campaign on affordability for housing and healthcare. The oyster farmer has received support from Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) but has said that establishment Democrats have been hesitant to reach out. On the other hand, Mills received support from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the DSCC and EMILY’s List, which decided to endorse the governor after Platner's controversy regarding online posts and a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol. Platner has said he won’t back Schumer as party leader. He told Stewart that the best way for Democrats to build political power is “through getting people like me into the U.S. Senate." Those in power must be pressured before they'll act, he said. “There has never been a moment in American history where we've gotten good things just because the institutions or people in power decided to do it,” he told the comedian. Crabs’ famous sideways walk may trace back to a single evolutionary moment 200 million years ago. Researchers found that most modern crabs inherited this trait from one ancestor—and never looked back. The movement likely gave them an edge, helping them dodge predators with quick, unpredictable bursts. It’s a rare example of a behavior evolving once and then dominating an entire group.
