Howler monkey roars exaggerate body size but are truthful to other howlers
Howler monkeys are relatively small primates known for their incredibly loud, low-frequency roars that sound as if they come from a much larger creature. This is useful in the animal kingdom because sounding big can deter predators and may discourage rivals before they get a glimpse of the caller's true size. But what do these noises say to members of their own species?

Women Are More Likely To Support Political Assassinations, Poll Shows Added: Jan 26, 2026
Women Are More Likely To Support Political Assassinations, Poll Shows
Women are more likely than men to believe political assassination can be justified as “assassination culture” rises, according to polling exclusively obtained by The Daily Wire.Women on both the Left and the Right were 14% to 20% more likely than men to believe the political assassination of high-profile figures could be justified, the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) found. The poll comes amid a spike in political violence marked by the assassinations of Charlie Kirk and UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as well as the attempt on President Donald Trump’s life. What is most surprising about the findings, according to NCRI’s co-founder Joel Finkelstein, is that those who justified political assassinations were not part of traditional high-risk groups, but people of all persuasions and demographics.“We dug into the data because this felt like it was describing a deeper moral crisis,” Finkelstein told The Daily Wire. “We assumed young men would be driving this, given unemployment, disengagement, and declining graduation rates. That’s why we explicitly examined gender. What surprised us, honestly shocked us, was that women were more likely to show tolerance for political violence.”To conduct the poll, NCRI used CloudResearch Prime Panels, from a nationally representative sample of American adults concerning political attitudes, public figures, and views on the future of the United States. Respondents were asked to rate, on a seven-point scale, “How unjustified or justified would someone be if they killed Zohran Mamdani?” and “How unjustified or justified would someone be if they killed Donald Trump?”Although women commit far fewer murders in the United States — accounting for roughly 13% of all killings over the past five years — the poll found they were more likely than men to say a political assassination could be justified. Specifically, 54.7% of women compared with 45.2% of men expressed some justification for Mamdani, while 57.1% of women expressed some justification for Trump, compared to 50.1% of men.(NCRI)Looking at the results for women alongside broader social trends, Finkelstein offered a hypothesis for the pattern.“Over the past decade, women, especially younger women have become more politically polarized, more emotionally moralized, and more immersed in online political identity formation,” he said. “That shift predates our study. What we’re seeing now may be the downstream effect of those longer-term changes.”NCRI ran a similar poll in April 2025 that specifically tracked “assassination culture” among left-leaning respondents. The survey found that 56% of participants left of center said the assassination of Trump to be justified, while 50.2% said the assassination of Elon Musk would be justified. The results made waves in the media and were publicly shared by Charlie Kirk just five months before he himself became the target of a politically motivated assassination. In the most recent poll, assassination culture was measured by asking respondents if they believed the political murder of two high-profile figures — Trump and Mamdani — could be justified. Among left-of-center respondents, belief that politically motivated assassination is justified rose to 67 %, while 58.1 % of centrists and 42.5 % of right-of-center respondents indicated at least some level of justification for killing Trump. Support for the assassination of Mamdani was also high, with 54 % of right-of-center respondents and 53.9 % of centrists expressing similar views along with 40.4% of left of center.NCRI said the timing of the poll captured heightened exposure to real-world violence, which they say may help explain shifts in attitudes toward its acceptability. While respondents differed in political ideology, the poll found a common thread among those who justified political assassination: a strong belief that America is in decline. Among respondents who said assassinating Trump could be justified, 70.3 % also believed the country is in decline, while 59.8 % of those who justified the assassination of Mamdani reported the same.Social media use was linked to support for political assassination. Left-of-center respondents who used social media the most scored 50% higher on a measure of justification for murdering Trump than those who used it the least. On the right, the