This comes after a report that suggests the company could be breaking federal law over the use of methane gas turbines. But for the first time, we're hearing from city leaders who said it's not what you think. Standing before a crowd of hundreds of people at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, State Representative Justin J. Pearson called on other elected officials to take action against Elon Musk's xAI supercomputer. "Why is it we got to march? Why is it we got to protest," Pearson asked. "Why we got to do that when we got people in positions of power who's supposed to do their jobs?" Saturday's town hall comes after a report by a coalition of environmental groups found that xAI is allegedly running more than double the number of gas turbines than it had applied for. The report claims a permit had been filed for xAI to bring in only 15 turbines, but through the use of aerial photos, the group saw 35 methane gas turbines on the South Memphis site. "Protecting air quality is the job. Protecting water quality. That's the job," Pearson said. "If you don't want to do the job, resign." WREG caught up with Memphis Mayor Paul Young, who was speaking at a community forum across town at the same time as the town hall led by Pearson. Mayor Young confirmed his office knew about the additional turbines, but he said there's more to the story. "I've talked to the xAI leadership team," Young said. "There are 35, but there are only 15 that are on. The other ones are stored on the site." He said that according to xAI leadership, the turbines are not being used and are not connected. While addressing an audience, Mayor Young said xAI started using the turbines in September of last year and legally, he said they have one year to operate them without a permit. He said the company is funding and building two substations adjacent to xAI. He added that the company filed for the permits in January because they weren't sure if the substation construction would be complete before the one year is up. "So, they filed for the permits and the first substation has been completed," Young said. "They're looking to bring that online over the next month, and they're working to get the second one completed before September. If not, that's why they need the permit." Pearson has been very vocal about the environmental concerns regarding the facility and the lack of transparency from xAI. Saturday morning, he said he is ready to take action. "If you are interested in going to protest at the Shelby County Health Department or Mayor Lee Harris' office in Downtown, raise your hand," Pearson said. The Shelby County Health Department is hosting an official public comment meeting scheduled for April 25 at Fairley High School.|

What we know about the growing beaver population in Northern California after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reintroduced them in TĂĄsmam KoyĂłm.
Molly Alves carefully stepped through the dry reed grass carpeting TĂĄsmam KoyĂłm, a 2,325-acre valley in Northern California and the ancestral lands of the Mountain Maidu people. The beaver restoration program manager for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stopped next to a sparkling pond just a few feet away from the dome that rose out of the ground, fashioned out of twigs, mud and stone. She glanced over at the structure, listening for the rustling of the semi-aquatic rodents she knew were huddled within. âWe have to be pretty quiet because the beaver family is inside this lodge right now,â Alves said in a video shared by the agency Tuesday. It's where they spend the majority of the winter, leaving only to access their caches of food they store underwater. A year and a half has passed since the historic moment when wildlife officials re-released a family of six beavers to their state habitat â the first time they had returned to their native range in nearly 75 years as part of a major project spearheaded by the CDFW and the Maidu Summit Consortium. Over 400 miles away in the South Fork Tule River deep in the Sierra Nevada, three more groups made their debut for the first time in more than a century when they were subsequently released last year. Now, wildlife officials say the translocated beaver populations are settling into their new homes â and theyâre growing. âNatureâs Swiss Army knifeâ The family in TĂĄsmam KoyĂłm produced two new litters of kits after one of the beavers swam downstream and met another mate already living in the wild. The size of each litter is unknown â âTo date, we have only observed one kit on camera at a time,â Valerie Cook, an environmental program manager for the CDFW, told SFGATE in an email â but they typically rear two to four kits depending on food resource availability. Since then, the paddle-tailed creatures have undertaken âextensive dam-buildingâ projects across the wetland complex. One of these measures nearly 100 meters across and is the largest in the valley that was burned over by the Dixie Fire in 2021, Cook said. One of the groups of beavers in the Tule River also began building on and expanding a dam analog â a habitat management tool that mimics a naturally occurring dam and had been installed prior to their arrival â to help create deeper pool habitat. To Cook, itâs a positive sign: Not only do the dams help retain water on the landscape, extending flows and maintaining aquatic habitats late into the dry season, she said, but they also increase surface water storage, restore riparian habitat, and provide protection for people and wildlife from the effects of climate change, such as drought. Notably, the animals increased the surface water area by 23%, contributing to the formation of wetlands that could slow or stop wildfire from burning across the land and provide more habitat for local mammals, reptiles and amphibians. âBeavers are natureâs Swiss Army knife,â CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham said in the news release. âThe things they can do are amazing.â A ânature-based solutionâ Beavers are endemic to Northern California, and research from historical ecologist Rick Lanman proved the speciesâ roots in the state when he discovered a skull from a beaver that had been living in Saratoga Creek circa 1855. However, their population was practically wiped out during the fur rush in the 1800s, when maritime traders converged in the Bay Area and Californiaâs Central Coast to harvest the valuable chestnut-colored fur from the species, as well as otters, seals, mink and other mammals. By 1912, fewer than a thousand beavers were left in the state. The CDFW translocated beavers to Lexington Reservoir and upper Los Gatos Creek in 1980, and though experts initially thought the semi-aquatic rodents wouldnât utilize the surrounding creeks, the beavers proceeded to chart new territory down to the Guadalupe River, which flows through downtown San Jose and into the South Bay. The animals continued to venture north from there, and the discovery of beavers in Matadero Creek in 2023 marked a major comeback for the species in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, the CDFW recently received $2 million in funding from the state budget to establish a beaver restoration program to better understand how the animals could become a ânature-based solutionâ to restore and conserve watersheds statewide. âBeavers used to be everywhere, but sadly that is no longer the case,â Bonham said in the news release. âOur history treated beavers as nuisances, and we removed them from the landscape. In the past year CDFW working with the Tule River Tribe and the Maidu Summit Consortium brought beavers home to places theyâve been absent over 100 years.â Future translocation projects The survival rate of the newly released beavers is estimated to be between 40% and 60%, with wildlife officials citing factors such as predation, illness due to underlying causes such as pneumonia and capture-related stressors. âWe have confirmed 6 mortalities to date, but presume 11,â Cook told SFGATE in an email. The figure may seem grim, but itâs relatively optimistic in comparison with overall survival rates in other beaver translocation projects in the Northern Hemisphere, which are estimated to be around 30%, according to unpublished data from the CDFW. Three of the confirmed â and seven of the presumed â mortalities came from one site with âan extremely high density of predatorsâ active in the area, Cook said, and because most of them were related to naturally occurring events in the ecosystem, the agency considers the translocations to be âsuccessful with good survival rates.â â[We] expect to see increases from here as we continue to learn and adapt,â she said. The CDFW is eyeing future beaver translocations in collaboration with California landowners who can authorize the release of the animals on their properties. So far, one project proposal has come through from a landowner in central Marin County, Cook said, but the agency is still in the process of determining which reintroduction projects may be implemented as soon as later this year â and where. Cook and her colleagues plan to host a public webinar in May for people who are interested in learning more about the process of identifying suitable project areas, developing and submitting proposals, and the CDFWâs selection process. In the coming months, Cook said she suspects she will receive additional project proposals from landowners throughout the Bay Area and may begin pursuing partners for implementation in those watersheds. âHowever, itâs worth explicitly noting that potential conflicts with infrastructure and neighboring landowners is one of the potential constraints that will dictate where projects can be implemented,â she told SFGATE earlier this year. âSo that is a factor that will surely come in to play in the Bay Area.â The agency is also attempting to better understand the current distribution of the species throughout the state.
