Quote of the day by writing legend William Shakespeare: 'The fool does think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool' - The Economic Times Added: Feb 11, 2026
Quote of the day by writing legend William Shakespeare: 'The fool does think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool' - The Economic Times
Some lines from literature stay alive because they sound polished. Others survive because they quietly describe how people actually behave. One such line comes from William Shakespeare, a writer whose observations on human nature continue to feel familiar even hundreds of years later. This particular quote, often shared as a daily reflection, speaks about confidence, self-knowledge, and the difference between appearing smart and actually being wise.âThe fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.â â William Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act 5, Scene 1At a basic level, the quote points to a simple contrast. A foolish person believes they already know enough and rarely questions their own thinking. This confidence is often loud and unexamined. The wise person, however, understands that knowledge has limits. Instead of claiming certainty, they remain aware of what they do not know.Shakespeare is not suggesting that wise people are ignorant or unsure all the time. Rather, he highlights self-awareness as the key difference. Wisdom comes from recognising gaps in understanding. That recognition keeps a person open to learning, correction, and growth. Foolishness, in contrast, grows when someone mistakes certainty for intelligence.128106675 Why the Idea Is Relevant After CenturiesThis thought continues to resonate because it plays out daily. In workplaces, debates, and online spaces, those who speak with the most confidence are not always the most informed. Meanwhile, people with deeper understanding often hesitate, ask questions, or admit uncertainty. The quote captures this pattern without moral preaching or complexity. There is also a quiet warning embedded in the line. When someone believes they are already wise, they stop listening. When someone accepts that they might be wrong, they continue learning. Over time, that difference shapes judgment, relationships, and decisions.128066371 The Irony Behind Who Says the LineThe quote is spoken by Touchstone, the court fool in As You Like It. This choice is deliberate. In many of Shakespeareâs plays, fools and jesters are not truly foolish. They observe society from the edges and often speak the most honest truths. Touchstoneâs role allows him to mock pride and false wisdom while appearing harmless. This irony strengthens the message. A character labeled a fool exposes the weakness of those who think too highly of themselves. Shakespeare repeatedly used such figures to question social status and assumed intelligence.Written around 1599, As You Like It is a pastoral comedy that contrasts the restrictive life of the court with the freedom of the Forest of Arden. Themes of identity, disguise, and self-discovery run throughout the play. Touchstoneâs line fits naturally into a story that challenges appearances and questions who truly understands themselves.First performed in the early 1600s, As You Like It remains one of William Shakespeareâs most studied comedies, blending romance, wit, and sharp observations about human behaviour. The play explores themes of identity, love, power, and self-discovery, many of which continue to resonate with modern audiences. Lines from the drama are still widely quoted today, not only in academic discussions but also across social media, where readers often revisit Shakespeareâs words for insights that feel surprisingly relevant centuries after they were written.William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon and remains one of the most influential writers in the English language. According to the Poetry Foundation, although his reputation rests largely on his plays, he first gained recognition as a poet. Across his works, Shakespeare consistently explored pride, ambition, insecurity, and self-deception.

Euro-censorship is starting to squeeze Americansâ freedom of speech Added: Feb 11, 2026
Euro-censorship is starting to squeeze Americansâ freedom of speech
Site: The Hill
Europeâs power play to wield effective editorial control over the entire internet will affect even what American citizens can say and see.
If youâre like most Americans, your idea of global censorship is that itâs bad, but it doesnât feel like a real threat to you. The fact that 30 British subjects are arrested every day for speech crimes sounds dire but distant. The ongoing crusade to arrest and prosecute U.K. grandmothers and clergy members for tweets and peaceful protests is infuriating, but it is also far from our shores. The same goes for Päivi Räsänen. A medical doctor, grandmother of 12, and member of the Finnish parliament, Räsänen is now awaiting a verdict at her nationâs high court that stems from a 2019 Twitter post that cited a Bible verse. This is yet another example which, while deeply troubling, sounds like itâs somebody elseâs problem to deal with. Unfortunately, the U.S. House of Representatives' House Judiciary Committee has made clear in its recent findings, this form of crushing online censorship isnât just headed to the U.S. Itâs already here. Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has released subpoenaed evidence that European Union leaders have been pressuring American Big Tech platforms such as Google, Meta, TikTok, Twitter, and LinkedIn to censor content â including content they knew to be factually true â since at least 2015. Over the last decade, the evidence shows E.U. commissioners effectively commandeering American tech companies as tools of censorship by strong-arming them to silence and punish users around the world. By 2020, unelected bureaucrats in Brussels enjoyed a firm grip on virtually every social media platform on the Internet. The COVID-19 pandemic and concurrent social justice unrest became the ultimate test of narrative control over users worldwide â not just in the U.K. or the E.U., but also stateside. Between 2022 â when Elon Musk purchased Twitter and converted it to X â and 2024, the E.U. Commission met more than 90 times with tech companies. The goal was obvious: to pressure the companies into adopting draconian and easily weaponizable speech restrictions styled as âcommunity guidelines.â The underlying aim was to censor speech and speakers that challenged the commissionâs preferred narratives. Muskâs purchase of X threw a massive wrench into Brusselsâ censorship apparatus, as did his defiance of now-disgraced E.U. Commissioner Thierry Bretonâs demand that he censor his own exchange with President Trump. Little wonder, then, that the E.U. Commissionâs first exercise of its censorship authority under its so-called Digital Services Act came in the form of a $140 million fine against X in December. To reinforce that it means business, the Commission also launched a new investigation last month into Muskâs platform while expanding an existing probe that had begun in late 2023. The E.U. Commissionâs retributive fines and selective investigations of X are chilling. So is its longstanding power play to wield effective editorial control over the entire internet, including over what American citizens can say and see. Jordanâs Committee held a hearing just 24 hours after publishing its findings, focusing on the threat that European law poses to Americansâ freedom of speech. Irish comedian Graham Linehan shared his experience of being caught in the gears of the global censorship machinery over an X post he had made while in Arizona. Räsänen recalled her initial shock at being interrogated and later prosecuted three times under a Finnish war crimes law, all for peaceably expressing views online and quoting scripture to support them. âIncreasingly, the fight for free speech is focused online, and we are seeing that censorship measures adopted in Europe do not remain confined to Europe,â Räsänen said. âThis should concern every person that values freedom.â Räsänen is right. The Digital Services Act and its sister legislation in the U.K. the Online Safety Act, exports to the U.S. the very same draconian speech codes that Finland has used to punish Räsänen. And because it is all online and carried out by non-government actors at Big Tech companies, the Digital Services Act bypasses the First Amendmentâs protections, leaving American citizens every bit as vulnerable to censorship as our European cousins. Thankfully, Jordan is bringing this issue to light for the American public. So are administration officials like Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, who have all spoken out and taken decisive action to defend free speech for all Americans. We are long past the point where censorship is someone elseâs problem. Europe has built itself the infrastructure to impose global speech controls, and the Europeans don't plan to exempt Americans. Jeremy Tedesco is senior counsel and senior vice president of corporate engagement at Alliance Defending Freedom.