most active social media users scored 59 % higher on justification for murdering Mamdani compared with the least active users.Experts suggest that online platforms may amplify extreme rhetoric and normalize aggressive behavior. “Today’s social media platforms reward outrage, absolutism, and symbolic aggression while flattening moral complexity,” Colin Wright, an evolutionary biologist and contributor to NCRI told the Daily Wire. “In these spaces, punishment is not just normalized but aestheticized. Violence is reframed as meaningful, expressive, or even admirable, which lowers the psychological barriers that usually keep it in check.”Age differences were also notable among respondents who justified political assassination. On the left, support was highest among younger adults, with 82 % of 18- to 29-year-olds indicating some level of justification. On the right, the highest support appeared among those aged 30 to 44, with 73% expressing justification.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) urged President Trump’s MAGA base to “take off their political blinders” as she expressed skepticism about the use of force deployed during the latest shooting in Minnesota involving a federal immigration agent. In a post on the social platform X, Greene touted her support for law enforcement and immigration enforcement, but she also defended the right to legally carry firearms, indirectly pushing back on claims that 37-year-old Alex Pretti posed a threat to federal officers because he was armed. “I unapologetically believe in border security and deporting criminal illegal aliens and I support law enforcement. However, I also unapologetically support the 2nd amendment,” Greene wrote. “Legally carrying a firearm is not the same as brandishing a firearm.” “I support American’s 1st and 4th amendment rights,” she continued. “There is nothing wrong with legally peacefully protesting and videoing.” The Trump administration has defended the shooting, saying the agent fired “defensive shots” at Pretti, who had a gun that was recovered by federal authorities. Others have accused the agent of acting with excessive force, pointing to video footage showing Pretti recording Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with his phone before the incident escalated. President Trump shared an image of the pistol allegedly found on Pretti in a Truth Social post, writing, “This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!) and ready to go.” “What is that all about? Where are the local Police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE officers? The Mayor and Governor called them off? It is stated that many of these Police were not allowed to do their job, that ICE had to protect themselves — Not an easy thing to do!” Trump continued. But Greene urged the president's supporters to imagine how they would react if a similar situation happened under the Biden administration, which Greene accused of too aggressively going after Jan. 6, 2021, rioters. “MAGA, consider it like this. We lost our minds when we watched Biden’s FBI track down and aggressively carry out home invasions and arrest on peaceful J6’ers who walked in the Capitol through open doors,” Greene wrote in her post. “[Imagine] if one of our MAGA independent journalists or even just a MAGA supporter stood in the street outside a J6’ers house while Biden’s FBI carried out a law enforcement operation, home invasion, and arrest. Then Biden’s FBI goes to the MAGA guy videoing it all and shoves a woman with him to the ground and sprays them with bear spray then throws the MAGA guy to the ground as MAGA guy was trying to help the woman off the ground. Then Biden’s FBI beats MAGA guy on the ground, disarms MAGA guy, and then shoots him dead,” Greene continued. “What would have been our reaction?” The former House member urged both parties to evaluate the situation objectively, rather than from partisan perspectives. “Both sides need to take off their political blinders,” she said. “You are all being incited into civil war, yet none of it solves any of the real problems that we all face, and tragically people are dying.”

A massive new study comparing more than 100,000 people with today’s most advanced AI systems delivers a surprising result: generative AI can now beat the average human on certain creativity tests. Models like GPT-4 showed strong performance on tasks designed to measure original thinking and idea generation, sometimes outperforming typical human responses. But there’s a clear ceiling. The most creative humans — especially the top 10% — still leave AI well behind, particularly on richer creative work like poetry and storytelling.

Don Lemon is terrible, but what are we to think of those who employed him? Added: Jan 26, 2026
Don Lemon is terrible, but what are we to think of those who employed him?
Site: The Hill
One must question what standards, if any, are being applied to the cushiest, best-paying jobs in media.
