Chemistry isn't always essential for order: How simple geometry gives rise to complex materials
Utrecht University researchers Rodolfo Subert and Marjolein Dijkstra show in their latest study that complex three-dimensional networks in materials can emerge from nothing more than particle shape. In Nature Communications they describe how simple geometries, aided by entropy, can give rise to layers, networks and even spontaneous left- and right-handed twisting, which is a phenomenon previously linked mainly to highly complex molecules.

Scientists discover 'levitating' time crystals that you can hold in your hand
Time crystals, a collection of particles that "tick"—or move back and forth in repeating cycles—were first theorized and then discovered about a decade ago. While scientists have yet to create commercial or industrial applications for this intriguing form of matter, these crystals hold great promise for advancing quantum computing and data storage, among other uses.

The 'Little red dots' observed by Webb were direct-collapse black holes
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was designed to look back in time and study galaxies that existed shortly after the Big Bang. In so doing, scientists hoped to gain a better understanding of how the universe has evolved from the earliest cosmological epoch to the present. When Webb first trained its advanced optics and instruments on the early universe, it discovered a new class of astrophysical objects: bright red sources that were dubbed "Little Red Dots" (LRDs). Initially, astronomers hypothesized that they could be massive star-forming regions, but this was inconsistent with established cosmological models.

