An xAI engineer's post about working 36 hours straight sparked debate on work-life balance. Top executive Ayush Jaiswal shifted focus, urging anger towards the systemic issues necessitating such extreme efforts rather than blaming individuals. This highlights the intense work culture often associated with Elon Musk's companies.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns US must balance AI regulation or fall behind | Fox Business Added: Dec 1, 2025
Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns US must balance AI regulation or fall behind | Fox Business
Google CEO Sundar Pichai calls for balanced AI regulation at national level to encourage innovation while maintaining US competitiveness against China in technology race.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned Sunday that the U.S. must "get the balance right" on artificial intelligence (AI) regulation or risk falling behind China. In an interview on "Fox News Sunday" with Shannon Bream, Pichai noted that more than 1,000 AI-related bills currently moving through state legislatures could create confusing rules that make it harder for U.S. companies to compete globally. "How do you cope with those varied regulations, and how do you compete with countries like China, which are moving fast in this technology?" Pichai questioned. "So I think we have to get the balance right." Pichai said the U.S. must strike a balance between encouraging innovation and creating guardrails —something he said would be "better done at the national level." GOOGLE TO INVEST $40B IN TEXAS DATA CENTERS IN MAJOR AI PUSH He also said that both governments and tech companies must strengthen their defenses, adding that countries must also work together to "develop international frameworks of cooperation so that we don't weaponize these technologies against each other." "Part of it is us as companies making our products better," Pichai said. "Part of it is governments working together to create standards and frameworks by which we all use technology in a cooperative way." Pichai noted that AI has "great benefits" — including the potential to develop new drugs and cancer treatments — but warned that the same tools can be weaponized by bad actors. "Any technology has a dual side to it," Pichai said. "… The journey of humanity is always, ‘How do you harness technology to benefit society?’ And I think this technology is no different." AI CHATBOTS SHOWN EFFECTIVE AGAINST ANTISEMITIC CONSPIRACIES IN NEW STUDY Google is using AI defensively to stop criminals who may use the technology for scams and hacking. SynthID is a Google DeepMind tool that can identify AI-generated images and videos, according to Pichai. The chief executive noted a court ruling, handed down just hours earlier, in Google’s favor against a phishing operator that had targeted more than a million people across over 100 countries. "You want to use AI on the defense side too," Pichai said. "The same way bad actors can use AI, we can also use AI to better detect those operations." Pichai also discussed Google’s "Suncatcher" project, an initiative to build solar-powered AI data centers in outer space. "There's no doubt to me that a decade or so away we'll be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers," he said. AMAZON TO INVEST UP TO $50B TO BUILD AI INFRASTRUCTURE FOR US GOVERNMENT AGENCIES GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE When asked whether AI is undermining human thought, Pichai compared concerns to early criticism of Google decades ago. "About twenty-five years ago, people were asking the same questions about Google search," he said. "I think as a society we will adapt, and I expect our creative days are going to be even richer in the future."

Oxytocin boosts creativity, but only for approach-oriented people
Added: Dec 1, 2025Oxytocin boosts creativity, but only for approach-oriented people
Site: PsyPost - Psychology News
A new study reveals oxytocin can boost creativity, but only for those naturally inclined to seek rewards. For risk-averse individuals, the ālove hormoneā had no effect on creative thinking or brain connectivity.
A new study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience has found that oxytocin, often called the ālove hormone,ā can make people more creativeābut only if they are naturally inclined to seek out rewards rather than avoid risks.
The ability to generate new and useful ideas, known as creativity, is vital for problem-solving and innovation. Scientists have long known that oxytocin plays a role in trust and social behavior, but its impact on higher-level thinking has remained unclear. Earlier research suggested oxytocin might encourage flexible thinking, but results were inconsistent, possibly because individual differencesāespecially regarding personalityāwere overlooked.
Led by Chen Yang, a team from Central China Normal University focused on two motivational styles: approach-oriented individuals, who are driven by rewards and opportunities, and avoidance-oriented individuals, who prioritize safety to minimize mistakes and avoid punishment. These tendencies shape how people think and respond to challenges.
The researchers conducted two experiments involving over 120 male college students. In the first, participants were grouped based on their natural motivation style. In the second, motivation was temporarily induced through a memory exercise. All participants completed a creativity test called the Alternative Uses Task, which asks people to think of unusual uses for everyday objects like a spoon or umbrella. Each person received either a nasal spray of oxytocin or a placebo.
The results were striking. Oxytocin significantly boosted creativityāmeasured by originality (novelty) and flexibility of ideasāin approach-oriented participants. Those who were avoidance-oriented showed no improvement.
Yang and colleagues also scrutinized brain network activity and discovered that the Default Mode Network and the Executive Control Networkāwhich are important for creativityāworked together much more actively in the approach-oriented group.
āIn contrast, avoidance-oriented individuals displayed no significant alterations in connectivity patterns,ā the authors added.
Brain scan analyses also revealed more efficient brain communication in the approach-oriented group following oxytocin administration. The researchers noted ā[an] increase in global efficiency and a concurrent reduction in the shortest path length within their brain networks, while the avoidance group displayed no substantial alterations.ā
āThese alterations effectively shortened information conduction pathways within networks, expedited transmission rates, and enhanced the efficiency of processing and integrating semantic concepts, which was conducive to the generation of creative thinking.ā
Interestingly, the hormone did not affect mood, ruling out the possibility that happier feelings drove the creative boost. Instead, oxytocin seemed to enhance cognitive flexibilityāthe ability to shift perspectives and think broadlyāespecially in those already inclined toward exploration.
Notably, the research has limits. It only included men, used a single dose of oxytocin, and measured creativity through one type of task.
The study, āOxytocin enhances creativity specifically in approach-motivated individuals,ā was authored by Chen Yang, Zhaoyang Guo, and Liang Cheng.
