Everyone is so concerned with how the war with Iran will end that few people have considered how it started.
Everyone is so concerned with how the war with Iran will end that few people have considered how it started. That consideration would reveal that the conflict has deep historical roots and that the United States and Israel have contributed to the crisis. Trouble with Iran began, not in 1979 when the Islamic Revolution installed a brutal theocratic regime, but 28 years earlier. In 1951, the democratically elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammed Mosaddegh, nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. At the instigation of the British, Shah Mohammed Riza Pahlavi tried to remove Mosaddegh, only to be driven from the country by his supporters. Mosaddegh threatened Western economic interests and raised concerns as to Iranâs reliability as an ally in the depths of the Cold War. The British decided he had to go, and they asked the U.S. for help. The CIA funded a movement to overthrow the Mosaddegh government. After returning to power, the shah ruled Iran with an iron fist, using torture and brutally suppressing opposition, the same behavior for which the Trump administration criticized Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But he was a dependable ally, so the U.S. overlooked his abuses, just as it did those of autocrats in Africa and Latin America. In 1979, a mass uprising led by Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini caused the shah to flee. Initially relieved by his overthrow, Iranians soon realized that they had jumped from the frying pan into the fire as the cleric and his successors presided over a theocratic state that oppressed women, LGBTQ people and anyone who opposed them. When President Carter allowed the ailing shah into the U.S. for treatment, his followers seized the embassy in Tehran, held its staff hostage for more than a year and created enmity lasting to the present. In retaliation, the Reagan administration supported Saddam Husseinâs war with Iran (1980-88), even though they knew he used poison gas, not only against the Iranians but also against Iraqi Kurds. In 1988, the USS Vincennes accidentally shot down an Iranian airbus, killing all 290 people on board during the tanker wars. The tragedy contributed further to the animosity between the two countries. Although Iranian nuclear experiments had begun in the 1970s, the war prompted the regime to pursue acquiring nuclear weapons. Objectionable though it is to the U.S. and Israel, Iranâs enrichment program made perfect sense to a regime that felt under siege. President Obama understood this reality when he entered into the 2015 nuclear agreement, which eased economic sanctions in return for limitations on Iranâs nuclear program. The deal was imperfect and controversial, but it allowed inspectors to monitor Iranian nuclear facilities and eased the suffering sanctions inflicted on the Iranian people. After taking office, President Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and pursued a more aggressive policy towards Iran. In 2020, he assassinated Iranian General Qassim Sulemani, and Iran restarted its nuclear enrichment program. President Biden resumed negotiations but they had not progressed far by the time he left office. Five months into his second term Trump launched B-2 strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming he had âobliteratedâ them. Less than a year later he launched another attack, insisting without evidence that Iran was âweeks awayâ from getting a nuclear weapon. The administration also accused Iran of being a state sponsor of terrorism. While this charge is true, it obscures a complex reality. Consider the case of Hezbollah. Hezbollah has certainly engaged in terrorism, but it is much more than an extremist organization. It is what some experts call a âstate within a state,â providing aid and social services to its supporters and contributing cabinet members to the Lebanese government. Iran supports but did not create the organization. Hezbollah formed in response to the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and has battled the Jewish state ever since, denying Israelâs right to exist. Since Oct. 7, Israel has severely degraded but not destroyed Hezbollahâs military capability, as evidenced by the groupâs missile attacks this month. The Israel Defense Forces is once again occupying part of southern Lebanon ostensibly to create a buffer zone as it did in 1982. That incursion did not go well. This historical survey makes three things abundantly clear. First, U.S. policy over the past 75 years led to the creation of the Islamic Republic of Iran and has perpetuated conflict with it. Second, the Iranian, Lebanese and Israel-Palestine conflicts are linked, so only a comprehensive peace plan can resolve them. And third, regime change does not work. The U.S. reinstated the shah and ended up with the ayatollah. Replacing Iranâs theocratic regime with a democratic one would benefit everyone, the Iranian people most of all, but a bombing campaign that kills innocent people, destroys infrastructure, and adds to the legacy of Iranian bitterness towards the U.S. cannot accomplish that. The date for accepting President Trumpâs âCompact for Academic Excellence in Higher Educationâ in return for funding has come and gone. Seven of the 10 institutions initially approached have rejected it. The compact demands that the schools end diversity, equity and inclusion programs in admissions and hiring and protect conservative students from alleged discrimination. It presumes that colleges and universities indoctrinate young people with radical leftist ideology, a belief that has become an article of MAGA faith. Trump has accused faculty of âturning our students into communists, terrorists and sympathizers of many, many dimensions.