11 Things Intelligent People Say When They Know You’re Lying But Won’t Call You Out
YourTango
Intelligent people might just be the ultimate lie detectors.

If there's one thing about intelligent people, it's that they'll clock anyone. Now, don't get it twisted. It's not like they're trying to be hyper-observant. Due to their naturally sharp eye, they can tell when someone is clearly lying, but because they don't want to start trouble, there are some specific things they will say when they know you're lying but won't call you out that let you know you've been caught without making things too uncomfortable for anyone. Whether it's because they genuinely care for others or because they don't want to waste their own energy, intelligent people will rarely directly out someone for lying, unless they need to. Blame it on their need for peace and order, but intelligent people hate stirring the pot unless it's necessary. So, while some people might not understand them, if anyone who's remotely intelligent utters these phrases, just know they caught you. 11 things intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out 1. 'Interesting... tell me more about that' The first thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying is, "Interesting... tell me more." On the one hand, intelligent people can often discern when someone is lying with minimal effort. Due to their keen observation skills, it doesn't take much for their alarm bells to sound when things don't add up. Even so, this doesn't mean they won't give a skeptical eye brow raise and slightly test them. If there's one thing about a liar, it's that it's hard for them to keep their story consistent. According to Professor of Psychology John D Mayer, Ph.D. , "Liars leak clues in physical form through their body language, in their words or lack thereof, through their emotional displays, and in their thinking (cognitive clues)." So, if someone's truly intelligent and wants to mess around, they might test the other person just to watch them fidget and stumble over their words. Is it the kindest thing to do? No, but since they are already lying, who cares, right? RELATED: 11 Things Highly Intelligent People Quietly Abandon As They Get Older 2. 'Wow, what are the odds?' Most people can admit that intelligent people are some of the funniest individuals in the world. Despite what people may think, there's a link between humor and intelligence. According to a study published in Intelligence , people find those who are funny more attractive, as it reveals intelligence and creativity. Even so, when an intelligent person is truly smart, they say things that most people don't catch, unless they're intelligent themselves. This is why another thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "Wow, what are the odds?" It's not like they're trying to be rude, but their inner sarcasm and sense of humor come out when someone is clearly full of it. Once again, intelligent people tend to be polite, as they know arguing isn't always worth it. Still, they can't help but throw in a bit of sass whenever the mood strikes them. RELATED: 11 Things Average People Think Are Status Symbols That Mean Nothing To Highly Intelligent Minds 3. 'If you say so' If there's one thing intelligent people know how to do, it's mind their own business. Unlike others, they aren't here for the drama or the petty arguments. This is why a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "If you say so." Arguing is pointless. While it might be tempting to call someone out, it isn't always worth it. In some instances, calling someone out can only give them a headache, as it often leads to more arguments and drama. This is why the best thing to do is to remain neutral and allow people to run their mouths. As most people know, drama leads to stress, and according to a study published in 2017, stress can lead to diseases and pathological conditions. So, while others might not understand their neutrality, in the end, intelligent people always win as they stay out of people's way.  RELATED: 7 Things Highly Intelligent People Do That Make Them Immune To Other People's Negativity 4. 'You always keep things interesting' Everyone has that one friend or family member who's a hot mess. An intelligent person might love someone, but the frequency and nature of the lies and nonsense they utter seriously need to be studied. Still, intelligent people never truly say anything, and instead, a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "You always keep things interesting." This phrase isn't necessarily an insult, but it is a nod to the nonsense that people bring to the table. And while their friends and family grow tired of their neutral deadpan way of speaking, intelligent people just can't help themselves; they're neutral by nature. According to Athena's Advanced Academy, "An ability to remove bias from your own viewpoint and take in different viewpoints is a fundamental part of being intelligent in my mind." This is also why many intelligent people tend to be neutral; they simply see all sides of an argument. So, while some people might find it off-putting, intelligent people are just taking everything, and even if the other person is lying, they remain open-minded and uncaring. RELATED: 11 Things Highly Intelligent People Do That Make Those With Average Minds Uncomfortable 5. 