Podcaster Joe Rogan slammed President Trump for his remarks about the death of Hollywood director Rob Reiner. âThe Rob Reiner thing is not funny, right? And thatâs like the same thing. Itâs the same kind of thinking. And when you see it with no empathy, thatâs when itâs hard to like [him],â Rogan said of Trump during Thursday's episode of âThe Joe Rogan Experience.â His guest, comedian Shane Gillis, chimed in and said, âI wish he could apologize. I know he canât and he wonât.â The twoâs comments echo other statements condemning the presidentâs post in the aftermath of the death of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The Reiners' son Nick was eventually arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Moments after news of Rob Reinerâs passing broke, Trump said heâd died âdue to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.â In a post on the social platform X, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), a vocal Trump critic, called the president's comments âinappropriate and disrespectful.â Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) noted Nick Reinerâs long history with drug abuse, calling the deaths âa family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.â Rob Reiner was a donor for the Democratic Party and frequently voiced his opposition to Trump. âMake no mistake. We have a year before this country becomes a full on autocracy and democracy completely leaves us,â Reiner told the MSNBC, now known as MS NOW, in September. In an interview with The Guardian last year, Reiner called Trump âa criminalâ who âbasically lies every minute of his life.â Still, Rogan said Trumpâs remarks about his passing was uncalled for. âItâs no different than people that were celebrating when Charlie Kirk got shot. Itâs same kind of thing,â Rogan said of Trumpâs comments. The podcaster noted that former President Obama would have faced heavy backlash for sharing a similar statement. âThat would be crazy,â Rogan said. âIt just shows you how crazy it is the way Trump thinks and talks.â

Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg lays down âlaptop ruleâ to spot if AI can replace your job | Mint Added: Dec 27, 2025
Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg lays down âlaptop ruleâ to spot if AI can replace your job | Mint
Site: mint
Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg introduced a new laptop rule to identify the jobs that are highly cognitive in nature and are at risk of being wiped out by AI.
Google DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg has warned about the changes that AI may bring to the workforce. The senior AI leader outlined a new ârule of thumbâ to identify whether the job you are doing could be easily replicated by AI.In an interaction with Professor Hannah Fry, Legg laid down what he calls the âLaptop Ruleâ, noting that if a job can be performed entirely using a screen, keyboard, camera, speaker, microphone, and mouse, it is cognitive in nature and therefore replicable by AI.âIf you can do the job remotely over the internet just using a laptop, then it's probably very much cognitive work,â Legg noted. âIf you're in that category, I think that advanced AI will be able to operate in that space to some extent.âHowever, Legg also pointed out that there is a âhuman aspectâ to some forms of cognitive work that could protect these jobs. He took the example of influencers, whose work can be done completely remotely but who possess a distinct personality or human connection, which makes it harder for AI to fully replace them. When prompted by the interviewer that his assessment would mean AI could end up threatening a large number of jobs across society, Legg said, âWe need people who study all these different aspects of society to take AGI seriously.ââAnd my impression is that a lot of these people are not,â he added.âI think there's an enormous opportunity here. But just like any revolution, like the Industrial Revolution or anything else, it's complicated. It has all kinds of effects on society in all kinds of ways. And to get the benefits of that while minimizing the risks and the costs, we need to navigate this carefully. And at the moment, I think nowhere near enough people are thinking about what AGI means for this particular issue, and we need a lot more people doing that,â he further noted. When will AGI be reached?Legg also stuck to his long-standing prediction that there is a 50:50 chance that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be reached by 2028. However, he clarified that this would be a form of âminimal AGIâ, and that fully developed AGI is still several years away, though it could be achieved within a decade. For context, AGI is believed to be a hypothetical stage in AI development where systems achieve intelligence comparable to humans across most, if not all, tasks. There is no universally accepted definition of AGI within the AI community, nor is there a fixed timeline for when it will be achieved. While figures like Elon Musk and Legg believe it could be just a few years away, others, such as former Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun, have warned that simply scaling large language models (LLMs) will never lead to AGI. That said, there is a growing belief within the AI world that once AGI is achieved, it could fundamentally reshape the workforce. Some, like Musk, believe it could usher in an era of âuniversal high income,â while others are far less optimistic about its societal impact.

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "godfather" of artificial intelligence, said he's "more worried" about the risks of AI today than he was two years ago, when he left his post at Google and began speaking freely about the dangers of the fast-developing technology. In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Hinton addressed his broader concerns about AI, specifically the risk that the technology could outsmart humans. "I'm probably more worried," Hinton said when asked to compare his level of concern today to two years ago. "It's progressed even faster than I thought." "In particular, it's got better at doing things like reasoning and also at things like deceiving people," he continued. Pressed to expand on the concern, Hinton said, "An AI, to achieve the goals you give it, wants to stay in existence, and if it believes you're trying to get rid of it, it will make plans to deceive you, so you don't get rid of it." Hinton noted there are "a lot of wonderful effects of AI," saying he thinks it will make health care and education better and can help address climate change. "But along with those wonderful things come some scary things," he said. "And I don't think people are putting enough work into how we can mitigate those scary things." He said he's concerned that, in 2026, AI will begin to have "the capabilities to replace many, many jobs," in about seven months or so, noting it can perform tasks at consistently faster speeds.

