Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced the United States will "aggressively revoke visas" from Chinese students, including "those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields." The U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to revoke the visas, and it will also "revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong," according to a statement from Rubio. "The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields," Rubio said on the social platform X. The announcement comes a day after the Trump administration directed U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide to pause scheduling visa interviews for international students as it mulls expanding "social media screening and vetting" for applicants. The State Department issued an internal cable Tuesday, signed by Rubio, stating that âeffective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued [separate telegram], which we anticipate in the coming days,â multiple outlets reported. Earlier this year, the administration revoked the visas of thousands of international students. Immigration and Customs Enforcement later restored more than 1,500 foreign student visa registrations in its reporting system. Last week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) moved to terminate Harvard Universityâs Student and Exchange Visitor Program, consequently barring the Ivy League school from enrolling international students. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said the international students at Harvard would need to transfer to another institution or risk jeopardizing their legal status. On Wednesday, President Trump suggested imposing a 15 percent cap on the percentage of foreign students that Harvard University and other U.S. higher education institutions can admit. The president, while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, suggested that international students take up too much of the student body and raised issues over some of the foreign students he called âtroublemakers.â âThese countries arenât helping us. Theyâre not investing in Harvard ⊠we are. So why would 31 percent â why would a number so big,â he said. âI think they should have a cap of maybe around 15 percent, not 31 percent.â âWe have people [who] want to go to Harvard and other schools, [but] they canât get in because we have foreign students there. But I want to make sure that the foreign students are people that can love our country. We donât want to see shopping centers exploding. We donât want to see the kind of riots that you had,â Trump said. âAnd Iâll tell you what, many of those students didnât go anywhere. Many of those students were troublemakers caused by the radical left lunatics in this country.â He also said, without elaborating, that he doesnât want âradical peopleâ coming to U.S. as students and âmaking trouble in our country.â Updated at 10:03 p.m. EDT|

A Scientist Says Humans Will Go Backwards in Time Within Just 4 Years

Computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil believes humanity will achieve âlongevity escape velocityâ in just four years. The concept basically states that due to medical and technological advances, we will soon reach a point where our life expectancies lengthen by more than one year per year, effectively giving us time back on the clock. This is a very controversial concept, and one thatâeven if possibleâwould require widespread access to cutting edge medical technology.Death and taxesâthe twin inevitabilities of human life. At least, for the moment. If you ask some of the most prominent futurists in the world, death may not be on that (admittedly short and clichĂ©) list for much longer. Thereâs a controversial idea floating around the futurist community of âlongevity escape velocity.â It sounds super sci-fi, but itâs basically the idea that as our life extension technology gets better, our life expectancy could increase by more than we age over a set period of time. For example, as medical innovations continue to move forward, we would still age a year over the span of a year. But our life expectancy would go up by, say, a year and two months, meaning we would functionally get two months of life back. In March 2024, Ray Kurzweilâformer Google engineer and prominent AI-centric futuristâtold multiple outlets that he believed humanity would achieve longevity escape velocity by 2029. âPast 2029, youâll get back more than a year. Go backwards in time,â Kurzweil said in an interview with the venture capital and private equity firm Bessemer Venture Partners. âOnce you can get back at least a year, youâve reached longevity escape velocity.âThat may seem like a remarkably near future, but Kurzweil seems convinced, largely because medical advancement seems to be speeding up.âWe got the COVID vaccine out in ten months,â he said in the interview. âIt took two days to create it. Because we sequenced through several billion different mRNA sequences in two days. Thereâs many other advances happening. Weâre starting to see simulated biology being used and thatâs one of the reasons that weâre going to make so much progress in the next five years.âThereâs no denying that medical advancement has saved countless lives and demonstrably lengthened life expectancies, especially in the most developed parts of the world. But critically, âlife expectancyâ is not âlength of life,â and the concept of longevity escape velocity is focused on the former. Achieving this concept is not the same as achieving immortality.â[Achieving longevity escape velocity] doesnât guarantee you living forever,â Kurzweil said. âYou could have a 10 year old and you could compute that he's got many, many decades of longevity, but he could die tomorrow.âA major reason for that is the unpredictability of life. Unfortunately, weâre probably not, say, curing all cancers in the next four years, and cancer is a disease defined by the randomness of the mutations that cause it. Accidents are also a fact of life, though Kurzweil claims that through technological advances like self-driving cars, the odds of a deadly accident occurring will also go down rapidly in the near future. Kurzweil is well known in the tech world for his impressive track record of accurately predicting timelines for technological advances. He successfully predicted the proliferation of portable computers (i.e. cell phones and laptops) and WiFi, the existence of cloud computing, and that a computer would beat a chess champion at the game by 1998 (which happened in 1997), among many others. That said, heâs also been wrong many times over. No one can predict the future, even with all the data in the world at their fingertips. On top of that, itâs important to remember that, at its core, the achievement of longevity escape velocity is based on the statistical calculations of average life expectancies. If itâs even possible to achieve, it would not mean that everyone around the world would suddenly experience dramatically extended lives. That would require everyone to have access to the very height of cutting-edge medical technology and infrastructure, which is highly unlikely to happen in the span of four years. As an example of that unlikelihood, tuberculosisâa disease we have known how to treat and prevent for decadesâkills more people per year worldwide than any other infectious disease (with the exception of a three-year period in which it was surpassed by COVID-19). The existence of medical treatments and advances is not synonymous with their widespread implementation. Itâs true that medicine is advancing rapidly, as is technology. And if the past has anything to say about the future, those advances will likely continue to extend average life expectancies. But as enticing as the idea of longevity escape velocity is, itâs still just a prediction for now. Death and taxes, at this point in time, both remain inevitable.|

Amanda Askell (02:49:37) Itâs also funny if people think that about the Slack channel because Iâm like thatâs one of five or six different methods that I have for talking with Claude, and Iâm like, âYes, this is a tiny percentage of how much I talk with Claude.â One thing I really like about the character work is from the outset it was seen as an alignment piece of work and not something like a product consideration, which I think it actually does make Claude enjoyable to talk with, at least I hope so.
