White House officials on Friday lambasted CNN for a report that suggested the U.S. was caught off guard by Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to a surge in gas and oil prices globally. CNN reported that the Pentagon and the National Security Council underestimated Iran's willingness to close the strait, through which around 20 percent of the world's oil and gas passes. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the story "100% FAKE NEWS" and "garbage." "THE TRUTH: The Pentagon has been planning for Iranâs desperate and reckless closure of the Strait of Hormuz for DECADES, and it has been part of the Trump Administrationâs planning well before Operation Epic Fury was ever launched," Leavitt wrote in a lengthy post on the social platform X. "The idea that Chairman Cain and Secretary Hegseth werenât prepared for this possibility is PREPOSTEROUS," she continued, referring to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. "The President was fully briefed on it, and a goal of the Operation itself, to annihilate the terrorist Iranian regimeâs navy, missiles, drone production infrastructure, and other threat capabilities is quite literally intended to deprive them of their ability to close the Strait." She added that the reporting was a "complete disgrace" and the Trump administration "will keep fighting back against it." CNN later added a clarification to the story that reads: "This story has been updated to reflect additional developments and clarify that top Trump administration officials briefed lawmakers on long-standing military plans to address a major disruption to the Strait, according to one official, but that multiple sources familiar with the session said there was no indication there were any near-term solutions." Leavitt reacted to the clarification and called it "pathetic." "Still waiting on @ZcohenCNN to delete his completely inaccurate post," she wrote, referring to one of the story's co-authors, senior national security reporter Zachary Cohen. White House communications director Steven Cheung reacted to a post from the X account PatriotTakes asking if it is "normal for the military to be commenting on how news networks should be ran?" "Yes 100%," Cheung wrote in his post. "When Fake News outlets like CNN publishes verifiably false information, it is completely appropriate to comment on how shitty outlets are run." White House principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly also blasted the reporting. She reacted to CNN media analyst Brian Stelter sharing the outlet's statement that it supports the reporting. "No one cares, Brian," Kelly wrote on X. "This story was always wrong and we said so on the front end. CNN wrote anyway because theyâre more interested in pushing a dishonest narrative critical of the Administration than accurately reporting the facts." Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) also challenged the reporting, writing on X that the administration briefed him on the matter. "It is categorically false that they did not plan for Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz," Sheehy wrote. "Lawmakers and national security officials have known for years that this was Iranâs plan once their backs were against the wall." A CNN spokesperson told The Hill on Friday morning that the network stands by its reporting. Hegseth himself also blasted the story, labeling it "patently ridiculous, of course." He later followed his condemnation with a remark on Paramount Skydance, whose CEO is Trump ally David Ellison, purchasing CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. "CNN doesnât think we thought of that," the former Fox News host said. "It's a fundamentally unserious report. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better." Ellison has said CNN will maintain editorial independence if the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger is approved. He has, however, promised to retool CNN's editorial strategy to serve what he called a more politically "diverse" audience. Some have perceived this as a push for the network to move ideologically to the right. Updated at 1:23 p.m. EDT

Media's bias: A comparison to 'Baghdad Bob' era Added: Mar 14, 2026
**âBaghdad Bobâ had nothing on CNN and the far-left media of today **
Site: The Hill
Members of the mainstream media have every right to disagree with President Trump regarding Iran or any other subject. What they donât have the right to do is join the âresistanceâ against him whilâŚ
Alas, time marches on. I am old enough to remember the laugh-out-loud fairy tales spun by âBaghdad Bobâ during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. For those of you who are not regular students of American military history, âBaghdad Bobâ â real name Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf â was the spokesman and information minister for Saddam Hussein and his murderous regime. Also known as "Comical Ali," al-Sahhaf became famous for openly denying the obvious in ever more fanciful ways as Hussein's regime rapidly lost its war for survival. He kept up his on-camera insistence that American forces were being soundly defeated on the battlefield, almost to the exact moment U.S. tanks rolled up on his location. I was reminded of good old Bobâs many fantastical lies when I read a since-deleted post from CNN about the two ISIS-inspired domestic terrorists accused of throwing homemade bombs at protesters near Gracie Mansion in New York City. Bob also comes to mind when I read the various headlines from left-leaning news outlets regarding our military actions against Iran. If I didn't know better, I would say the outlets almost seem to be siding with Iran against the U.S. With regard to the self-radicalized extremists in New York, CNN posted this: âTwo Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what couldâve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather. But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside of Mayor Zohran Mamdaniâs home.