Scott Pelley's commencement speech at Wake Forest University, where he took a veiled swipe at U.S President Donald Trump, has caused anger among conservatives
Conservatives are having a meltdown over a commencement speech that Scott Pelley gave at Wake Forest University . The CBS journalist gave an incandescent speech targeted at Donald Trump (without naming him) at the graduation of the university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on May 19. Scott was the commencement speaker at the event and within his speech he spoke about "freedom of speech is under attack" along with universities and journalism. He warned that there's an "insidious fear" spreading in America. "In this moment, this moment, this morning, our sacred rule of law is under attack," Pelley said. "Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack. And insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes and into our private thoughts, the fear to speak in America. If our government is, in Lincoln's phrase, 'Of the people, by the people, for the people,' then why are we afraid to speak?" The speech went viral and while Pelley did not mention Trump by name, his speech referenced current actions and policies by the Trump administration. The Trump administration is currently looking to withhold federal grants from Harvard and other universities for allegedly tolerating antisemitism and pushing leftist policies, as well as for schools with DEI ( Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs. Conservatives and fans of Trump were not happy with Pelley's speech as they lashed out online. "This self-important, sermonizing propagandist is what passes for a legacy media 'journalist,'" The Western Lensman said in part on their X formerly Twitter, attaching the footage. Radio host Adam Carolla wrote, "TDS [Trump Derangement Syndrome] hits narcissist especially hard." Curtis Houck, managing editor of the right-wing site NewsBusters, called Pelley "pompous." Another person wrote: "What a shame for the graduateâs [sic] to have to listen to a liar and hypocrite like Scott Pelley use their graduation to air his demented political views." But while conservatives were blasting Pelley, some people felt Pelley's speech was right-on with his speech. A person said: "Scott Pelley didnât hold back at Wake Forest. In a world full of bootlickers and bothsiders, be a Pelley. Speak truth. Defend democracy. Burn the gaslight down." Journalist wrote Brian Krassenstein wrote on X, "CBS reporter Scott Pelley: This is a warning that I fear many will look back on in five or six years and think 'he was so right'. If you havenât already shared this, please do." Trump is also in a legal battle with CBS News as he filed a lawsuit against the outlet accusing them of deceptively editing an 60 Minutes interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election. Pelley is one of the main reporters on the evening show. He called out parent company, Paramount Global, on April 27 on-air for their "new" supervising of the 60 Minutes' content amid their pending merger with Skydance Media that the Trump administration must approve and how former executive producer Bill Owens felt he was losing "the independence that honest journalism requires." Owens announced his resignation from 60 Minutes on April 22. In other parts of Scott's commencement speech he spoke touched upon the assault on journalism in the current administration. "Why attack universities? Why attack journalism? Because ignorance works for power," Pelley said in part. "First, make the truth seekers live in fear, sue the journalists and their companies for nothing. Then, send masked agents to abduct a college student who wrote an editorial in her college paper defending Palestinian rights and send her to a prison in Louisiana charged with nothing. Then move to destroy the law firms that stand up for the rights of others," he continued. "With that done, power can rewrite history with grotesque false narratives. They can make criminals heroes and heroes criminals. Power can change the definition of the words we use to describe reality. Diversity is now described as illegal. Equity is to be shunned. Inclusion is a dirty word. This is an old playbook, my friends. There's nothing new in this," he added.|

Many people may recognize the logo of Elon Musk's car brand, Tesla; however, not everyone knows what it means. There's actually a "hidden symbol" within the design
