Google updates its weather forecasts with a new AI model

    Site: The Verge

It says its experimental models are ready for prime time.

Google debuted a new and improved AI weather model today that will be incorporated into popular products like Search, Gemini, and Pixel phones.  The company’s AI-enhanced forecasts have proven themselves to be quite accurate so far. AI weather models have also been able to make predictions faster and more efficiently than conventional physics-based models. Until now, Google’s work in this area has been mostly experimental. Now, it’s making those predictions a selling point for Google products and services.  “We’re taking it out of the lab and really putting it into the hands of users in more ways than we have before and sort of shedding off the experimental kind of designation because we have confidence that our forecasts are really quite effective and quite useful,” Peter Battaglia, senior director of research and sustainability at Google DeepMind, said in a briefing with reporters.   The new AI model, WeatherNext 2, can generate forecasts eight times faster than Google’s previous model, and is also more accurate in predicting 99.9 percent of variables like temperature or wind. WeatherNext 2 can pump out hundreds of potential outcomes from a particular starting point. It takes less than a minute using one of Google’s TPU chips to make a prediction, which the company says would typically take several hours to accomplish using physics-based models on a supercomputer.  Those conventional models are computationally intensive because they’re essentially attempting to re-create the complicated physics of the atmosphere to produce forecasts. AI models, in contrast, try to discern patterns out of historical weather data in order to predict future outcomes.  Google was able to streamline its process by using a strategy it calls a Functional Generative Network (FGN) in WeatherNext 2. Older AI weather models still required repeated processing to generate one forecast. FGN is more efficient because it incorporates noise — or targeted randomness — into the model each time it’s provided an input so that WeatherNext 2 can generate many different possible outcomes in a single step.  The advancements allow WeatherNext 2 to make predictions up to 15 days in advance and generate hourly forecasts. Google’s banking on that appealing to enterprise customers as well as individual consumers.  “We found that energy, agriculture, transportation, logistics, and customers in many other industries are quite interested in these one-hour steps. It helps them make more precise decisions relating to things that affect their business,” Akib Uddin, a product manager at Google Research, said on the call.   Aside from adding WeatherNext 2 to Maps, Search, Gemini, and Pixel Weather, Google is also offering an early access program for customers interested in custom modeling. The forecast data is also available in Google Earth Engine for geospatial analysis and BigQuery for large-scale data analysis.  Google has competition, of course, when it comes to figuring out how to make generative AI useful in weather forecasting. The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Nvidia, Huawei, and other companies are similarly developing their own AI weather models.

Researchers say raccoons may be inching closer to becoming pets - Dexerto

    Site: Dexerto

A new study shows that raccoons are physically changing to become more domestic as they continue to live near humans.

If you watched Guardians of the Galaxy and wished you had a pet raccoon of your own, you might be in luck, as studies show the critters are showing early signs of domestication.

Raccoons are feisty, intelligent animals native to North America. They're considered a wild species and aren't suited for being pets… but that hasn't stopped some folks from trying.

In fact, it's not completely uncommon in rural America for some folks to have a 'pet' raccoon of sorts. A film was even made about a boy and his pet raccoon, Rascal, in 1969.

While they're certainly adorable, friendly, and smart, it's not recommended to keep one as a pet due to the possibility of injury, disease, and, of course, their penchant for getting into anything and everything not completely locked down.

That being said, it looks like these critters could be domesticated sooner rather than later.

A new study shows that raccoons are physically changing in response to their environment.

Scientists find raccoons are developing traits linked to domestication

A new study from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Department of Biology found that raccoons are physically changing in response to their continued interactions with humans.

To start, we should explain that 'tame' animals tend to have specific physical traits, specifically shorter faces, floppy ears, smaller heads, and white patches on their fur. This is called 'domestication syndrome,' and the traits that arise from it are theorized to help animals survive in places with an increased human presence.

After looking through close to 20,000 photos of raccoons across the United States, researchers at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock found that raccoons living in urban areas, on average, had snouts that were 3.5 inches shorter than those living in the wilderness.

They aren't the only animals exhibiting such traits, either; foxes and mice that live in urban areas also have shorter snouts.

As raccoons continue to live alongside humans, their physiology is changing to increase their chances of survival in urban areas.

