Quote of the day by Socrates: 'By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, youâll become happy; if you get a bad one, youâll become a philosopher.' - The Economic Times
Valentine's Day is around the corner. Love is in the air, hearts are beating a little faster, and courage is quietly gathering in unexpected places. For those who have been waiting for the perfect moment to finally confess their feelings, this might just be it. And if youâre searching for the right words to express what your heart has been holding onto, here is a gem of a quote from the great Greek philosopher Socrates to inspire you.Socrates' Quote and its Meaning Few quotes from antiquity feel as surprisingly modern as this wry observation attributed to Socrates. With a single sentence, the legendary Greek thinker blends humour, realism, and philosophical depthâqualities that define much of his enduring legacy. At first glance, the quote reads like a joke about marriage. But beneath the wit lies a sharp insight into human relationships, personal growth, and the origins of philosophical reflection.Socrates, who lived in Athens around 470â399 BC, is widely regarded as one of the greatest philosophers in history and is often called the first moral philosopher of the Western tradition. Unlike many thinkers who followed him, Socrates wrote nothing down. What we know of his ideas comes mainly from the writings of his students and contemporaries, especially Plato and Xenophon. Through their works, Socrates appears as a relentless questionerâsomeone who believed that wisdom begins with recognising oneâs own ignorance. The famous quote on marriage captures this spirit perfectly. On one level, Socrates suggests that marriage is unavoidable and transformative. A happy marriage, he implies, brings contentment and emotional fulfilment. But a difficult one, instead of simply leading to misery, can push a person inwardâtowards reflection, questioning, and ultimately philosophy. In other words, hardship becomes a teacher. Suffering sharpens the mind, encourages self-examination, and forces individuals to search for meaning beyond comfort. This idea aligns closely with Socratic philosophy itself. Socrates believed that an unexamined life was not worth living. Challengesâwhether social, emotional, or personalâwere opportunities to examine beliefs, values, and assumptions. A âbadâ marriage, in this sense, becomes a metaphor for lifeâs inevitable struggles, which often provoke the deepest thinking and self-awareness.More about Socrates Socrates was also a deeply controversial figure in Athenian society. His habit of questioning authority, tradition, and popular opinion earned him both devoted followers and powerful enemies. In 399 BC, he was charged with impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. After a brief trial, he was sentenced to death. Refusing chances to escape, Socrates accepted his fate and died by drinking poison, as famously recounted by Platoâremaining true to his principles until the end. Centuries later, this quote continues to resonate because it speaks to a universal truth: joy may make life pleasant, but adversity often makes it meaningful. Whether through happiness or hardship, Socrates reminds us, life has a way of turning us into philosophersâif we are willing to think.

Quote of the day by music icon Frank Sinatra: 'If you possess something that you can't give away, then you don't possess it, it possesses you' - The Economic Times Added: Feb 9, 2026
Quote of the day by music icon Frank Sinatra: 'If you possess something that you can't give away, then you don't possess it, it possesses you' - The Economic Times
The piece highlights a quote attributed to Frank Sinatra that questions the meaning of ownership, suggesting that anything that controls a person ultimately owns them. It links this idea to themes of freedom, fear, and generosity, and shows how the sentiment matched Sinatras life, career choices, and acts of charity rather than remaining just a memorable line.
