Google co-founder Sergey Brin recently offered a peek into one of his lifeâs decisions and how the value of higher education is changing in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking to a new generation of engineers at Stanford University recently, Brin said that while the âStanford-to-Silicon-Valleyâ pipeline remains legendary, his own path to becoming a tech leader was defined by curiosity rather than a strategic pursuit of credentials.âI chose computer science because I had a passion for it,â he told the student gathering, while adding, âIt was kind of a no-brainer for me. I guess you could say I was also lucky because I was also in such a transformative field.âAI is changing education but Sergey Brin says don't abandon fieldsBrinâs comments came at a time when thereâs a narrative that the rise of AI is challenging long-held assumptions about the value of higher education. For example, AI models like Gemini and ChatGPT are becoming increasingly capable of writing code, many students have questioned whether a computer science degree remains a viable investment. Brin cautioned against fleeing the field out of automation fears.âI wouldnât go off and switch to comparative literature because you think the AI is good at coding. The AI is probably even better at comparative literature, just to be perfectly honest anyway,â Brin quipped.Google is changing how they hireDespite his academic push, Brin acknowledged that Googleâs hiring philosophy has evolved significantly. The tech giant is increasingly looking past the four-year degree in favour of âself-taught starsâ.âIn as much as weâve hired a lot of academic stars, weâve hired tons of people who donât have bachelorâs degrees,â Sergey Brin noted, adding, âThey just figure things out on their own in some weird corner.âThe numbers back up this shift. Citing data from the Burning Glass Institute, a report by Fortune said that the share of Google job postings requiring a degree plummeted from 93% in 2017 to 77% in 2022. Notably, Brinâs comments align with CEOs like JPMorganâs Jamie Dimon and Palantirâs Alex Karp. Both of the leaders have supported that high-paying roles should be for those who have proven skills and should not depend of their formal education. As per Great Place to Work CEO Michael Bush, 'Almost everyone is realizing that they're missing out on great talent by having a degree requirement,' Bush told Fortune. Industry leaders like Apple, Microsoft and Cisco are reportedly stripping away traditional academic barriers.Soon after OpenAI launched ChatGPT, Google issued a 'Code Red' prompting Brin to rejion office.'As a computer scientist, I've never seen anything as exciting as all of the AI progress that's happened the last few years but it's kind of mindblowing. Every month there's like a new amazing capability and I'm doubly wowed as everybody else is that computers can do this. For me, I really got back into technical work because I just don't want to miss out on this as a computer scientist,' he said.

Quote of the day from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: 'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us' - The Economic Times Added: Jan 18, 2026
Quote of the day from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: 'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us' - The Economic Times
The quote âAll we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given usâ from J.R.R. Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings highlights the idea that while people cannot control the challenges they face, they can control their choices. Spoken by Gandalf to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring, the line reflects the storys core themes of responsibility, courage, and moral action.
In a world where uncertainty often feels overwhelming, one line from J.R.R. Tolkienâs The Lord of the Rings inspires something deep across generations. The quote, âAll we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us,â offers quiet clarity in times of doubt and pressure. Drawn from The Fellowship of the Ring, the line captures the heart of Tolkienâs storytelling and the quiet strength he believed ordinary individuals could show when faced with extraordinary circumstances. This line is spoken by the wizard Gandalf to Frodo Baggins at a moment of deep fear and frustration. Frodo is troubled by the burden of the One Ring and wishes that it had never come into his life. Gandalfâs response shifts the focus away from regret and toward responsibility. The meaning is clear: people cannot choose the challenges placed before them, but they can choose how they respond. The quote gently reminds readers that time itself is neutral, and it is human choice that gives it meaning. At a deeper level, the quote reflects Tolkienâs belief that action matters more than circumstance. Frodo does not seek greatness, power, or recognition. Yet he is asked to carry a burden that could shape the fate of Middle-earth. Gandalfâs words underline that moral decisions, even