According to biologist Adam Wilkins, this could indicate that "once wild animals start spending time in the proximity of people, they become a little bit less afraid and perhaps even start showing physical signs of domestication syndrome."

In fact, foxes have already been undergoing domestication for decades. A research facility in Russia has been breeding foxes with the aim of domesticating them since the 1960s, and even sells them to help fund its research.

Be warned, though; these animals don't make great pets, and are even illegal in some areas. While they certainly look cute, both foxes and raccoons can be quite destructive (not to mention smelly) and need lots of space and enrichment in their environments.

The fight to define what the political right will stand for after President Trump leaves office is revving up, not even a year into his second term. Signs of what were once behind-the-scenes rifts are breaking into public view, from the recent turbulence at the Heritage Foundation to Trump’s breakup with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). All of the squabbling is in preparation for Republicans deciding their presidential candidate in 2028, which ideas that nominee will represent, and the political forces to which that person will have to respond.  Will Republicans chose double-digit poll leader Vice President Vance as the MAGA heir apparent — or someone else with more traditional bona fides, like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), whose interest was floated in a Monday Axios story? (This, of course, assumes populist former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s teases of a third Trump term never materialize.) A large part of what I write in The Movement every week is about that very dynamic, but it is within the last month that the battle lines are being clearly drawn and political sands are shifting. This month’s off-year elections in which Republicans took a pummeling in statewide races in Virginia, New Jersey and elsewhere — losing by far more than anticipated — have been a wake-up call to Republicans that without Trump on the ballot to motivate voters, they may have to figure out a new political coalition. “There was sort of a vibe shift on the right where it became completely apparent to everybody that Trump, who's a dominating figure on the right, was not going to be here forever,” said Tim Chapman, president of the Advancing American Freedom think tank founded by former Vice President Mike Pence. “A lot of the policy objectives that we're pursuing right now, many of them come from Trump personally. And so there's a question as to what animates the next political coalition.” Tucker Carlson’s interview with antisemitic commentator Nick Fuentes last month was a major catalyst for the civil war on the right heating up, too. It inflamed debates about antisemitism and about whether U.S. support for Israel is an essential part of conservatism. And Carlson himself became a litmus test on the right, with figures like Ben Shapiro and Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) saying he should not be welcome, given his treatment of Fuentes. Heritage for weeks has been wrestling with the fallout from President Kevin Roberts initially defending Carlson and then facing uproar from allies and staff, even after he apologized for his initial video. But even before the Carlson kerfuffle, figures in the conservative movement had been dismayed at how Roberts steered the prominent conservative think tank on economics and foreign policy, in a direction that was noninterventionist and more open to tariffs. (More on the latest at Heritage later.)  Those in the traditional conservative Reaganite wing think that their side is having a surge of energy. Their hopes are high that the three-legged stool of social conservatism, free-market economics and fiscal restraint, and national security will once again be at the center of the movement. Chapman told me that his organization has seen “a noticeable uptick in interest from potential supporters over the last quarter.” “I view that as a sign that a lot of conservatives, who have very much for very good reasons, wanted to give the Trump administration the benefit of the doubt are now 10 months in and are very concerned about what they're seeing, especially on the economic policy,” Chapman said. That traditional wing is at odds with the ideological forces that have surged under Trump: populists who embrace broad-based tariffs; immigration restrictionists; noninterventionists; and portions of the “New Right” who embrace “postliberal” political theories that devalue individualism. The high-level intellectual debate was summed up well in a brief post on social platform X last week from Harvard constitutional law professor Adrian Vermeule, author of "Common Good Constitutionalism.” In a response to the traditionalists remarking that William F. Buckley, a midcentury architect of the conservative movement, would have supported movement gatekeeping, Vermeule said: “I just don’t care what William F. Buckley would have thought.” And when it comes to electoral prospects, those more MAGA types are widely dismissing the prospect of Cruz’s criticism of Carlson being fodder for a 2028 bid going up against Vance. Commentator and activist Jack Posobiec, influencer Alex Lorusso, and The Federalist co-founder Sean Davis all responded to Cruz being floated for 2028 by noting that Trump on Sunday evening defended Carlson for interviewing Fuentes. But even some MAGA faithful are facing their own reckoning, disappointed with Trump’s defense of H-1B visas and his inviting foreign students to study in the U.S., as my colleague Julia Manchester reported. Natalie Winters, who co-hosts Bannon’s “War Room” show, called the remarks “insulting to MAGA’s intelligence.” While Trump has asserted that he is the arbiter of the “Make America Great Again” movement he helped create — “I know what MAGA wants better than anybody else, and MAGA wants to see our country thrive,” he told Fox News host Laura Ingraham — his one-time loyalists are forging their own definitions. Trump's move to unendorse Greene on Friday came after she repeatedly accused the president of betraying his “America First” message, and she has sought to define an “America Only” lane, particularly on foreign policy. Greene in many ways has put herself on an island among Republicans, but even if she is not necessarily leading a political movement, the firebrand congresswoman is clearly tapping into a motivating force for a type of GOP voter. So, can MAGA turn into an ideology defined by something more than Trump himself, or will his looming exit from the national stage make way for a resurgence of traditional conservatism as the Republican party’s guiding force? HERITAGE BOARD MEMBER OUT We’re now in the third week of the fallout at the Heritage Foundation after its President Kevin Roberts defended Tucker Carlson’s interview with Nick Fuentes. Robert P. George, the McCormick professor of jurisprudence at Princeton University, announced Monday that he resigned from the conservative think tank’s board of trustees over the matter. “Although Kevin publicly apologized for some of what he said in the video, he could not offer a full retraction of its content. So, we reached an impasse,” George wrote, adding that “Kevin is a good man.” A Heritage spokesperson said likewise that George is a “good man,” adding: “Under the leadership of Dr. Roberts, Heritage remains resolute in building an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and civil society flourish. We are strong, growing, and more determined than ever to fight for our republic.” George’s departure is bad news for those inside and outside Heritage who had hoped that the board would push Roberts out. Now, he won’t be part of a vote to replace Heritage leadership. Rumors swirled last week that there is a Heritage board meeting this week, but a Heritage spokesperson told The Spectator’s gossip blog Cockburn that there is no meeting scheduled. As I mentioned earlier, the scrutiny of Heritage goes far beyond the issue of Carlson, invigorating those who are dismayed at the think tank’s ideological shifts under Roberts. But the recent turmoil has made for some perhaps surprising and confusing alliances. After Oren Cass, founder of the more economic populist American Compass, wrote a piece in Commonplace last week that tore into Roberts, one Heritage staffer critical of Roberts told me they’d like to see Cass as the next president of Heritage. I do not expect that many of the free market purists outside Heritage who have been critical of Heritage’s economic shift would feel the same. Cass, for his part, said it would be inappropriate to comment on such speculation. Related: Under Fire for Tucker Carlson Remarks, Think Tank Chief Pleads Ignorance, by the New York Times’s David A. But as debate swirls about whether Tucker Carlson should be canceled for interviewing Nick Fuentes or is un-cancelable — and he remains the top conservative podcaster on the right — others in the media industry are drawing lines around interviewing Fuentes or veering into antisemitic territory. Actress Dasha Nekrasova, who appeared in the TV show "Succession" and co-hosts the "Red Scare" podcast, was dropped by her talent agency and from an upcoming film just weeks after interviewing Fuentes on her podcast, Deadline reported. And Vish Burra, producer at the "Matt Gaetz Show" on the One America News Network, was fired after he posted a meme depicting Jewish people as scheming cockroaches and labeling them “vermin,” The Wrap first reported. I confirmed that Burra was let go over the meme. Burra did not respond to a request for comment. ON MY CALENDAR THREE MORE THINGS 1. Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel has been receiving a protective detail in response to threats, the bureau confirmed to my colleague Rebecca Beitsch on Monday. Wilkins has been the subject of various conspiracy theories, including that she could be an Israeli spy. Patel has called Wilkins “a rock-solid conservative and a country music sensation who has done more for this nation than most will in ten lifetimes.” 2. Fabulist and expelled former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) headlined a Conservative Partnership Institute-sponsored event last week, in discussion with The Daily Wire bureau chief Tim Rice. It’s part of an event series called “Off The Record,” though the talk was streamed online, thus making it on the record and reportable here. Santos’s advice to the conservative CPI crowd? “This is a city full of vanity. I know it. I lived here … Don’t get caught up in the vanity of it, about titles, about who you work for, what you do … Just be you. Because I failed to be me, and I didn’t need to not be me in order to get elected.” Also in attendance, I’m told, was “fake heiress” con artist Anna Delvey (real name: Anna Sorokin), who had also very weirdly attended a Veterans Day event with Santos that was hosted by conservative PR firm Renegade DC and MAHA blog House Inhabit from Jessica Reed Kraus. 3. Here’s an underreported piece of context about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) stark departures from Trump and her party over the last six months, as I reported in October: Her longtime spokesperson and deputy chief of staff, Nick Dyer, left her office in May. Dyer was widely known in the press corps and on Capitol Hill, landing him on The Hill’s 2024 Notable Staffers list. And another longtime aide who ran Greene’s political operations since her first 2020 campaign, Isaiah Wartman, left her team after the 2024 election to join the White House as a special assistant to the president for personnel. Greene told me in an interview last month that the staff change has not affected her messaging. “I always wrote my tweets. I always did my own communications.” And Dyer said for that story: “It was an honor to work for Congresswoman Greene as she led the fight to reshape Congress and put America First. I’m proud of what we accomplished in a few short years.” WHAT I'M READING

