āToo lateā for Iran to seek talks, says Trump amid escalating conflict - The Economic Times
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that it was ātoo lateā for Iran to seek negotiations, asserting that the West Asian countryās military leadership and key defence assets had been severely weakened in the ongoing conflict. In a post on Truth Social, the US president wrote, āTheir air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk. I said āToo Late!āāTrump was referring to a Washington Post opinion piece titled āWeāre witnessing the birth of the Trump Doctrine: Like Reagan, the president has found a way to change the world without putting boots on the ground.ā The remarks came as the conflict entered its fourth day following US and Israeli air strikes on Iran over the weekend. Doubling down on his stance, Trump said the United States had sufficient military stockpiles to sustain a prolonged campaign if required. Also Read | Trump's Asian allies fear Iran war will sap defences against ChinaIn a separate social media post overnight, he asserted that there was a āvirtually unlimited supplyā of American munitions and that wars could be fought āforever, and very successfully, using just these supplies.ā āThe United States is stocked, and ready to WIN, BIG!!!ā he added.Speaking briefly at the White House ahead of a Medal of Honor ceremony, his first public appearance since the latest escalation, Trump had said the military campaign was progressing faster than anticipated. While he did not provide specifics on the duration of the offensive, he noted that initial projections had suggested it could last four to five weeks.āWeāre already substantially ahead of our time projections. But whatever the time is, itās OK. Whatever it takes,ā he said.Fourth day: Conflict spreads across GulfAs the war entered its fourth day on Tuesday, the confrontation widened dramatically across the Gulf region, with fresh missile and drone strikes, diplomatic sites targeted and energy markets rattled.Iran called on the United Nations Security Council to intervene and halt hostilities. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the council had both the authority and responsibility to act if it chose to do so, as fighting intensified. The humanitarian toll also mounted. Also Read | US-Israel attack on Iran Day 4 updates: India opposes attacks on merchant shipping and moreThe Iranian Red Crescent said the death toll in Iran had climbed to 787 following sustained air strikes by US and Israeli forces. The United States urged its citizens to leave large parts of the Middle East, citing serious security risks. The advisory covered countries stretching from Egypt across the Gulf, including Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, even as airspace disruptions complicated commercial departures. One of the most consequential flashpoints emerged around the Strait of Hormuz. A senior adviser to Iranās Revolutionary Guards commander said the strategic waterway had been closed and warned that vessels attempting passage could be attacked. The narrow channel handles roughly a fifth of global oil consumption and is a critical route linking major Gulf producers to international markets. The threat sent oil prices higher amid fears of prolonged supply disruptions.Missile and drone attacks were reported across the region. Two drones struck the US embassy compound in Riyadh, causing minor damage and prompting āshelter in placeā advisories for American personnel. Gulf states including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates said they had intercepted incoming projectiles, while smoke was reported near diplomatic sites in Kuwait.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the offensive as urgent and pre-emptive, arguing that Iran was rapidly fortifying its nuclear and ballistic missile infrastructure. He described the campaign as decisive and not intended to become an endless war.Meanwhile, India voiced concern over the escalating conflict and opposed attacks on merchant shipping, while stating that domestic energy supplies remained sufficient to manage short-term disruptions. With both Washington and Tehran hardening their positions, the fourth day of fighting underscored how quickly a targeted strike had evolved into a multi-front regional crisis with global economic and security implications.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he can't speak for the Pentagon, but 'Anthropic seemed more focused on... - The Times of India

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has offered his most candid take yet on why his company managed to ink a deal with the Pentagon while rival Anthropic could notāsuggesting that Anthropic's insistence on tighter contractual controls may have been the breaking point. In an Ask Me Anything session on X on Saturday night, Altman responded to a user asking why the Department of War (DoW) went with OpenAI over Anthropic. While he said he couldn't speak for the Pentagon, he didn't hold back on his read of the situation.'I think Anthropic may have wanted more operational control than we did,' Altman wrote, adding that Anthropic appeared 'more focused on specific prohibitions in the contract, rather than citing applicable laws.' Sam Altman says both sides were close before things fell apartAltman noted that Anthropic and the Pentagon were reportedly very close to reaching an agreement before negotiations collapsed under pressure. 'I have seen what happens in tense negotiations when things get stressed and deteriorate super fast, and I could believe that was a large part of what happened here,' he said. The breakdown has had serious consequences. On Friday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared Anthropic a 'supply chain risk to national security,' effectively blacklisting the company from military contracts. President Trump went further, ordering all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's products and calling the company 'radical left' on Truth Social.Anthropic, for its part, has said it will challenge the designation in court and that no amount of 'intimidation' will shift its stance on mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weaponsāthe two red lines it refused to drop.OpenAI says its safety approach relies on tech, not just contract languageAltman drew a clear distinction between how the two companies approach safety in government deployments. OpenAI, he explained, favours a 'layered approach'āa safety stack it fully controls, cloud-only deployment, cleared forward-deployed engineers, and alignment researchers in the loop.'Although documents are also important, I'd clearly rather rely on technical safeguards if I only had to pick one,' Altman wrote.OpenAI's contract with the Pentagon prohibits the use of its technology for 'unconstrained monitoring' of Americans' private information and bars it from independently directing autonomous weapons. The company also added a third red line that Anthropic did not publicly emphasise: no automated high-stakes decision-making, such as social credit-style systems. The deal was rushed, and Altman knows the optics aren't greatAltman was remarkably upfront about the speed at which the deal came together, calling it 'rushed' and acknowledging that the 'optics don't look good.' He said the agreement was partly motivated by a desire to de-escalate tensions between the Pentagon and the broader AI industry. As part of the deal, OpenAI says it pushed for similar terms to be offered to all AI labsāincluding Anthropic. The company also publicly stated that Anthropic should not be designated a supply chain risk.128776771Whether that call for de-escalation lands remains to be seen. For now, the AI industry's two biggest safety-focused labs find themselves on opposite sides of one of the most consequential government contracts in tech history.

Europe's answer to Starship Added: Mar 3, 2026
Europe's answer to Starship
In the summer of 2023, something happened that engineers had talked about for decades but few genuinely expected to see in their lifetimes. SpaceX's Starship, a stainless steel tower taller than a 30-story building, lit its 33 engines simultaneously and lifted off from the Texas coast. It did not go entirely to plan. But it went. And when the Super Heavy booster returned in flight test five to be caught, midair, by the enormous mechanical arms of its own launch tower, it was clear that the rules of spaceflight had fundamentally changed.