'Everyone sees things differently, I guess'  Intelligent people don't try to be messy, but sometimes people are so ridiculous that they can't help but stare at them in disbelief. Whether it's lying about work or failed relationships, there are people in this world who know how to spin a story in ways that make Suzanne Collins look like a novice storyteller. Still, intelligent people keep to themselves, and instead, a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "Everyone sees things differently, I guess." They aren't trying to be funny, but the reality is that most chronic liars are a bit delusional and want to control the narrative. According to clinical psychologist David J. Ley, Ph.D. , "The truth can be 'inconvenient' because it might not conform to their narrative." Thankfully, intelligent people know this, which is why they don't get too caught up in their tales and instead, make a sly comment before effectively moving on. RELATED: 11 Things Highly Intelligent People Notice Immediately When Meeting Someone New 6. 'That's quite the story' Another thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying, but won't call you out, is, "That's quite the story." Sometimes, intelligent people need to clock others without doing so outwardly. And while they'll never yell, "This person is a liar," a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out, is, "That's quite the story." If there's one thing about an intelligent person, it's that they'll give people a warning to stop before they call them out. They don't want to be difficult, but people who are liars rarely get the respect and recognition they desire. According to Professor of Sociology Thomas Henricks, Ph.D., "When we lie—and are caught doing so—people see us in a new light. They realize they can't trust us to be the person we say we are." This is why intelligent people subtly clock them, but don't directly call them out. Whether it's from a place of concern or simply annoyance, intelligent people are basically saying, "Yeah, it's clear you're a liar." RELATED: 11 Happiness-Draining Habits Highly Intelligent People Have No Time For 7. 'Why do you think that is?' Most intelligent people are naturally curious. Whether it's about other countries or different subjects, intelligent people love to do their research before reaching a conclusion. This is why a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying, but won't call you out, is, "Why do you think that is?" Intelligent people aren't trying to be rude, but sometimes, liars are so blinded by their own egos that they forget to look at the other perspective. Thankfully, many intelligent people are excellent at staying neutral, which is why they highly encourage others to do the same. According to a study published in 2010, open-minded people are more likely to be intelligent. So, while they prefer to stay out of other people's business, they also encourage them to conduct their own research before escalating the situation further. RELATED: 11 Things Highly Intelligent People Stop Caring About After A Certain Age 8. 'I see...' Sorry, but most intelligent people don't really care. Whether it's the new steamy Hailey Bieber drama or what happened at the office, intelligent people love to keep it lowkey. This is why a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying, but won't call you out, is, "I see..." They want to stay neutral. Despite the think pieces others have, intelligent people aren't trying to involve themselves in other people's mess, which is why they utter this phrase before effectively changing the subject. Sure, they might know the other person is full of it, but calling them out is simply a waste of energy, which is why they ignore the situation instead. This is great, as a study published in 2018 found that peace of mind is related to less anxiety.  So, really, whose winning in the end? The liar who's probably stressed with having to keep up with their lies? Or the intelligent people, who refuse to engage in the first place? RELATED: 15 Things Highly Intelligent People Do That Make Them Immune To Other People's Control 9. 'Good to know...' Want to know if an intelligent person cares or not? Listen to how they respond. If an intelligent person agrees or understands someone's point of view, they'll nod along and add their own input. However, when someone is spouting nonsense, a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "Good to know..." Hint: If someone says, "Good to know," it's likely they don't care and feel that someone is wasting their time. Sure, they might be polite about it, but in actuality, they're trying to find the quickest way to change the conversation without coming off as too rude. RELATED: 11 Social Rules Highly Intelligent People Refuse To Follow 10. 'That's one I haven't heard before' Sure, it might be a little shady, but sometimes, intelligent people can't help it. Liars are often so caught up in their own lies that they don't make the most sense, causing intelligent people to become increasingly fed up. As a result, a thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying, but won't call you out, is, "That's one I haven't heard before." Sorry, but a clumsy or over-dramatic story isn't something intelligent people fall over. Sure, they'll give someone props for their creative way of thinking, but at the end of the day, lying can be viewed as another form of manipulation, which intelligent people don't appreciate. So, while they're certainly calm and collected, intelligent people might be a bit shady depending on who is lying and what they're lying about. RELATED: 11 Reasons Introverts Are The Most Highly Intelligent Of All People, According To Research 11. 