The Great Vowel Shift: How Far Back In Time Could You Still Understand English? | IFLScience
Added: Oct 25, 2025How Far Back In Time Could You Go And Still Understand English?
Site: IFLScience
In the 15th-18th century, English vowel sounds shifted, and nobody really knows why.
Languages evolve over time, prompting a great question: How far back in time could you go and still understand English? If you were to speak to someone from the 1800s, or read a book from the same period, you would likely be fine. Sense and Sensibility (1811) remains comprehensible, for example, with some even claiming to be entertained by it. Go back a little further though, and you will begin to struggle, partly thanks to what is known as the Great Vowel Shift, or Great Vowel Movement. From the 15th to 18th century CE, people English speakers began to pronounce their long vowels differently, making Middle English sound pretty alien to Modern English speakers. During these centuries, there was "a chain of causally related upward shifts in the vertical position of the tongue â from low to middle and from middle to high â during the articulation of long vowels", according to Encyclopedia Britannica. For example, the word "sheep" was pronounced in a similar way to the modern way of saying "shape". "During the Great Vowel Shift, the two highest long vowels became diphthongs, and the other five underwent an increase in tongue height with one of them coming to the front," linguist Asya Pereltsvaig explained in a blog post on the topic. "Thus, /i:/ became /aj/ (as in child and rise) and /u:/ became /aw/ (as in loud and mouth). Also, /e:/ became /i:/ (as in three and feet) and /o:/ became /u:/ (as in good and goose). Furthermore, lower version of /e:/ became /e:/ and later /i:/ (as in speak or beam) and the lower version of /o:/ became /o:/ and later /ow/ (as in holy and stone). Finally, /a:/ became /ĂŠ:/ and later /ej/ (as in name)." To complicate it further, as English so loves to do, the same changes did not take place in all words (while some regional accents still retain old pronunciations). Couple this with structural and grammatical changes to the language in Old English, a Germanic language, and you'd find it difficult to understand the gist of the conversation if you somehow arrived in the 12th century (though we'd hazard a guess it would translate to something along the lines of "look, a demon has appeared, kill the demon" etc etc). Of course, if you had time to study the language (as we do today) you would stand more of a chance. So why this weird shift? Nobody really knows for sure, though there are a few theories flying around. One is that a lot of people migrated towards London after the Black Death reduced the population significantly, resulting in a big mix of dialects and pronunciations in the capital. Another factor could be the expansion of the middle classes, who may have overdone their attempts to sound upper class. But perhaps the most fun theory is that during wars against France, the English began to change the way we speak to move away from French pronunciations, changing the whole way of pronouncing a language simply to sound less French. An earlier version of this article was published in 2023.