small ones made under pressure, can shape outcomes far beyond what an individual might expect. This idea runs throughout the story, reinforcing that courage often appears in quiet, personal choices rather than grand gestures. The Context Behind the QuoteThe line appears in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, written by J.R.R. Tolkien and first published in 1954. Tolkien, a scholar of language and mythology, began writing the story years earlier, with much of the work shaped during and after the World Wars. The emotional weight of living through global conflict is often reflected in his themes of loss, duty, and resilience. The Lord of the Rings follows Frodo Baggins, a hobbit tasked with destroying the One Ring, a powerful object created by the Dark Lord Sauron to control Middle-earth. Frodoâs journey from the peaceful Shire to the dangerous land of Mordor forms the backbone of the story. Along the way, he is joined by a fellowship made up of hobbits, men, an elf, a dwarf, and a wizard, each representing different cultures and values. Why the Message Still MattersThe quote stands out because it speaks beyond fantasy. Tolkien does not suggest that time can be controlled or reshaped. Instead, he places responsibility on individual choice. Whether facing personal hardship or larger social challenges, the line reminds readers that meaningful action is still possible, even when options feel limited. This message aligns closely with the broader themes of The Lord of the Rings, including courage, friendship, sacrifice, and the danger of power. Tolkien repeatedly shows that even the smallest characters can influence history through perseverance and moral clarity. Frodo and Samâs journey, in particular, reflects how endurance and loyalty can matter more than strength or status.

Quote of the day by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: âSoftware is eating the world, but AI is going to eatâŠâ - The Economic Times
Jensen Huang is a Taiwanese-American entrepreneur and engineer, best known as the co-founder, president, and CEO of NVIDIA, one of the worldâs most influential technology companies. Born in 1963, Huang helped establish NVIDIA in 1993 with a vision to revolutionize computer graphics. Under his leadership, the company pioneered the graphics processing unit (GPU), which transformed gaming, professional visualization, and high-performance computing. Huang is widely recognized for his signature leather jacket and for steering NVIDIA through decades of rapid technological change.Beyond graphics, Jensen Huang has been central to NVIDIAâs evolution into a global leader in artificial intelligence. He championed GPUs as the backbone of AI and deep learning, positioning NVIDIA at the heart of breakthroughs in data centers, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and generative AI. His long-term focus on innovation and platform-driven growth has made NVIDIA one of the most valuable companies in the world, while earning Huang a reputation as one of the most visionary CEOs in the technology industry.Quote of the dayâSoftware is eating the world, but AI is going to eat software.âMeaning of the quoteThe quote suggests a shift in how technology creates value. âSoftware is eating the worldâ describes how digital applications replaced traditional industries, from media and retail to banking and transport. Saying âAI is going to eat softwareâ goes a step further, arguing that artificial intelligence will now transform the software itself. Instead of humans explicitly writing rules and code for every task, AI systems will increasingly learn, adapt, and generate outcomes on their own.In practical terms, this means software may become less about fixed programs and more about intelligent systems that understand intent and context. AI can write code, personalize services, automate decisions, and continuously improve without manual updates. The quote captures a moment where AI is not just another layer of technology, but a force reshaping how software is built, used, and valued, much like software once reshaped the world around it.

Wealth quote of the day by Nassim Nicholas Taleb: Wealth quote of the day by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, âYou are rich if money you refuse tastes better than money you accept.â From Black Swan to antifragility: why Taleb says avoid the âfragile middleâ in volatile markets - The Economic Times
Wealth quote of the day by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, âYou are rich if money you refuse tastes better than money you accept.â Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the mind behind The Black Swan and Antifragile, offers a sharp definition of real wealth. He says you are rich when rejecting money feels better than taking it. Taleb spent over 20 years as a senior derivatives trader at firms like Credit Suisse and UBS. His breakthrough came during the 1987 "Black Monday" crash, where his tail-risk strategies netted millions while the market plummeted 22.6%.
