Inside the AI Party at the End of the World
WIRED
At a mansion overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, a group of AI insiders met to debate one unsettling question: If humanity ends, what comes next?
The Sunday afternoon symposium, called âWorthy Successor,â revolved around a provocative idea from entrepreneur Daniel Faggella: The âmoral aimâ of advanced AI should be to create a form of intelligence so powerful and wise that âyou would gladly prefer that it (not humanity) determine the future path of life itself.â Faggella made the theme clear in his invitation. âThis event is very much focused on posthuman transition,â he wrote to me via X DMs. âNot on AGI that eternally serves as a tool for humanity.â A party filled with futuristic fantasies, where attendees discuss the end of humanity as a logistics problem rather than a metaphorical one, could be described as niche. If you live in San Francisco and work in AI, then this is a typical Sunday. About 100 guests nursed nonalcoholic cocktails and nibbled on cheese plates near floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Pacific ocean before gathering to hear three talks on the future of intelligence. One attendee sported a shirt that said âKurzweil was right,â seemingly a reference to Ray Kurzweil, the futurist who predicted machines will surpass human intelligence in the coming years. Another wore a shirt that said âdoes this help us get to safe AGI?â accompanied by a thinking face emoji. Faggella told WIRED that he threw this event because âthe big labs, the people that know that AGI is likely to end humanity, don't talk about it because the incentives don't permit itâ and referenced early comments from tech leaders like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Demis Hassabis, who âwere all pretty frank about the possibility of AGI killing us all.â Now that the incentives are to compete, he says, âthey're all racing full bore to build it.â (To be fair, Musk still talks about the risks associated with advanced AI, though this hasnât stopped him from racing ahead). On LinkedIn, Faggella boasted a star-studded guest list, with AI founders, researchers from all the top Western AI labs, and âmost of the important philosophical thinkers on AGI.â The first speaker, Ginevera Davis, a writer based in New York, warned that human values might be impossible to translate to AI. Machines may never understand what itâs like to be conscious, she said, and trying to hard-code human preferences into future systems may be shortsighted. Instead, she proposed a lofty-sounding idea called âcosmic alignmentââbuilding AI that can seek out deeper, more universal values we havenât yet discovered. Her slides often showed a seemingly AI-generated image of a techno-utopia, with a group of humans gathered on a grass knoll overlooking a futuristic city in the distance. Critics of machine consciousness will say that large language models are simply stochastic parrotsâa metaphor coined by a group of researchers, some of whom worked at Google, who wrote in a famous paper that LLMs do not actually understand language and are only probabilistic machines. But that debate wasnât part of the symposium, where speakers took as a given the idea that superintelligence is coming, and fast. By the second talk, the room was fully engaged. Attendees sat cross-legged on the wood floor, scribbling notes. A philosopher named Michael Edward Johnson took the mic and argued that we all have an intuition that radical technological change is imminent, but we lack a principled framework for dealing with the shiftâespecially as it relates to human values. He said that if consciousness is âthe home of value,â then building AI without fully understanding consciousness is a dangerous gamble. We risk either enslaving something that can suffer or trusting something that canât. (This idea relies on a similar premise to machine consciousness and is also hotly debated.) Rather than forcing AI to follow human commands forever, he proposed a more ambitious goal: teaching both humans and our machines to pursue âthe good.â (He didnât share a precise definition of what âthe goodâ is, but he insists it isnât mystical and hopes it can be defined scientifically.) Finally, Faggella took the stage. He believes humanity wonât last forever in its current form and that we have a responsibility to design a successor, not just one that survives but one that can create new kinds of meaning and value. He pointed to two traits this successor must have: consciousness and âautopoiesis,â the ability to evolve and generate new experiences. Citing philosophers like Baruch Spinoza and Friedrich Nietzsche, he argued that most value in the universe is still undiscovered and that our job is not to cling to the old but to build something capable of uncovering what comes next. This, he said, is the heart of what he calls âaxiological cosmism,â a worldview where the purpose of intelligence is to expand the space of whatâs possible and valuable rather than merely serve human needs. He warned that the AGI race today is reckless and that humanity may not be ready for what it's building. But if we do it right, he said, AI wonât just inherit the Earthâit might inherit the universeâs potential for meaning itself. During a break between panels and the Q&A, clusters of guests debated topics like the AI race between the US and China. I chatted with the CEO of an AI startup who argued that, of course, there are other forms of intelligence in the galaxy. Whatever weâre building here is trivial compared to what must already exist beyond the Milky Way. At the end of the event, some guests poured out of the mansion and into Ubers and Waymos, while many stuck around to continue talking. "This is not an advocacy group for the destruction of man,â Faggella told me. âThis is an advocacy group for the slowing down of AI progress, if anything, to make sure we're going in the right direction.â|

Nationwide protests erupted across the US following federal immigration raids in Los Angeles, prompting President Trump to deploy thousands of troops, triggering widespread clashes, curfews, mass arrests, and legal battles over military intervention.
