The Tesla chief was in conversation with BlackRock's CEO Laurence Fink, who serves as the forum's interim co-chair. A WEF spokesperson revealed that year that Musk hadn't received an invitation, despite his claims he'd declined one for being "boring." At the beginning of his answer, he joked about what he tells people when they ask him about whether or not aliens exist. “I tell them I am one,” he said, before pointing out that amid all the satellites orbiting Earth and all the SpaceX shuttles being launched, none of them had to dodge alien spacecraft. “We need to assume that life and consciousness is extremely rare, and it might only be us,” he said, briefly pausing and then following up his train of thought. “If that's the case, then we need to do everything possible to ensure that … the light of consciousness is not extinguished,” Mr Musk added. He said that particular thought process was the main motivation behind his exploration of space and trying to make life on other planets possible. “I basically want to maximise the probability that civilisation has a great future and to expand consciousness beyond Earth,” said the SpaceX chief. Mr Fink's interview also touched upon energy production, robotics and Tesla's plans to implement autonomous vehicles. Mr Musk, who also leads xAI, acknowledged the technology's incredible energy demands and praised China for increasing its energy production. He also gave a tantalising glimpse of a goal being pursued by SpaceX. “Within a few years, we want to be launching solar-powered AI satellites,” Mr Musk said, adding that the limitless of space would make the endeavour well worthwhile. “There's so much room in space, and it's enormous what you can scale to,” he said. "This is a historic moment and we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for yes, the commitment, resilience, generosity and courage of the Venezuelan people, but also because we have counted with the support, vision and courage of incredible leaders such as the president of United States, Donald Trump, and members of this honorable Congress," Machado told reporters. Machado gave Trump the award nearly two weeks after U.S. military forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and brought him to New York to face criminal charges. Machado later told reporters that she told Trump about a medal adorned with President George Washington's likeness that Revolutionary War Gen. Marquis de Lafayette handed to Venezuelan revolutionary and South American hero Simón Bolivar. "Two hundred years in history, the people of Bolivar are giving back to the heir of Washington a medal, in this case the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom," Machado said. Trump later shared photos of himself holding a frame containing the prize, with Machado by his side in the Oval Office. The act of handing the medal over to Trump was met with criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that while the physical awards can be given away, the honor itself is "inseparably linked" to the winner. "Regardless of what may happen to the medal, the diploma, or the prize money, it is and remains the original laureate who is recorded in history as the recipient of the prize," the committee stated. "Even if the medal or diploma later comes into someone else’s possession, this does not alter who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize." Norwegian Labour Party politician Raymond Johansen slammed Trump for accepting Machado's award, calling it "incredibly embarrassing and damaging." And Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) knocked Trump for letting Machado give the medal to him, saying the president looked "kind of silly." Trump openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize last October before Machado won. The president linked not receiving the award with considering using military force to obtain Greenland, according to a text exchange with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. "Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” Trump wrote Støre. Trump backtracked on his military threat Wednesday while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and later announced the "framework" of a deal revolving around the Danish island territory.

