Donald Trump threatens to veto all bills until SAVE Act passes Senate Added: Mar 8, 2026
Trump says he wonāt sign any bills into law until SAVE America Act passes
Site: The Hill

President Trump on Sunday threatened to not sign any bills into law until the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act is approved by the Senate, doubling down on his push to change voting requirements ahead of the midterm elections. āI, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION - GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY - ILLNESS, DISABILITY,ā the president wrote in his Sunday morning Truth Social post. The White House did not respond to a request for comment on whether the president will sign a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security amid the partial government shutdown. The leader has pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to use a talking filibuster to pass the bill, which was approved by the House in February. The filibuster would force Democrats to speak continuously on the Senate floor to delay a vote on the bill. But, if they cede the floor, Republicans could circumvent the need for a 60-vote majority and pass the measure with just 51 votes. On Sunday, Trump again urged Thune to use this tactic to get the bill across the finish line. āGreat Job by hard working Scott Pressler on Fox & Friends talking about using the Filibuster, or Talking Filibuster, in order to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, an 88% issue with ALL VOTERS,ā the president wrote, referring to the conservative activist. āIt must be done immediately. It supersedes everything else. MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE,ā he continued. Thune, who ran for Senate majority leader under the commitment to uphold the 60-vote threshold, has not budged on his stance despite Trump's pressure. The SAVE America Act has ample support from House Republicans and has already passed the lower chamber three separate times over the years. Democrats, however, have pushed back on the measure, claiming it would pose challenges for registered voters and potentially inhibit people from heading to the polls. The Hill has reached out to the White House as well as Thune's and House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) offices for comment. Updated at 12:55 p.m. EDT

SOTU moment: Trump challenges Democrats on immigration Added: Mar 8, 2026
They wouldnāt stand for Americans
Site: The Hill
During the State of the Union address, President Trump asked Congress to prioritize American citizens over illegal immigrants, resulting in a clear visual contrast between the two parties.
State of the Union addresses are built for spectacle. We all know that. Lawmakers rise and sit in carefully choreographed waves. Applauses are strategic, and disdain is usually muted. But this year, a moment broke through the pageantry. President Trump posed a direct question to Congress, telling them to stand up if they agree that "the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens." Republicans stood. Democrats did not. The question Trump posed was not a complex immigration proposal or a partisan trap buried in dense legal language. It was a statement of first principles. Governments exist to serve their citizens. That idea predates both party labels and modern culture wars. Vice President JD Vance afterward called this posing of the key question āone of the most profound momentsā of the night. It demonstrated a clear contrast between those who put American citizens first and those who prioritize ahead of them people residing in the country unlawfully. White House adviser Stephen Miller likewise argued that the exchange exposed a deep philosophical divide over whether the government's primary obligation is to its own citizens. Critics will dismiss the exchange as political theater. They will argue that standing on cue during a speech proves nothing about legislative intent. That is fair as far as it goes. But politics is not conducted in a vacuum. Symbols matter. Voters process what they see as much as what they read in policy briefs. And what they saw during Trump's speech was one party rise in unison to affirm that citizens come first, while the other remained seated. Democrats also declined to stand during calls to end sanctuary policies and during recognition of crime victims harmed by repeat offenders. Trump's supporters see a pattern of reluctance to align publicly with a citizen first framework on immigration and law enforcement. Democrats, for their part, would likely argue they reject the false binary between border enforcement and compassion. They contend that protecting American communities and treating migrants humanely are not mutually exclusive goals. That debate is both legitimate and necessary. Still, the presidentās question was perfectly straightforward outside that debate. Whom does government serve? For many Americans struggling with the effects of an overwhelmed border, strained local services, and rising public safety concerns, the answer feels obvious. They expect their elected officials to prioritize their security and wellbeing before extending benefits to people here unlawfully. When asked to stand for that principle, one party did, and the other did not. In an era of carefully crafted messaging and calculated ambiguity, the simplicity of that moment may prove politically enduring. It distilled the immigration debate into a single, visual contrast that requires no spin. Sometimes the most powerful statement in Washington is not what is said from the podium. It is who stands.
