Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Shows "Extreme Negative Polarization". What Does That Mean? | IFLScience
Added: Oct 1, 2025Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Shows "Extreme Negative Polarization". What Does That Mean?
Site: IFLScience
According to the team the polarimetric behavior is "significantly different from all known comets (either interstellar or bound to our Solar System)".
A team of astronomers have presented the first polarimetric observations of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, finding that it has extreme negative polarization. On July 1, 2025, astronomers spotted an object moving through the Solar System at nearly twice the velocity of previous interstellar visitors āOumuamua and Comet Borisov. The object was confirmed to be an interstellar comet with its own dusty coma, and suspected to be far larger than the previous two, with a estimated nucleus (the rocky part of the comet, excluding its coma) of around 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles), and a possible "anomalous" mass of over 33 billion tons. The astronomical community continued to track the object, known to be a comet due to outgassing as it has approached closer to the Sun, as it made its way through the Solar System. Unfortunately, and after potentially being hit by a coronal mass ejection, it has now vanished from our view and won't be back in sight until later this year. Part of these observations have been imaging and spectroscopy of the object, revealing that it has a green tinge and some interesting chemistry going on, and its distinctive coma. But polarimetry, or measuring the rotation of plane-polarized light, can tell us a lot about about near and distant objects too, allowing astronomers to gain data on, for example, the size, shape, and orientation of dust particles surrounding a comet. "Light is a wave consisting of a coupled oscillating electric and magnetic fields which are orthogonal to each other in a plane that is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave (in vacuum)," Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who was not involved in the new research, explains in a blog post. "The polarization of the wave corresponds to different modes of field oscillations. For linear polarization, the electric and magnetic fields oscillate along a single direction, whereas for circular polarization ā the fields rotate at a constant rate in their plane as the wave travels, either in the right-hand or in the left-hand direction." "The level of polarization displayed by an object which scatters sunlight like 3I/ATLAS, reflects asymmetries in its global shape or its corpuscular composition. The polarization depends on the phase angle at which the 3I/ATLAS is observed, namely the angle between the Sun-3I/ATLAS axis and the 3I/ATLAS-observer axis." Measuring the degree of polarization can tell us a lot about 3I/ATLAS, and other, more local, comets. Astronomers measure the degree of polarization, as well as whether it is negative or positive. "The degree of linear polarization Pr of sunlight scattered by cometary dust particles is measured as the difference between the fluxes perpendicular and parallel to the scattering plane (Sun-comet-observer plane), normalized by their sum, and is highly sensitive to the solar phase angle α (Sun-comet-observer angle)," the team explains in their paper, currently posted as an unreviewed preprint. "Because of this definition, polarization is positive when the polarization direction is oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane, and negative when parallel." Comets we have observed so far can vary in their polarization based on their distance from the Sun, and the distance of the comet from our telescopes, but there are still trends within this. Generally comets fit into one of two categories (high polarization comets and low polarization comets) though there are a few oddballs out there, like Hale-Bopp, which are outliers for their unusually high polarization. "3I is characterized by an extremely deep and narrow negative polarization branch, with parameters Pmin = ā2.77 ± 0.11%, α min = 6.41±1.27ā¦, α0 = 17.05±0.12ā¦, and h = 0.40±0.02% degā1," the team explains in their paper. "This polarimetric behaviour is significantly different from all known comets (either interstellar or bound to our Solar System), not fitting into either the high or low-polarization comet categories, nor that of the unique category occupied by just Hale-Bopp and 2I." The team suggests that the comet has more in common with trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), minor planets and smaller objects that orbit the Sun beyond Neptune, and Centaurs. "While 3Iās inversion angle resembles that of rare F-type asteroids and cometary nuclei, the depth of its negative polarization branch is almost twice as large. Extrapolation to very small phase angles indicate a steep polarization slope between phase angles 0ā2°, reminiscent of certain small TNOs and Centaurs," the team writes. "While this finding is tentative due to a lack of data at small phase angles, it is consistent with the red spectral slope and evidence of water-ice detections in various independent studies." Further observations of the object are needed, but, of course, it is currently out of view. "Imaging confirms a diffuse coma present from our earliest observations, though no strong polarimetric features are spatial resolved," the team adds in a statement. "These findings may demonstrate that 3I represents a distinct type of comet, expanding the diversity of known interstellar bodies." The paper has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters but is currently unreviewed. It has been posted to preprint server arXiv.

