Quote of the day by Immanuel Kant: 'One who makes himself a worm cannot complain afterwards if people step on him' - The Economic Times Added: Jan 19, 2026
Quote of the day by Immanuel Kant: 'One who makes himself a worm cannot complain afterwards if people step on him' - The Economic Times
Immanuel Kants quote highlights the link between self-respect and how individuals are treated by others, stressing that dignity begins from within. Through strong imagery, he warns that consistently accepting disrespect can invite further disregard, not because mistreatment is justified, but because self-worth has been undermined. Rooted in his moral philosophy, the idea reinforces Kants belief that respecting oneself is a moral duty tied to human reason and autonomy.
Immanuel Kant, one of the most influential philosophers in Western thought, is known for his strong views on human dignity, moral duty, and autonomy. His ideas shape discussions on ethics and personal conduct even today. The quote of the day attributed to him reflects this enduring relevance and offers a direct lesson on self-respect and how individuals position themselves in society. Kant’s observation is often cited in conversations about personal boundaries and moral responsibility. The quote reads, “One who makes himself a worm cannot complain afterwards if people step on him.” In this statement, Kant uses sharp imagery to underline a serious point. The line suggests that when a person willingly reduces their own sense of worth or consistently accepts disrespect, they weaken their moral position. As a result, they should not be surprised if others take advantage of that lowered stance. The message does not justify cruelty or mistreatment. Instead, it highlights the importance of how individuals view and carry themselves. Kant’s comparison points to the consequences of self-abandonment, where a lack of self-respect can invite disregard from others.126676705 Explaining the Meaning in Everyday TermsKant’s quote emphasizes that dignity begins from within. When someone repeatedly allows themselves to be humiliated, ignored, or treated unfairly without resistance, they signal that such behavior is acceptable. Over time, this can shape how others behave toward them. The philosopher’s words stress accountability in how one presents oneself in moral and social life.At the same time, the quote reflects Kant’s belief that every human being possesses inherent worth because of their capacity for reason. Ignoring this inner value is not just a personal loss but also a moral failure. According to Kant, respecting oneself is a foundational step toward ethical living.126639952 Self-Respect as a Moral ObligationKant’s moral philosophy places great weight on duty, including duties one owes to oneself. As explained by the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Kant argued that the moral value of an action lies in the intention behind it, not in its outcome. From this perspective, maintaining self-respect is a moral duty rooted in reason, not a matter of pride or ego.By allowing oneself to be reduced or silenced, a person acts against their own rational nature. Kant believed this internal neglect weakens moral autonomy, which is central to his ethical framework.126564718 Kant’s Philosophical BackgroundAccording to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) stands at the center of modern philosophy. His major works, including Critique of Pure Reason and Critique of Practical Reason, introduced the idea that human reason plays an active role in shaping experience and moral law. He argued that morality, science, and belief systems are grounded in the same foundation of human autonomy.Kant’s upbringing, education, and long academic career shaped his focus on discipline, independence, and ethical responsibility. These values are reflected clearly in the quote, which warns against surrendering one’s dignity. Kant’s words remind that while injustice exists, personal dignity should not be surrendered. Respect from others often begins with the respect individuals show themselves, a principle that remains as relevant today as it was in Kant’s time.Immanuel Kant was born on April 22, 1724, in Königsberg, East Prussia, into a modest artisan family. Despite the limited means of his household, he received a strong foundation in hard work, honesty, and independence from his parents. He studied at the Pietist Collegium Fridericianum, where he initially reacted against the strict religious practices and found refuge in classical studies. Later, he attended the University of Königsberg, where he immersed himself in philosophy, mathematics, and natural sciences. His early exposure to thinkers like Christian Wolff, John Locke, and Isaac Newton helped shape his approach, ultimately leading him to develop a philosophy centered on reason, autonomy, and moral law, which would influence generations to come.Kant was also known for leading an unusually disciplined and predictable life. According to biographical accounts referenced by philosophical encyclopedias, he spent almost his entire life in Königsberg and rarely traveled beyond the city. His daily routine was so precise that locals were said to set their clocks by his afternoon walks. This strict structure reflected his belief in order, discipline, and rational control, values that also shaped his philosophical work. Kant never married and devoted most of his life to teaching and writing, producing ideas that gained wider recognition only later in his career but went on to have a lasting global influence.

The fake media panic over Greenland Added: Jan 19, 2026
The fake media panic over Greenland
Site: The Hill
The frantic, overblown, hair-on-fire coverage points to something no one believes will happen.