More often than not, Americans elect presidents based on domestic issues. But presidents are inevitably dragged into foreign policy issues and problems. President Trump is no exception. Fittingly for Trump, his situation is more extreme than most. Elected under the banner of “America First,” Trump has not so much been dragged into foreign affairs as he has enthusiastically embraced it. And that could prove dangerous. The American public does tend to support the president in national security crises. But the reality is that, absent the perception of a real national security threat, Americans tune out international affairs. Americans are insular. When asked to rank their top issue, foreign policy consistently lags issues like inflation, the economy and health care — usually barely topping 1 percent. And this makes sense. The U.S. is less connected to outside countries than any other developed economy. As a percentage of GDP, its trade (imports and exports) is at a lower percentage than for any other developed economy, and most undeveloped ones. Sourced from World Bank data, imports were just 15 percent of GDP, nearly 10 points less than Japan. And exports were under 12 percent — 21 points below France, which is lowest in the European Union. This disconnect gives presidents a lot of leeway in foreign policy. As long as the economy is doing well, international affairs are not a problem. And when the economy goes bad — see Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush — no amount of international success helps. Alternatively, presidents whose foreign adventures turn into a quagmire can see their presidencies crippled (see Lyndon Johnson and George W. Bush). Thus, the challenge for Trump is not just to make his foreign policy work, but — much more importantly — to make hiw domestic policy succeed. RealClearPolitics averages overall approval and by issue. At the time of writing this piece, Trump was net negative 15 points in overall approval, and down 7 points in the Trump-favorable Rasmussen poll. His foreign policy approval was down to a similar level. But polling on inflation is especially bad — down 23 points. And he is down 15 points on the economy in general. On the two domestic issues where Trump has been most focused, his numbers are much better. Despite the controversy in Minnesota, Trump is only down 4 percent on immigration on average, and just 1.3 percent on crime. Both Morning Consult and RMG Research have Trump net positive in their most recent polls on immigration. Looking at the most recent YouGov benchmark (a somewhat Trump-unfavorable survey), the poll tells the same story. Trump’s personal approval is negative 15 points, but he performs 8 points better on crime and 5 points better on immigration. On inflation, he’s12 points worse. The problem Trump has is that his best issues are not the top concern of the overall public and independents (i.e., swing voters). Immigration was the top issue of 12 percent of the public and just 6 percent of independents. Crime is a lowly 2 percent (4 percent for independents). Meanwhile, inflation was at 22 percent and 25 percent, respectively. The more Trump-favorable Wall Street Journal poll has the president's favorability at negative 7 points. But again, his domestic policy numbers are a problem. He performs 3 points worse on the economy, 5 points worse on health care and 10 points worse on inflation. Confirming other polls, Trump is 3 points better on immigration and 6 points net positive on “border security.” The curious thing is that Trump is getting a bad rap on inflation. The Economist, a strongly anti-Trump publication, did a deep dive into the numbers and found that inflation has cooled significantly under Trump. Even more importantly, real incomes (income adjusted for inflation) are rising under Trump — and rising more for lower-income Americans. The problem for Trump is not entirely of his own making. After years of tame inflation, the shock under former President Joe Biden was severe. And the bigger the shock to the public, the longer it takes to get used to the new normal. Trump has not ignored the issue; he has proposed banning private equity from owning homes, presumably to force more supply into the market. He has worked to get deals for cheaper drugs and put caps on credit card interest rates. But the problem for Trump is twofold. First, there is not a coherent policy he is promoting. It’s a lot of opportunism. Cutting housing costs requires a broad set of policy moves, as does reining in health care costs. Trump needs to announce a big set of initiatives in each area, not drip out one-off deals. The second problem is one of emphasis. Each of Trump’s recent shots at inflation have been swamped by his foreign policy moves. His proposal to cap credit card interest rates has been drowned by talk of acquiring Greenland, something never even broached in his 2024 campaign. And support is weak, with just 29 percent in favor (YouGov poll), including just 58 percent of Republicans — a very low number for Trump. For nearly four years, the American public has identified inflation as the No.1 issue, and by overwhelming numbers. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris ignored it. If Trump continues to allow himself to be distracted away from tackling inflation, he is likely to pay a big price. As former special counsel Jack Smith testifies publicly before Congress for the first time, President Donald Trump is watching. In a Truth Social post Thursday afternoon, Trump wrote that Smith was being “DECIMATED” by members of the House Judiciary Committee — even as panel Republicans have yet to formally rebut the findings of Smith’s investigation into Trump’s retention of classified documents and attempts to subvert the results of the 2020 election. The president also suggested he hoped Attorney General Pam Bondi was looking into Smith's conduct. “If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse!” Trump wrote of Smith. “Hopefully the Attorney General is looking at what he’s done, including some of the crooked and corrupt witnesses that he was attempting to use in his case against me.” Smith's cases were widely seen as the strongest vehicles for putting Trump behind bars. Both matters were ultimately dropped by the Justice Department before Trump took office for the second time in 2025. The Trump Justice Department has sought to bring criminal charges against several of the president's political adversaries, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey. Trump has also long argued for Smith's prosecution, too. A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment on Trump's post beyond Smith's remarks during the hearing. Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) asked Smith if he was aware of the president's social media message and if he had a response; Smith said he did not know about it and did not have anything to add. House Republicans have been antagonistic of Smith during the hearing so far but have focused their questioning heavily on Smith's procedure in pursuing his cases against the president — most notably the subpoenas he obtained for the phone data of several sitting Republican lawmakers.