'That must've been something' Finally, the last thing intelligent people say when they know you're lying but won't call you out is, "That must've been something." People certainly have a way of spinning stories to work in their favor. What started off as a small understanding turns into a whole Hollywood film with liars. This is why most intelligent people grow fed up and say sly things. Once again, they don't want to be rude or disrespectful, but when push comes to shove, they can't help but let out a sarcastic phrase with an eyeroll for good measure. Thankfully, most lairs don't realize they've been caught red-handed until it's far too late. One year after Biden's exit, Democrats still searching for winning message but they are getting smarter | Fox News

It’s been a year since President Joe Biden shocked the nation by stepping aside from the 2024 presidential race. At the time, many Democrats hoped this would be the moment the party found its footing—a chance to regroup, refresh, and reconnect with voters. Instead, what we’ve seen is a party more divided and confused than ever.  A Leadership Vacuum and Mixed Messages When Biden withdrew, Vice President Kamala Harris quickly became the frontrunner. But instead of rallying around a clear message, the Democratic Party fell into a tug-of-war over what it should stand for. Harris’s campaign team wanted to make the election all about Donald Trump—warning voters that Trump was a threat to democracy and that the stakes couldn’t be higher. They talked about protecting our institutions, our rights, and the very soul of America. But at the same time, a powerful Democratic super PAC called Future Forward—armed with nearly a billion dollars—had a different idea. They thought the campaign should focus on everyday issues like jobs, inflation, and the cost of living. They wanted to show voters that Harris could bring real change and new ideas, not just more of the same. BIDEN'S STUNNING EXIT, ONE YEAR LATER: THE DROPOUT HEARD AROUND THE COUNTRY Looking back, it seems Future Forward was right. Voters were desperate for answers on the economy, and they wanted to know how Democrats would make their lives better. But here’s the problem: Kamala Harris never delivered a message that convinced people she had a real plan for jobs, inflation, or the cost of living. She certainly didn’t deliver on policies. And she never answered the question that was on everyone’s mind: How would she be different from Joe Biden? Apart from the obvious fact that she wasn’t Joe Biden, voters never got a clear sense of what she would actually do differently. The result? Voters got a confusing mix of messages. Some ads and speeches were about saving democracy; others were about fixing the economy. Instead of reinforcing each other, these messages clashed. Voters were left wondering: What do Democrats really stand for? What’s the main reason to vote for Harris? This is the lesson Democrats need to learn if they want to win back trust: Stop making every election about the other guy. Start making it about the people you want to represent.  The Mamdani Model: Trump’s Playbook, Democratic Edition If the party wants to find its way, it should look at what’s actually resonating with voters right now. Enter Zohran Mamdani, whose upset win in the New York City mayoral primary wasn’t just about being progressive—it was about being clear, direct, and relentlessly focused on the issues that matter most to everyday people. Here’s the twist: Mamdani is, in many ways, following the same playbook that made Donald Trump a political force in 2016. Trump didn’t win by offering a laundry list of policies or by focusing on his opponents. He won by hammering a few signature ideas—build the wall, bring back jobs, drain the swamp—and by positioning himself as the champion of the forgotten American, fighting against a rigged system. FLASHBACK: BIDEN ENDS BID FOR SECOND TERM IN WHITE HOUSE AS HE DROPS OUT OF HIS 2024 REMATCH WITH TRUMP  Mamdani’s approach is strikingly similar. He didn’t spend his campaign warning about the existential threat of his opponents. He didn’t make the race about personalities or abstract threats to democracy. Instead, he picked a handful of bold, signature policies—affordability, free public transit, city-owned grocery stores, universal childcare—and repeated them everywhere. He offered solutions, no matter how outlandish they sounded to critics. And most importantly, he made it clear he was fighting for the people against a system that’s broken and out of touch. DEMOCRATIC PARTY CATAPULTED INTO 'NEW PHASE OF A COLD WAR' IN ONE-YEAR WAKE OF BIDEN’S UNPRECEDENTED DROPOUT While some in the Democratic establishment rolled their eyes at Mamdani’s proposals, voters responded to his willingness to address their real, everyday concerns. He didn’t hide behind vague promises or focus on defeating a villain. He focused on making life better for the people he hoped to serve. Sound familiar? It should—because it’s the same "for the people, against the system" message that powered Trump’s rise.   