Frank Sinatra is remembered for many things â the voice, the swagger, the long career that crossed music, film, and public life. But every now and then, a short line linked to him still cuts through decades of fame and noise. One such quote often credited to Sinatra reads: âIf you possess something but you can't give it away, then you don't possess it ... it possesses you.â It is a line that continues to circulate because it sounds simple, but it sits heavy once you stop and think about it.At its core, the quote talks about control. Sinatraâs words suggest that ownership is not just about having something, but about being free from it. If a person holds on so tightly to money, status, or even objects that the idea of giving them away feels impossible, then those things begin to run their life. In that situation, the person is no longer in charge. The thing they own becomes the boss. There is also a quieter meaning here about fear. When someone cannot let go, it often comes from fear of losing security, respect, or identity. Sinatraâs line pushes back against that fear. It says that real possession comes with freedom, not anxiety. If something causes stress at the thought of parting with it, then it has crossed a line from being useful to being a burden. The Story Behind the WordsThe quote is often linked to a moment shared by comedian Tom Dreesen, who recalled Sinatra giving away a pair of cufflinks worth around $2,000 to a fan. When asked about it, Sinatra reportedly explained his thinking with this exact line. The story has been repeated over the years because it fits his public image â a man who enjoyed success but was also known for generosity. While Sinatra lived large, he also believed money and things were meant to move, not sit and trap people emotionally. 127934364Sinatraâs Life and ValuesBorn Francis Albert Sinatra on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey, Sinatra grew up in a working-class environment. According to the Grammy Awards website, he went on to release his first solo album in 1946, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, which reached No. 1 and set the tone for his long recording career. Over the years, he earned multiple honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy in 1966, a Trustees Award in 1979, and a Grammy Legend Award in 1995. Thirteen of his works are part of the Grammy Hall of Fame. 127932447Beyond music, Sinatra was active in social causes. He performed at a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall in 1961 for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and raised millions for Jewish causes, earning Israelâs Medallion of Valor in 1972 for his fundraising efforts. These actions give added weight to the quote, showing that it was not just talk.Frank Sinatraâs career also stretched far beyond recording studios and concert halls. Alongside music, he built a long and often risk-filled career in films, earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for From Here to Eternity in 1953 after a period when many believed his career was fading. Known in the industry as âOne-Take Charlieâ for preferring instinct over perfection, Sinatra delivered some of his strongest performances in films like The Man with the Golden Arm, The Manchurian Candidate, and Guys and Dolls.128106675Even as trends changed and his popularity rose and fell, he continued working across decades, producing films, acting on television, and returning to the screen in later years, a persistence that mirrored the resilience he showed throughout his life until his death in 1998.

Elon Musk's robust donations may aid GOP in 2026 midterms Added: Feb 9, 2026
Musk jumps back into political fray with big midterm donations

Billionaire Elon Musk is back in the political fray, giving Republicans a boost in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections. The Tesla CEO had injected hundreds of millions into the 2024 election but announced plans last spring to step back from political spending, a potential blow for the GOP ahead of the high-stakes midterms. Less than a year later, Musk had already given $20 million to two top Republican groups by the end of 2025, according to federal filings, and dropped $10 million into the Kentucky Senate race last month â signaling the tech mogul could again play a pivotal role in the fight for Congress this fall. âMusk as a donor is important [because] money in politics is important, but Musk himself is a politically polarizing figure,â said Cayce Myers, a Virginia Tech public relations professor who has focused on political campaigns. âAs his money is needed, the fact that he is involved does create a complicated political situation for Republicans.â Musk, who is the worldâs richest person, spent at least $250 million boosting President Trumpâs 2024 campaign, making him by far the top donor of the cycle. Following Trumpâs election win, the tech billionaire cemented himself in the presidentâs inner circle and secured a wide-ranging role in the new administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, the cost-cutting initiative proved highly controversial, as DOGE sought to slash large swaths of government funding and make steep cuts to the federal workforce. Musk's political influence was also tested in a key race for an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court last April. Despite spending $12 million to support the conservative candidate via his super PAC, America PAC, the liberal candidate ultimately won. âHe was very visible, very all over the place, in the last 30 days of the election,â said Wisconsin independent analyst Brandon Scholz, pointing to Musk's plans for $1 million giveaways ahead of that race. