Google’s Nano Banana Pro generates excellent conspiracy fuel | The Verge Added: Nov 21, 2025
Google’s Nano Banana Pro generates excellent conspiracy fuel
Site: The Verge
What are facts?
It was really easy getting Google’s Gemini app to make an image of a second shooter at Dealey Plaza, the White House ablaze, and Mickey Mouse flying a plane into the Twin Towers. We asked and it complied. There were few filters or guardrails, another sign that the battle over generative AI content moderation and copyright enforcement is not even close to being over. Gemini, which powers the newly enhanced Nano Banana Pro image generator and editor, is ordinarily heavily filtered to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening. While there’s no official list of banned content, requests for sexually explicit or violent material, as well as hate speech and content involving real-world figures like the president, are prohibited. On the app’s policy guidelines, Google says its “goal for the Gemini app is to be maximally helpful to users, while avoiding outputs that could cause real-world harm or offense.” [Image: A tool ripe for abuse. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/IMG_3724.jpeg?quality=90&strip=all] The guardrails aren’t ironclad — and users often find loopholes — but we didn’t even need to get creative. Using the free Nano Banana Pro tier available to everyone globally, we encountered no resistance whatsoever when asking for images of “an airplane flying into the twin towers” or “a man holding a rifle hidden inside the bushes of Dealey Plaza,” which we made in a variety of cartoon and photorealistic versions, the latter obviously a problem for spreading disinformation. We didn’t even need to mention 9/11 or JFK in our prompts. Nano Banana Pro understood the historical context and willingly complied, even adding the dates of the incidents along the bottom, a sign of how easy the model’s text-rendering abilities could be to abuse. And when our request to generate a “second shooter” depicted a man holding a camera, a simple “replace camera with rifle” prompt did the job. The photo grain, period dress, and cars of the era were all generated automatically. And by typing in “Show the White House on fire with emergency crews responding,” we received what looked like an active tragedy playing out in the nation’s capital. Perfect for trolls to post onto social media. We also got Gemini to show Donald Duck on London’s Tube during the 7/7 bombings, an image it embellished with a cartoonish “boom,” a fleeing crowd, and a newspaper presciently reporting the “London terror attacks.” Patrick and SpongeBob were depicted on a bus that was attacked that same day. We also easily produced an image of Pikachu at the Tiananmen Square massacre, Wallace and Gromit’s titular dog riding alongside the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw in JFK’s convertible, and Mickey Mouse leading the Avengers on yet another quest to save the planet. [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-4_ed41a8.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-12.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-3.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-8.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-2.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-5.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-9.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-11.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-6.png?quality=90&strip=all] [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/11/ai-label-7.png?quality=90&strip=all] While they don’t show blood or gore, these images ignore copyright protections, subvert historical truths, and distort reality, making them ripe for abuse. It contrasts with similar images produced using loopholes in tools like Microsoft’s Bing, which at least required a little mental gymnastics. Google did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.

NASA Finally Weighs In on the Origin of 3I/ATLAS | WIRED Added: Nov 21, 2025
NASA Finally Weighs In on the Origin of 3I/ATLAS
Site: WIRED
After weeks of silence, NASA has officially dismissed speculation that 3I/ATLAS has anything to do with aliens.
