As temperatures continue to creep upward in Texas, an unusual visitor has appeared in local backyards: a striking bird with the brilliant plumage of a blue jay and the body shape of its tropical cousin, the green jay. Scientists say the āgrue jayā is the first known wild hybrid of the two species, born as a result of their once-separate ranges colliding in the wake of climate change. Biologists at The University of Texas at Austin first became aware of the bird after seeing a grainy image posted by a woman in a suburb northeast of San Antonio. She invited the scientists to her house, explaining that the bird would often visit her backyard. Unfortunately, catching the odd-looking jay was easier said than done. "The first day, we tried to catch it, but it was really uncooperative. But the second day, we got lucky," Brian Stokes, lead study author and a graduate student in ecology, evolution, and behavior at the University of Texas, said in a statement. Image credit: Brian Stokes/University of Texas at Austin Once it was caught, Stokes drew a blood sample, tagged the jayās leg, and set it free. The bird fell off the radar for a few years, but then returned to the same woman's yard in June 2025. Upon studying the birdās genetics and appearance, the researchers concluded it was a male hybrid offspring of a green jay mother and a blue jay father. A similar hybrid was created in captivity by crossing the two species in the 1970s, but this is the first recorded instance of one in the wild. And it may not be the last. The two parent species diverged from each other around 7 million years ago and, until recently, they inhabited separate ranges that didnāt overlap. Blue jays thrived in the temperate forests of the eastern US, while green jays flourished in the tropics of Central America, reaching only the very southern edge of Texas. Image credit: Brian Stokes/University of Texas at Austin However, climate change is rewriting that map. Temperatures are rising, causing the green jay to push further north. Meanwhile, the blue jay is extending its range westward, causing the two species to converge in a region near San Antonio. "We think it's the first observed vertebrate that's hybridized as a result of two species both expanding their ranges due, at least in part, to climate change," noted Stokes. "Hybridization is probably way more common in the natural world than researchers know about because there's just so much inability to report these things happening. And it's probably possible in a lot of species that we just don't see because they're physically separated from one another and so they don't get the chance to try to mate," Stokes said. Even beyond the realm of Texan jays, climate change is creating new opportunities for hybridization by messing with species' natural ranges. A prime example is the pizzly bear, born as a result of inter-species romping between a grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilis ) and a polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ). Earth is changing fast ā and so is the life that inhabits it. The new study is published in the journal Ecology & Evolution.

T hey say music is the language of the soul, which is fitting given a pivotal soundtrack of classical music once saved the souls of roughly 2,000 beluga whales in the Chukchi Peninsula, the easternmost peninsula of Asia. Here, in 1985, an enormous herd of beluga whales was spotted by local residents, which was no doubt a pleasing sight at first given these animals were a rich source of nutrition for the community. However, it soon became apparent that all was not well as a turn in the weather had forged a 4-kilometer (2.5 miles) lump of thick ice that stood between the whales' air holes and the open ocean. They couldnāt swim this distance without running out of oxygen, and with few air holes for so many animals, it was clear action needed to be taken if they were to survive. While the residents waited for a miracle, they kept the animals fed with frozen fish and maintained air holes by digging in the ice. However, with winter looming and conditions worsening this option would soon be taken away, sealing the whalesā fate under a thick layer of ice. As luck would have it, Russia had just treated itself to a Finnish icebreaker, the largest and most powerful of its kind at the time. These ships do exactly as it says on the tin, carving through thick ice at high latitudes where normal boats cannot venture. One of its showiest onboard features was a diesel-electric power plant that was one of the most powerful of any ship in use at that time. Russia enlisted the Moskva in the rescue mission to save the belugas, but it needed to act swiftly if they were to free them in time. When they arrived, the situation was worse than they had realized and the mission was called off by the shipās captain. It seemed all was lost until, moved by the sight of so many perishing whales, the crew decided they had to act. As they began plowing into the ice, helicopters were dropping fish to try and sustain the whales still left alive. Carving a route to the animals took several days but the Moskva eventually made it. Unfortunately, tired and traumatized by the ship the whales wouldnāt budge and couldn't be persuaded to follow the ship back out into open water. A crew member made the unusual suggestion that music could turn the rescue mission around, as they remembered hearing that whales react to music. Short on options, the Moskva temporarily became a speaker as it blared all kinds of music into the icy landscape. It was classical that proved to be the most effective beluga lure, causing them to approach the boat to investigate the melody, and so the Moskva steadily began herding the pod out of their icy prison. āOur tactic is this: We back up, then advance again into the ice, make a passage, and wait,ā Captain Kovalenko is reported to have said in radio transmission. āWe repeat this several times. The belugas start to āunderstandā our intentions and follow the icebreaker. Thus we move kilometer by kilometer.ā Like the Pied Piper and his rats, the Moskvaās melody was followed as it carved its way out of the ice by the discerning belugas. Around 2,000 animals are believed to have finally made it back to the open ocean by the end of February that same year. The lengthy mission is said to have cost Russia somewhere in the region of $200,000 all in all, but what's $100 for a beluga whale's life? An earlier version of this article was published in 2021.
