Quote of the day by Sylvia Plath: 'The worst enemy to creativity is...' - The Economic Times Added: Jan 25, 2026
Quote of the day by Sylvia Plath: 'The worst enemy to creativity is...' - The Economic Times
Sylvia Plath, one of the most influential poets and novelists of the 20th century, continues to inspire readers with her profound insights into human emotion, resilience, and creativity. One of her quotes that resonates deeply is:âThe worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.â â Sylvia PlathThis quote serves as a powerful reminder that our own uncertainty can often hold us back more than external obstacles. Plathâs words encourage readers to confront doubt and embrace their abilities fully.Understanding the Power of Plathâs WordsPlathâs quote highlights a universal truth: self-doubt is a major barrier to personal and creative growth. Whether it is writing, art, career decisions, or life choices, doubting oneâs own capability can prevent potential from being realised.By recognising that self-doubt is an âenemy,â Plath urges us to actively challenge it. Her message is clear: true creativity and achievement require confidence, courage, and belief in oneself.Relevance in Todayâs Fast-Paced WorldIn an era dominated by social media comparisons, instant success, and societal pressures, self-doubt has become even more prevalent. Plathâs insight encourages us to focus on inner strength rather than external validation. For students, professionals, and creatives alike, this quote reminds us that our growth depends more on self-belief than on approval from others. Confronting doubts head-on is the first step toward achieving our potential.Lessons from Sylvia Plath for Everyday LifeTrust Yourself: Confidence in your abilities is the foundation of success.Turn Doubt into Motivation: Use moments of uncertainty to push yourself further.Embrace Creativity: Let go of fear; innovation comes from risk-taking and experimentation.Be Persistent: Growth is a journey, overcoming self-doubt strengthens resilience.Reflect Regularly: Awareness of your thoughts helps identify when self-doubt is holding you back. Why Sylvia Plathâs Words EndureSylvia Plathâs writing, including her poetry collection Ariel and her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, explores themes of identity, mental health, and self-expression. Her honest, intense, and deeply human perspective resonates with readers across generations. This particular quote continues to inspire because it addresses a challenge everyone faces: the battle within. By recognising and overcoming self-doubt, we unlock creativity, confidence, and the ability to live authentically.

Israel's future at stake in upcoming election Added: Jan 25, 2026
Israelâs election may come soon and could change the country forever
Site: The Hill
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to call early elections this spring or summer in order to maximize his chances of forming a new coalition and staying in power, with the explosivâŚ
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a master political tactician, is likely to call early elections this spring or early summer â not by accident, but by design. His goal will be simple: maximize his chances of forming a new coalition and staying in power. Israelâs domestic politics is reaching a boiling point. Ultra-Orthodox parties are threatening to block passage of the national budget, a move that would automatically bring down the government, possibly within weeks. That timing would give Netanyahu a politically priceless opening: elections during Israelâs most emotionally charged period, immediately following Holocaust Remembrance Day, Memorial Day for fallen soldiers, and the joyous celebration of Independence Day. Add to that a carefully orchestrated campaign-season visit by President Trump, and Netanyahuâs political machine would be firing on all cylinders. But this election wonât just be about timing or tactics. It will be about Israelâs future and what kind of country Israelis want to live in. At the center of the storm is one explosive domestic issue: the ultra-Orthodox exemption from military service. While secular Israelis and non-Haredi religious Jews serve and die in uniform, most ultra-Orthodox men remain exempt, studying in yeshivas as Israel faces its longest war in history and an urgent need for an additional 10,000 to 20,000 combat troops. Hundreds of thousands of reservists from across the political and religious spectrum have spent months away from their families and jobs. The resentment is no longer simmering â itâs boiling over. As a recent Jerusalem Post editorial put it: âReserve soldiers and their families have carried a burden that is physical, financial, and spiritual. ... They have done so not because it is easy, and not because anyone has explained a coherent national destination â but because this is what a society does when it still believes it is one society.