Quote of the day by Epictetus: âThere is only one way to happiness and that is to stop worrying about things which are beyond the power or our willâ - The Economic Times Added: Dec 28, 2025
Quote of the day by Epictetus: âThere is only one way to happiness and that is to stop worrying about things which are beyond the power or our willâ - The Economic Times
Born into slavery, Epictetus became a pivotal Stoic philosopher, emphasizing resilience and inner freedom. His teachings highlight that true happiness stems from accepting what is beyond our control. He taught that human rationality allows us to judge perceptions, making us responsible for our thoughts and actions, ultimately leading to inner peace.
Born into enslavement, Epictetus rose to become one of the most influential Stoic thinkers in ancient Greece. His life itself stood as a testament to the ideas he later taughtâideas rooted in resilience, inner freedom, and moral clarity. Despite beginning his existence without social power or autonomy, he developed a philosophy that would shape ethical thinking for centuries. Among his most remembered reflections is the line: âThere is only one way to happiness and that is to stop worrying about things which are beyond the power or our willâŚâ This statement captures the heart of his worldview and continues to resonate across generations. The Stoic View of Human NatureAt the center of Epictetusâs philosophy lies a distinct understanding of what it means to be human. Like other Stoics, he viewed human beings as mortal yet rational creatures. Rationality, in his framework, is not merely intelligence but the ability to consciously evaluate perceptions. Humans do not simply react to the world; they possess the power to pause, reflect, and judge whether what they perceive is accurate or misleading. This reflective engagement with experience sets humanity apart from animals, who respond instinctively to appearances without examining their truth.Epictetus received his training in Stoic thought under the guidance of Musonius Rufus. After gaining his freedom from slavery, he devoted himself fully to teaching philosophy. Near the close of the first century, Emperor Domitian ordered philosophers to leave Rome, prompting Epictetus to relocate and establish his own philosophical school in Nicopolis. There, he shaped a distinctive approach that emphasized philosophy as a practical guide for daily living rather than an abstract intellectual pursuit. According to Epictetus, the events and circumstances of the external world lie outside human command. Because they cannot be controlled, he maintained that people should meet whatever life presents with composure, acceptance, and emotional restraint, focusing their energy instead on mastering their own judgments and responses.Impressions, Assent, and Moral ResponsibilityWhile animals and humans alike receive impressions from the external world, Epictetus emphasized that humans uniquely possess the ability to grant or deny assent to those impressions. This faculty allows individuals to decide how they interpret events and how they respond emotionally and ethically. Because of this capacity, people are responsible for their actions and mental states. Accountability, in Epictetusâs view, is inseparable from the power of choice, making ethical self-governance both possible and necessary.126213400 Volition as the Core of FreedomEpictetus frequently explored the concept of prohairesis, a term he used to describe the inherent capacity for choice rather than individual decisions themselves. Often translated as volition, this inner faculty is, according to him, naturally unhindered. Because no external force can truly dominate oneâs will, freedom becomes an essential and inborn human quality. The very act of choosing implies independence from coercion; otherwise, it would not qualify as a choice at all. This understanding sharply distinguishes humans from even the most advanced animals, who lack reflective self-direction.Inner Peace Through Revaluing the External WorldBy reassessing the importance of external objects and circumstances, Epictetus believed individuals could achieve deep emotional stability. Feelings such as sorrow, fear, jealousy, craving, and persistent worry arise from the mistaken belief that fulfillment depends on factors outside oneself. He rejected the notion that emotions are imposed by fate or inner compulsions beyond control. Instead, he argued that emotional turmoil stems from faulty judgments, which can be corrected through disciplined reasoning.126158472 Education, Hardship, and LiberationEpictetus developed an early devotion to philosophy and, with his masterâs consent, studied under the Stoic teacher Musonius Rufus. This education elevated his standing despite his enslaved status. At some point in his life, he became physically disabled; some accounts attribute this to deliberate cruelty, while others suggest a lifelong condition. After the death of Emperor Nero in AD 68, Epictetus gained his freedom and began teaching in Rome. When philosophers were later expelled by Emperor Domitian, he relocated to Nicopolis in Greece, where he established a school that attracted devoted students.126120414 A Life of Simplicity and CompassionTrue to his teachings, Epictetus lived modestly, owning very little and embracing simplicity. For much of his life, he lived alone, but in old age, he took in the child of a deceased friend who would otherwise have been abandoned. His life reflected his philosophy: freedom rooted not in possessions or status, but in mastery over oneâs own mind and choices. What Is Stoicism?Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy focused on building inner strength, self-control, and clarity of mind. Founded by Zeno of Citium around the 3rd century BCE, it teaches that peace comes from accepting what we cannot control and focusing on what we canâour thoughts, actions, and choices. Stoicism emphasizes living in harmony with reason and nature, practicing virtues like wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. By managing emotions and responding calmly to challenges, Stoicism helps individuals develop resilience, reduce stress, and live a meaningful, disciplined life.
