DAVID MARCUS: Sen. Spartacusâ filibuster folly was played-out performative nonsense
Fox News
Columnist David Marcus writes that Sen. Cory Booker's recod-breaking filibuster was a performative stunt and a perfect metaphor for the Democrats' impotence.
Though it is a competitive category, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., may be the perfect personification of the utter political impotence of todayâs Democratic Party. On Monday and Tuesday, for reasons that remain unclear, Senator Spartacus took the floor of the upper house and talked for over 24 hours straight in a filibuster that could have come out of a movie. CORY BOOKER STAFFER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY CARRYING UNLICENSED HANDGUN AT CAPITOL In fact, it did come out of a movie, one called "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," in which Jimmy Stewart played a senator making a marathon speech that came out 85 years ago. That is exactly how old Bookerâs performative nonsense felt this week. Further precedent for the talk-a-thon came from segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, whose 1957 record for longwindedness Booker smashed. For anyone paying attention, and frankly, that was likely a very small number of people, the question while Booker prattled on and on was why? Was there some purpose to this diatribe, or was it essentially a political TikTok challenge? Call me lazy if you want, but in preparing this column I did not actually watch or read all 25 hours of Babblin' Bookerâs remarks. If there were five people in the world who did, I would be shocked. From the highlights, so to speak, we mostly see flailing arms and crazy-eyed proclamations that the Trump administration "is not normal," and a bizarre confession that might have been the performanceâs most telling moment. Was there some purpose to this diatribe, or was it essentially a political TikTok challenge? "I confess that I have been imperfect." Booker solemnly intoned. "I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'" Two things stand out here. One is the religiosity of his rhetoric. He could almost be at Mass beating his chest three times as he spoke. The other is the idea that extraordinary measures must be taken to stop Trump, a kind of "by any means necessary" approach. Even the use of the filibuster itself betrayed this. After all, not long ago, Democrats insisted that this archaic Senate procedure is racist and must be abolished. It was filibuster-friendly former Democratic-turned Independent Arizona Sen. Krysten Sinema who had the last laugh, quipping on X, Tuesday, "Maybe it isnât an old Jim Crow relic, after all." Setting aside the situational ethics at work regarding when a filibuster is or isnât racist, the more dangerous aspect of this is Bookerâs insistence that our nation faces some dire peril in the form of Trump that must be thwarted, even with "non-traditional" methods. Booker, importantly, did not come up as a fire-breathing radical. As mayor of Newark, N.J., he was thought of as something of a centrist. Back then he made goofy YouTube videos with the Republican former governor of the Garden State, Chris Christie. What has occasioned this change, aside from an almost certain second run for president, is that Bookerâs wing of the Democratic Party has decided that President Donald Trump is such an existential threat to America and all it stands for, that he cannot be worked with and must be politically destroyed. This attitude on its face rejects the will of the voters who put Trump in office, but it also ignores the millions of Americans who did not vote for Trump but still want the Democrats to work with him to solve problems, not to keep screaming for four more years. The reason that we see the old-timey protests today, where the well-worn songs of the struggles of the sixties are sung, is the same reason that Booker tore this cheesy filibuster page out of an ancient Hollywood playbook. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION The Democrats are trying to evoke a feeling from the use of these old symbolic forms, but the problem is that Jimmy Stewartâs iconic cinematic speech and the songs of Joan Baez were authentic expressions of their time. Today, there is no life in those forms; they are mere empty shells. Perhaps the Democrats are reaping what they sowed. Perhaps when you spend your time tearing down traditions, toppling statues, and severing connections to our own past, as progressives are so wont to do, then the symbols of that past lose all of their power. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Sorry, Senator Booker, your record-breaking speech was not brave or inspiring, rather it was tired, played out and did not advance the interests of the American people one iota. The time for performative stunts is over, the time to work with President Trump to help all Americans is at hand. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM DAVID MARCUS|