â Netanyahuâs Likud party has become dependent on these Orthodox factions to form governing coalitions. The price they demand is steep: permanent draft exemptions and massive taxpayer subsidies for school systems that refuse to teach core secular subjects, leaving many men unemployable and dependent on state welfare. To maintain the support of the ultra-Orthodox, Netanyahu has sought to reframe the debate by insisting that any legislation address all Israeli draft dodgers, a move that deliberately makes such a law harder to pass. Those who do not serve in the Israel Defense Forces or perform national service include over 90 percent of the ultra-Orthodox, more than 95 percent of Israeli Arabs, and roughly 13 percent of secular Jewish Israelis. In population terms, the Haredi community constitutes about 13 percent of Israelâs population, while Israeli Arabs make up about 21 percent. Israelâs âsecret sauceâ has always been national unity and social cohesion. Both are now under severe strain. The outcome of the next election will likely be decided by reservists, their families, their extended circles, and the 85 percent of Israelis who are not ultra-Orthodox. If Netanyahu cannot form a government without the Haredi parties, or refuses to consider a national unity government in which he is not prime minister, Israelâs social fabric may fray beyond repair. To better understand where Israel is heading, I have begun meeting one-on-one with Israeli political leaders across the spectrum. My first meeting was with former prime minister and current opposition leader Yair Lapid. Lapid is clear-eyed about one thing: running an election on âanyone but Bibiâ is a losing strategy. Israelis already have deeply entrenched views about Netanyahu, for and against. Lapid argues the country needs a vision, not just an alternative personality. Lapid has served in Netanyahu-led governments and later as prime minister without him. He believes Israel must remain both Jewish and democratic â not choose one over the other. In his view, Israelâs military strength and technological dominance are inseparable from its openness. Only a free, pluralistic society could have produced the Iron Dome and the innovations that made Israel the âStartup Nation.â During the 2014 Gaza war, Lapid defended Netanyahuâs government out of principle rather than political convenience, even as others sought partisan advantage. Even while in opposition in 2024, he traveled to Europe to defend Israelâs conduct. Yet that same commitment led him to condemn Netanyahu for what he called a âcomplete diplomatic failureâ in 2026 over the composition of Gazaâs executive board, faulting the prime minister for letting Egypt be sidelined while Qatar and Turkey were elevated. Many Americans donât understand how Israelâs fractured parliamentary system works or how destabilizing it can be. Such systems may limp along in countries without existential threats, but Israel has never known a single day of true peace in its 78-year history. This election matters not just to Israelis, but to Americans. Israel remains a strategic pillar of U.S. national security, effectively a forward U.S. aircraft carrier in the most volatile region on earth. For Americans trying to understand Israelâs internal divide and upcoming election, one imperfect but telling question is this: Does an Israeli primarily define themselves as Jewish or as Israeli? Often, the former aligns with the political right, the latter with the left, though security hawks exist on both sides. Wherever one stands politically in Israel, and for Americans who believe a strong Israel is vital to U.S. security, they should see this upcoming election for what it is: a defining moment that demands shared responsibility for Israelâs defense. The election is coming sooner than many expect, and it may prove one of the most consequential in the country's history. Eric R. Mandel is the director of the Middle East Political Information Network and senior security editor for the Jerusalem Postâs Jerusalem Report.

Clickbait: How the left created yet another false story to trigger outrage Added: Jan 25, 2026
Clickbait: How the left created yet another false story to trigger outrage
Site: The Hill
They are using this five-year-old as bait â clickbait â to fuel protests and outrage.