A Whale Protected A Scientist From A Huge Shark. A Year And 15 Days Later, They Were Reunited | IFLScience
Added: Oct 25, 2025A Whale Protected A Scientist From A Huge Shark. A Year And 15 Days Later, They Were Reunited
Site: IFLScience
âIt was like seeing your dog that you havenât seen in six months.â
While filming on location off Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, whale scientist Nan Hauser was swimming towards two humpback whales when one of them started charging at her. When it approached, it started moving as if it were trying to tuck her under its fin â not a very comfortable maneuver for a human being hugged by a multi-ton giant with razor-sharp barnacles on its fins. Fearing for her life, things only got scarier as the humpback whale hoisted her out of the water and onto its back. She tried to swim away multiple times, but it wouldnât let her. Eventually she was able to put some distance between her and the enormous humpback whale. Only then did she understand why it had been behaving so strangely. In the distance, she could see what looked like two whales, one of which was smacking its tail against the water. On closer inspection, she could see that the second whale was moving peculiarly, with its pectoral fins tucked in and its tail swishing side to side instead of up and down. It was at this point Hauser realized she was looking at the biggest tiger shark sheâd ever seen. âIâve spent my entire life underwater and Iâve seen plenty of tiger sharks,â she explained during a 2021 interview with BBC Earth. âThis was like a truck. This was a huge tiger shark, and it was coming right for me.â Itâs Hauserâs belief that the whale was trying to get her under its fin to protect her. While we canât speak Whale ( yet ) to ask the animal what it was doing, the whaleâs final act during that fraught interaction was to get Hauser on its back and ferry her back to her boat. With such a sizable tiger shark on the prowl, it likely saved her life even if it didnât mean to. âI still to this day canât believe it happened and being a scientist itâs even harder,â she said. âIf someone told me this story, I wouldnât believe them.â Humpbacks are known to exhibit altruism, a behavioral trait where you do something for another individual that in no way benefits you. Hauser's story is an exceptional example if the whale was indeed trying to save her life, as it means the whale put itself in danger to protect an unrelated species. Quite the hero, then, and amazingly Hauser got to be reunited with her rescuer one year and 15 days later. She was radioed that a whale had swum into the area, and after boating out to see it, spotted that it had two notches on its tail fluke â just like the one that had saved her life. âAnd then next I knew the whale came up next to the side of the boat," said Hauser. "He ignored everyone else on the boat, and he stared directly at me⊠I looked at him, and I saw a scar on his head, and I just screamed âheâs back I canât believe it heâs back!â and sure enough there he was.â âI just whipped on my wet skin and slid [into the] water and I swam down next to him and he opened his eyes and he just looked at me and kept nudging me... It was like seeing your dog that you havenât seen in six months.â At 27-33 tons, thatâs one hell of a cuddle. Hauser hopes that one day sheâll get to see her cetacean pal again. "I miss him," she said. "I mean, who misses a whale?" An earlier version of this article was published in November 2021.

Creativity in the Age of AI - Knowledge at Wharton Added: Oct 26, 2025
Creativity in the Age of AI
Site: Knowledge at Wharton
In a new book, Wharton's Jerry Wind and his co-authors argue that creativity is a learnable skill that becomes more powerful when paired with intelligent machines.
In an era where AI can write poetry, create marketing campaigns and out-analyze entire business teams, the question isnât whether AI will change creativity -- it already has. Creativity in the Age of AI: Toolkits for the Modern Mind, by Wharton marketing professor Jerry Wind, Mukul Pandya, and Deborah Yao, teaches professionals how to harness this shift to augment their skills and stay one step ahead of the technology. The authors argue that creativity isnât in-born but a learnable skill that becomes more powerful when paired with intelligent machines. Those who learn to collaborate with AI will redefine what it means to imagine, invent, and lead. Following is an excerpt from the book.
Picture this: Your company is losing market share to a nimble startup that seemingly came out of nowhere. Your team is stuck in the same brainstorming loops, producing variations of familiar ideas. Meanwhile, your competitor is leveraging AI to innovate at unprecedented speed. Whatâs their edge? Creative thinking enhanced by AI.
Or imagine a visionary architect sketching a sustainable city, blending nature with urban life, and with AI assistance, innovative architectural concepts emerge in hours instead of months -- living buildings that breathe, streets that generate energy, and communities designed for harmony with the environment. A scientist, driven by curiosity and powered by AI analysis, spots patterns in complex data that others overlooked, leading to a breakthrough in disease treatment. A musician experiments fearlessly, using AI to fuse sounds from different cultures and eras, birthing an entirely new genre that captivates millions.
This isnât science fiction, itâs happening right now.
This perspective is based on our conviction that while not everyone can match the creative genius of Leonardo da Vinci or Thomas Edison, each of us can nurture and develop our own creativity if we build a toolkit of creativity approaches and enhance it with the use of AI.
The Creative Imperative in Business
In todayâs rapidly evolving marketplace, creativity is more than simply a ânice-to- haveâ; itâs a matter of survival. McKinsey research shows that companies in the top quartile for innovation achieve 2.4x higher revenue growth. Meanwhile, 70% of executives report that their teams struggle with creative problem-solving. The gap between creative leaders and followers is widening dramatically.
Consider the evidence:

Organizations using systematic creativity approaches report 25% to 40% faster innovation cycles

Teams trained in morphological analysis generate 3x more viable solutions

Companies applying trend analysis techniques identify market opportunities 18 months ahead of competitors

Businesses that integrate AI-enhanced creativity see productivity gains

Yet most professionals have never been taught how to be systematically creative -- until now.
Most professionals have never been taught how to be systematically creative -- until now.