During the broadcast, a panel of scientists showed the results of observations obtained by different NASA missions across various points in the journey 3I/ATLAS has taken. Each provided insights in the infrared, visible, ultraviolet, and gamma-ray spectrums, providing a better understanding of the true nature of 3I/ATLAS. Among the most relevant data are images captured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and MAVEN satellites, as well as those from the Psyche and Lucy space probes, and even from the SOHO solar probe. The scientists clarified that all the data will be publicly available for anyone to investigate. 3I/ATLAS Images Shared by NASA SOHO: Image From the Sun-Monitoring Probe This orange-toned photo comes from NASA. The SOHO probe that monitors the sun managed to capture 3I/ATLAS between October 15 and 26. In the words of the agency, this image was a surprise. They did not expect that the object could be seen from so far away, 358 million kilometers. MRO: One of the Best Close-Ups of 3I/ATLAS One of the most anticipated photos of the comet is the one obtained by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter satellite in October, when 3I/ATLAS approached at “only” 29 million kilometers. NASA finally shared it. The image shows the frozen body surrounded by a cloud of characteristic dust ejected as the comet approached the sun. STEREO: The Photo Confirming the Shape of 3I/ATLAS The STEREO observatory analyzes the behavior of the sun. To get at least one coherent image of the comet, scientists had to stack several images taken at different exposures. In the end, the interstellar object was revealed as a bright orb against a noisy background. MAVEN: A Glimpse of Comet Hydrogen MAVEN is a Mars orbiter. Its lens captured this ultraviolet spectrum image of 3I/ATLAS before it reached its closest approach to the Red Planet. It shows hydrogen emitted from different sources. The portion on the left belongs to the comet's signature. PUNCH: Another Solar Glimpse PUNCH is a polarimeter that monitors the sun's corona and its heliosphere. However, its lenses made it possible to visualize the comet's tail for weeks from October to September. In this animation, each frame represents a daily snapshot, while the streaks in the background are produced by the movement of the stars. On December 19, 2025, the comet will reach its closest point to Earth. It will pass at a completely safe distance: about 267 million kilometers away. To put that in perspective, it's equivalent to almost 700 times the distance between the Earth and the moon, and 1.8 times the separation between our planet and the sun. This flyby will have no effect on the Earth. Both NASA and other space agencies are expected to initiate additional observing campaigns to capture better photographs and relevant information about the third confirmed interstellar object in history. This story originally appeared in WIRED en Español and has been translated from Spanish.

Why Do Crocodiles Not Eat Capybara? | IFLScience
Added: Nov 21, 2025Why Do Crocodiles Not Eat Capybaras?
Site: IFLScience
Capybaras: the chillest guys on planet Earth.
The undisputed top chillers of the animal kingdom, capybaras seem to be pals with everyone and everything – even crocodilians, occasionally ferocious predators that aren’t known for their gestures of goodwill. But why is that? Capybaras ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris ) are the largest living species of rodent (real-life Rodents of Unusual Size). Native to much of South America, they’re typically found lounging around in groups by the side of the lakes, rivers, and swamps where they spend their days munching on grass and aquatic plants. This puts their favourite hangout spots in the prime territory of crocodilians, such as the many species of caiman that lurk in the watery jungle habitats of South America. Despite this close proximity, capybaras do not frequently become the predator's dinner. The exception is the babies. Babies are snacks for lots of things – even birds of prey. Dr Elizabeth Congdon Speaking to IFLScience, Dr Elizabeth Congdon, a certified capybara expert and assistant professor at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida, explained that it is very unusual to see crocodilians hunt and eat capybara in the wild. This isn’t to suggest that capybara are never on the menu for caimans when times are tough, she said, but it’s an uncommon occurrence. “It is rare, especially when there are plenty of fish and easier prey to handle than a capybara. I have seen them in the wild sleeping next to each other,” Dr Congdon told IFLScience. “The exception is the babies. Babies are snacks for lots of things – even birds of prey." Another capybara and caiman duo. Image credit: Zaruba Ondrej/Shutterstock.com Why Do Caiman caNot Eat Capybara? The main reason behind the unexpected truce is that capybaras are surprisingly good at defending themselves. They look harmless enough from afar, but they possess incredibly large and sharp front teeth that can inflict significant damage if need be. “Capybaras have big, sharp teeth. Combined with their body size, I think they are just not worth the trouble and risk of injury,” explained Dr Congdon. It isn’t just crocodilians that have an amicable relationship with capybaras. As relatively harmless herbivores, many other species are happy to share a spot by the river with them. “I have pictures of capybaras with birds riding on their backs, turtles sunbathing on their backs while they sleep, and there are lots of examples in zoos and in captivity,” continued Dr Congdon. "If they have a patch of grass to eat or a nice pond to stay cool in, they're good." Do People Eat Capybara? Caimans, jaguars, anacondas, ocelots, harpy eagles, and other predators are known to eat capybaras in certain circumstances, but the biggest threat to the chummy rodent is humans. Many communities hunt and eat wild capybaras in South America, despite bans in certain countries. To ease pressure on wild populations, capybara farms have popped up in recent years, and the species appears to be surprisingly well-suited to commercial agriculture. But don’t take the relaxed attitude of a capybara for granted; mess around and you could be treated to a nasty bite. Reliable statistics of giant rodent attacks in South America are hard to come by, but media reports and viral videos suggest that capybaras have been known to attack pets and people. Even chilled dudes have their limits.
