Comedian Bill Maher warned former Vice President Gore against comparing President Trump and his actions to those made by leaders in Nazi Germany on Friday. Earlier this week, Gore said the current administration is aiming to “create their own preferred version of reality” in a method that resembles the Nazi's rise to power during World War II at the San Francisco Climate Week. On Friday, Maher pushed back on Gore's view during an episode of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher." “I just think, you know, Nazi is a hard word to use with nuance. So when you bring that word out, I feel like they’re the GOAT of evil,” Maher told Gore, in an appearance highlighted by Mediaite. "And so it just conflates." Gore shot back, arguing he didn't make that harsh of a comparison. “But if you look at what I actually said in that speech, there was a group of German philosophers that went back after the war and conducted a kind of moral autopsy,” Gore said. "And they said, one of them said, that the first step on the descent into hell in that case was, and I quote, 'The conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power." Gore went on to state that Trump’s foreign policy dealings and false claims about climate change draw parallels with the Nazi party’s expansion. “When I see and hear over and over again, I see the the assertion of complete inaccuracies that Ukraine is responsible for starting the war with Russia...," Gore contended. "They keep asserting these things, expecting us to believe that the climate crisis is a hoax invented by the Chinese, that windmills cause cancer, that coal is clean." Trump has long blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for initiating the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 after Russia invaded the country. The president has also expressed skepticism about the severity of climate change over the years and has sought to roll back environmental regulations while in office. "They try to assert with the force of power their own special version of alternative facts,” Gore added. However, Maher, who recently met with Trump at the White House — which was met with some backlash from Democrats — said using the word Nazi offends those who voted for the president. “I guarantee that the side of the country that voted for Trump, they hear Nazi and they just go, 'Oh, you’re calling us Nazis,'” Maher said. “First of all, it’s a bit of a false premise, as bad as they are. And also, it just says to them, 'Well, you just hate us,'” he added. The debate between the talk show host and former vice president comes several days after comedian Larry David slammed Maher for visiting Trump at the White House — comparing the president to Hitler. Maher knocked David over the satirical op-ed published in The New York Times describing a dinner with the leader of the Third Reich and argued its insulting to Jewish people killed in the Holocaust. “I must say, you know — come on, man, Hitler? Nazis? Nobody has been harder about and more prescient, I must say, about Donald Trump than me,” Maher said on the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” podcast, responding to David's op-ed. “I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is.” “Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. And the fact I reported honestly is not a sin either,” he continued. “But you know, to use the Hitler thing, first of all, I just think it’s kind of insulting to 6 million dead Jews. You know, like, that should kind of be in its own place in history.”|

Lucid Dreaming Isn't Sleep or Wakefulness—It’s a New State of Consciousness, Scientists Find

After analyzing many previous studies on lucid dreaming, researchers have defined it as a state that differs significantly from both REM sleep and wakefulness.The awareness of dreaming during a lucid dream is now thought to come from shifts in brain wave activity undergone by several parts of the brain, including the right central lobe, parietal lobe and precuneus.Lucid dreams were also found to have effects similar to psychedelics like LSD.Have you ever had a dream in which you realized you were dreaming? When you become conscious of the fact that you are dreaming, you can take advantage of that knowledge and manipulate the dream. If you want to do something that is physically impossible in the real world, such as flying, you can leap into the air and take flight. Someone who realizes they are trapped in a nightmare can convince themselves to wake up.The state known as lucid dreaming is an unquestionably surreal one, and it just got even more so. A team of researchers—led by Çağatay Demirel from the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Medical Center, the Netherlands—has discovered that lucid dreaming has now been found to be a state of consciousness separate from both wakefulness and REM sleep (the state usually associated with dreams), and is in fact associated with its own unique type of brain activity. They published a study on their findings in the Journal of Neuroscience.“This research opens the door to a deeper understanding of lucid dreaming as an intricate state of consciousness by pointing to the possibility that conscious experience can arise from within sleep itself,” Demirel said in a press release.To identify what sets lucid dreaming apart from the rest of sleep, he and his team pulled previous studies—in which brain activity was measured with EEG sensors—together into what is now the most extensive dataset in this field of sleep research. The researchers then compared brain activity patterns for wakefulness, REM sleep, and lucid dreaming to find that that the eerie self-awareness experienced in lucid dreams has a connection to the electrical rhythms in neurons known as brain waves. Perception and memory processing in the lucid dreaming state were found to be different from non-lucid REM sleep. The consciousness of existing in a dream was associated with with beta waves in the right central lobe (which controls spatial awareness and nonverbal memory) and parietal lobe (which controls the sense of touch and spatial awareness). Beta waves are a type of high-frequency electromagnetic activity in the brain involved in conscious thought processes like solving problems or making decisions. Our consciousness is dominated by beta waves when we are awake.This might explain why there is so much cognitive control in lucid dreams. Dreamers deep in REM sleep have no sense of control over factors like thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, but those in lucid dreaming states do.Demirel also linked gamma waves with lucid dreaming. These are the fastest brain waves, which become visible on an EEG at times when the brain is especially alert and focusing on something. When lucid dreaming begins, gamma waves increase in the right precuneus, which is involved in self-referential thinking—thoughts about ourselves and our lives. When we are awake, we often drift into this type of thinking when our minds wander. Maybe the most mind-bending thing about lucid dreams is that they are, according to the study, similar in the brain to the effects of psychedelic drugs such as LSD and ayahuasca. These types of psychedelic experiences are also associated with the precuneus, whose activity is modified when waking imagery is seen despite having closed eyes (something usually only experienced with psychedelics). Interestingly, however, lucid dreams may even go a few experiential steps past psychedelics. “While psychedelics often lead to a dissolution of ego and decreased self-referential processing […] lucid dreams may actually harness elements of self-awareness and control,” Demirel and his team said in the study.So if you’re capable of lucid dreaming, you’re in for an awesome trip.|

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg has turned heads within the party in recent weeks after he decided to launch a $20 million effort to primary safe House Democrats through his group Leaders We Deserve. Newly elected chair Ken Martin criticized the attempt to influence the outcome of a primary election, urging party officials to stay neutral. McCarthy said this divide ultimately illustrates the significant cracks in the party's ability to move forward on one accord. The ousted House Speaker went on to cite the Florida State Senate Minority Leader’s decision to ditch the party earlier this week as the most recent example of the divides. “He quit the party, became an independent and said the Democratic Party is 'dead.' This is a real concern,” McCarthy said about Jason Pizzo, who changed his registration to no party affiliation. “But also, if you are a [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer [(D-N.Y.)] or a [House Minority Leader] Hakeem [Jeffries (D-N.Y.)], you are not a strong enough leader, they want somebody else,” he continued. The former House Speaker said Democrats are in an “internal fight” and need someone to “capture” the party. McCarthy mentioned Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) as popular members of the party, but dismissed them as "so far left they're outside of the party."|