â Gee, maybe Pollyanna is alive and well, employed at CNN. After massive outcry, the adult leadership at CNN deleted the post, offering this explanation: âA post regarding the two individuals arrested for throwing homemade bombs outside of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdaniâs home failed to reflect the gravity of the incident thereby breaching the editorial standards we require for all our reporting. It has therefore been deleted.â But then CNN decided to double down, giving our old friend âBaghdad Bobâ a run for his money. Later on the same day, after the egregious comment had been deleted, CNNâs Abby Phillip falsely stated that the attack had been against New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, not against those protesting him. I am guessing Phillip missed the admonishment not to push provably false nonsense. The adults at CNN then had to have her correct the record and apologize. Next, a tweet by famed Democratic strategist Mark Penn drew my attention to the headlines put out by many left-of-center news websites âessentially featuring Iranian propaganda as the news.â "'Iran Regime doing well, in control;â 'Trump under pressure to end war;' â[Khamenei] son just as tough as Fatherâ ... The press is a drumbeat of negativity favoring the Iran regime,â Penn wrote. Look, human nature is human nature, and all in the media are human. But it has become pretty clear that most of those in the mainstream media have a strong dislike or even hatred for our president, and most of them are letting those emotions cloud their judgment. As Democratic strategist Melissa DeRosa put it on Fox News this week, "Itâs almost as if the media covering this entire thing has devolved into parody.â But parody in this case is not just irresponsible, it could prove very dangerous. Members of the mainstream media have every right to disagree with President Trump regarding Iran or any other subject. But they have a responsibility not to join the âresistanceâ against him by feeding false information to the American public in a time of war. âBaghdad Bobâ was rightfully ridiculed in 2003, even though he was actually being paid to lie for the enemy. Unfortunately, 23 years later, in the age of hyper-partisanship and social media, we have âBaghdad Bobâ on steroids across the mainstream American media spectrum. Hate on Trump all you want, but donât spin or outright lie in the process. Humanity needs honest reporting now more than ever. Douglas MacKinnon is a former White House and Pentagon official.

The extreme male brain theory of autism applies more strongly to females
Added: Mar 14, 2026The extreme male brain theory of autism applies more strongly to females
Site: PsyPost - Psychology News
A comprehensive new study suggests that females require a much larger biological and cognitive shift to develop autism than males do. The findings help explain why the condition is diagnosed significantly more often in boys.
A recent study published in <em><a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aur.70198" target="_blank">Autism Research</a></em> suggests that the cognitive shifts associated with autism are significantly larger in females than in males. The findings provide evidence that females may need a greater biological push to develop autism, which helps explain why the condition is diagnosed much more frequently in boys. These insights clarify the psychological differences underlying the male-biased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder.
The extreme male brain theory of autism was originally proposed by psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen at the University of Cambridge. This theory suggests that autism represents an exaggeration of typical male cognitive traits. Specifically, it points to a profile of relatively low empathy, known as empathizing, and a high interest in analyzing or constructing rule-based structures, known as systemizing.
Empathizing involves the ability to recognize and respond to the feelings of others. Systemizing is the drive to understand non-social systems, such as mathematics, computer code, or mechanical devices. According to the extreme male brain theory, elevated exposure to testosterone in the womb tends to shift brain development toward this highly systemizing profile.
Historically, autism is diagnosed in about four males for every one female. Scientists Cory Szakal and Bernard Crespi at Simon Fraser University wanted to understand if the extreme male brain theory applies differently to males and females. They also wanted to explore whether females possess a biological resistance to the condition.
Some scientists suspect that a female protective effect exists. This concept suggests that females require a heavier load of genetic or environmental factors to reach the threshold for an autism diagnosis. If this protective effect is real, females diagnosed with autism should exhibit much more drastic cognitive shifts compared to their peers than males do.