A Stark Contrast—and a Lesson for Democrats The contrast couldn’t be clearer. Kamala Harris ran a campaign about defeating Trump and saving democracy, but never gave voters a reason to believe she had a plan for their paychecks, their rent, or their grocery bills. Mamdani, on the other hand, ran a campaign about solutions—however bold or controversial—and made sure voters knew he was listening to them, not just talking at them. DEMOCRATS' MAJOR MESSAGING CRISIS: THE PARTY OF OPPOSITION WITHOUT SOLUTIONS This is the lesson Democrats need to learn if they want to win back trust: Stop making every election about the other guy. Start making it about the people you want to represent. Offer real solutions, even if they’re ambitious. Show up, listen, and talk about what matters most to voters. And don’t be afraid to take a page from Trump’s playbook: a few clear promises, a message of fighting for the people, and a willingness to take on the establishment. A New Strategy: Democrats Enter the Lion’s Den There’s another shift happening, too. In a striking move, prominent Democrats are increasingly appearing on MAGA-friendly podcasts and platforms—think Joe Rogan, Breaking Points and others. This isn’t just about expanding their media footprint; it’s a calculated move to break out of the liberal echo chamber and engage directly with skeptical, even hostile, audiences. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION For years, both sides have talked past each other, stuck in their own echo chambers. Now, Democrats are stepping into what many see as enemy territory—not just to defend their ideas, but to actually listen and engage. It’s risky. Their base is nervous, MAGA listeners are skeptical, and the rest of America is asking, ‘What changed?’ But in a country this divided, real persuasion starts with real conversation—even if it means sitting down with your harshest critics. This isn’t about surrendering principles; it’s about showing up, being authentic, and proving you’re willing to have the tough conversations that move us forward. A Path Forward: Learn from Mamdani—and Trump The Democratic Party’s path forward is clear if it’s willing to learn from its own—and from its greatest rival.  Mamdani’s grassroots clarity and focus on real issues, echoing Trump’s original formula, offer a blueprint for success.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP The party needs to pick a message and stick to it, talk like real people, and show up for voters where they are—online, at their doors, and yes, even on podcasts where they might not get a warm welcome. The lesson is simple: Americans don’t want to be lectured or scared—they want to be heard and helped. Until Democrats trade their echo chamber for a kitchen table, and their talking points for real talk, they’ll keep losing ground.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM LEE HARTLEY CARTER

Brennan, Clapper, Comey exposed in Trump-Russia collusion hoax, declassified materials | Fox News

The release of declassified material has shed new light on the creation of the Russian collusion investigation and many of the names are crushingly familiar. Indeed, Congress is moving to "round up the usual suspects" in light of the new revelations. It is the story of the real Russian conspiracy: how high-ranking officials in the Obama Administration seeded this false claim with the help of an eager, unquestioning press corps. OBAMA-ERA OFFICIALS MUM ON ALLEGATIONS OF 'MANUFACTURED' INTELLIGENCE LAUNCHING TRUMP-RUSSIA PROBE Not surprisingly, the media, which spent years repeating the false Russian collusion claims, is doing a full-court press to kill the story. Yet, many of these key figures are retaining counsel in anticipation of the unfolding investigation. Many previously secured contracts with MSNBC or CNN, or book deals, where they doubled down on the false claims detailed in these new documents. Here are just a few of the usual suspects: John Brennan, former CIA director Brennan is arguably the most at risk in the new disclosures, which appear to contradict his prior testimony before Congress. On May 23, 2017, Brennan testified that the infamous Steele dossier "wasn’t part of the corpus of intelligence information that we had. It was not in any way used as a basis for the Intelligence Community Assessment that was done." However, the new material shows that Brennan was the key figure insisting on the inclusion of the Steele dossier in an intelligence assessment, suggesting that the Russians did influence the election in favor of Trump. Brennan not only intervened to include the dossier but overruled the CIA’s two most senior Russia experts, who said it "did not meet even the most basic tradecraft standards." One analyst recounted how "[Brennan] refused to remove it, and when confronted with the dossier’s main flaws, responded, ‘Yes, but doesn’t it ring true?’" Notably, it was Brennan who briefed Obama in 2016 about Hillary Clinton's plan to create a Russian conspiracy "to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service." Months later, it would be Brennan who actively incorporated the dossier secretly funded by Clinton's campaign. James Clapper, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former DNI under Obama, is expecting the worst and said that he has "lawyered up."  