Quote of the day by George Orwell: 'Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it.' - The Economic Times Added: Jan 9, 2026
Quote of the day by George Orwell: 'Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it.' - The Economic Times
George Orwell, the famed writer, cautioned against the belief that each new generation is inherently superior. He highlighted that overconfidence, not ignorance, poses a significant danger. Orwell's insights suggest that while technology advances, human flaws like pride persist. Future generations will likely view our current beliefs with skepticism, a timeless lesson from Orwell's observations on power and self-deception.
This sharp, quietly unsettling line comes from George Orwell, a writer best remembered not for comfort, but for clarity. Orwell had a rare ability to notice patterns people prefer to ignore—and then phrase them so plainly that avoidance becomes impossible. This quote is one of those moments. It sounds almost casual, yet it carries a mirror.Who was George Orwell?Born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903, George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist, and critic whose work revolved around power, truth, language, and human self-deception. He is best known for 1984 and Animal Farm, but his essays are equally influential. Orwell did not see himself as a prophet; he saw himself as an observer. His writing was rooted in lived experience—colonialism, war, poverty, propaganda—and shaped by a deep distrust of absolute certainty, especially when it comes wrapped in moral superiority.Meaning of the quoteAt its core, this quote questions generational arrogance. Every new generation tends to believe it has finally “figured things out”—that it is more enlightened, more moral, more intelligent than those who came before. Orwell isn’t denying progress. He’s warning against smugness. The danger, he suggests, is not ignorance but overconfidence. When a generation assumes it is smarter by default, it stops listening. It dismisses history as outdated, mistakes past errors for stupidity rather than context, and overlooks the possibility that it, too, is shaped by blind spots. Orwell understood that technology changes faster than human nature. While tools evolve, flaws like pride, conformity, and self-justification remain stubbornly intact. In today’s world—where opinions are amplified instantly and certainty is rewarded—this quote feels especially relevant. Each era believes its information is better, its values purer, its judgments final. Orwell reminds us that future generations will likely look back at us with the same skepticism.Orwell’s other famous insightsMany of Orwell’s most quoted lines circle the same themes:“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful.”“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”Together, these quotes form a single message: progress without humility is fragile. Intelligence without self-doubt is dangerous. Orwell doesn’t ask us to distrust the past blindly—or worship it. He asks us to pause, reflect, and consider that believing we are smarter might be the oldest mistake of all.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that he has not ruled out impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if Democrats take back the House after the 2026 midterm elections. "Yeah, we haven't ruled anything in or anything out in terms of the proper way to bring about accountability," Jeffries told "All In" host Chris Hayes on MS NOW. Jeffries said Democratic lawmakers will discuss possible options early next week. "But what's clear to me is Kristi Noem is deeply unqualified, deeply unserious and deeply dangerous," Jeffries told Hayes. "She's a complete and total disgrace. She should never have been confirmed by the Senate in terms of holding this position." Jeffries accused Noem of having "slandered" Renee Nicole Macklin Good, the 37-year-old woman who was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Noem and other Trump administration officials accused Macklin Good of carrying out an act of "domestic terrorism" and claimed that she tried to run over an ICE officer with her car. "That agent should be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law," Jeffries continued. "And simultaneously, in Congress we need to decisively respond, and we will." He added that Congress needs to "limit or address decisively the lawlessness that the Department of Homeland Security has unleashed on the American people." "And we just have to continue to stay on the case on all of these things in order to begin the process of decisively ending this national nightmare in the United States," Jeffries said. Lawmakers on both sides criticized the shooting and Noem's handling of it. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said it was "unusual to have a senior law enforcement official ... draw a conclusion about an event where the scene was still being processed." "Either Secretary Noem has a lot of information that she will share with us in the coming days that formed a basis for advising the president, or she communicated too soon," Tillis said. House Homeland Security Committee Democrats called on their Republican colleagues to have Noem testify. In a letter to Chair Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), the panel's top ranking Democrat, Rep. Bennie Thompson (Miss.), said that Republicans who do not act over the shooting "are as culpable as President Trump himself for the harm he is causing our great country." California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Noem must resign. "Kristi Noem should resign — before more Americans are killed," Newsom's press office posted on social platform X. "She needs to be held to account." On Friday, the White House released video obtained by Alpha News showing the ICE officer's perspective before the shooting. Macklin Good has her window down as the officer walks around her car, and she is seen saying to him, "That’s alright dude, I’m not mad at you. I’m not mad at you." The officer circles the SUV as a woman heckles him and grabs the passenger-side door. Officers are then heard saying, "Get out of the car. Get out of the f‑‑‑king car." The video does not show the moments shots were fired, as the camera jostles and captures the sound of the shots. Her SUV can be seen careening down the road and captures the sound of her vehicle hitting a parked car. A man's voice can be heard in the video saying "F‑‑‑king b‑‑‑‑."
