Despite Protests, Elon Musk Secures Air Permit for xAI
WIRED
Elon Muskās xAI gas turbines get official approval, even as civil rights groups prepare to sue over alleged Clean Air Act violations.
The Shelby County Health Department released an air permit for the xAI project Wednesday, after receiving hundreds of public comments. The news was first reported by the Daily Memphian. In June, the Memphis Chamber of Commerce announced that xAI had chosen a site in Memphis to build its new supercomputer. The companyās website boasts that it was able to build the supercomputer, Colossus, in just 122 days. That speed was due in part to the mobile gas turbines the company quickly began installing at the campus, the site of a former manufacturing facility. Colossus allowed xAI to quickly catch up to rivals OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in building cutting-edge artificial intelligence. It was built using 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, making it likely the worldās largest supercomputer. xAIās Memphis campus is located in a predominantly Black community known as Boxtown which has been historically burdened with industrial projects that cause pollution. Gas turbines like the ones xAI is using in Memphis can be a significant source of harmful emissions, like nitrogen oxides, which create smog. Memphis already has some of the highest child asthma rates in Tennessee. Since xAI began running its turbines, residents have repeatedly met and rallied against the project. āI am horrified but not surprised,ā says KeShaun Pearson, the leader of Memphis Community Against Pollution. āThe flagrant violation of the Clean Air Act and the disregard for our human right to clean air, by xAIās burning of illegal methane turbines, has been stamped as permissible by the Shelby County Health Department. Over 1,000 people submitted public comments demanding protection and got passed over for a billionaireās ambitious experiment.ā Under the Clean Air Act, āmajorā sources of emissionsālike a cluster of gas turbinesāneed a permit, known as a Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit. However, Shelby County Health Department officials told local reporters in August that this wasnāt necessary for xAI since its turbines werenāt designed to be permanent. Amid mounting local opposition, xAI finally applied for a permit with the Shelby County Health Department in January, months after it first began running the turbines. Last month, the NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) announced that they intended to sue xAI for allegedly violating the Clean Air Act. āThe decision to give xAI an air permit for its polluting gas turbines flies in the face of the hundreds of Memphians who spoke out against the companyās permit request,ā said SELC senior attorney Amanda Garcia in a press release. āInstead of confronting long-standing air pollution problems in South Memphis, the Shelby County Health Department is turning a blind eye to obvious Clean Air Act violations in order to allow another polluter to set up shop in this already-overburdened community without appropriate protections.ā The new permit from the health department allows the company to operate 15 turbines on the site until 2027. In June, Memphis mayor Paul Young wrote an op-ed in the Tennessee Commercial Appeal that noted xAI was currently operating 21 turbines. SELC says that aerial footage it took in April, however, showed as many as 35 turbines operating at the site. xAI did not immediately respond to WIREDās request for comment, including questions about how many turbines it is currently operating at the facility. Shelby County did not immediately respond to a request for comment. āxAI welcomes todayās decision by the Shelby County Health Department,ā the company said in a statement posted to X. āOur onsite power generation will be equipped with state-of-the-art emissions control technology, making this facility the lowest emitting of its kind in the country. We look forward to being a valued partner to the Memphis Community for years to come.ā An environmental consultant for xAI told the Commercial Appeal that the turbines would be equipped with emissions-reduction technology, as required by the permit. When asked if it would continue with the lawsuit, SELC said it was āevaluating [its] options.ā Activists signaled that they were ready to contest the decision. āThe people are awake and ready to fight back,ā Pearson told WIRED. āYou can expect to see an appeal!ā In May, Sharon Wilson, a certified optical gas imaging thermographer, traveled to Memphis to film emissions from the site with a special optical gas imaging camera that records usually invisible emissions. Wilson tracks leaks from facilities in the Permian Basin, one of the worldās most prolific oil- and gas-producing regions, in Texas. She alleged to WIRED that what she saw in Memphis was one of the densest clouds of emissions sheād ever seen. āI expected to see the typical power plant type of pollution that I see,ā she says. āWhat I saw was way worse than what I expected.ā Updated 7-3-2025 2:15 pm BST: Information from xAIās public statement on X was added. Updated 7-3-2025 5:50 pm BST: Details of a statement made by an environmental consultant for xAI to the Tennessee Commercial Appeal were added.|

JONATHAN TURLEY: Why NYC's Zohran Mamdani looks more and more like a hardcore Marxist
Fox News
NYC Democratic mayoral primary winner Zohran Mamdani's political views reveal statements about 'seizing the means of production' and sugges Marxist leanings beyond socialism.
