DNA research just rewrote the origin of human species
Site: ScienceDaily
Scientists have uncovered a surprising new picture of human origins that challenges the long-held idea of a single ancestral population in Africa. By analyzing genetic data from diverse modern African groupsâespecially the highly distinct Nama peopleâand comparing it with fossil evidence, researchers found that early humans likely evolved from multiple intermingling populations over hundreds of thousands of years. Rather than a clean split, these groups stayed connected, exchanging genes even after beginning to diverge around 120,000â135,000 years ago.

Cole Tomas Allen: Correspondentsâ dinner gunman left writings, family raised concerns Added: Apr 26, 2026
What we know about the suspect in the WH Correspondents' Dinner shooting
Site: NewsNation
A heavily armed man rushed a Secret Service checkpoint, exchanging gunfire with law enforcement before being subdued, officials said.
(NewsNation) â A man armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives rushed a Secret Service checkpoint outside the White House Correspondentsâ Dinner on Saturday night, exchanging gunfire with law enforcement before being subdued, officials said. President Donald Trump told the press that the suspect, later identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, according to law enforcement, had been captured and that investigators were headed to his apartment. Allen, he said, had been âtotally subdued and under controlâ by Secret Service officers. Law enforcement officials who have interviewed Allenâs relatives, examined the gunmanâs electronic devices and his writings preliminarily believe he intended to target administration members in attendance at the dinner. U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sunday said that law enforcement believes that the alleged shooter was targeting Trump administration officials. The suspected shooter's manifesto was âspecific," according to a source familiar with the investigation. "It does appear that he, he did, in fact, have set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the President," Blanche told NBC News, adding that the suspect likely traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C. In his writings, Allen is said to have referred to himself as a âFriendly Federal Assassin,â railing against Trump administration policies. Outlined grievances covered a range of recent actions by the administration, including U.S. strikes on drug smuggling boats in the eastern Pacific. Investigators are treating the writings, along with a trail of social media posts and interviews with family members, as some of the clearest evidence yet of the suspectâs mindset and possible motives. Authorities uncovered what one law enforcement official described as numerous anti-Trump social media posts. The New York Post reports that the manifesto noted that targeted officials were ranked by priority. "Administration officials (not including Mr. Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest," the manifesto read. In addition, a law enforcement source tells NewsNation that Allen's manifesto specifically stated he was not targeting law enforcement. The writings examined by AP ran more than 1,000 words and read as a rambling, deeply personal message, opening almost jarringly with a casual âhello everybody!â before shifting into apologies to family members and co-workers, and even strangers he feared could be caught in the violence. The note moved between confession, grievance and farewell, with Allen thanking people in his life even as he sought to explain the attack. Elsewhere, he veered between political anger, religious justifications and rebuttals to imagined critics. He also made a taunting critique of security at the Washington Hilton, mocking what he described as lax precautions and expressing surprise he was able to enter the hotel armed without detection. The accused gunmanâs family had alerted police in Connecticut, Trump said, revealing new details about a chaotic encounter that disrupted one of Washingtonâs glitziest annual events the night before. Allenâs brother contacted police in New London, Connecticut, after receiving the writings. Federal agents interviewed Allenâs sister in Maryland, who told investigators her brother had legally purchased several weapons from a California gun store and stored them at their parentsâ home in Torrance without their knowledge, according to The Associated Press. She described her brother as prone to making radical statements, a law enforcement official told the outlet. The official also noted that Allen had legally bought a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol in October 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun two years later. Speaking with reporters on Sunday, Trump suggested Allen's motivation were a "religious thing," adding it was "strongly anti-Christian." "He's got some big problems with the rest of his life", Trump said. Trump also reflected on the dangers of holding office as president. "If you're a consequential president you're in much more danger than if you're not a consequential president." Blanche said Allen is not being cooperative and is expected to face multiple charges on Monday, according to CNN. âWe are not viewing him as cooperating necessarily right now, although we will see what happens going forward," Blanche said. âThe way that these charges work, a lot of the charges that he could be charged with depends on us understanding his motive, his premeditation [and] what he wanted to do." He added