How To Use Gemini AI To Summarize YouTube Videos
WIRED
Looking for the CliffsNotes of a lengthy YouTube video? This Gemini feature could be worth a try.
One of those might be summarizing YouTube videos. AI has already shown it can be a fairly reliable summarizer (although not always), and if you just need to extract a few salient points from a series of videos that are 15 or 30 minutes long, the time saved can quickly add up. Google Gemini has a new AI model, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, which can plug into Google apps including Google Search, Google Maps, and YouTube. The model is available to all Gemini users, paying or not, and we tested it out on a selection of clips using Gemini's web interface. How to Find the Feature If you open up Gemini on the web, start a new chat, and go to the model picker in the top left corner, you should see one labeled 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental). This is the one with the Google app connections built in, though most of the time you need to specify which app you want to use (when looking up a place on Google Maps, for instance). The model isn't difficult to find in the Gemini apps for Android or iOS either: If you tap the drop-down menu at the top of a new conversation (which should be labeled with the model you're currently using), you'll see the 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental) option available for selection. You'll probably find the feature a little easier to use on the web, where you can drag YouTube URLs between browser tabs for analysis, but you can get to it on mobile too. Besides analyzing YouTube videos, you can search for new content: Try asking for YouTube for videos about baseball highlights or science explainers, for example. Summarize Match Highlights To begin with, we put Gemini to work on a highlights package of last year's Super Bowl LIX highlightsâalmost 20 minutes of actionâto see what the AI would make of it. To begin with we just asked âWhat's happening in this game?â and in a few seconds we had details of the teams and who won (which the AI got right), and some key highlights. A follow-up question about the final score was answered correctly, but Gemini got the name of the scorer of the first touchdown wrong: The AI suggested it was Johan Dotson. Dotson was shown getting a touchdown in the highlights with the scores at 0-0, but it was ruled outâan example of the nuances that AI doesn't necessarily pick up on. Gemini did successfully identify when the Kansas City Chiefs got their first points, and even included a timestamp linking straight to the touchdown in the YouTube clip. It also got the name of the scorer right. It seems Gemini is heavily reliant on the commentary for sports clips, which isn't surprising. Summarize Video Contents Next, we tried putting Gemini up against a behind-the-scenes featurette for The Grand Budapest Hotel, directed by Wes Anderson. The clip runs to four-and-a-half minutes, and Gemini fired back some replies almost instantly: It identified the name of the film being talked about, and the main beats of the clip's narrative. However, it's all reliant on the audio (or the transcript) againâthere doesn't seem to be any analysis of the actual video contents. The AI couldn't say who the talking heads were in the video, even though their names were shown on screen, and wasn't able to say who the director was (even though this was also mentioned in the video description). On the plus side, Gemini did do an impressive job of summing up the audio of the video. It correctly identified some of the filmmaking challenges that were mentioned throughout, and provided timestamps to them â from looking for a set to represent the Grand Budapest, to filling it with extras. Summarize Interviews Finally, we tried Google Gemini with an interview: Channel 4 in the UK speaking to Charlie Brooker and Siena Kelly about the latest series of Black Mirror (perhaps appropriate for an article on AI). Gemini proved itself very capable at picking out the talking points, and adding timestamps, though of course the whole video is mostly talking. Again though, there's no context about anything outside of the audio or the transcript. Gemini AI couldn't say where the interview took place, or how the participants were acting, or anything else about the visuals of the videoâwhich is worth bearing in mind if you use it yourself. For videos where the answers you want are in the audio of a YouTube video, and its associated transcript, Gemini works really well at summarizing and providing accurate answers (provided the commentators mention when a touchdown is ruled out, as well as when one is scored). For any kind of visual information, you're still going to have to watch the video yourself.|

For Best Results with LLMs, Use JSON Prompt Outputs | HackerNoon
Learn how structured prompt outputs make LLM responses consistent, reliable, and production-readyâwith less guesswork and more control.
