A string of unusual big cat sightings in Central Texas has reignited speculation about the possible return of a wild feline long believed to have vanished from the state. In Seguin, residents have taken to Facebook to report seeing a sleek, dark-colored feline with a long body roaming near Link Road and State Highway 46. The animal's description closely resembles that of a jaguarundi—a rare and elusive wild cat once native to South Texas. Although no sightings have been confirmed, the reports have sparked growing interest online. FOX San Antonio meteorologist Brad Sowder mentioned the sightings in a recent Facebook post, noting how rare the species is. In the comments, others claimed similar encounters in Uvalde, Del Rio, Chappell Hill, and Lake Jackson. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the last verified jaguarundi sighting in Texas was near Brownsville in 1986. The species is now believed to be extirpated—or locally extinct—in the state, though small populations still exist in parts of northern Mexico. Sleek and solitary, the jaguarundi is roughly the size of a large house cat, typically weighing between 8 and 16 pounds and growing up to 30 inches long. Their coats are solid-colored—either rusty brown or charcoal gray—and they're known for their low, weasel-like posture and secretive behavior. Unlike many other wildcats, jaguarundis are often active during daylight hours, especially around midday when they search for water. Even so, they're rarely seen. These cats favor dense, brushy habitats and usually avoid areas with significant human activity. So far, TPWD has not confirmed any official sightings as of Friday. While the reports are intriguing, wildlife experts say it's unlikely that a true jaguarundi has returned to the region. Rachel Malstaff, director of mammals at the San Antonio Zoo, told News 4 San Antonio that if the species is appearing farther north, habitat loss in northern Mexico could be driving the movement. "As those areas get clear cut for farming, for development, for people moving in, that displaces them from their native habitats," Malstaff said. "So that would be the likely cause of them moving somewhere where they don't generally live." Appearing on "Overtime with Bill Maher," an online aftershow that follows HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," Jennings laughed but didn't answer when the host tried multiple times to get him to say whether he's exploring a political bid in his home state. Jennings, 47, an ardent defender of President Trump, has been speculated among potential GOP hopefuls for the seat McConnell has held for more than four decades. McConnell, 83, confirmed in February that he won't seek an eighth term in 2026. Maher noted during his interview that Jennings has shown some of the telltale signs of preparation for a political campaign: He has a book coming out in December that was met with Trump's praise, and he has continued to live in Kentucky, despite commuting to New York City and Washington, D.C. for work. "It sounds like you’re running," Maher said, eliciting a chuckle from Jennings. The Daily Beast reported last month, citing an anonymous source, that Jennings told people during the White House Correspondents Dinner weekend that he would run for the Senate job only if Trump wants him to and that he would support whoever Trump backs in the race. U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) and 2023 GOP gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron, the state's former attorney general, have already launched campaigns to replace McConnell, while conservative businessman Nate Morris has acknowledged that he’s mulling a run and reportedly has been working with operatives aligned with Trump and Vice President Vance, Semafor reported.|
