AI-Integrated programming is emerging as a foundational paradigm for building intelligent systems with large language models (LLMs). Recent approaches such as Meaning Typed Programming (MTP) automate prompt generation by leveraging the semantics already present in code. However, many real-world applications depend on contextual cues, developer intent, and domain-specific reasoning that extend beyond what static code semantics alone can express. To address this limitation, we introduce Semantic Engineering, a lightweight method for enriching program semantics so that LLM-based systems can more accurately reflect developer intent without requiring full manual prompt design. We present Semantic Context Annotations (SemTexts), a language-level mechanism that allows developers to embed natural-language context directly into program constructs. Integrated into the Jac programming language, Semantic Engineering extends MTP to incorporate these enriched semantics during prompt generation. We further introduce a benchmark suite designed to reflect realistic AI-Integrated application scenarios. Our evaluation shows that Semantic Engineering substantially improves prompt fidelity, achieving performance comparable to Prompt Engineering while requiring significantly less developer effort.

The simulation hypothesis — the idea that our universe might be an artificial construct running on some advanced alien computer — has long captured the public imagination. Yet most arguments about it rest on intuition rather than clear definitions, and few attempts have been made to formally spell out what “simulation” even means. In a new paper, SFI Professor David Wolpert introduces a mathematically precise framework for what it would mean for one universe to simulate another — and shows that several longstanding claims about simulations break down once the concept is defined rigorously.

President Trump said Monday the new White House ballroom he tore down the East Wing to build will have a "drone-free roof." The president made the remarks while at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump was criticizing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell when he started talking about the ballroom, a pet project of his expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, which he says will come from private donations. "Now, it’s bigger than I told you. It’s, you know — after realizing we’re gonna do the inauguration in that building," Trump said. "It’s got all bulletproof glass, it’s got all drone — they call it drone-free roof, so drones won’t touch it. It’s a big, beautiful, safe building." The Hill has reached out to the White House for further comment. Trump is expected to provide plans for the White House's ballroom's construction in January. This presentation is typically seen as the first step in a review of a National Capital Planning Commission project. The administration announced the ballroom shortly before the controversial demolition on the historic East Wing began. Estimates on how much construction would cost have varied. Initially, the ballroom would be $250 million, then $300 million. Last week, Trump said it will cost $400 million. "For 150 years they wanted a ballroom, and we’re giving them — myself and donors are giving them, free of charge for nothing — we’re donating a building that’s approximately $400 million," Trump said at a Hanukkah event at the White House. "I think I’ll do it for less. But it’s [$400 million]. I should do it for less. I will do it for less." Construction on the ballroom is expected to be completed by 2028. Trump previously swapped lead architects to oversee the work done on the ballroom, tapping Shalom Baranes to be the new architect of the project. The demolition and ballroom project have been met with outcry, with the Clintons and Obamas among those voicing criticism about making major changes to "The People's House." Critics argued the administration skirted laws that require consultation with the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts before making significant White House changes. The area where the East Wing once stood was a source of controversy since early in the executive mansion's history. Former President Jefferson ordered colonnades be added to the western and eastern sides of the mansion. Newspaper editorials were critical of the style of the colonnades, claiming the structures showed Jefferson's "aristocratic tendencies."