For Business Leaders and Professionals: Your Competitive Edge
Whether youâre a CEO navigating industry disruption, a product manager seeking breakthrough innovations, a consultant solving complex client challenges, or an entrepreneur building the next big thing, this book provides battle-tested approaches used by companies like Google, Tesla, Netflix, and Airbnb, with 12 creativity approaches that have been proven in boardrooms, innovation labs, and startup accelerators worldwide.
Professional Impact Youâll Achieve:

Lead more innovative teams that consistently outperform competitors

Identify market opportunities others miss through systematic trend analysis

Reduce time-to-solution for complex business challenges

Build a culture of innovation that attracts top talent

Leverage AI tools to speed and amplify your ideation and analysis capabilities

Transform meetings from time-wasters into breakthrough sessions

The AI Advantage: Your Creative Superpower
Today, we stand on the cusp of an unprecedented explosion in creativity in the age of AI. AI models such as ChatGPT and others act as intelligent collaborative tools that can serve as launchpads for further innovation. They can write, create images, compose music, craft videos, code, brainstorm, research, analyze, and more -- capabilities that can supercharge a broad swath of industries. Now, there are AI agents that go beyond AI chatbots to complete multi-step tasks for you autonomously.
But hereâs the crucial insight: AI doesnât replace human creativity -- it amplifies it exponentially. Learn to use ChatGPT for rapid prototyping, Claude for strategic analysis, or emerging AI tools for market research, competitive intelligence, and scenario planning. Transform hours of brainstorming into minutes of AI-enhanced ideation. The professionals and organizations mastering AI-human creative partnerships are pulling ahead at lightning speed. The question is: Will you be among them?
Proven Results From Real Organizations
The approaches have been adopted by organizations that created industry-altering solutions:

Netflix used trend analysis (Approach #7) to pivot from DVD rental to streaming, revolutionizing entertainment.

Tesla challenged mental models (Approach #1) to redefine the automotive industry and force every competitor to go electric.

Amazonâs customer obsession (Approach #7) and experimental culture (Approach #8), exemplifies transformation processes that generated hundreds of billions in value.

Airbnb applied morphological analysis (Approach #3) to disrupt the hospitality industry worth $600 billion.

Google built a culture of curiosity (Approach #9) that spawned breakthrough products from Search to Android to AI.

AI doesnât replace human creativity -- it amplifies it exponentially.

Historical Context: Why Creativity Matters More Than Ever
Creativity, as we understand it today, has relatively recent origins. MIT Technology Reviewâs examination of Samuel Franklinâs The Cult of Creativity reveals that our modern understanding emerged primarily after World War II in America.
Creativity became a response to societyâs growing conformity and bureaucratization, providing what Franklin describes as âa way to unleash individualism within order, and revive the spirit of the lone inventor within the maze of the modern corporation.â
This historical perspective shows why creativity has become a fundamental value in contemporary society. Silicon Valley particularly exemplifies this trend, valuing creativity precisely because it combines novelty with utility -- two elements highly prized in technology markets. As AI increasingly participates in creative processes, understanding this context becomes more relevant. Our definitions and practices of creativity continue to evolve alongside technological and social changes.
Break Free From Institutional Constraints
At this point, you might protest that youâre not the creative type: most of us arenât Beethovens or Picassos. But you donât have to be a prodigy to benefit from being dramatically more creative in everything you do, from solving everyday problems to developing breakthrough strategies.
Ironically, the institutions meant to encourage creative thinking are the same ones stifling its emergence. Schools focus on rote memorization and standardized tests, often neglecting creative thinking development. Students are rewarded for conformity and regurgitating information rather than original thought and problem-solving skills. Organizations inadvertently suppress creativity through rigid hierarchies, bureaucratic processes, and resistance to change.
These societal shackles leave us trapped in old mental models that influence how we interpret information, solve problems, and make decisions. These models create blind spots and restrict our thinking to conventional pathways that block innovative solutions.
But hereâs the exciting news: Challenging these mental models is the first step to unlocking extraordinary creativity. By changing your mind, you can change your future.
