President Donald Trump recently chimed in on California's high-speed rail funding, the infamous Alcatraz prison and a 100% tariff on foreign-made films.
President Donald Trump, as he often does, spent much of his week posting to social media, but this time, his focus was directed firmly on the Golden State. Trump floated multiple outlandish and potentially impossible ideas that could have major repercussions for California, including cutting high-speed rail funding, rebuilding an infamous prison and even implementing a 100% tariff on foreign-made films. It is not clear if any of the ideas will come to fruition, but Trump’s public barrage comes at a heightened moment, as California is in ongoing legal disputes with the Trump administration over a slew of policy actions he has already taken. Trump’s first declaration came on Sunday when he said that Alcatraz, the infamous former federal prison in San Francisco Bay, should no longer be a tourist attraction and should instead house the “most ruthless and violent offenders.” He said on Truth Social that he was directing the Federal Bureau of Prisons “to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt” island prison. That evening, he told reporters it was “just an idea” and “I think we’re going to do that.” It’s not clear if it’s possible for the island to be returned to an active prison. Alcatraz is currently a tourist attraction operated by the National Park Service and attracts around 1.6 million visitors annually, and returning it to an active prison could be a “logistical black hole,” SFGATE previously reported. On the same day of the Alcatraz announcement, the president surprised and confused Hollywood by declaring his interest in placing a 100% tariff on all movies “produced” overseas as a way to incentivize more domestic-made films. Elected officials and those in the industry said they have many unanswered questions as to how this will be implemented. He told reporters during a White House event on Monday that the film industry has been “decimated” by other countries and also blamed Gov. Gavin Newsom, calling him “grossly incompetent,” Politico reported. In a surprising change, Newsom appeared receptive to Trump’s desire to prop up the film industry. The longtime Trump foe responded Monday by suggesting a collaboration between California and the federal government to create a $7.5 billion federal film tax credit. “America continues to be a film powerhouse, and California is all in to bring more production here,” Newsom said in a statement Monday night, according to the New York Times. “We’re eager to partner with the Trump administration to further strengthen domestic production and Make America Film Again.” A White House spokesperson said no final decisions have been made on the film tariff as of Monday, the New York Times reported. Trump told reporters that he is “not looking to hurt the industry” and instead wants “to help the industry.” The film industry has been calling for a federal tax credit for years, but even with Trump and Newsom’s support, it’s still unlikely to happen, according to the Los Angeles Times. Then, in a final twist, Trump said late Tuesday that the federal government will not be paying for high-speed rail, a project that has been in progress since 2008. “That train is the worst cost overrun I’ve ever seen,” Trump told reporters during a press appearance with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. “It’s, like, totally out of control … this government is not going to pay.” California’s long delayed high-speed rail project has been political fodder for critics who say the unfinished railway is an indictment on the state government’s ability to govern. The project was approved by voters almost two decades ago, when it was envisioned as a bullet train that could travel between San Francisco and LA, but it has made little progress since then.