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Democrats worked to capitalize on voters' frustration with Musk and DOGE, leading âa lot of peopleâ in the GOP to blame the billionaire for the loss, Scholz said. By May, the Tesla CEO indicated he was pulling back on political spending. âIn terms of political spending, Iâm going to do a lot less in the future,â he said at the time. "If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I do not currently see a reason.â Shortly after, he also departed the White House and became embroiled in a public spat with Trump while threatening to launch a third party. âThere was a real speculation that this rift was permanent, and in fact, it would upend Trump and the Republican momentum,â Myers said of the falling-out. However, in late June, Musk gave $5 million each to super PAC tied to House and Senate Republican leadership, as well as $5 million to Trumpâs super PAC, MAGA Inc., according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. Up through December, the tech mogul maintained a relatively low profile in the political sphere. He made an appearance at a White House dinner during the state visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in November. In mid-December, Musk contributed another $5 million each to the two Republican super PACs. And this month, he gave $10 million to a super PAC supporting Nate Morris, who is running to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), a source familiar with the matter shared with The Hill. The donations brought the Senate Leadership Fund to $100 million cash on hand at the end of the year, and the House leadership PAC to $54 million. Muskâs donation to the pro-Morris PAC is more than seven times the amount of cash on hand the campaign had in December. "It's a big deal for Trump and for the Republicans to have the world's richest man on their side,â said Republican strategist Brian Seitchik, who was Arizona state director for Trumpâs 2016 campaign. âIt certainly feels like the president and Elon Musk are back in a good place. For Republicans running around the country, I hope that holds as long as possible.â Seitchik shrugged off the rebuke Musk faced in the Wisconsin state Supreme Court race last year as an off-year blip, arguing that âthe upside is greater than the potential downside.â Musk pumped roughly $2.9 million into his America PAC in the final six months of the year, contributing a total of $48 million in 2025, according to filings. The super PAC ended 2025 with more than $50 million spent and just $275,107 cash on hand. âItâs no surprise to me that someone like Elon Musk sees a fracturing Republican Party and cannot resist reengaging and trying to make that party his own,â argued Joe Zepecki, a Wisconsin-based Democratic strategist. Democrats are coasting off a series of off-year election wins, optimistic about their chances of netting the three seats they need to flip the House in November, with the Senate considered increasingly in play amid poor approval numbers for Trump and frustration with Republicansâ immigration crackdown. Zepecki acknowledged the power of big donations but contended Muskâs involvement could become a âtremendous riskâ for the GOP in select races if Democrats can capitalize on frustrations like they did in the Badger State last year. The GOPâs House campaign arm ended the year with $45 million in cash on hand, neck and neck with its Democratic counterpartâs $46 million. The Senate Democratic campaign arm ended 2025 with $19 million to the GOP armâs $17 million. And while the Democratic National Committee lost money in 2025, ending the year with $12 million in the bank, the Republican National Committee surged to nearly $90 million. Republicans hope Muskâs weight helps tip the scales in November. However, the tech billionaire, ever a beacon for controversy, is once again in hot water. Muskâs social platform X has faced backlash from regulators around the world over the past month, as his AI chatbot Grok produced thousands of sexualized images of women and children in response to user requests. While X ultimately placed restrictions on image editing and generation tools, the platform still faces several investigations. The companyâs French offices were raided Tuesday as part of a probe launched by Parisian prosecutors last year that has since been expanded to cover Grok. X has dismissed the allegations underlying the probe as âbaseless.â Musk has also been caught up in the latest tranche of documents released by the Justice Department related to Jeffrey Epstein. In several email exchanges between 2012 and 2014, the tech billionaire appeared to be planning trips to the disgraced financierâs island. However, Musk said in a post on X that he did not attend Epsteinâs parties, travel on his plane or visit his island. This comes amid a consequential year for the tech mogul, as SpaceX is widely expected to go public. After merging with xAI this week, the spacecraft and satellite communications company is now valued at an estimated $1.25 trillion. âEspecially after DOGE and his reputation, his political salience is probably becoming less positive than it was. But I'm not sure that just giving money necessarily is going to hurt the Republican cause or a particular candidate,â said Michael Kang, a Northwestern University law professor and campaign finance expert. âI would bet most of the Republican interests are happy to have the money, and maybe a little bit more ambivalent about his heavy and very public involvement.â

How weak are Republicans for the midterms? Likely less than you think. Added: Feb 9, 2026
How weak are Republicans for the midterms? Likely less than you think.
Site: The Hill
The chances for a blue wave may not be as strong as assumed.