Clapper was in the briefing in July 2016 when Obama was told that Clinton was planning to create a Russian conspiracy narrative. In November 2016, Clapper received an assessment from the intelligence community that Russia was "probably not trying … to influence the election by using cyber means." He also received talking points from staff on Dec. 7, 2016, "Foreign adversaries did not use cyberattacks on election infrastructure to alter the US Presidential election outcome." On Dec. 9, 2016, another report stated that "Russian and criminal actors did not impact recent U.S. election results by conducting malicious cyber activities against election infrastructure." That Presidential Daily Brief was scheduled to be published on Dec. 9, but CDNI Clapper’s office stopped its publication "based on some new guidance." Clapper later joined Obama with Brennan, Susan Rice, John Kerry, Loretta Lynch, Andrew McCabe and others, in a meeting where a new assessment was ordered that would detail the "tools Moscow used and actions it took to influence the 2016 election." Brennan then reportedly handpicked the analysts who seemed to flip the earlier assessments without any credible intelligence.  In a 2018 interview with the Harvard Gazette, Clapper continued to spread the false narrative, referring to the high-confidence judgment that "Putin directly ordered the hacking and election interference." He added, "I think they [Russians] actually influenced the outcome."  Clapper later added to his tarnished legacy by signing the letter with more than 50 former intelligence officials dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 presidential election as having the [hall]marks of "Russian disinformation." James Comey, former FBI director James Comey would use this contrived intelligence to green-light the investigations that overwhelmed the first Trump term. The FBI was aware early that the Steele dossier was an unreliable political hit job funded by the Clinton campaign. Moreover, the CIA told the FBI that Trump associate Carter Page was a U.S. intelligence asset, not a Russian spy. The FBI ignored such countervailing intelligence, violated protocols, and lied to a federal court to maintain the Russian investigation.  In an interview with Fox's Bret Baier, Comey was asked about the lack of evidence of "Russian collusion." Comey dismissed the question by saying "collusion's not a word that I'm familiar with." Putting aside the lunacy of that statement, Comey then says the question is whether Americans were "in cahoots with the foreign intelligence activities." It appears "cahoots" is a word he is familiar with. He then denied knowing, in April 2018, that the Clinton campaign had funded the report. Comey routinely seems unfamiliar with terms or facts that contradicted his investigating Trump, even years later. Comey repeatedly testified to a lack of memory on key decisions made in the Russian investigation. However, documents show that it was Comey who pushed back on a planned statement by Clapper, stating that they had not determined the dossier to be reliable. Andrew McCabe, former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, now a CNN contributor, was fired after career Justice Department officials found that the former acting FBI director not only lied to investigators but deserved to be fired. That recommendation was reportedly embraced by the career officials in the inspector general’s office. He was accused of lying four times, including twice under oath.   Not surprisingly, McCabe makes appearances in the new disclosures. He is not only present at critical meetings, but it also appears that McCabe was allegedly responsible for blocking congressional investigators from interviewing the FBI analysts who supported Brennan and drafters of the controversial ICA. Congress alleged that at least 30 FBI employees associated with the dossier were walled off by McCabe. These and other names are not new. As the media was spreading the false narrative of Russian collusion, many of these figures knew that there was no evidence of such collusion. They said nothing. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION Instead, after Obama ordered a new assessment effectively flipping the conclusions of the earlier assessment, anonymous sources leaked the false narrative to the media, which eagerly ran with the story. While leaks of the false narrative were rampant, none of the actual facts were leaked to the media. In the meantime, figures like then Rep. Adam Schiff, now a Democratic senator from California, continued to claim, even after Special Counsel Robert Mueller rejected evidence of collusion, that he had secret evidence to the contrary in the House Intelligence Committee. Schiff never revealed that evidence, and the public now knows that the intelligence community rejected the collusion claims from the outset. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP The public is now learning about the real Russian conspiracy and its key players. It was the most infamous -- and successful -- political hit job in history. The same media that pushed the false claims are now, again, imposing a news blackout as they did with the Hunter Biden laptop. The problem is that the truth, like water, tends to find a way out. That trickle just turned into a flood for the architects of the Russian collusion hoax. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM JONATHAN TURLEY

The rise and fall of John Brennan
The Hill
Even if he is not criminally charged, his past statements will remain an indictment of his role in history.

