Because thatâs what spiders need, more pointy bits.
In 2018, scientists described a new species of spider-like arachnid that lived 100 million years ago. Like modern spiders, it had spinnerets, a palpal organ for sperm transfer, and four paired walking limbs. Very much unlike modern spiders, however, it also had a tail. The study investigated two fossils, both of which were male, to explore an old evolutionary question: how did spiders evolve, and in what order did their characteristic traits appear? Using microscopy and 3D imaging, they were able to examine the fossilsâ minute details. It revealed they had spinnerets and silk spigots, just like modern spiders. It also had a narrow waist, known as a pedicel, but while the overall body plan was similar to that of a spider, it still had a segmented abdomen â something we donât see in spiders. Something else we donât see in spiders is the long, whip-like appendage attached to its rear. Itâs thought to represent a previously unrecognized lineage of tailed spiders, or spider-like creatures. We see similar structures in todayâs whip scorpions, and it has many potential uses. The tail may have been a sensory organ for navigating the environment, or could have been used as part of a defensive response to freak out would-be predators. Alternatively, it may have been a means of distraction, and could even have functioned like the tail of a lizard in breaking off as an escape strategy. As for the big question: is it a spider? The authors believe itâs either the earliest known branch of true spiders, or a very close sister group. The discovery marked a big chapter in spidersâ evolutionary history, demonstrating that spider traits emerged like a mosaic, blending old with new. Hence the species name, Chimerarachne yingi, as in chimera. That nuance probably isnât going to make it any more popular among arachnophobes, however.

âThe prolonged agony endured for days,â say researchers.
The occupant of one of the most lavish Paleolithic burials ever discovered may have died one of the most agonizing deaths in all of human history. Nicknamed âIl Principeâ (âThe Princeâ), the teenage boy found inside the grave died a few days after having his face and chest ripped apart by a large predator, which researchers suspect was probably a bear. Originally discovered in 1942 in the Arene Candide Cave in northern Italy, the burial has been dated to between 27,900 and 27,300 years ago, placing it in the Gravettian period of the Upper Paleolithic. Alongside the mangled skeleton, archaeologists found an array of opulent grave goods, including hundreds of pierced shells, carved antlers, mammoth ivory pendants, and a flint blade that researchers believe was a symbol of prestige. Ranking among the most ornate burials of the Gravettian era, the grave was initially interpreted as a sign of high social status, earning its adolescent inhabitant his royal nickname. However, just as striking as these material offerings were the boyâs injuries, which included a smashed collarbone and a gaping hole in his jaw. Reanalyzing the skeleton, the authors of a new study reveal that The Prince also suffered various fractures to his skull, teeth, and neck, as well as a punctured fibula. âThe overall traumatic pattern observed in this individual resembles injuries typically documented in modern motor vehicle accidents, but in the prehistoric context examined here is more plausibly attributed to a large animal mauling, likely by a bear,â write the researchers. Ruling out a series of other possible explanations, the authors explain that Il Principe lacks the kind of arm and leg fractures that would be expected if he had fallen from a height, while interpersonal violence would unlikely have wiped out so much of the bone in his jaw and shoulder. Given all the hazards faced by prehistoric hunter-gatherers, therefore, an animal attack seems by far the most likely cause of these shocking injuries. Based on the fauna that occupied northern Italy at the time, the researchers suggest that the lesions may have been the work of a brown bear, a cave bear, a leopard, or a cave lion. And while they canât say with any certainty which of these animals was the culprit, they note that the pattern of the injuries does appear more consistent with a bear mauling than a feline attack. Amazingly, however, the bones show early signs of healing, indicating that The Prince lived for another two to three days following the encounter. This suggests that the furry assailant somehow failed to sever the boyâs jugular vein or carotid or subclavian arteries, which would have caused him to rapidly bleed to death. Instead, Il Principe was probably left writhing in agony until he eventually expired from organ failure, internal hemorrhaging, or severe brain injuries. Given the impact this disturbing scene would have made on The Princeâs community, the study authors suggest that the exceptional grave goods found alongside the body may in fact represent a âritual sanctioningâ of this scarring episode rather than royal rank. In other words, the teenager may not have held a high social status after all, but may have received an over-the-top burial as part of an attempt to somehow bring an end to the horrific ordeal. According to the researchers, this theory is supported by the fact that all of the most lavish burials from the Gravettian period involve people displaying unusual injuries or disfigurements. âThis pattern has led to the hypothesis that formal burial was afforded based on the necessity to ritually contain and sanction these 'exceptional events and exceptional people',â they write. The study is published in the Journal of Anthropological Sciences.

When George Clooney speaks, people listen. And reporters uncritically share it. Not aymore. There's a new sheriff in town named Bari Weiss.
Bari Weiss has sent a chill down the spine of Progressive USA.
How?
She's a Center-Left lesbian who, after being cruelly attacked by fellow New York Times employees for being a free thinker, created a media empire in a stunningly short amount of time.

Then, when Weiss' new venture proved profitable, she sold it to Paramount and agreed to personally overhaul the company's CBS News franchise.
Her hand-picked anchor, Tony Dokoupil, kicked off his tenure by admitting the news media has lost its way. The modern reporter is disconnected from the average American and deserves much of the criticism leveled against it, he added.

All of the above has made Weiss an enemy of both the Left and Legacy Media outlets (but we repeat ourselves). The far-Left Entertainment Weekly just dubbed Weiss a "conservative," even though it rarely, if ever, uses ideological labels for Hollywood elite.
And, more importantly, how is Weiss conservative again?
The Left's panic over Weiss taking over CBS News, captured in a public meltdown over a spiked "60 Minutes" story, came to a head courtesy of a handsome Oscar winner.
George Clooney called Weiss out by name, saying she's "dismantling" CBS News.
Typically, when a celebrity takes a progressive stand, the story circulates around the digital ecosystem. Legacy Media outlets regurgitate the charges, putting a not-so-subtle positive spin on the comments.
Words like "passionate" and "fiery" sneak into the reportage. And it more or less ends there. No journalist with access to someone like Clooney will challenge them on what was said.
Except Weiss ignored this media playbook.

She's a big enough pop culture voice now that she can directly address a Clooney type and know her message will be received. Heck, she oversees a broadcast news network, one of the biggest megaphones possible.
That explains the following Weiss response to Clooney's accusations. âBonjour, Mr. Clooney! Big fan of your work. It sounds like youâd like to learn more about ours,â Weiss said in an email statement that CBS parent company Paramount Skydance shared with The Post on Tuesday. âThis is an open invitation to visit the CBS Broadcast Center, where Iâm spending the holidays working to relaunch the Evening News with my colleagues. Tune in January 5.â The "bonjour" reference targets the Clooneys fleeing America for France, a dig at a patriot who loves his country so much he decided to live elsewhere.
That's just a surface-level taunt, but a powerful one. The real message is clear.
You can shoot your mouth off and the rest of the media will share it far and wide. But ... if you want to have an adult conversation, and potentially a healthy debate, you're welcome to join me.
You might even have a change of heart after hearing opinions you oh, so rarely hear.
Will Clooney take the bait? Don't bet on it.
Either way, the bigger implications are obvious. If there's now a major news network that tells it like it is, celebrities will have one less place where their views are left unchallenged.