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon joined a group of protesters last weekend in storming a church during Sunday services. It really makes you think — even more notable than his own stupidity is that of a media ecosphere that could have employed, promoted and paid him handsomely until only very recently. If a man so clearly unfit for an anchor’s desk could succeed for as long as Lemon did, one must question what standards, if any, are being applied to the cushiest, best-paying jobs in media. Lemon is back in the news now. It's not for any act of journalism he might have accidentally committed, but for possibly violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act — a federal law that carries with it a sentence of up to $10,000 and six months in prison for a first offense. Lemon was seen last Sunday, livestreaming from the Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a group of anti-ICE demonstrators. They had targeted the church over the pastor’s alleged ties to the federal immigration enforcement agency. Before his friends stormed into the Sunday service, shouting and screaming at congregants — including crying children — Lemon recorded himself handing out coffee and donuts to the demonstrators. “The freedom to protest" is what the First Amendment is all about, Lemon said during the livestream. Although the First Amendment does protect the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, but it does not contain a supposed right to harass women and children in their places of worship. Following the disruption, in which Lemon repeatedly shoved his microphone into the pastor’s face after being told to leave multiple times, the former CNN anchor concluded his livestream by asking viewers to like and subscribe to his channel. On Thursday, the Justice Department announced that it had arrested at least three individuals involved in the St. Paul incident. Meanwhile, a judge rejected charges against Lemon, who insists he broke no law and is guilty only of practicing journalism. Lemon claims his critics are merely attacking him because he’s an "independent, gay, Black, happy, successful man." "I think people who are, you know, in the religious groups like that,” he added, “it's not the type of Christianity that I practice, but I think that they're entitled, and that entitlement comes from a supremacy, a White supremacy.” As the Justice Department rounds up Lemon’s co-conspirators, he is scrounging for likes and clout by doing man-on-the-street interviews — including one in which he revealed he doesn’t understand what a misdemeanor is. “Crossing the border illegally is not a crime?” a woman asked as Lemon interviewed her. “No,” the former anchor responded, “it’s not a criminal act. It’s a misdemeanor.” “A misdemeanor is not a crime?” the woman asked. Said Lemon, “It’s not a criminal act, no. If you get charged with a misdemeanor, that’s not a criminal act.” “Then why get charged at all then? If it’s not a criminal act?” the woman continued. “Because we have different levels of crime,” said a somewhat exasperated Lemon. “Everything is not the same.” “So, it is [a] crime?” she asked. “I shouldn’t say crime. It’s not a crime,” responded Lemon. “You’re not breaking the law. I mean —- you are breaking the law, but it’s not a criminal act.” At that point, a second person, a man, jumped into the conversation and pointed out to Lemon that driving while intoxicated is a misdemeanor. “Ok,” said Lemon, “if you want to qualify that. We’re doing semantics.” For those of you wondering, a misdemeanor is definitely a crime — a crime less serious than a felony. In fact, in New York, where Lemon resides, there are misdemeanor charges for “domestic violence, ‘forcible touching,’ third degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child," and "criminal obstruction of breathing," as journalist Matt Taibbi pointed out. If you think Lemon might have merely misspoken regarding his understanding of the First Amendment, or about whether misdemeanors are crimes, know that he probably didn't. He doesn’t actually seem to know anything about anything else, either. Recall that, while employed by CNN, Lemon asked one of Bill Cosby’s victims why she didn’t simply bite her assailant’s penis. He once claimed that women are past their “prime” after their 40s, and therefore former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley had no right to raise the issue former President Joe Biden’s advanced age because she herself is beyond her sell-by date. Lemon corrected the acting director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hurricane Center in Miami, who had claimed that climate change was not responsible for some recent hurricanes. Lemon, knowing better, insisted that climate change was actually responsible for the hurricanes. He offered this unassailable evidence: “Listen, I grew up there, and these storms are intensifying — something is causing them to intensify.” (By “there,” Lemon actually meant “Louisiana.”) He defended the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, where 13 U.S. servicemembers were killed, characterizing it simply as a case of omelets and broken eggs. He claimed that former Attorney General Loretta Lynch recused herself from the federal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server after she took a private tarmac meeting with the former First Lady. Lynch neither recused herself nor met with Hillary Clinton. Rather, she met with Bill Clinton. There are many more examples where these come from, but the gold standard Don Lemon anecdote is the time he suggested that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 could have vanished into a black hole. If you’re reading this, you probably remember a few of these incidents of anti-reporting. Now ask yourself this: Can you recall any counter-incidents, ones where Lemon committed an act of serious, grown-up journalism? I would be surprised if you could come up with at least two such examples. Yet Lemon somehow managed to remain gainfully employed by CNN for nearly 17 years, long enough to secure an impressive $7 million-a-year contract. And for what? Drunken New Year’s programming? It says a lot that CNN hired Lemon in the first place. It says even more that it took the news network nearly two decades to realize he has no talent for the news. Becket Adams is a longtime journalist and media critic in Washington.