DAVID MARCUS: Small-town America shrugs off tariff talk, puts faith in Trump
Fox News
Columnist David Marcus visits small towns to find out what local Trump supporters think about looming tariffs.
For arguably the first time in his political career, President Donald Trump is asking his voters to take a big leap of faith regarding his administrationâs tariff policy. I decided to travel to small-town Maryland and Ohio to try to find out just how much slack Trump voters are willing to cut him amid the uncertainty of this trade policy. What I found is that Trump has a lot more runway to play with before his support may or may not start to crumble. SEN. RAND PAUL: TERMINATE THE TRUMP TARIFFS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Cumberland, Md., is a charming and sleepy hamlet near the Pennsylvania border which, like so many in the area, grew up around the railroad, and it shows. Trestles and 19th-century buildings abound, freight trains cut their fearless way right through the small downtown. There I met Fred and his son Chris, who were eating dinner next to me at a local establishment. Fredâs bright red "Trump Was Right About Everything" hat seemed like a bit of a clue that he had voted for the president, so we got to talking. "None," Fred told me when I asked if he was starting to have any doubts. The retired Navy veteran was especially pleased by the selection of Pete Hegseth as secretary of the Department of Defense. "Heâs a serviceman," Fred told me. "He can handle it." I hear that from about nine out of 10 vets I talk to. Fred's son Chris, also a Navy vet, was a bit more circumspect. On the subject of tariffs and more broadly inflation, he said, "Trump ran on making things cheaper, not more expensive, but Iâm still willing to trust him." "Nothing happens overnight and without work," came some fatherly advice from Fred. Now Chris has a point. Trump absolutely ran on imposing tariffs, but it was never clear if that was a negotiating tactic or an overall economic policy. We still donât really know. Deals could still be cut, but Trump did not run on short-term economic pain, something all of his supporters I talked to admitted, but also accepted. Later that night, I met four guys in their 30s, who work in the local energy industry, and once again, three of them were entirely on board. "I donât think he has done enough," one quipped sarcastically about the avalanche of actions taken by Trump. Another said Trump's ac tions have strengthened his support. "A couple years ago, I was not politically aligned with either party, but now that Trump has become the president, and Elon is trying to eliminate, with the DOGE, the fraud and the illogical spending that is happening, I am totally for that." He added, "I am more happy now that I voted for Trump than I was when I voted for Trump." About two hours northwest of Cumberland lies tiny Columbiana, Ohio. Unlike the cozy Cumberland nestled in the mountains, Columbiana is a small place more of strip malls than town squares, but not without its own charming haunts to discover. One of those is Factory 46, a restaurant and bar tucked behind one of the ubiquitous malls, where Joe, in his 20âs who has lived here his whole life, slings the drinks and grub. There I met another father and son, again in the same industry, this time coal mining, and this time it was the dad who let me ask him a few questions on video. For both of them, removing the tax on overtime was a huge issue. "Itâs killing the working man," the dad told me, and when I asked if he thought Trump could really do it, he absolutely did. He also told me, "Iâd love to see him bring the coal industry back. Obama took it from us. I can understand gas, we need gas, it's awesome, but we need both." The theme of no regrets remained steady for these two, as it did for Joeâs mom, who came in to visit a little while after. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION One thing that became clear, especially in Ohio, is that when Democrats and the media scream about how tariffs will tank the stock market and make foreign goods more expensive, many think our so-called prosperity came at the cost of domestic manufacturing and at the expense of towns like theirs. The voters in these small towns very much see themselves as the losers in the game of globalism, and they are not too upset about its rules being changed. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Trumpâs poll numbers have dipped a bit. Heâs about two points underwater, though still higher than he was this time in his first term. And based on my conversations with his supporters this week, I do not expect a sharp decline anytime soon. No, his people are willing to give Trump time, but make no mistake, in the long run, they are expecting results. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM DAVID MARCUS|

Fight
Google Books
It was the election America dreaded, a rematch between the two oldest men to serve as president. But somewhere along the way, the 2024 battle for the White House became the most jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, head-turning contest in American history. The ride was so wild that it forced a sitting president to drop his re-election bid, a once and future president to survive felony convictions and a would-be assassin's bullet, and a vice president, unexpectedly thrust into the arena, to mount an unprecedented 107-day campaign to lead the free world. Fight is the backstage story of bloodsport politics in its rawest form--the clawing, backstabbing, and rabble-rousing that drove Donald Trump into the White House and Democrats into the wilderness. At every turn, the combatants went for the jugular, whether they were facing down rivals in the other party or their own. Bestselling authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes give readers their first graphic view of the characters, their motivations, and their innermost thoughts as they battled to claim the ultimate prize and define a political era. Based on real-time interviews with more than 150 insiders--from the Trump, Harris, and Biden inner circles, as well as party leaders and operatives--Fight delivers the vivid and stunning tale of an election unlike any other. In the end, Trump overcame voters' concerns about his personal flaws by tapping into a deep vein of dissatisfaction with the direction of the country. At the same time, Democrats struggled to connect with an electorate that felt gaslit by Biden's insistence that he had delivered economic prosperity--and his pledge to be a "bridge" president. He tore his party asunder, leaving destroyed personal relationships in his wake, as he clung to power. And when he gave it up, he kneecapped Harris by demanding unprecedented loyalty from her. As Allen and Parnes have done in the #1 New York Times bestseller Shattered and Lucky, they provide readers with a skeleton key to the rooms where it all happened, revealing a story more shocking than previously reported. |

Trump Is the First Eurosceptic U.S. President, and Thatâs a Good Thing
The Heritage Foundation
Donald Trump has not held back from blasting the European Union since returning to the White House. In the first cabinet meeting of his second term, Trump bluntly stated that the EU was âformed in order to screw the United Statesâ before previewing 25 per cent tariffs against Brussels. The contrast with Americaâs last president, Joe Biden, and his vice president, Kamala Harris, could not be greater. |