In 1980, a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin saw an ad for the Central Intelligence Agency on a bus.  John Brennan decided to apply, thinking that such a job would satisfy his "wanderlust." This month, the "wanderlust" of John Brennan came to an end, as the former CIA director stands accused of false testimony regarding the Russian collusion investigation. Ironically, Brennan was first selected for his honesty — at least in part. During his entry polygraph, Brennan admitted that he had voted for the communist party candidate for president in 1976. He was impressed that the agency took him anyway. That honest young man seems like a faint and tragic echo of the man today. When Obama picked Brennan to be the CIA director, he had become the ultimate Democratic insider and loyalist. And it would be choosing loyalty over honesty that would prove Brennan's undoing. Newly declassified information contradicts Brennan's testimony before Congress on the origins of the now-debunked Russian collusion conspiracy theory. There is a particular focus on the intelligence community assessment commissioned by President Barack Obama in December 2016, which suggested that Russia had interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help Donald Trump. Obama ordered the assessment after a prior assessment found no evidence of collusion or influence on the election in Trump's favor. But Obama's White House effectively quashed that finding from seasoned CIA analysts. To create a new version, Brennan handpicked new analysts, who effectively flipped the earlier finding on its head without any credible basis in the record. The new assessment relied, to a significant degree, on the Steele dossier, a widely discredited report paid for by Hillary Clinton's campaign that contained unfounded allegations about Trump. In testimony on May 23, 2017, Brennan claimed that the Steele dossier “wasn’t part of the corpus of intelligence information that we had. It was not in any way used as a basis for the Intelligence Community Assessment that was done.” In short, Brennan dismissed any reliance on the dossier. Yet in the material now declassified, Brennan is shown not just discussing the dossier but insisting upon its inclusion in the new assessment Obama had requested. Indeed, he expressly overruled the CIA’s two most senior Russia experts, who said it “did not meet even the most basic tradecraft standards.” Analysts were appalled by the use of the Steele dossier and complained that it “ran counter to fundamental tradecraft principles and ultimately undermined the credibility of a key judgment.” One CIA analyst told investigators that “[Brennan] refused to remove it, and when confronted with the dossier’s main flaws, [Brennan] responded, ‘Yes, but doesn’t it ring true?’”Brennan expressly ordered its inclusion in the assessment. It would appear not just in an annex but in the main body of the assessment. The timeline here is important. In July 2016, Brennan briefed former President Obama on Hillary Clinton’s “plan” to tie then-candidate Trump to Russia as “a means of distracting the public from her use of a private email server.” The original Russia investigation — funded by Clinton's campaign — was launched days after this briefing. The resulting Steele Dossier's funding was hidden as a legal expense by the Clinton campaign's general counsel, Marc Elias. So Brennan and the Obama Administration knew in advance about the planned political hit job. Yet, only months later, Brennan would intervene to force the dossier's inclusion in version 2.0 of the intelligence assessment. Unnamed officials then leaked false information to the media about non-existent intelligence implicating Trump.  Keep in mind that Obama's ordering of the new assessment was occurring at the very end of his term. There was a rush to complete the report before Trump took office after defeating Hillary Clinton. The effort seeded the Russian collusion hoax that would consume much of Trump's first term. In other words, it worked. However, it required the involvement of John Brennan, as well as then-FBI Director James Comey. As time went on, Brennan continued to deny prior knowledge of the dossier. He would later become a paid contributor for MSNBC and, in 2018, insisted that he first heard “just snippets about” the dossier in the “late summer of 2016.” As an MSNBC regular, Brennan accused Trump of "treason," to the delight of the network hosts and viewers. (He later tried to insist that, when he called Trump's actions "nothing short of treasonous," he did not actually mean that Trump had "committed treason.") Whatever professional integrity Brennan had left after that, he set it aside in joining more than 50 former intelligence officials in signing a now-infamous letter dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 presidential election as likely “Russian disinformation.”  