UC Berkeley scientists hail breakthrough in decoding whale communication

    Site: SFGATE

The research shows overlap between whale calls and human language.

After poring over recordings from sperm whales in the Caribbean, UC Berkeley linguist Gasper Begus had an unlikely breakthrough. According to a new study from Begus and his colleagues with Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), the whales make sounds that resemble vowels, a key part of human language. Their research was published Wednesday in the journal Open Mind.  Although scientists already knew that sperm whales communicate with codas — sequences of clicks analogous to Morse code — the study indicates a more complex communication system.  “It was striking just how structured the system was. I’ve never seen anything like that before with other animals,” Begus, a UC Berkeley linguistics professor and the linguistics lead at Project CETI, told SFGATE. “We’re showing the world that there’s more than meets the eye in sperm whales and that, if one cares to look closely, they’re not as alien. We’re much more similar to each other than we used to think.” With the help of a machine-learning model to identify patterns, Begus and his team combed through recordings collected from social units of sperm whales off the coast of the island of Dominica between 2005 and 2018. When they sped up the audio, removing the silences between clicks, they heard new patterns. They found acoustic properties that share similarities with two vowels — a and i — and several vowel combinations. “Before, people were looking just at the timing and the number of clicks exchanged between sperm whales, but now we have to look at the frequencies, too. A whole new set of patterns have appeared,” Begus said. “Now, it’s one of the most complex non-human communication systems we have observed.” Project CETI includes artificial intelligence expert researchers, marine biologists, cryptographers, roboticists and underwater acousticians — all trying to understand sperm whale communication. The title of the initiative pays homage to SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.  Researchers from Project CETI published a study last year that described sperm whale codas with musical qualities like tempo and rhythm, creating a “sperm whale phonetic alphabet.” Their analysis expanded the known codas for the Caribbean clan, implying the whales can say much more to one another. But some researchers have expressed doubt about the latest findings publicly, including about whether the whales produced the patterns on purpose or whether the scientists misinterpreted the recordings.     Denise Herzing, a dolphin communication expert, told Science News that she objects to the word “vowel” out of concern that people might assume whales are using “something like human language.” Overpromising could hurt the scientific field, she suggested. But Begus said the research only shows how much more we have to learn about whales’ style of communicating. He is particularly interested in exploring how the system may differ for whales between regions and how whale babies learn to communicate in this way. Most importantly, he wants to understand the meaning behind the sounds, as a “window into whale thoughts and lives.” In the meantime, the newly published discovery has already triggered some ethical and legal questions for Begus: If whales have the capacity for language, they may need greater protections and rights.  “Animal rights have been denied because people said they didn’t have feelings or feel pain — but science has proven all that wrong,” he said. “In a sense, language is the last frontier.” — Hawaii visitor dies after unprovoked assault in Waikiki, police say— San Francisco hotel, once a celebrity hot spot, prepares to close— Wealthy Calif. town moves to permanently ban pickleball— Map shows where 18 miles of toll lanes are coming to Bay Area highway Sign up for daily SFGATE breaking news alerts here. Google now allows you to add preferred news sources.