Wealth quote of the day by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, âYou are rich if money you refuse tastes better than money you accept.â Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the LebaneseâAmerican author, risk theorist, and professor, is widely known for reshaping how we understand uncertainty, probability, and wealth in modern life. Talebâs famous aphorism â âYou are rich if and only if money you refuse tastes better than money you acceptâ â captures a radical idea: true wealth is not measured in dollars, stocks, or assets, but in freedom and choice. His work has influenced global thinkers, investors, and policymakers by reframing wealth through personal autonomy rather than accumulation. Born in Amioun, Lebanon in 1960, Talebâs early life bridged Middle Eastern upheaval and Western education. His familyâs prominence dimmed with the Lebanese Civil War, shaping his early exposure to uncertainty. After studying at the University of Paris and earning an MBA from Wharton, Taleb spent over two decades as a derivatives trader and risk analyst on Wall Street before pivoting to academia and writing. Talebâs works â including Fooled by Randomness, The Black Swan, Antifragile, and The Bed of Procrustes â form a philosophical and practical exploration of risk, randomness, and decisionâmaking under uncertainty. His ideas have earned global acclaim, selling millions of copies and shaping how investors think about risk and resilience. In his book Skin in the Game, Taleb asserts that true experts must suffer the consequences of their own advice to be credible. His own wealth is built on this integrity; he avoids the addiction of a monthly salary, which he compares to a dependency that limits free thought. By building a life where he can refuse lucrative but restrictive roles, Taleb protects his most valuable asset: his mind. Today, as a scientific advisor at Universa Investments, he continues to warn that global debt levels are a white swan of predictable fragility that requires a miracle to solve. In a world facing geopolitical tension â from U.S. sanctions on Iran over protest crackdowns to complex dynamics with Israel â Talebâs emphasis on optional decisions versus forced actions resonates beyond finance into broader strategic thinking. The wealth quote explained: Freedom over accumulationTalebâs aphorism on wealth comes from The Bed of Procrustes, a book composed of philosophical and practical aphorisms. The quote suggests that wealth is defined by the ability to refuse money, not just accumulate it. Real richness, Taleb argues, lies in rejecting offers or deals that compromise values, freedom, or longâterm wellbeing, even if they pay well in the short term. At its core, Talebâs definition opposes the narrow view that wealth equals net worth. He reframes wealth as freedom of choice, where the individual is not bound by necessity, urgency, or external pressure. In practical terms, a person who can walk away from a highâpaying but compromising job is objectively wealthier â in Talebâs terms â than someone who must accept it out of financial need. This idea aligns closely with optional decisionâmaking, a theme Taleb explores across his work. Optionality refers to having positive skewed choices â multiple favorable paths with limited downside â rather than being forced into single, highârisk commitments. This philosophy has practical implications in investing, career planning, and life decisions.2026 Barbell portfolio strategy: why Nassim Taleb says avoid the âfragile middleâ in volatile marketsIn 2026, extreme market volatility has revived interest in the Barbell Portfolio, a strategy championed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. The approach deliberately avoids the âfragile middleâ of moderate-risk assets such as traditional 60/40 stock-bond portfolios. Taleb argues these models fail when equities and bonds fall together, a scenario increasingly common amid high rates, inflation pressure, and record U.S. federal debt now exceeding $37 trillion. Instead, the barbell framework aims for antifragility by combining maximum safety with asymmetric upside. The defensive side, typically 85% to 90% of capital, is designed purely for survival. In 2026 conditions, Taleb favors short-term U.S. Treasury Bills with maturities under six months, which reduce duration and interest-rate risk compared with long bonds. Physical gold also plays a key role as a hedge against currency debasement and rising concerns over long-term dollar credibility. A small allocation to inflation-protected assets helps preserve purchasing power as deficit spending and debt servicing costs remain elevated. The remaining 10% to 15% is allocated to highly convex, high-upside opportunities. These include deep out-of-the-money S&P 500 put options, often described as tail-risk hedges, which can deliver outsized gains during sharp market crashes. Small, venture-style exposures to AI infrastructure, biotech innovation, or niche technology firms are also part of this bucket, where limited downside is paired with the possibility of exponential returns. Selective commodities, such as energy or rare earth metals, benefit from geopolitical disruption and supply-chain