Joining him on the letter was former Obama Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who says that he has now "lawyered up" in anticipation of potential criminal allegations. The laptop, of course, was later found to be authentic and incriminating for Hunter Biden. Back in 2016 and in the years that followed, this must have seemed to Brennan like just another CIA operation with "plausible deniability." After all, he knew that he had the Biden administration and the media watching his back. Of course, the public would ultimately reject these hit jobs, not only reelecting Trump but also giving Republicans full control of Congress. Brennan may be protected from perjury charges by the five-year statute of limitations. However, he is likely to be called again before Congress and asked the same questions. Even if he is not criminally charged, his past statements will remain an indictment of his role in history. What is now clear is that high-level officials dismissed intelligence and evidence in order to create and spread the Russian collusion conspiracy as widely as they could. Their politicization of intelligence was raw and wrong. It succeeded only because it was an "all-hands-on-deck" effort, from the Obama White House to the CIA, the FBI, and the media. The rise and fall of John Brennan is an all-too-familiar Beltway tragedy. People do not lose their idealism in this city in grand moments of corruption. It starts with small lies that steadily reduce your resistance until the biggest lies become happenstance. It can create a type of self-deception as one treats lies as a moral option for the sake of the greater good. In “A Man for All Seasons,” Sir Thomas More is asked by his loving daughter Meg to sign a false affidavit to save his own life. More tells her, "When a man takes an oath, he's holding his own self in his own hands like water, and if he opens his fingers then, he needn't hope to find himself again." In Washington, power tends to loosen fingers over time, and the truth drips out to the point that little recognizable remains. That is the true tragedy. For Brennan, what began as a young man's wanderlust ended in a quagmire of contradictions and deceit.  Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro professor of public interest law at George Washington University and the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.”

Many People Have No Idea Where Oil Actually Comes From. It's Not Dinosaurs
IFLScience
No, your car isn’t running on liquefied dinosaurs.

At some point, you have probably heard somewhere that oil comes from dinosaurs, as if every time you fill up at the gas station, you are pumping refined velociraptor into your Volvo. It’s a vivid image, but it’s not true. Despite how widespread the belief is, oil isn’t made from decomposed dinosaurs. “For some strange reason, the idea that oil comes from dinosaurs has stuck with many people," geologist Reidar Müller from the University of Oslo explained to Science Norway. "But oil comes from trillions of tiny algae and plankton." As algae and plankton died tens to hundreds of millions of years ago, they sank to the bottom of the sea, where they accumulated and were buried by layers and layers of sediment. Eventually, after millions of years in a high-pressure and low-oxygen environment, the algae and plankton got " cooked " and turned into that sticky black oil we humans apparently can't get enough of, despite the threat of a climate emergency. From here, it seeps upwards until it hits rock it can't make it through, requiring humans to drill it out (or some other natural disaster to set it free again). While marine dinosaurs – or a T. Rex that discovered its arms weren't particularly well-adapted to swimming – may find themselves on the bottom of the ocean after death, it's unlikely they would get converted into oil themselves. This is partly because an oxygen-deprived environment is needed to convert organic matter into oil. Once dead, they would have become a meal for smaller aquatic creatures, picking them apart until they got down to the bones, long before they could be buried. Now to explain why, "if dinosaurs actually existed", their bones aren't everywhere. An earlier version of this story was published in 2023.