Zohran Mamdani was officially certified as the winner of the June 24 New York City Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday. He defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on his way to a victory that is still sending shockwaves through the Democratic Party establishment and beyond. Now, the debate rages over who Mamdani really is. Is he antisemitic or just pro-Palestinian? Is he anti-ICE or just pro-immigrant? However, one thing seems to be increasingly clear. Mamdani is a serious Marxist and that should concern anyone in New York City. Recently, PolitiFact declared that it was "false" that Zohran Mamdani is a "communist." This was in response to President Donald Trump's calling him a "100% Communist Lunatic" on Truth Social. However, while we can quibble over whether the term "communist" is supported by past statements, it appears that Mamdani is likely a Marxist. MAMDANI OFFICIALLY WINS NYC DEM PRIMARY BY 12 POINTS OVER CUOMO, WHO'S STAYING IN THE RACE FOR NOW PolitiFact characterized the use of the label by Trump and others as a "red scare tactic that has existed in U.S. politics for decades." For those who are center-right in American politics, it may have seemed a tad ironic since conservatives and libertarians are routinely called "fascists" and the left has engaged in McCarthy-like tactics to blacklist and question the loyalty those with opposing views. That is rarely the subject of "fact checks." I have repeatedly discussed the biased and sometimes false conclusions of PolitiFact (here, here, and here). On this occasion, PolitiFact may have once again been too quick on the trigger to denounce Trump and conservatives over the characterizations of Mamdani's political and economic views. CITY-RUN GROCERY STORES, DEFUNDING POLICE, SAFE INJECTION SITES: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NYC'S NEXT POTENTIAL MAYOR First, I have not joined those who have called Mamdani a "communist" as opposed to a "socialist" because these terms are interpreted in wildly different ways. For example, despite being a great critic of Mamdani and his views, I have not seen Mamdani advocating for single-party control over the political system or the complete centralization of the economy under government control. However, it appears that Mamdani may be a Marxist, based on recently revealed comments he has made. In one speech before the Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, Mamdani even states matter-of-factly how one of the goals is to "seize the means of production" in America. "Right now, if we're talking about the cancellation of student debt, if we're talking about Medicare for all, you know, these are issues which have the groundswell of popular support across this country. But then there are also other issues that we firmly believe in, whether it's BDS or whether it is the end goal of seizing the means of production, where we do not have the same level of support at this very moment." NYC'S SHOCKING SOCIALIST VICTORY IS A DIRE WARNING FOR THE RIGHT That does not sound like soft socialism, but fairly hardcore Marxism. It also contradicts PolitiFact's statement that "Mamdaniās platform is not akin to communism, a system of government which calls for government takeover of private property and control of industry." To his credit, Mamdani is not denying that he opposes capitalism and wants to eliminate all billionaires. (He is not clear where millionaires might face their own cutoff for excessive wealth). Mamdani is the perfect product of the extreme American left. He emerged from the Hollywood and academic environs where extreme views are all the rage. He is the son of Professor Mahmood Mamdani, a far-left professor, and Mira Nair, a liberal Indian-American filmmaker. His father teaches "post-colonial" subjects at Columbia University. VIDEO SURFACES OF MAMDANI USING SLOGAN ROOTED IN COMMUNIST REVOLUTIONARY LANGUAGE Mamdani is the prototype of what some of us have been writing about regarding the radicalization of higher education, particularly at Americaās elite colleges and universities. He graduated in 2014 from the elite Bowdoin College with a bachelor's degree in African studies. These schools are now largely devoid of conservative faculty members. Scholars generally run from the left to the far left. Polls show increasing support among young people for socialism and even communism. Notably, Mamdani received significant support in the primary from wealthy and young college-educated voters. To put it simply, it is cool to be socialist among generations who did not witness the economic failures of socialist systems in the 20th Century in countries like Great Britain and France. They did not witness former communist countries turning to capitalism to rescue their failing economies. MAMDANI'S POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE ROCKS DEMOCRATS, DIVIDING PARTY ON PATH FORWARD Mamdani's victory in the Democratic primary was fueled by promises of free buses, free healthcare, free daycare, as well as city-run grocery stores. He even promised to "make Halal eight bucks again." It is true that most countries, including the United States, have long embraced social welfare systems. It is also true that some programs once denounced as socialism are now considered mainstream. However, Mamdani's categorical opposition to capitalism and his references to seizing control of the means of production suggest more extreme Marxist views. Mamdani has tried to downplay fears over his views after his victory, stating: "When we talk about my politics, you know, I call myself a Democratic socialist in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. [Martin Luther] King from decades ago, who said, āCall it democracy, call it Democratic-Socialism, there has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of Godās children in this country.'" CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION It is hard to "call it Democratic-Socialism" when you are talking about seizing control of the means of production and opposing capitalism. It suggests that his vision of a "greater distribution of wealth" is far more radical than anything Dr. King was referencing. Mamdani would not be the first child from an affluent, privileged background to embrace Marxism. In my forthcoming book, "Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution," (Simon & Schuster, Feb.3, 2026) I examine how revolutionaries, from the French Revolution to contemporary movements, have often come from the elite or privileged classes. I discuss the current radicalization in the U.S. in exploring the future of American democracy in the 21st Century. There is a full-court press to dismiss questions about Mamdani's philosophical views by many in the legacy media and academia. After all, as Mamdani noted that on "issues that we firmly believe in [like] the end goal of seizing the means of production... we do not have the same level of support at this very moment." That support is growing by maintaining a cocoon of ambiguity. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP There is a good-faith debate about whether the existing record supports the claim that Mamdani is a communist. However, there is ample reason to suggest that he is a Marxist. That should be a matter of significant concern, particularly as the possible head of government in the world's greatest financial center. Marx once said in frustration that "if anything is certain, it is that I myself am not a Marxist." Perhaps, but New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has all the makings of a hardcore Marxist. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM JONATHAN TURLEY|