"The main question was how to explain the male bias in autism. The main psychological theory on this question is Baron-Cohen's Empathizing-Systemizing theory. However, the differences in empathizing and systemizing between people with autism and neurotypicals had never been compared between females and males. We did so using systematic review and meta-analysis of all of the published work," explained Crespi, a professor of biological sciences.
A meta-analysis is a statistical technique that combines data from multiple independent studies to identify overall trends. The researchers gathered data from 34 previously published studies that measured empathizing and systemizing traits.
In total, the analysis included 1,234,560 participants, comprising 757,726 females and 476,834 males. The sample featured both autistic individuals and neurotypical people, meaning those whose brain development aligns with typical standards. The researchers looked at three specific self-report measures used across these studies.
These measures included the Empathy Quotient, the Systemizing Quotient, and the Autism Spectrum Quotient. The Empathy Quotient measures a person's social sensitivity, while the Systemizing Quotient gauges their interest in systems and rules. The Autism Spectrum Quotient evaluates the presence of autistic traits in everyday behavior.
Because the 34 studies used different versions of these questionnaires, the researchers standardized the scores. They divided the reported averages by the maximum possible score for each specific test. This conversion changed all scores into a percentage, making them easily comparable across the entire dataset.
The researchers found that the gap in empathy and systemizing scores between autistic and neurotypical females is significantly wider than the gap between autistic and neurotypical males. In other words, an autistic female shows a much larger departure from the average female cognitive profile than an autistic male does from the average male profile. This provides evidence that a larger cognitive shift is involved in a female developing autism.
The data also revealed that differences in empathy scores between autistic and neurotypical individuals are substantially larger than the differences in systemizing scores. On a proportional basis, the empathy shifts were three to five times larger than the systemizing shifts. This suggests that reduced empathy may play a larger role in the psychological differences that characterize an autism diagnosis.
Additionally, the normal sex differences seen in empathy and systemizing are highly reduced among autistic individuals. Autistic males and autistic females showed almost identical scores on the Systemizing Quotient. For the Empathy Quotient, the difference between autistic males and females was also very small, showing a blending of typical gender lines.
The researchers also examined how strongly these traits predict overall autistic behaviors. They found that changes in empathy and systemizing scores have a much stronger impact on overall autism scores in autistic individuals than in neurotypical ones. The data suggests that as empathy drops and systemizing rises, the outward signs of autism multiply much faster for those already on the spectrum.
The scientists also discovered an unexpected relationship between empathy and systemizing in autistic people. Among neurotypical participants, empathy and systemizing scores tend to rise together in a positive correlation. In contrast, autistic individuals showed an inverse relationship, where higher systemizing scores were linked to lower empathy scores.
This inverse relationship points to a cognitive trade-off in people with autism. A cognitive trade-off occurs when the enhancement of one mental ability interferes with another. For example, a hyper-focus on rule-based, non-social systems might naturally suppress the brain networks used for social and emotional processing.
As with all research, there are limitations to consider. The studies included in the analysis relied on self-reported questionnaires. Self-reporting can sometimes reflect how people wish to be seen or how they mask their traits to fit societal expectations, a behavior known as camouflaging.
Autistic females are known to camouflage their traits more frequently than autistic males, often out of a desire to conform to gender norms. They might use their intellect to mimic social behaviors, which could artificially inflate how they score on empathy tests. Also, the data gathered inconsistently reported participant ages, preventing the researchers from analyzing how these cognitive traits might change over a person's lifespan.
Another limitation is that a large portion of the data came from a small number of research groups. This clustering means that specific testing methods or regional biases might influence the overall results. The scientists recommend that future studies investigate the exact causes of the cognitive trade-offs seen between empathy and systemizing.
Future research should also explore how environmental and genetic factors interact to create these psychological shifts. Understanding these mechanisms could clarify why females appear to have a biological resistance to autism. It might also improve diagnostic tools to better identify autistic females who currently go unnoticed.
The study, "<a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aur.70198" target="_blank">Does the Extreme Male Brain Hypothesis of Autism Apply More to Females Than Males? A Systematic and Meta-Analytic Approach</a>," was authored by Cory Szakal and Bernard Crespi.