Truly, there is no more perfect union than the one between President Trump and the news media. They live for each other. Trump craves the press’s undivided attention and the press craves the sensational Trump content machine. For all the oppositional talk from journalists and editorial boards, the president and the press are a match made in heaven. Consider, for example, the recent hair-on-fire news coverage of Europe’s response to Trump’s fixation on acquiring Greenland, which is owned by Denmark, a NATO member. The tone and style of the coverage have been positively Trumpian. “Denmark ‘will shoot first and ask questions later’ over Greenland,” reads one scary headline from the U.K.’s Telegraph. The “shoot first” rule dates back to the 1950s and the Cold War — it has remained in effect ever since. People are only now discovering a decades-old policy and rebranding it as if it were meant for the U.S. CNN reported this week, “European nations send additional troops to Greenland as US annexation threats escalate.” “European military heads to Greenland as Trump's ambitions for island undeterred by talks,” Reuters reported. From the sounds of it, we’re well on our way to World War III and the collapse of NATO, with a European army gathered in Greenland for a bloody showdown with the U.S. Armed Forces. If that's what you're expecting, well, it's probably time to get a grip. We’re not even in the saber-rattling phase, much less the shooting-war phase. We’re still in the negotiation phase of the Greenland gambit. The White House knows it. Denmark knows it. France sent the largest force to Greenland — about 15 mountain infantry specialists. Germany sent all of 13 personnel, a reconnaissance team. Norway and Finland each sent two liaison officers. Sweden sent between three and five officers. The Netherlands sent one naval officer, and the U.K. also sent one officer. Meanwhile, roughly 150 to 200 U.S. servicemen are currently stationed in Greenland at Pituffik Space Base, which operates under a 1951 agreement with Denmark. To be fair, it’s always unclear whether Trump isn't joking when he says he’ll seize the Arctic island by force if necessary. Who can even tell with this man? You can’t fault the press for reporting on Trump’s exact words, implying that he might seriously be considering a military invasion of a country protected by NATO. But you can fault them for the frantic, overblown coverage of the European response to Trump’s crude approach to securing Greenland for the U.S. Europe, which suffers from an acute inferiority complex but still considers itself the more mature and sophisticated party, has responded to Trump’s overtures with a lot of nationalistic bravado about the European will to fight and defend sovereign interests. It is adorable, considering the continent’s national defense has been mostly funded and maintained by the U.S. for decades. More importantly, some NATO European countries have pledged a few symbolic troops to Greenland as a gesture of solidarity against a country whose naval budget alone surpasses the combined annual GDPs of at least six NATO nations. “Symbolic’ is the key word here, because that’s all these deployments are — three dozen European soldiers and officers, planted in Greenland to reaffirm Denmark’s ownership. More importantly, the deployments aim to emphasize that the island falls under NATO protection. (Whether Greenland is covered by the EU defense clause is evidently a point of debate in Brussels.) In other words, Denmark, with the support of its continental friends, is showing off a bit. It is making a statement and putting on a good show. It is posturing. What Denmark and her allies are not doing is staging a meaningful military buildup in Greenland, preparing for war with America. They’re not even establishing a genuine “tripwire” scenario with genuine consequences. None of these countries would even remotely consider an armed or even an economic conflict with the U.S. I'll put it this way: the same European NATO countries that have been quick to put “boots on the ground” in Greenland have yet to commit a single warm body to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion. These countries have stood by for nearly four years while Russia has invaded westward on their own continent in an actual shooting war, with real bullets and casualties. They haven’t sent a single soldier, reasoning that it would only escalate and exacerbate the conflict if they did. Oh, also, Europeans still depend on Russian energy. Yet we’re supposed to believe that these same countries are ready to go out guns ablaze against the U.S., a fellow NATO member, over Greenland, a territory that has been moving toward independence since 1979? We’re to believe these same countries would skip negotiation and diplomacy and jump straight into a shooting war with the world’s leading nuclear superpower, all for mere rhetoric? Come on. These deployments are a negotiating tactic. Denmark and her friends are putting on a show meant to drive up the price tag for Greenland. Bank on it. Members of the press might not realize what Denmark is doing, but I suspect a certain U.S. real estate mogul does. Becket Adams is a longtime journalist and media critic in Washington.