that Allen could "absolutely" be charged with attempting to assassinate Trump. Law enforcement officials said the suspect, described as a âsole gunman,â rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at 8:36 p.m., running toward the ballroom where Trump and other high-profile political figures were gathered, with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. D.C. Metro Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said Allen was a guest at the hotel. NewsNation sources say writings by Allen were found in his hotel room, as well as his Los Angeles home. "We do know that law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual," Carroll told the gathered press, later clarifying that preliminary details indicated that Allen did discharge a weapon, although he noted that it was early in the investigation. Allen was stopped by Secret Service officers and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Allen was not struck by gunfire, officials said. Trump told reporters Saturday night that one officer was shot at close range but was not seriously hurt, thanks to a bulletproof vest, and was in "great shape." Social media posts that appear to match Allen show he is a highly educated tutor and amateur video game developer, according to The Associated Press. He holds both a bachelorâs and a masterâs degree in mechanical engineering and computer science. He's a self-described video game designer who's also been a part-time teacher and tutor for the past six years. During his undergrad at Caltech, he was also listed as a member of a Christian fellowship group and a campus group that battled with Nerf guns Allen contributed $25 to a Democratic Party political action committee in support of Kamala Harris for president in 2024, according to federal campaign finance records. A post under Allenâs name said he was working to develop a new âtop-down shooterâ combat game set in outer space. Allenâs online resume says he worked for the last six years at C2 Education, a company that offers admissions counseling and test preparation services to aspiring college students. A 2024 post on the companyâs Facebook page listed Allen as the companyâs teacher of the month. Photos and videos posted by Trump on social media showed Allen shirtless, on the ground. The video depicted Allen running past several armed security officers. As he passed, one officer appeared to draw a weapon. It was not immediately clear whether the officer fired. Trump said the suspect charged the checkpoint armed with multiple weapons and was subdued by Secret Service members. He described the suspect as âa guy who looked pretty evilâ and said he was âfighting hardâ while being pinned down by law enforcement. He added that investigators believed him to be a âlone wolf,â a view he agreed with. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the investigation was ongoing and that charges were expected to be filed shortly, including firearms offenses and other possible counts. Federal law enforcement officials were working to obtain search warrants, he said. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect faces two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. "It is clear, based upon what we know so far, that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could," Pirro said. She also said more charges will likely be added. FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators were examining ballistics evidence, including a long gun and shell casings, and conducting interviews. He encouraged anyone with information to contact the FBI. Allen will be arraigned Monday in federal court. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Quote of the day by Immanuel Kant: 'If you punish a child for being naughty, and reward him for being good, he will do right just for the reward...' - Why morality should not depend on rewards or fear explained by the German philosopher - The Economic Times
Immanuel Kant, one of the most influential philosophers of the Enlightenment period, continues to be widely read even today for his thoughts on ethics, human behaviour, and moral responsibility. Among his many ideas, one of the most frequently quoted reflections on childhood education and moral development highlights how reward-based upbringing can shape a personâs entire outlook on life. The quote of the day reads: âIf you punish a child for being naughty, and reward him for being good, he will do right merely for the sake of the reward; and when he goes out into the world and finds that goodness is not always rewarded, nor wickedness always punished, he will grow into a man who only thinks about how he may get on in the world, and does right or wrong according as he finds advantage to himself.âThis statement is often discussed in the context of Kantâs broader moral philosophy, especially his belief that actions should come from duty rather than external incentives. It comes from his reflections on education, where he examined how early discipline shapes long-term ethical behaviour.Understanding the Core Idea Behind the QuoteAt the centre of this quote of the day is Kantâs concern about motivation. He suggests that when children are taught morality only through rewards and punishments, they begin to associate âgood behaviourâ with personal gain rather than with inner responsibility. Over time, this creates a mindset where actions are guided less by what is right and more by what is beneficial.Kant believed this approach limits moral growth. If a child learns to behave well only because of rewards, then the moment rewards disappear, so does the motivation to act rightly. In his view, this creates a fragile moral foundation that does not survive real-world complexities. 