Nationwide protests broke out in the US after federal immigration raids in Los Angeles led to dozens of arrests, sparking outrage over what many described as militarised enforcement and civil rights violations. President Donald Trump deployed thousands of troops and defended the move as necessary to restore order, while hinting at invoking the Insurrection Act . Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared an emergency and imposed a curfew , criticizing the militaryâs limited role. California Governor Gavin Newsom challenged the deployment in court, escalating tensions with the White House. As demonstrations spread to over a dozen cities. Police clashes, mass arrests, and growing political opposition continue. Here are 10 key developments from the nationwide unrest sparked by immigration raids and the federal crackdown that followed. 1. Trump deploys troops, defends action US President Donald Trump deployed over 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles amid protests , saying on Truth Social: âIf our troops didnât go into Los Angeles, it would be burning to the ground right now.â At Fort Bragg, he labeled protesters âanimalsâ and âa foreign enemy,â vowing to âliberate Los Angeles.â Demonstrations began Friday after federal immigration agents arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. Protesters blocked a major freeway and set vehicles ablaze. Police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash-bang grenades. 2. Mayor declares emergency, sets curfew Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency and imposed a nightly curfew: âWe reached a tipping pointâ after 23 businesses were looted, she said. The curfew covers a 1-square-mile downtown area and excludes residents, media, and emergency personnel. 3. Mayor questions military role Bass criticised Trumpâs claim that troops saved the city: âThe National Guard didnât even arrive until Sunday.â âThey are stationary at the federal building⊠not doing crowd control.â She added: âWhat are the Marines going to do? Thatâs a good question.â 4. Trump mulls Insurrection Act Trump left open the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act : âIf thereâs an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. Weâll see. But I can tell you last night was terrible, and the night before that was terrible,â Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. This law allows the president to use military force within the US in extreme circumstances. 5. Gov. Newsom pushes back, goes to court California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trumpâs actions, calling them an âassault on democracy.â He filed an emergency legal motion to halt military assistance in immigration enforcement: âCalifornia may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next.â 6. ICE and Guard presence expands Photos released by ICE showed National Guard troops protecting officers during raids. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted: âICE will continue to enforce the law.â 7. Downtown LA: 197 arrests, 7 officers hurt LAPD made 197 arrests on Tuesday (June 10), including 67 for blocking the 101 freeway. Charges included vandalism, looting, assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted murder (Molotov cocktail). Seven officers were injured, two hospitalised and released. 8. Protests spread nationwide Rallies erupted in Seattle, Austin, Chicago, NYC, and D.C. Arrests were made in New York, and Austin police used chemical irritants. Saturdayâs âNo Kings Dayâ protests are planned to coincide with Trumpâs military parade. Earlier Tuesday, Trump warned that more immigration raids were coming and said any future protestsâincluding those at the upcoming paradeâwould be met with an even stronger response. If they do, Trump said, âthey will be met with very big force.â âI havenât even heard about a protest but you know, this is people that hate our country. But they will be met with very heavy force.â 9. Demonstrations span across US cities Nationwide protests erupted against ICE raids and immigration policies and police responded with arrests, tear gas, and pepper spray. Philadelphia About 150 protesters marched from the Federal Detention Center to ICE headquarters and back, with some using bicycles to block roads. Police arrested 15 people, citing disorderly conduct and one case of aggravated assault. Two officers and two protesters sustained minor injuries. San Francisco Roughly 200 demonstrators rallied outside the Immigration Court Tuesday after two nights of unrest that saw over 150 arrests and injuries to police. âViolence, especially against SFPD officers, will never be tolerated,â police said, though Mondayâs march was described as âoverwhelmingly peaceful.â Seattle About 50 people protested outside the immigration court, chanting anti-ICE slogans. Legal observers and media were denied court access. New York City Crowds in lower Manhattan rallied near federal immigration buildings. Chants like âICE out of New Yorkâ rang out amid heavy police presence. Several protesters were taken into custody, though charges werenât immediately released. Chicago Protesters marched through downtown calling for an end to deportations and federal military deployment . A car drove through the crowd at one point, but no injuries were confirmed. Denver Protesters with anti-ICE signs gathered at the state capitol and split into groups to block traffic. Police maintained minimal presence initially, later monitoring from behind. Santa Ana (CA) A small crowd demonstrated near the Civic Center as cleanup crews removed graffiti and debris. Armed National Guard troops controlled access to federal buildings. A counter-protester in MAGA gear exchanged words with the crowd. San Antonio Texas National Guard was deployed in anticipation of protests. âSoldiers are on standby in areas where mass demonstrations are planned,â said Gov. Greg Abbottâs office. Austin Protests turned violent as demonstrators defaced buildings and threw rocks. Police used pepper balls and tear gas. Four officers were injured, 13 people arrested. âPeaceful protest is welcome. Violence is not,â said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis. Dallas A bridge protest ended in a police crackdown after objects were thrown. One arrest was confirmed. âOnce you cross the line, you will be arrested,â Gov. Abbott warned. Boston Hundreds protested the arrest of union leader David Huerta. âProtect our immigrant neighbors,â one sign read. AFL-CIO President Chrissy Lynch said, âAn immigrant doesnât stand between an American worker and a good job, a billionaire does.â Washington, D.C. Union groups and lawmakers protested near the DOJ. Rep. Pramila Jayapal said, âEnough of these mass ICE raids⊠innocent people are being swept up and protesters are being met with tear gas and rubber bullets.â 10. $134 million price tag for military deployment The Pentagon confirmed the deployment cost at $134 million. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled continued use of troops inside the US: âWe will use every asset at our disposal to quell the violence and restore law and order,â Trump said.|