Quantum 'alchemy' made feasible with excitons
What if you could create new materials just by shining a light at them? To most, this sounds like science fiction or alchemy, but to physicists investigating the burgeoning field of Floquet engineering, this is the goal. With a periodic drive, like light, scientists can "dress up" the electronic structure of any material, altering its fundamental properties—such as turning a simple semiconductor into a superconductor.

President Trump will ask countries that want to join his "Board of Peace" to oversee Gaza to pay $1 billion for membership, according to reporting from Bloomberg and The Atlantic on Saturday. A draft charter seen by both outlets showed that Trump will serve as the executive board's inaugural chairman, who will approve which member states can join on the board. The board will become official after three member states agree to the charter. "Each Member State shall serve a term of no more than three years from this Charter’s entry into force, subject to renewal by the Chairman," the draft reads, according to Bloomberg. "The three-year membership term shall not apply to Member States that contribute more than USD $1,000,000,000 in cash funds to the Board of Peace within the first year of the Charter’s entry into force." Member states will be able to vote on board decisions, but Trump will have sole authority to approve them, the outlets reported. What the $1 billion for membership will fund remains unclear. The Atlantic reported that the draft charter does not address where membership fees go, only that funding for board expenses will be "through voluntary funding from Member States, other States, organizations, or other sources." The draft charter's preamble states that the board will "depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed" and will operate as "a more nimble and effective international peace-building body, which the magazine indicated was a dismissal of the United Nations. The draft charter also makes no mention of the Gaza Strip, The Atlantic wrote. The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. The board was designed to oversee and implement Trump's 20-point peace plan in Gaza set in place after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire to end a bloody two-year-long conflict in the Gaza Strip. Trump recently announced that Phase 2 of the peace plan had begun, which requires Hamas to have its militants disarm and Israel to pull back its forces out of Gaza. Trump said that the board was formed this week, later announcing that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and billionaire investors Robert Gabriel and Marc Rowan will be on the board. The White House invited the presidents of Turkey, Argentina and Egypt to join the board. Argentinian President Javier Milei said he accepted the invitation, sharing a digital copy of the invitation in a post on the social platform X. He called it "an honor" to be invited on the board as a "Founding Member." "Argentina will always stand with the countries that confront terrorism head-on, that defend life and property, and that promote peace and freedom," Milei wrote. "It is an honor for us to accompany you in such a great responsibility." Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed that President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received the letter. Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran also confirmed that Trump invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The White House also invited several other foreign officials and politicians from Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria and the Netherlands, along with Cypriot-Israeli real estate magnate Yakir Gabay and Dutch politician Sigrid Kaag, the current U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.

The three highest-ranking Catholic cardinals who lead archdioceses in the United States issued a statement Monday criticizing U.S. foreign policy as overly militaristic, referencing President Trump's recent operation in Venezuela and threats to take Greenland by force. In a joint statement, Cardinals Blase Cupich, Robert McElroy and Joseph Tobin, the archbishops of Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Newark, N.J., respectively, reiterated Pope Leo XIV’s remarks to the Vatican diplomatic corps on Jan. 9. In those remarks, the pope said “a diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force, by either individuals or groups of allies.” “War is back in vogue, and a zeal for war is spreading,” he continued. “The principle established after the Second World War, which prohibited nations from using force to violate the borders of others, has been completely undermined.” Cupich, McElroy and Tobin referenced the U.S. capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and Trump repeatedly expressing interest in acquiring Greenland in arguing that the country has “entered into the most profound and searing debate about the moral foundation for America’s actions in the world since the end of the Cold War.” "Peace is no longer sought as a gift and desirable good in itself, or in pursuit of 'the establishment of the ordered universe willed by God with a more perfect form of justice among men and women,'" they wrote. "Instead, peace is sought through weapons as a condition for asserting one’s own dominion." They also mentioned Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which has killed roughly 15,000 Ukrainian civilians and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides, as a conflict that has “raised basic questions about the use of military force and the meaning of peace.” Since returning to office, Trump also authorized strikes against Iranian oil facilities in June and ISIS targets in Nigeria last month. The U.S. also carried out multiple strikes against ISIS militants in Syria after a person affiliated with the terrorist group killed two Iowa National Guard members and an American interpreter near Palmyra on Dec. 13. “Our country’s moral role in confronting evil around the world, sustaining the right to life and human dignity, and supporting religious liberty are all under examination,” the cardinals said. “And the building of just and sustainable peace, so crucial to humanity’s well-being now and in the future, is being reduced to partisan categories that encourage polarization and destructive policies.” The pope and American Catholic officials have also criticized the president’s immigration crackdown in his second term. Pope Leo said in September that those who are against abortion but in favor of capital punishment or “inhuman” treatment of migrants are not truly “pro-life.”