130582457Moral Behaviour Beyond Rewards and PunishmentsIn the second layer of Kantâs argument, he shifts focus from childhood learning to adult life. He points out a practical problem: the world does not always reward good actions or punish bad ones in a consistent way. This inconsistency, according to him, becomes a turning point in shaping character. When a person raised on reward-based morality enters such a world, they may begin to question why they should continue doing good at all. If kindness or honesty does not always bring benefit, the person may slowly shift towards self-interest. Kant warns that this leads to a kind of moral instability where decisions are made based on advantage rather than principle.Kantâs View on Duty and Inner ResponsibilityKantâs larger philosophy, especially in his ethical writings, strongly supports the idea that morality should be based on duty. He argued that a truly moral action is one that is done because it is right, not because it leads to reward or avoids punishment. In his moral framework, external incentives are not enough to build a strong ethical personality. Instead, he believed that individuals should develop an internal sense of responsibility. This means doing what is right even when there is no immediate benefit or recognition. This idea connects directly to his famous principle of duty-based ethics, where moral value comes from intention rather than outcome. In simple terms, what matters is not what you gain from an action, but why you chose to do it. 130558933Immanuel Kant: The Philosopher Behind the IdeaImmanuel Kant (1724â1804) was a German philosopher who shaped modern thinking in ethics, knowledge, and human understanding. He spent most of his life in KĂśnigsberg, where he worked as a teacher and writer, producing some of the most important philosophical works in Western history. He is best known for developing critical philosophy, which examined how humans perceive knowledge and make moral decisions. His major works include Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, and Critique of Judgment. Across these writings, Kant consistently emphasized reason, duty, and human autonomy. In ethics, he became known for deontological philosophy, which focuses on duty rather than consequences. His belief was simple but strict: morality should not depend on outcomes but on universal principles that apply to everyone equally. 130560602Education and Moral Formation in Kantâs ThoughtKant also wrote about education and how moral habits are formed early in life. He was critical of systems that rely too heavily on external rewards. In his view, this kind of training may produce obedient children, but it does not necessarily produce morally strong adults. He believed education should help children understand why something is right, not just teach them to follow rules for rewards. The goal, according to him, is to build a stable moral character that does the right thing even without supervision or benefit. 130489125Even in modern discussions about parenting and education, Kantâs idea is still relevant. Many debates today revolve around whether reward systems truly teach responsibility or simply create dependency on incentives. His warning remains simple: if morality is built only on rewards and punishments, it may collapse when those systems fail. Instead, he encourages building a sense of internal discipline, where a person chooses good behaviour because they understand its value, not because they expect something in return.A point that is often less talked about is how Immanuel Kant gained major recognition relatively late in his life. His most important works, including Critique of Pure Reason, were published when he was in his late 50s, which is quite unusual compared to many thinkers who peak earlier. 130615557Despite living a very routine and limited geographical life in KĂśnigsberg, he managed to influence global thought in a big way. In fact, the year 2024 marked the 300th anniversary of his birth, and it was observed with exhibitions and academic discussions across Germany, showing that his ideas still continue to be studied and debated even centuries later.Another lesser-known part of Kantâs life is that he spent nearly 15 years working as a private tutor for different families before securing a stable academic position. This phase exposed him to everyday social life outside the university system and is believed to have shaped his practical understanding of human behaviour. Even after he became a lecturer, he did not limit himself to philosophy alone. Kant regularly taught subjects like geography, physics, and even topics like fortifications and fireworks. His lectures were known to be lively and engaging, quite unlike his dense and often difficult written works, which many readers have found challenging to get through.

New âoptical tornadoâ technology could transform quantum communication

Scientists have created tiny âoptical tornadoesâ â swirling beams of light that twist like miniature whirlwinds â using a surprisingly simple setup based on liquid crystals. Instead of relying on complex nanotechnology, the team used self-organizing structures called torons to trap and manipulate light, causing it to spiral and rotate in intricate ways. Even more impressively, they achieved this effect in lightâs most stable, lowest-energy state, making it far easier to generate laser-like beams with these unusual properties.