â That claim does not stand up to scrutiny. It gives young people no credit for being independent thinkers and ascribes to faculty a power of persuasion they do not have. The degree of choice among schools, majors and courses makes indoctrination impossible. Students can select from 4,360 diverse institutions of higher education, all of which provide ample information on their programs, faculty and student life. One website even classifies schools based on whether they are liberal or conservative. Since most faculty are liberals, the critics insist, it hardly matters what school a student attends. In a recent survey, 50 percent of faculty identified as liberal, 17 percent as moderate and 26 percent as conservative, but that does not mean that their political convictions guide their teaching. Most courses cannot be taught from an ideological perspective â left, right or center. Is there a âwokeâ way to teach chemistry, biology, physics, music or geology? There may be Marxist mathematicians, but there is no such thing as Marxist calculus. A 2023 survey identified the top 10 majors based on percentage of students: business, nursing, psychology, education, biology, criminal justice, computer science, health professions, accounting and engineering. Courses in most of these fields are highly technical and not amenable to ideological interpretation. Business, which attracts the most majors, has a higher percentage of conservative faculty than universities and colleges do in general. âWhat about the humanities and social sciences?â critics will ask. These fields do have the highest percentage of left-leaning faculty, but most teach their courses objectively I have required students in my Western Civilization course to read excerpts from âThe Wealth of Nationsâ and the âCommunist Manifesto.â That's not because I want to promote either one, but because both are essential to understanding 19th-century Europe. Determining political leaning from choice of major is extraordinarily difficult, but some evidence suggests liberal students are more likely to choose humanities or social sciences. Their beliefs influence their choice of major and selection of courses. The courses do not indoctrinate them. All students must take a broad range of liberal arts courses, but they have many options. My âWhite Supremacy in the United Statesâ class is not a required course, but it fills quickly because of student interest. Since departments offer multiple sections of required courses, students can pick their instructor. And most schools make course evaluations available, so finding out if a professor has an ideological bias is not difficult. If liberal indoctrination really did happen in colleges and universities, it should be evident in voting patterns. It is not. In the 2024 election, 49 percent of college-educated men voted for Kamala Harris, and 48 percent for Donald Trump (a virtual tie); 61 percent of college women voted for Harris and just 37 percent for Trump. However, most non-college educated women also favored Harris over Trump, 53 percent to 45 percent. If there is little evidence of indoctrination occurring in the classrooms, what about the campus environment? Supporters of the presidentâs crackdown insist that many schools do not make conservative students feel welcome. Some undergraduates perceive that they suffer âviewpoint discrimination,â the idea that their beliefs are not respected. Perception, however, does not always accurately reflect reality. A June 2024 survey revealed that only 44 percent of college students âfelt comfortable expressing their opinions without fear of negative consequences.â The data revealed that 54 percent of Democrats, 39 percent of Republicans, and 36 percent of âothersâ felt comfortable sharing their views. However, the same survey revealed that 64 percent of students believed everyone should be free to express themselves without fear of retribution, which suggests conservatives exaggerate fears of viewpoint discrimination. Campuses are more tolerant than students imagine. Fear does not equate to the presence of a real threat, but the critics of higher education have decided it does. They cite studentsâ subjective feelings of anxiety or even discomfort as objective evidence that a campus is âunwelcomingâ or even âunsafe.â As educators we must preserve a healthy learning environment that exposes students to diverse views without condemning them for the ones they already hold. Challenging their established beliefs, however, requires making them uncomfortable. The president said Sunday heâs asked âabout sevenâ countries to join with the U.S. in policing the waterway.