It's fair to say that most people have heard of Elon Musk 's car brand. The American multinational automotive and clean energy company works to design, manufacture and sell battery electric vehicles (BEVs). If you didn't know, the company was first incorporated by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003 as Tesla Motors , and the name acts as a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Then, in February 2004, Musk led Tesla's first funding round and became chairman of the company. Later in 2008, he was named as the company's chief executive officer; however; even after all this time, some people still don't know what the brand's logo means. The topic previously came up on Reddit when someone wrote: " Other than the obvious 'T', what does the Tesla logo represent? I've heard it resembles a particular part of the engine?" People were quick to chime in with their thoughts, and there were all sorts of theories. There is one clear answer though that not everyone understood at first. One person suggested: " The most plausible theory that I read was that it's part of a cross section of an induction motor." Another said: "It resembles a cat nose." A third replied: "I was trying to look this up yesterday but I never thought to ask here. I could not find much." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "It's fascinating to me how many plausible answers there are here. Whether it looks like a piece from an induction motor, or a power line, or a battery in an electrical schematic, or evokes the Model T, or is like Serbian axes, or even bears resemblance to Mr Tesla's face, it's clear that the logo is a great piece of design - regardless of whether it was intentional or not." While people have all sorts of thoughts and ideas, it looks like there is a more solid answer. In fact, Musk is reported to have cleared up the matter himself in the past. To cut a long story short, the Tesla logo is actually the cross-section of an electric motor, according to reports. The logo features a distinctive, futuristic-looking version of the letter "T." As reported by AutoPi , it was RO Studio who created the Tesla logo. Initially, it was designed to fit inside a shield symbol but, over time, they decided to axe the shield and go with the classic "T" as its mark. While it may just look like a "T", the logo is actually a reference to the company's products, at least that's what Tesla CEO Musk previously said in a tweet. It's intended to look like a cross-section of an electric motor. AutoPi says: "The main body of the 'T' represents one of the poles that protrude from the rotor of a motor, while the second line on top represents a piece of the stator. It creates a decent approximation of an electric-motor cross-section by repeating the Tesla logo in a circle, with the top of each 'T' facing outward." If you know little about Musk's relation to the company, he is a co-founder, CEO and the largest shareholder of Tesla. He holds a hefty stake in the company, and this was predicted to be at around 12.8% as of February 2025. Even though Musk is the biggest shareholder, Tesla is also owned by a variety of other investors. These include institutional investors such as Vanguard and BlackRock.|

Hot Farmers, Trad Wives, and an Immigrant Reality Show: Welcome to TVâs MAGA Era

Against the backdrop of Trumpâs anti-DEI agenda, Hollywood is seeing a resurgence in anti-woke conservative programming. Producers say reactionary politics will hurt an industry already in crisis.
The three women are among 32 contestants on the most recent season of Farmer Wants a Wife, Foxâs rustic spin on The Bachelor. They come from different backgrounds and have all sorts of interests, but their goals are ultimately the same: to settle down, get married, and have kids. While the women donât explicitly talk politics, their focus on traditional values fits into a genre of entertainment that is rapidly reshaping the industry: Welcome to Hollywoodâs MAGA reboot. Hollywood is in the midst of another evolution. Studios are releasing fewer movies every year. Broadcast and news ratings are in decline. Screenwriters are struggling to sell scripts as salaries for studio heads have skyrocketed. Television and feature film production in Los Angeles shrunk by 30 percent in the first quarter of 2025, compared with the previous year, according to a report by FilmLA. At the same time, Hollywood is also undergoing a resurgence in anti-woke conservative content thanks to the Trump administrationâs anti-DEI agenda. âMore conservative projects are getting greenlit,â says Colin Whelan, a former studio executive at TLC and founder of Conveyer Media, which has produced reality shows for Netflix, HGTV, and Investigation Discovery. âPeople are pitching more shows like that because they realize thatâs whatâs selling.