Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS, the third known object from outside our solar system, is being studied for its age and origin. New research suggests it may have come from a distant region where old and young stars coexist, potentially making it a 10-billion-year-old relic from the Milky Way's infancy, predating our Sun. The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS does not come from our corner of the Milky Way, new research into its trajectory hints.
The rare interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS is the third known object from outside our solar system to be discovered passing through our celestial neighborhood. Astronomers have categorized this object as interstellar because of the hyperbolic shape of its orbital path. Astronomers may be closing in on the age and origin of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it barrels toward the center of our solar system.A new study tracing the cometâs 4-million-year journey through the Milky Way suggests it may have come from a distant, uncharted region â the boundary where the galaxyâs oldest and youngest stars coexist. It is only the third interstellar object ever detected and appears to be the largest so far, with recent estimates putting it somewhere between 3 and 7 miles (4.8 to 11.2 kilometers) wide.This celestial traveler is making a months-long journey through the inner solar system, recently swinging past Mars on Friday (Oct. 3) and set to make its closest approach to the sun on Oct. 30, according to NASA. After that, it will continue its voyage toward interstellar space, gliding past Jupiter in March 2026 before fading from sight. The closest it will approach our planet is about 1.8 astronomical units (about 170 million miles, or 270 million kilometers). 3I/ATLAS will reach its closest point to the Sun around October 30, 2025, at a distance of about 1.4 au (130 million miles, or 210 million kilometers) â just inside the orbit of Mars.The interstellar cometâs size and physical properties are being investigated by astronomers around the world. 3I/ATLAS should remain visible to ground-based telescopes through September 2025, after which it will pass too close to the Sun to observe. It will reappear on the other side of the Sun by early December 2025, allowing for renewed observations.Comet 3I/ATLAS comes from Milky WayUsing data from the European Space Agencyâs now-retired Gaia space telescope, researchers reconstructed the cometâs path 4.27 million years into the past and pinpointed 62 nearby stars it likely passed. NASA ponders We have found that none of the stars in the solar neighborhood can explain the trajectory and high velocity of 3I/ATLAS, lead study author Xabier PĂ©rez-Couto, an astrophysics postgraduate student at Spain's Universidade da Coruña, told Live Science. Only one nearby star, measuring about 70% the mass of the sun, appears to have impacted the comet's trajectory at all, but it was only by a negligible amount, the researchers added in their paper.This led the team to postulate that 3I/ATLAS is a very old object, that has been traveling for [billions of years], and that its origin belongs to the border of the thin disk, PĂ©rez-Couto said.If comet 3I/ATLAS did indeed originate from the border of these two disks, it could mean the object is incredibly old â potentially 10 billion years old, making it more than double the age of our roughly 4 billion-year-old sun.