Musk jumps back into political fray with big midterm donations

Billionaire Elon Musk is back in the political fray, giving Republicans a boost in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections. The Tesla CEO had injected hundreds of millions into the 2024 election but announced plans last spring to step back from political spending, a potential blow for the GOP ahead of the high-stakes midterms. Less than a year later, Musk had already given $20 million to two top Republican groups by the end of 2025, according to federal filings, and dropped $10 million into the Kentucky Senate race last month — signaling the tech mogul could again play a pivotal role in the fight for Congress this fall. “Musk as a donor is important [because] money in politics is important, but Musk himself is a politically polarizing figure,” said Cayce Myers, a Virginia Tech public relations professor who has focused on political campaigns. “As his money is needed, the fact that he is involved does create a complicated political situation for Republicans.” Musk, who is the world’s richest person, spent at least $250 million boosting President Trump’s 2024 campaign, making him by far the top donor of the cycle. Following Trump’s election win, the tech billionaire cemented himself in the president’s inner circle and secured a wide-ranging role in the new administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, the cost-cutting initiative proved highly controversial, as DOGE sought to slash large swaths of government funding and make steep cuts to the federal workforce. Musk's political influence was also tested in a key race for an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court last April. Despite spending $12 million to support the conservative candidate via his super PAC, America PAC, the liberal candidate ultimately won. “He was very visible, very all over the place, in the last 30 days of the election,” said Wisconsin independent analyst Brandon Scholz, pointing to Musk's plans for $1 million giveaways ahead of that race. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Democrats worked to capitalize on voters' frustration with Musk and DOGE, leading “a lot of people” in the GOP to blame the billionaire for the loss, Scholz said. By May, the Tesla CEO indicated he was pulling back on political spending. “In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” he said at the time. "If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I do not currently see a reason.” Shortly after, he also departed the White House and became embroiled in a public spat with Trump while threatening to launch a third party. “There was a real speculation that this rift was permanent, and in fact, it would upend Trump and the Republican momentum,” Myers said of the falling-out. However, in late June, Musk gave $5 million each to super PAC tied to House and Senate Republican leadership, as well as $5 million to Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. Up through December, the tech mogul maintained a relatively low profile in the political sphere. He made an appearance at a White House dinner during the state visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in November. In mid-December, Musk contributed another $5 million each to the two Republican super PACs. And this month, he gave $10 million to a super PAC supporting Nate Morris, who is running to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), a source familiar with the matter shared with The Hill. The donations brought the Senate Leadership Fund to $100 million cash on hand at the end of the year, and the House leadership PAC to $54 million. Musk’s donation to the pro-Morris PAC is more than seven times the amount of cash on hand the campaign had in December. "It's a big deal for Trump and for the Republicans to have the world's richest man on their side,” said Republican strategist Brian Seitchik, who was Arizona state director for Trump’s 2016 campaign. “It certainly feels like the president and Elon Musk are back in a good place. For Republicans running around the country, I hope that holds as long as possible.” Seitchik shrugged off the rebuke Musk faced in the Wisconsin state Supreme Court race last year as an off-year blip, arguing that “the upside is greater than the potential downside.” Musk pumped roughly $2.9 million into his America PAC in the final six months of the year, contributing a total of $48 million in 2025, according to filings. The super PAC ended 2025 with more than $50 million spent and just $275,107 cash on hand. “It’s no surprise to me that someone like Elon Musk sees a fracturing Republican Party and cannot resist reengaging and trying to make that party his own,” argued Joe Zepecki, a Wisconsin-based Democratic strategist. Democrats are coasting off a series of off-year election wins, optimistic about their chances of netting the three seats they need to flip the House in November, with the Senate considered increasingly in play amid poor approval numbers for Trump and frustration with Republicans’ immigration crackdown. Zepecki acknowledged the power of big donations but contended Musk’s involvement could become a “tremendous risk” for the GOP in select races if Democrats can capitalize on frustrations like they did in the Badger State last year. The GOP’s House campaign arm ended the year with $45 million in cash on hand, neck and neck with its Democratic counterpart’s $46 million. The Senate Democratic campaign arm ended 2025 with $19 million to the GOP arm’s $17 million. And while the Democratic National Committee lost money in 2025, ending the year with $12 million in the bank, the Republican National Committee surged to nearly $90 million. Republicans hope Musk’s weight helps tip the scales in November. However, the tech billionaire, ever a beacon for controversy, is once again in hot water. Musk’s social platform X has faced backlash from regulators around the world over the past month, as his AI chatbot Grok produced thousands of sexualized images of women and children in response to user requests. While X ultimately placed restrictions on image editing and generation tools, the platform still faces several investigations. The company’s French offices were raided Tuesday as part of a probe launched by Parisian prosecutors last year that has since been expanded to cover Grok. X has dismissed the allegations underlying the probe as “baseless.” Musk has also been caught up in the latest tranche of documents released by the Justice Department related to Jeffrey Epstein. In several email exchanges between 2012 and 2014, the tech billionaire appeared to be planning trips to the disgraced financier’s island. However, Musk said in a post on X that he did not attend Epstein’s parties, travel on his plane or visit his island. This comes amid a consequential year for the tech mogul, as SpaceX is widely expected to go public. After merging with xAI this week, the spacecraft and satellite communications company is now valued at an estimated $1.25 trillion. “Especially after DOGE and his reputation, his political salience is probably becoming less positive than it was. But I'm not sure that just giving money necessarily is going to hurt the Republican cause or a particular candidate,” said Michael Kang, a Northwestern University law professor and campaign finance expert. “I would bet most of the Republican interests are happy to have the money, and maybe a little bit more ambivalent about his heavy and very public involvement.”