â Maybe youâve also noticed the subtle changes on your TV screenâcontent that favors Christian values, heartland themes, or law-and-order style programming. Yellowstone, the Paramount drama about cattle ranchers in Montana, gained a massive audience during Trumpâs first presidency, routinely breaking ratings records, and has since spawned successful spinoffs. Tim Allenâs Shifting Gears, about a grumpy widower with manosphere viewpoints, is a ratings hit for Disneyâs linear broadcast audience, with âmore live viewers on average than The Conners season 7 and Abbott Elementary season 4,â according to ScreenRant. It pulled in 3.7 million viewers for its season one finale. Farmer Wants a Wife has held steady ratings, averaging 1.5 million viewers weekly, and works as easy counterprogramming to more raunchy dating fodder like Temptation Island and Too Hot to Handle (both on Netflix). In 2024, Trump Media and Technology Group launched a streaming service called Truth+, and the company made clear that it would prioritize ânews, Christian content, and family-friendly programming that is uncancelable by Big Tech,â a mandate that now seems to be shaping the look of Hollywood more and more. (The streaming service also features at least one documentaryâincluded among its most watched programs on the platform in Mayâpeddling conspiracy theories about âserpent or lizard-like aliens who are secretly wielding influence over the human race,â according to an investigation by Talking Points Memo.) In Trumpâs version of Hollywood, old-fashioned values are in vogue again. The Christian drama 7th Heaven, about a Protestant minister and his seven children that aired for 11 seasons on The WB (later The CW), is in early development at CBS Studios and will âfocus on a diverse family,â though itâs not clear what that means. Jessica Biel, who was in the original cast, is executive producing the reboot alongside Devon Franklin, a producer of faith-based films. Roseanne Barr, whose namesake show was canceled in 2018 after she posted a racist tweet about former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, is shopping a series that âsaves America with guns, the Bible, petty crime, and alcoholism,â she told Variety. Also returning to television screens this summer is Duck Dynasty, a duck-hunting reality show that ended in 2017. Itâs slated to air on A+E, which experienced its first big hit of the year with Ozark Law, a show that followed multiple police departments in the Missouri region. Duck Dynasty producer Rob Worsoff is in talks with the Department of Homeland Security about a reality show where âimmigrants compete to prove they are the most American,â according to The Wall Street Journal. Potential challenges include mining for gold or working on a Model T assembly line in Detroit. Whatâs happening is a âcultural recalibration,â says Carri Twigg, a founding partner and head of development at Culture House, the production company that created Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop and Hair Tales. The recalibration has led to a âgeneralized chillâ in the industry that has caused more diverse projects to suffer. âIâve heard from multiple executives that thereâs a noticeable hesitancy around content perceived as too progressive, especially if it centers non-white leads or tackles social issues explicitly. Even projects with mild inclusivity are getting flagged in internal discussions,â Twigg says. âColleagues have expressed frustration that kinds stories they were encouraged to pitch just a couple years ago are now getting passed on as like âtoo nicheâ or ânot resonant right nowâ by the same execs who once called them âvisionaryâ and âuniversal.ââ Twigg says there are two key reasons for the hesitancy. âThe political climate has emboldened executives who were always uncomfortable with the industry's post-2020 shifts. The power that DEI-era storytelling offered to historically excluded creators was unfamiliar, and in some corners, unwelcome.â The second, she says, is fear of reprisals from the administration. In February, Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr, who previously said he would end the agencyâs DEI initiatives if appointed, opened a probe into NBC parent company Comcast, and later Disney, promising to take action if the investigation uncovered âany programs that promote invidious forms of DEI discrimination.