Between historical precedent and his own weak poll numbers, there are a number of reasons President Trump should expect Republicans to lose control over the House of Representatives this fall. Indeed, of the 20 midterms since 1946, the presidentâs party lost House seats in 18. Moreover, since President Harry Truman, when the presidentâs approval rating is under 50 percent â President Trumpâs currently sits at 43 percent â his party has lost House seats every time. Given Republicansâ razor thin majority in the House, any net-loss of seats would flip control. That said, predictions of a 2018-style Democratic landslide, in which they won 41 House seats are probably too optimistic. This is not to paint an overly rosy picture for the Republicans. Midterms tend to be a referendum on the sitting president, and Trump is generally unpopular. Still, the chances for a blue wave may not be as strong as assumed. First, as low as Trumpâs numbers are, Democrats' party favorability sits at just 33 percent, 9 points lower than Republicansâ and 10 points lower than Trumpâs favorability, according to the Marquette Law School poll. Second, as we have previously noted, the electoral battlefield has shifted considerably over the last eight years. There are far fewer competitive districts now, and recent redistricting in a handful of states will have an unknown impact that may potentially benefit the Republicans on net. To quantify the decline in competitive districts, in 2018, âabout three-quarters of the seats Democrats flipped were in the competitive zone,â meaning Trump had carried them by less than 5 points in the prior election. Today, only 14 Republican-held seats meet that criteria. According to Cook Political Report, the changes are even more stark. In 2018, they identified 75 competitive races. Ahead of this yearâs midterms, only 18 races are considered toss-ups. It isnât just the electoral map. Trumpâs weak polling would typically suggest that Democrats should win big â which could still happen â but generic congressional polling has not blown out in Democratsâ favor the way it would be expected to if a landslide was imminent. Currently, Democrats have a 4-point advantage according to Economist-YouGov polling, essentially a tie, given the 3-point margin of error. It is likely that Democratsâ own weaknesses â including their lack of a real agenda beyond being âanti-Trumpâ â have kept the generic congressional polling relatively close. For now, Democrats seem content riding the growing blowback to the administrationâs heavy-handed immigration crackdown and lingering affordability concerns, but Trump is taking steps to try and limit the damage to Republicans. In recent days, Trump announced a reduction in the number of ICE agents deployed in Minneapolis. Then, in an interview with NBC News, the president admitted that âa softer touchâ on immigration may be needed, including only deploying ICE if invited by state or local officials. The administration is also hoping that benefits from the so-called âBig, Beautiful Billâ will filter through the economy ahead of midterms. Finally, despite sagging poll numbers, Trumpâs fundraising remains robust. According to Politico, he and associated PACs raised $34 million in the second half of 2025, while another related PAC has $300 million on hand. With that in mind, Democrats should still be optimistic about taking back the House, even short of a landslide. On handling the economy â by far the most important issue â Trump is 15 points underwater (41 percent approve vs. 56 percent disapprove) per RealClearPoliticsâ average. Further, Democratic voters are considerably more excited to vote, holding a 12-point lead among those âextremely enthusiasticâ about voting, per The Big Data poll. Similarly, Fox News polling revealed that among those âextremelyâ or âveryâ motivated to vote, Democrats have a 6-point advantage. Democratsâ motivation advantage was on display last week in Texas, where a Democrat won a state Senate seat by 14 points in a district that Trump had carried by 17 points. That swing was surely exaggerated by low turnout, yet it serves as a harbinger heading into midterms. In that same vein, key demographics that shifted towards Trump in 2024 have begun souring on the president, potentially lowering support for Republican congressional candidates. CBS polling shows that among Hispanics, Trumpâs approval has fallen from 49 to 38 percent amid concerns over heavy-handed immigration crackdowns. Likewise, political moderates and independents are turning against the Republicans. By 22 and 16 points, respectively, those two critical groups say theyâd back the Democratic candidate over the Republican, according to the Marquette Law School poll. Among independents overall, just 30 percent approve of Trumpâs job performance, whereas 64 percent disapprove, according to NPR/PBS/Marist polling. Critically, the full extent of Trumpâs backtracking and âsofter toneâ on immigration remains to be seen, and the White House will certainly make an affordability push closer to November. At the end of the day Republicans are fighting an uphill battle to retain control of the House. Even so, the situation they find themselves in is not nearly as shaky as it was at this point in 2018 â nor is Democratsâ position as strong as it was then. Douglas E. Schoen and Carly Cooperman are pollsters and partners with the public opinion company Schoen Cooperman Research based in New York. They are co-authors of the book, âAmerica: Unite or Die.â

Building blocks of life discovered in Bennu asteroid rewrite origin story
Amino acids, the building blocks necessary for life, were previously found in samples of 4.6-billion-year-old rocks from an asteroid called Bennu, delivered to Earth in 2023 by NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission. How those amino acidsâthe molecules that create proteins and peptides in DNAâformed in space was a mystery, but new research led by Penn State scientists shows they could have originated in an icy-cold, radioactive environment at the dawn of Earth's solar system.

In a 2022 readers' poll conducted by Empire, he was named one of the 50 greatest actors of all time.Freeman has often spoken about the importance of challenging oneself, famously saying, âIf you live a life of make-believe, your life isn't worth anything until you do something that does challenge your reality. And to me, sailing the open ocean is a real challenge, because it's life or death.âThe quote captures a powerful truth: real growth happens when we step out of our comfort zone and confront situations that push our limits. Living in a world of fantasies or safety zones may feel secure, but it doesnât test who we truly are. Freemanâs perspective reminds us that the moments that challenge our realityâwhether big or smallâshape our character, teach resilience, and give life depth and meaning.128100827 Morgan Freeman's careerBorn in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Mississippi, Morgan Freeman discovered his love for acting through school plays.