Gallup to stop tracking presidential approval ratings after 8 decades Added: Feb 11, 2026

Gallup will no longer track presidential approval ratings after more than eight decades doing so, the public opinion polling agency confirmed to The Hill on Wednesday. The company said starting this year it would stop publishing approval and favorability ratings of individual political figures, saying in a statement it "reflects an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research and thought leadership." "Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape peopleâs lives," a spokesperson for the agency said. "That work will continue through the Gallup Poll Social Series, the Gallup Quarterly Business Review, the World Poll, and our portfolio of U.S. and global research." The news was first reported by The Washington Post. The Gallup Presidential Approval Rating has for decades been the among the top barometers cited by media outlets measuring public opinion of the president's performance. President Trump has seen his rating by the agency slip in recent months, peaking at 47 percent last February and dipping to less than 37 percent in its last poll taken in December. "This change is part of a broader, ongoing effort to align all of Gallupâs public work with its mission," a spokesperson for Gallup said. "We look forward to continuing to offer independent research that adheres to the highest standards of social science." When asked by The Hill if Gallup had received any feedback from the White House or anyone in the current administration before making the decision, the spokesperson said, "this is a strategic shift solely based on Gallupâs research goals and priorities." Trump's Gallup approval rating as of last December was among the lowest the organization had found since it began taking the poll in the 1930s. Former President Truman earned an average approval rating of 45 percent during his time in office from April 1945 to January 1953; former President Biden earned an average approval rating of 42 percent from January 2021 to January 2025. Former President Kennedy experienced some of the highest average ratings Gallup has ever recorded, 71 percent from January 1961 to November 1963, and former President Eisenhower topped out at an average of 61 percent from January 1953 to January 1961. Over the years, Gallup's polling business has grown to include surveys outside of partisan politics, asking about subjects such as employee workplace engagement, public views on the spread of AI and other global indicators of public trust and happiness with major institutions. Elon Musk-owned space company SpaceX is shifting its near-term focus away from Mars to prioritise building a self-sustaining city on the Moon. The update was shared by the tech billionaire in an X post citing faster timelines and easier launch opportunities. Sharing the post, Elon Musk said that a Moon city could be achieved in less than 10 years, while building a city on Mars would take more than two decades. While the Moon is now the top priority, Musk said SpaceX has not abandoned its Mars plans. âThe mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars,â Musk wrote on X.When asked by a user to clarify rumours of SpaceX deprioritizing Mars mission, the tech billionaire replied saying âMoon firstâ.Musk was responding to a post by Teslanomics that read:âElon, thereâs a lot of people saying SpaceX is deprioritizing Mars this Earth-Mars launch window and focusing on the moon instead. I donât really trust this, unless I hear it from the source. Can you shed some insight on what the plan is? Thanks!âWhat Elon Musk said about SpaceX deprioritizing Mars missionIn an X post, Elon Musk wrote:'For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years. The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars. It is only possible to travel to Mars when the planets align every 26 months (six month trip time), whereas we can launch to the Moon every 10 days (2 day trip time). This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city. That said, SpaceX will also strive to build a Mars city and begin doing so in about 5 to 7 years, but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster.' 128016187 When Elon Musk proposed name for Mars' first cityElon Musk has long talked about his plans to build a city on the red planet. So much so that he once proposed name for the first Martian city. âElon Musk says the first city on Mars will be named âTerminusâ,â an April 2025 post said on X.Replying to the post, Musk not only confirmed the name but also provided information on why he chose it, saying that it will ultimately depend on the residents of Mars to name their city.âItâs from Asimovâs Foundation. But Iâm open to other ideas,â Musk said. âUltimately, it will be up to the people of Mars to decide,â he added.