â Carr has since said that the FCC plans to look into broadcast network affiliation agreements to help âconstrain some of the power of national programmers.â According to Variety, Disney, Amazon, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery have all rolled back programs aimed at increasing diversity. Talk shows are also being encouraged to shift their programming. In a recent meeting with the cohosts of The View, the popular morning gabfest with Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic urged the women to soften their criticisms of Trump, saying âthe panel needed to broaden its conversations beyond its predominant focus on politics,â the Daily Beast reported. Disney CEO Bob Iger also suggested that the show âtone downâ its political rhetoric. One former executive at Amazon MGM Studios tells WIRED that Trumpâs anti-DEI agenda, whose impact on film and TV only seems to be growing more pronounced, is a part of the administrationâs Trojan-horse playbook to roll back civil rights. âItâs just the rhetoric theyâre using to articulate what they really believe and who they really are.â The White House did not respond to WIRED's request for comment. The anti-DEI backlash threatens to make Hollywood even more out of touch than it already is to younger audiences, who increasingly prefer TikTok and YouTube to traditional viewing formats. An estimated 50 percent of Gen Z identifies as non-white, and nearly 30 percent identify as LGBTQ+. âThese audiences arenât just asking for representationâthey expect it,â Twigg says. âIf the industry starts backing away from inclusive storytelling, it wonât just be regressiveâitâll be a bad business decision.â Original, inclusive storytelling is trending right now, as Sinners, Ryan Cooglerâs vampire drama, proved by becoming the biggest box office success story of the year so far, earning $316 million globally. Huluâs Paradise, about residents of a postapocalyptic town, and HBO Maxâs The Pitt, a medical drama that follows an emergency-room crew over a 15-hour shift, have also felt like watercooler moments at a time when the industry is starved for them. Beyond the cultural and commercial risks of a less diverse Hollywood, Twigg says there is a strategic one: Film and TV take years to develop and produce. âHitching your content strategy to a political moment that may not last through the next electionâor the next news cycleâis short-sighted,â she says. âThe stories being greenlit today will premiere in a future that may have swung back toward the very audiences currently being sidelined. If anything, the smartest strategy right now would be to build with resilience and relevance in mindânot reactionary politics.â Whelan says that in over 20 years as a television producer, he has taken the same approach, regardless of the political and social climates of the time: to create shows that âentertain and inspire and maybe teach.â In 2014, following stints at Syfy and TLC as a network executive, he applied that mindset to New Girls on the Block. It was the first follow-doc reality show with an all-trans cast. The series focused on a group of women in Kansas City, Missouri, who faced changing relationship dynamics in a society struggling to make space for trans women. The reality project he just wrapped probably sounds like a complete 180. It focuses on a Christian family who runs a ranch and takes in at-risk youth. But thereâs more to it, he says. âWhatâs interesting to me, having done it for so long, is I donât see a huge difference between a show about a group of all transgender women and a group of ranchers trying to help at-risk youth,â he says. âItâs two groups of really amazing people trying to change their lives for the better, and change the world around them for the better as well.â Tonality aside, fewer projects overall are moving forward this year, Whelan says, but that hasnât stopped genuinely good ideas from finding an audienceâno matter who sits in the Oval Office. âOzark Law would have sold regardless of the administration. The Netflix scripted series is all about breaking the law, so you know someoneâs gonna come up with the idea of enforcing it. Thatâs how we pitch reality shows,â he says, before admitting, âI wish I had thought of that.â|

Joseph Nye is dead, and the illusion of ethical power politics should die too

Nyeâs signature ideas â soft power, the liberal order, ethical realism â are artifacts of an age that is over.