California billionaires flocked to Florida 'within seven days' to escape looming wealth tax | Fox Business Added: Jan 19, 2026
California billionaires flocked to Florida 'within seven days' to escape looming wealth tax | Fox Business
EXCLUSIVE: The realization hit fast — and the response was even faster. As California’s proposed "billionaire tax" began gaining momentum late last year, some of the wealthiest people in the country didn’t wait for ballots, lawmakers or court challenges — they moved. "Then a couple more flew into Miami, bought properties and closed within seven days," luxury real estate broker Julian Johnston of The Corcoran Group told Fox News Digital. "So then it was a tipping point." According to Johnston — who told Fox News Digital that he’s currently working with three billionaires to move them from California to South Florida — the urgency was driven by staggering potential losses. "One client said, ‘You know, this could be like a $5 billion tax for me,’" he recalled. "So they’re moving because of that." KEN GRIFFIN'S FLORIDA TAKEOVER: CITADEL FOUNDER SHELLS OUT $180M FOR LATEST PIECE OF MIAMI EMPIRE The chatter all started at Miami’s high-profile Art Basel fair in early December, Johnston said, and carried into many of the ultra-wealthy’s holiday celebrations on the island of St. Barts. "They're all dining and wining together and talking about this proposed tax. And then when the proposed tax gained speed, they then understood that they had to either rent or purchase something out of California to establish residency and reduce their net worth exposure to the proposed billionaire tax," he explained. "It's a melting pot and they're all friends. And that's the thing. The tipping point was when four or five of them bought and three more were going into contract. The rest of them, all their friends are here. And they talked about the office buildings as well." "I think this happened very quickly, even for them," Johnston continued. "Now that it's… January, into 2026, it has slowed down a little bit… So if you didn't buy or rent before the end of the year, it may be too late. It may apply to you no matter what now." While it has not yet qualified for the November ballot, the proposal — backed by the Service Employees International Union–United Healthcare Workers West — would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of California residents worth more than $1 billion. The tax would be due in 2027, and taxpayers could spread payments over five years, with additional costs, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office. If the measure is approved by voters, anyone who was a California resident on Jan. 1, 2026, would owe the tax, according to the proposal. When asked to describe the billionaires he’s working with, Johnston mentioned "Palo Alto guys" who haven’t spent much time in Miami before. FLORIDA DOMINATES NATION'S LUXURY REAL ESTATE MARKET WITH LARRY PAGE'S MIAMI ESTATE TOPPING DECEMBER SALES "There's a few other very big founders and also tech giants and also venture capitalist firms, the heads of which I've also moved here," he said. "It was always a layover, one night, an event, but Miami's changed a lot in the last 10 years. It's culturally more interesting… They said they were quite happy to move here and then see what happens in the next few years." Florida famously has no state income tax for residents who live there at least 183 days out of the year, but Johnston explained what South Florida offers that other tax havens like Texas, Tennessee and Nevada can't match. "I think that you have to look at the culture amongst these VC firms and tech guys, that they like to be around each other… They're already moving here, some of them are already here or have established residency here, they're gonna spend more time and then they're going to have the multiplier effect of their friends coming in to spend time with them," he said. "Miami has a very outdoor lifestyle similar to California," Johnston further argued. "I think that the climate suits them. I think there's a lot of security here. Politically it's safe and economically, I mean, two of the largest capital projects in the country are in Miami right now." Beyond real estate, the California billionaires are aware they’re taking investment capital with them — and that lawmakers may not fully grasp how mobile wealth has become. "That was a discussion point amongst some of them [in] the lunchroom. They were talking about the fact that, [if] enough of them move, it's actually gonna cause change," Johnston said. "It will financially change the landscape for the government's budget… And they want reform… they want reform before they move back." GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE Across his 25-year career in luxury sales, Johnston agrees this current migration wave feels different in terms of the sheer scale of wealth and the speed at which high-net-worth individuals want to divest from the West Coast. "I think Florida has a positive net migration for the next 20 years… it's a boomtown," he said. "Those big companies are going to push the state to spend more money on just activities and amenities and bring so many people from around the world that had never been to Miami before, because I do think it's a [city of the future] for America."