This is the fourth part of an ongoing series. See parts 1, 2, and 3. This is the fourth part of an ongoing series. See parts 1, 2, and 3. 1, 2, and 3. 1 1 2 2 3 3 AI Principle IV: Use Structured Prompt Outputs AI Principle IV: Use Structured Prompt Outputs There was a time, a long, long time ago, when LLM APIs had just come out and no one yet knew for sure how to properly interact with them. One of the top problems was extracting multiple outputs from a single prompt response. When LLMs didnât consistently return JSON (and they failed often), you tried persuading the LLM to cooperate by using your best prompt engineering oratory. Those were ancient times. Back then, we traveled on horseback and wrote prompts by candlelight, as electricity hadnât yet been invented. Debugging prompts meant long nights spent squinting at parchment scrolls, hoping the model would return a list instead of a haiku. And if it failed, you had no choice but to sigh deeply, dip your quill in ink, and try again. Ok, I made that last part up. But LLM APIs that couldnât consistently return a JSON response were a real thing and caused loads of issues. It all began to change with structured outputs in November of 2023 - you could now use the OpenAI API to give you a formatted JSON. In 2024, OpenAI also added support for strict structured outputs, which fully guarantees a JSON return. Similar API enhancements have also been added by Anthropic and Google. The time for unstructured prompt outputs has passed, and we are never going back. structured outputs structured outputs Anthropic Anthropic Google Google Benefits Benefits Why is it better to use JSON-structured prompt outputs as opposed to other formats or inventing a custom format? Reduced Error Rate Reduced Error Rate Modern LLMs are fine-tuned to output valid JSON when requestedâit is rare for them to fail even with very complex responses. In addition, many platforms have software-level protections against incorrectly formatted outputs. For example, the OpenAI API throws an exception when a non-JSON is returned when in structured output strict mode. If you use a custom format to return multiple output variables, you will not benefit from this fine-tuning, and the error rate will be much higher. Time will be spent re-engineering the prompt and adding retries. Decoupled Prompts and Code Decoupled Prompts and Code With a JSON output, it's trivial to add another output field, and doing so shouldnât break your existing code. This decouples adding fields to the prompt from changes to the code processing logic. Decoupling can save you time and effort, particularly in cases where prompts are loaded from outside Git; see Principle II: Load LLM Prompts Safely (If You Really Have To). Principle II: Load LLM Prompts Safely (If You Really Have To) Principle II: Load LLM Prompts Safely (If You Really Have To) Simplified System Simplified System Is there a practical reason to use an output format without built-in platform support? It would be easier for both you and the subsequent code contributors to format responses using JSON. Donât reinvent the wheel unless you have to. When NOT to Use Structured Output When NOT to Use Structured Output Single Field Output Single Field Output If your prompt outputs a single field in response, there are no benefits to outputting a JSON. Or are there? Single-variable responses today may become complex responses tomorrow. After spending hours turning one field output prompt into many field output prompts, I now use JSON by default even when only a single field is returned. This saves time later while adding minimal extra complexity upfront. Even when the program logic doesnât need multiple outputs, there are prompt engineering and debugging benefits to adding additional fields. Adding a field that provides an explanation for a response (or cites a source in the documentation) can often significantly improve prompt performance (1). It can also be logged as an explanation for the modelâs decisions. Having the response be JSON from the start makes adding such a field far easier. 1 1 So even if your prompt has a single output variable, consider JSON format as an option. Streaming Response Streaming Response For applications in which latency is critical, streaming LLM endpoints are often used. These allow for parts of the response to be acted on before the entire response is received. This pattern doesnât work well with JSON, so you should use a simple, stream-friendly format instead. For example, if your prompt decides on the action taken by a video game character and the words that the character says, you can encode it as âACTION|SPEECH_TO_READâ and then stream the response with a streaming API, such as OpenAI Streaming API. This will give you far better latency. OpenAI Streaming API OpenAI Streaming API Example Output: WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. WAVE_AT_HERO|Hello, Adventurer! Welcome to my shop. As soon as the action is received, the character begins waving, and text is output as it streams in. JSON lines and other stream-friendly formats can also be used effectively. JSON lines JSON lines Conclusion Conclusion Donât reject the benefits of civilization - use JSON-structured prompt outputs. There are hardly any downsides and it will make your life much easier as LLMs are heavily optimized to return valid JSON responses. Consider using a JSON output even if the extracted data is currently a single field. For streaming endpoints, use JSON lines or a simple custom format.