Nikola Tesla was a scientist and inventor whose work helped shape the modern world. Born in 1856 in what is now Croatia, Tesla went on to study engineering and physics. Over the course of his life, he imagined and created many ideas that became part of everyday life. His work includes innovations in alternating current (AC) electricity, early wireless communication concepts, and machines that helped power cities and industry. Tesla’s name is used today for units of magnetic measurement, a major automobile brand, and even awards in science and engineering.Tesla was not only known for his inventions, he was also known for the way he thought about ideas, creativity and innovation. Many of the things he proposed were far ahead of their time. Some of his ideas were copied, modified or used by others. He saw that happen in his lifetime and spoke openly about it.One of his famous lines is, “I don't care that they stole my idea… I care that they don't have any of their own.” This quote speaks to how Tesla viewed creativity and originality. Instead of worrying only about his own ideas being taken, he focused on the fact that too many people relied on the ideas of others instead of creating their own. Tesla’s words remind readers that true innovation comes not just from copying what already exists, but from imagining something new. His life, which was full of original ideas and daring experiments, shows how deep this statement really is.Quote of the day by Nikola Tesla“I don't care that they stole my idea… I care that they don't have any of their own.”Understanding the quote by Nikola TeslaWhen Tesla said, 'I don't care that they stole my idea...' He was worried about more than just losing credit; he was worried that they didn't have any of their own. He was not merely upset that others took his ideas. He was troubled by the lack of original thought in those who relied on copying rather than thinking for themselves. This quote suggests that Tesla valued creativity more than credit. He believed that people should try to come up with their own solutions and build new knowledge. For him, originality was more important than ownership. When someone copies an idea, the person who came up with it may feel bad or like they were treated unfairly. Tesla acknowledges that, but he shifts the focus to a bigger point: when people do not try to think for themselves, progress slows. According to Tesla, asking questions, exploring new possibilities, and creating original ideas are more valuable than reproducing what already exists. How to apply this quote by Nikola Tesla in daily lifeThe idea behind Tesla’s quote can be used in many everyday situations. It is not limited to inventors or scientists. Here are a few ways people can make this quote part of everyday life:1. School and learning: A lot of the time, students learn by copying other people's work or following their examples. If you use Tesla's idea, you would have to figure out why the answers are what they are and come up with your own ways to solve problems instead of just repeating what others have done.2. Workplace innovation: Sometimes, tasks at work become routine. Tesla's way of thinking can help employees by encouraging them to try new things, come up with new ideas, or try new things instead of doing the same things over and over.3. Creative fields: This idea can help artists, writers, musicians, and other creators make new things instead of just copying what's already out there. Original work is often more meaningful and personal.4. Everyday solutions: Every day, people have to deal with things like managing their time, budgeting their money, and cleaning up their space. People can change, improve, and make a system that works best for them instead of copying someone else's method exactly.5. Personal growth: You need to try new things, learn new skills, and try out new ideas in order to think for yourself. You will grow and feel more sure of yourself if you push your own limits instead of doing what others do.The point of Tesla's quote in all of these situations is to tell people to think for themselves and be brave enough to try new things. Why this quote by Nikola Tesla still mattersNikola Tesla lived in a time when machines and electricity were changing the world. Today, technology, science, and communication are still changing the way people live. In a world like this, original ideas are still useful.People who ask 'What if?' instead of doing what others have already done often come up with ideas that make things better.Tesla's quote reminds people that just copying doesn't make things better. Society moves forward when people think, imagine, question, and come up with new ideas. People with this way of thinking can take small steps toward new ideas and solutions in school, work, science, and everyday life.Who was Nikola TeslaNikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the village of Smiljan in the Austrian Empire, which is now in Croatia. His father was a priest, and even though his mother didn't go to school, she was creative and good at making tools and appliances for the house. Tesla was interested in science and electricity from a young age. He went to the Technical University of Graz to study engineering. After that, he worked in Europe before moving to the United States in 1884.Tesla worked with Thomas Edison for a short time in the United States before going on to do his own work. He came up with the alternating current (AC) system, which is now the standard way to send electricity over long distances. His AC motors and transformers were very important for making electricity useful in everyday life. Tesla also tried out radio waves, X-rays, and wireless communication.Tesla had a lot of fans during his career, but he also had to deal with money problems and other business problems. Some people took or made better use of his ideas, and he didn't always get full credit for them while he was alive. His legacy has grown over time, and he is now known as one of the most creative and forward-thinking inventors in history.Other famous quotes by Nikola TeslaNikola Tesla left behind many memorable lines that reflect his views on innovation, imagination and humanity. Some of his well-known quotes include:“The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine.”“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”“The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane.”“Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more.”“I don't care that they stole my idea . . I care that they don't have any of their own”“Be alone, that is the secret of invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born.”

Sure, agentic coding tools like Claude Code and Cursor have made writing code easier, but at the end of the day, I was still the one writing.