Joseph Nye died earlier this month at the age of 88, and with him passes one of the most influential voices of post-Cold War American internationalism. The tributes have been swift and respectful, as they should be. The renowned Harvard professor was not only a gifted scholar but a consummate Washington insider, serving as assistant secretary of Defense for international security affairs in the Clinton administration. He bridged the worlds of academia and power like few others of his generation. Nyeâs concept of âsoft powerâ became gospel in the foreign policy establishment. His calls for an ethical foreign policy won plaudits from policymakers who wanted to believe that American primacy could be both virtuous and enduring. But now that the official remembrances have piled up, it is time to say something different. Nye was a man of ideas. His passing should invite not just mourning, but reevaluation. And the hard truth is that the world Nye helped interpret, shape and justify no longer exists. Nyeâs signature ideas â soft power, the liberal order, ethical realism â are artifacts of an age that is over. What remains is a harsher and more tragic world, one that calls not for the ethics of Harvard seminars but clarity, hard-nosed realism and morally unsettling truths. Letâs begin with the concept Nye made famous: soft power. In his telling, the ability to attract and co-opt, rather than coerce, was the future of global leadership. Cultural appeal, democratic norms and economic openness would draw others toward Americaâs orbit, making the world safer, more liberal and more cooperative. Nye did not reject hard power; he sought a synthesis, famously urging policymakers to wield âsmart powerâ â the judicious blend of persuasion and coercion. But soft power was never a strategy. It was a theory of influence in a world where U.S. cultural and economic hegemony was taken for granted. At its core, soft power depended on a set of illusions: that Americaâs values were universally attractive, that its economic system was the endpoint of development, that its leadership was benevolent rather than self-interested. These illusions worked, for a while, because there was no real alternative. In the unipolar moment of the 1990s, even critics of the U.S. had to live within the order it dominated. Soft power was, in truth, a polite name for power with no challengers. That world is gone. The appeal of American liberalism is weaker than it has been in decades. China offers a model of techno-authoritarian capitalism that has growing appeal across the Global South. Russia, for all its brutality, has demonstrated that hard power can still shape borders and revise status quos. Even U.S. allies no longer assume that Americaâs cultural gravity is irresistible. And at home, the U.S. is mired in political division, moral confusion and social decay. The foundations of soft power have cracked, and no amount of elite consensus can put them back together. To his credit, Nye tried to grapple with these changes. He remained a realist (at least in the academic sense), and his later writings explored how presidents might pursue ethical foreign policies in a world of limits. But this effort, too, ultimately fails. Nyeâs vision of âethical realismâ relied on the idea that Americaâs power could be used for moral ends â that statesmen could balance national interest with cosmopolitan responsibility, and that the exercise of power could be squared with the principles of justice. His final works urge policymakers to consider the intentions behind policy, the means by which it is pursued and the consequences it unleashes. But what if the world doesnât allow that kind of neat calculus? What if, as Thucydides wrote in the Melian Dialogue, âthe strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they mustâ? What if tragedy â not ethics â is the defining logic of international relations? That power always outruns virtue? That necessity, not morality, determines action in an anarchic world? Nye was too much a liberal, and too much a moralist, to follow this thought to its end. And so his ethical realism amounts to little more than a comforting fiction for elites desperate to believe that U.S. leadership still carries moral weight. The most damning critique of Nye, however, is not that he was wrong. It is that his ideas provided the intellectual scaffolding for an era of American overreach. Soft power lulled Washington into complacency about its real sources of strength. Ethical realism gave moral cover to disastrous interventions in Iraq, Libya and beyond. And the concept of âsmart powerâ became a euphemism for a bipartisan consensus that dressed up brute force in the language of benevolence. The wreckage of these policies can be seen around the world â from Kabul to Kyiv, from the South China Sea to the Sahel. Nyeâs legacy, however well-intentioned, cannot be separated from the failures that it helped legitimize. We are left with a need for a new realism â one not rooted in morality tales or campus abstractions, but in the grim realities of power, fear and ambition. Carl von Clausewitz reminds us that war is a continuation of politics by other means, not a failure of diplomacy. Machiavelli teaches that the appearance of virtue is often more important than its substance. And Thucydides shows that human nature and the structure of international politics make conflict all but inevitable. These are not comforting truths, but they are truths nonetheless. Nyeâs death marks the passing of an era â the final twilight of the American imperium imagined in the 1990s. It is fitting that we honor his contributions. He was a serious thinker, a patriot and a decent man. But let us not honor him with empty praise or uncritical nostalgia. Instead, letâs bury the illusions that his ideas inspired. The post-Cold War liberal order is gone and the dream of ethical hegemony has faded. In its place stands a world of multipolar competition, civilizational rivalry and structural disorder. This world will not be managed by soft power, nor redeemed by ethical realism. It will be shaped â if we are lucky â by hard choices, clear thinking and a new generation of statesmen unafraid to look tragedy in the face. That is the true task of our time. And that is the epitaph that Nyeâs legacy deserves.