Badass Grasshopper Mouse Howls At The Moon And Is Immune To Scorpion Venom | IFLScience
Added: Oct 2, 2025Meet The Only Mouse Known To Howl At The Moon
Site: IFLScience
They might be small but grasshopper mice are top level carnivores.
You might think that only werewolves howl at the Moon, but this spooky season, weāre bringing you another creature with a lot to say at nighttime. Meet the grasshopper mouse; it might be small, but it has one heck of a voice. There are three species of grasshopper mouse that are closely related to deer mice: the northern grasshopper mouse ( Onychomys leucogaster ), the southern grasshopper mouse ( O. torridus ), and Mearnsā grasshopper mouse ( O. arenicola ). The southern grasshopper mouse is found in northern Mexico and the southwest of the United States, including the Sonoran Desert. It measures roughly 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) from the tip of its nose to its tail and weighs somewhere between 20-50 grams (>0.1 pounds). Oh, and it howls like a wolf. Despite being literally mouse-sized, these diminutive little rodents are actually top-level carnivores and voracious predators and will attack pretty much anything smaller than they are for food. While they have been recorded eating some plant material, the majority of their diet is grasshoppers, scorpions, and other arthropods. Their Latin name, Onychomys, means āclawed mouseā as their paws and even fingernails are specially adapted to hold onto slippery, struggling prey. Compared to deer mice, they even have a stronger bite force for killing their dinner. The Sonoran Desert is home to more venomous creatures than anywhere else in the United States. One of these species is the Arizona bark scorpion, which is highly venomous and can be fatal to humans. The grasshopper mouse survives because it has a special method of shutting down the pain signal to the brain when the venom is ingested, using sodium channels. As well as its venom-defying skills, the grasshopper mouse is actually famous for howling at the Moon. Both males and females stand on their hind legs, point their noses in the air, and let out a very high-pitched noise in the range of 9-14 Hertz that can be heard for 100 meters (330 feet). Often, the howl precedes a kill, and though its function is not known for sure, it is thought to be a way for the mouse to mark its territory. The howl is produced in the same way wolves howl ā and humans speak ā too. A 2017 study found that they produce two types of vocalizations. One is a classic whistle-like mechanism used by other rodents and the other is a unique tissue vibration induced by airflow, like humans and wolves.

Gov. Newsom threatens to withhold billions from California colleges that sign Trump's 'compact'

Gov. Gavin Newsom is threatening to withhold billions in state funds from any California college
Gov. Gavin Newsom is threatening to withhold billions in state funds from any California college that signs onto an agreement crafted by President Donald Trump's administration requiring schools to agree to support the President's education agenda in order to have access to federal dollars. The 10-page "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" requires universities to adhere to rules written by the administration in a variety of areas, including admissions, hiring, free speech on campus, teaching and the use of endowments."Institutions of higher education are free to develop models and values other than those below, if the institution elects to forego federal benefits," the compact states. "IF ANY CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY SIGNS THIS RADICAL AGREEMENT, THEYāLL LOSE BILLIONS IN STATE FUNDING ā INCLUDING CAL GRANTS ā INSTANTLY. CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS, AND SURRENDER ACADEMIC FREEDOM," Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement Thursday, intending for the entire statement to be written completely in uppercase letters. The compact was sent to nine universities this week, with the only California school being the University of Southern California. A spokesperson for the university did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon. USC is a private school and the bulk of its state funds are received through Cal Grants. Cal Grants are part of the state's financial aid program that provides funding to students, and the money does not need to be paid back. According to the California Department of Finance, USC received a total of $28.4 million in Cal Grant funding in the past year. The independent California intuitions together received $227.6 million in total in that same year.State schools including the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems received a total of $2.2 billion in Cal Grant funds in the 2024-2025 budget year. Public institutions are also eligible for the state's Middle Class Scholarship, which is another large source of state financial aid funding to California institutions. Independent private for-profit institutions like USC are not eligible for it, the Department of Finance Confirmed. Private institutions are able to tap into several other state financial aid programs, such as the Golden State Teacher Grant, Chafee, and others. For USC, the Department of Finance said state funds from those sources range in the low millions of General Fund dollars per year. A spokesperson for the White House responded to the governor's threats Thursday night. āGavin Newscum should worry about the disaster heās created in his own state ā from endangering girls by forcing men in their sports to hiding critical information from parents about their childrenās health," said Abigail Jackson, a spokeswoman for the White House. "By opposing the compact, Newscum is opposing efforts to cap wild tuition hikes and to protect free speech. The Trump Administration is reforming higher education across America and encouraging universities to join us in restoring academic excellence and common-sense policies.ā [/related]See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel(More state politics coverage in the video below: California to spend at least $2 million to correct Prop 50 voter guides.)