stress.Taleb warns that the biggest danger in 2026 lies in the âmiddle,â where investors hold corporate bonds and stable blue-chip stocks expecting balance. High corporate leverage and refinancing risk make these assets vulnerable during credit shocks, while their linear payoff offers no protection against deep drawdowns. The barbell strategy accepts uncertainty and prediction errors, choosing instead to be extremely conservative with most capital and aggressively opportunistic with a small portion, aligning risk exposure with todayâs unstable financial environment.Talebâs intellectual legacy: Black Swan, antifragility, and risk managementTalebâs influence stems from his debate on unpredictable events â the soâcalled âBlack Swanâ events that defy standard forecasting yet carry massive consequences. The Black Swan (2007) argues that rare, unforeseen events drive history more than predictable trends. This idea launched a paradigm shift in risk assessment, urging societies and investors to prepare for uncertainty, not assume stability. In Antifragile (2012), Taleb goes further, asserting that systems thrive on disorder â that some structures grow stronger when stressed, not weaker. This idea directly challenges traditional risk models that seek to minimize volatility. Instead, Taleb advocates for systems that benefit from stress, randomness, and disruption. Another key concept is âskin in the game,â which argues that decisionâmakers must feel the consequences of their choices. Taleb criticizes systems where those who take risks do not bear losses, a critique aimed at both corporate elites and policymakers. Collectively, these theories promote a mindset where cautious avoidance of harmful commitments and embracing wellâstructured risk lead to better wealth outcomes and personal resilience.Talebâs advice for investors and individualsFor investors, Talebâs wealth concept encourages building optionality and resilience rather than chasing linear returns. Traditional portfolios focus on maximizing expected value at all times â often exposing holders to tail risks that can wipe out gains. Instead, Taleb suggests strategies that limit downside risk while maintaining upside optionality, often referred to as barbell strategies (a mix of very safe and highly speculative positions). By refusing mediocre opportunities that offer weak returns with hidden exposures, investors maintain longâterm strategic freedom. This mindset also applies to personal wealth: valuing financial independence and freedom of choice over shortâterm gains leads to richer life outcomes.Talebâs approach isnât about avoiding all money; itâs about valuing independence and flexibility in decisions. Wealth isnât just the sum of your assets, but the degree to which your choices are unconstrained by necessity or fear.Relevance in todayâs global environmentIn early 2026, geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States have renewed global focus on risk, uncertainty, and strategic decisionâmaking. Recent U.S. sanctions on Iranian officials tied to protest crackdowns show how international policy decisions can both calibrate and escalate global risk. Amid tensions, global leaders work to avoid fullâscale conflict, balancing military options with diplomacy, while oil prices and regional security remain fragile. Talebâs insights into risk â emphasizing preparation, optionality, and avoiding commitments without clear upside â offer a framework for interpreting such international decisionâmaking. In global policy as in personal finance, avoiding costly commitments and maintaining flexibility helps nations and individuals navigate unpredictable futures. The lasting impact of Talebâs ideasNassim Nicholas Taleb remains a powerful voice in modern thought, blending philosophy, mathematics, and realâworld experience to challenge conventional wisdom about wealth, risk, and decisionâmaking. His quote â that real wealth comes from the ability to refuse money â reframes success as autonomy rather than accumulation. In a world marked by rapid change, unpredictable markets, and global tension, Talebâs work reminds readers that true riches may lie in the freedom to choose wisely, and to reject what diminishes freedom. From markets to geopolitics, his ideas continue to shape how we think about uncertainty and resilience in the 21st century.FAQs:Q: What does Nassim Nicholas Taleb mean by saying âYou are rich if money you refuse tastes better than money you acceptâ? A: Taleb defines true wealth as freedom and choice, not just accumulation. He suggests that rejecting deals or money that compromise autonomy is a sign of real richness. This concept aligns with his risk-management philosophy, emphasizing optionality and long-term resilience over short-term financial gains.Q: How can Talebâs wealth principles apply to investors and individuals today? A: Investors can use Talebâs ideas by building portfolios with limited downside risk and high optionality, such as barbell strategies. Individuals can focus on financial independence, rejecting opportunities that reduce freedom, and embracing choices that allow flexibility and long-term growth, particularly in volatile markets or uncertain global conditions.