"I am outraged, and you should be too." That message from former Vice President Kamala Harris has been a virtual mantra of the Democratic Party for years. For several months, this has meant decrying the imminent death of democracy and our descent into authoritarianism. Now, it means falsely claiming that ICE "kidnapped" or "arrested" a five-year-old boy and used him as "bait" to catch someone. The "bait boy" story is actually the latest clickbait hoax in our "Age of Rage.â Five years ago, Harris was expressing the same call for outrage over the false story of Border agents whipping migrants in Texas. She expressed disgust over the "horrible and deeply troubling" scenes reminiscent of the slave period. It quickly became a pile-on, with the media spreading the false account. Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) described the incident as âworse than what we witnessed in slaveryâ and âwhite supremacist behavior.â President Biden threw the agents under the bus, publicly expressing disgust over their conduct and promising punishment before any investigation had occurred: âIt was horrible what to see, as you saw â to see people treated like they did: horses nearly running them over and people being strapped. Itâs outrageous. I promise you, those people will pay.â The media continued to repeat the false account, even as many of us pointed out that the publicly available video showed the story was demonstrably untrue. It did not matter. It fit the narrative on the left, and the agents were left under investigation for more than a year before being cleared of the "whipping" charges. After the false story was exposed, the media just shrugged and went on to the next gotcha story. As for this new hoax, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) declared the incident to be âthe worst of the damn worstâ in a video on X. Craig, a candidate for Senate, accused federal officers of taking the boy to âuse him to lure his father out.â That is false. According to reports, the father was spotted in public and fled, abandoning the boy. Like Harris, Craig reminded citizens that "this is a time where we should all be outraged. If this doesnât pierce through your humanity, as a Republican member of Congress, if you canât speak out about this, then youâve got no humanity left.â The key, again, is the requisite outrage. If you are not outraged, you are not human. It is often said that we are living in a "post-truth" political environment. The term rose to favor due to the 2016 election of President Trump. Oxford Dictionaries specifically cited Trump when it selected the term as word of the year. The irony is that the proof of post-truth politics is often found among those who use it the most on the left, in the media and academia. The bait boy hoax is particularly disgraceful. It is common to have minor children present during arrests of all kinds. Officers will often try to get family members to take a child rather than put him into child services. In this case, ICE officers were trying to detain Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, an undocumented Ecuadorian national, when he bolted and left behind his five-year-old child, Liam Conejo Ramos. Rather than leave the child in the freezing cold on the street, the officers took the child to his home to get his mother to take him in. She refused to open the door despite agents reportedly saying that she would not be detained. They proceeded to take the boy to McDonald's, play his favorite music, and take care of him. He was never arrested. They also did not send him into detention. According to ICE, his father asked for the boy to be allowed to stay with him at a detention facility, and ICE agreed. One can have good-faith objections to immigration enforcement policies. The Trump administration has made it a priority to deport the millions of undocumented migrants allowed into the country under the Biden administration. That is what Trump pledged to do in his campaign. Post-truth politics and post-truth journalism are designed to fuel rage â to give people license to say and do things that they would not ordinarily say or do. Even nurses this week have joined in the hate-fest against ICE and the administration. In New York, an injured NYPD officer and his colleagues were treated rudely by nurses when they were mistaken for ICE officers. In Florida, a nurse named Lexie Lawler at the Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital directed her rage at White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who is expecting her second child. Lawler posted that "As a labor and delivery nurse, it gives me great joy to wish Karoline Leavitt a fourth-degree tear. I hope you f------- rip from bow to stern and never s--- normally again, you c---." Like the ICE agents, Leavitt is not treated as a person but some Golem who can be joyfully and righteously harmed. There is a strange aspect to rage addictions. Many on the left will use false stories to virtue signal, then unleash the most unvirtuous attacks. The greatest irony is that these individuals are doing precisely what they accuse ICE of doing. They are using this five-year-old as bait â clickbait â to fuel protests and outrage. The call for outrage is meant to strip away the humanity of ICE agents, who are portrayed as having no sympathy or concern for a child. Indeed, the use of this child by protesters strips him of his humanity. He was as much of a prop as the ICE agents were. The bait boy hoax does show that Harris and Craig may be right about one thing: "This is a time where we should all be outraged." Jonathan Turley is a law professor and the author of the forthcoming âRage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution,â which will be released on Feb. 3 as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
