President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the dismantling of a government-funded news agency called Voice of America.
President Donald Trump ordered the dismantling of news agency Voice of America, the U.S.'s state-funded media outlet that Trump has railed against for promoting biased media reports. "Voice of America has been out of step with America for years. It serves as the Voice for Radical America and has pushed divisive propaganda for years now," a senior White House official told Fox News Digital. Trump signed an executive order on Friday that commands the dismantling of seven government offices, including the United States Agency for Global Media, which is the parent company of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. "The non-statutory components and functions of the following governmental entities shall be eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law, and such entities shall reduce the performance of their statutory functions and associated personnel to the minimum presence and function required by law," the EO reads. MUSK AND DOGE HAVE ANOTHER PERFECT TARGET: MORE TAXPAYER-FUNDED, ANTI-AMERICAN MEDIA Kari Lake, whom Trump named as the VOA's next chief in December, is currently serving as senior advisor at the U.S. Agency for Global Media and told employees to "check your email" for more information on their employment futures. "The President has issued an Executive Order titled Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy. It affects USAGM and its outlets VOA and OCB. If you are an employee of the agency please check your email immediately for more information," Lake, who is also a former news anchor and Republican Arizona political candidate, posted to X. OCB refers to the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is a Spanish language, government-funded radio and TV broadcaster that operates Radio and TV MartĂ in Miami, Florida. Employees received an email on Saturday detailing that their employment was terminated, the Wall Street Journal reported, though it is unclear how many employees were affected. The U.S. Agency for Global Media and Lake issued a press release on Saturday saying the agency is "not salvageable." "From top-to-bottom this agency is a giant rot and burden to the American taxpayerâa national security risk for this nationâand irretrievably broken. While there are bright spots within the agency with personnel who are talented and dedicated public servants, this is the exception rather than the rule," the press release said. WHITE HOUSE SAYS FEDERALLY FUNDED NEWS SERVICE 'SPENDS YOUR MONEY TO PROMOTE FOREIGN PROPAGANDA' The seven government agencies targeted in the order include: the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service; the U.S. Agency for Global Media; the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in the Smithsonian Institution; the Institute of Museum and Library Services; the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness; the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund; and the Minority Business Development Agency. Voice of America has come under scrutiny for promoting biased content, including for allegedly "sanitizing" Hamas when the outlet neglected to note in an article in January that residents in Gaza cheered the terrorist group when it brought out coffins holding the remains of Israeli hostages, including children. TRUMP ANNOUNCES MORE NOMINATIONS, INCLUDING KARI LAKE AS DIRECTOR OF VOICE OF AMERICA BROADCAST "Letâs get the facts straight: Hamas paraded the dead bodies of innocent Israelis, including two children, in front of cheering crowds. American taxpayers should not be paying the salaries of Hamas apologists who spout terrorist propaganda," House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, R-Fla., told National Review at the time of VOA's coverage. Just days after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, VOA told its employees to "avoid calling Hamas and its members terrorists, except in quotes," National Review reported that year. TAXPAYER-FUNDED VOICE OF AMERICA UNDER FIRE FOR SHARING CAMPAIGN-LIKE BIDEN VIDEO The government-funded news outlet has also come under fire for other stories across the years, including running an article in 2020 that asked, "What Is 'White Privilege' and Whom Does It Help?" It was also criticized over publishing a story and video that was compared to a Biden campaign video in 2020, and downplaying the Hunter Biden laptop controversy that rocked the 2020 presidential campaign in its waning days. Celebrate Saint Patrick by chasing censors out of Ireland

Todayâs Ireland, like much of Europe, is in crisis, turning away from our shared values by embracing censorship over freedom of speech.
With the arrival of Saint Patrickâs Day, our nation's close affinity to Ireland was on full display in the White House as President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance hosted Irish Prime Minister MicheĂĄl Martin. We are two countries joined by blood and tradition. Of course, there are tensions over trade conflicts with the European Union and Ireland, which quickly came to the surface in the meeting. In the end, however, we are likely to resolve those trade problems. The fact is that we need each other, both economically and culturally. Yet, there is one chasm between the two countries that not only remains wide but is widening: the gap between how each country handles free speech. And Martin would much prefer to talk about Irish socks than Irish censorship. Ironically, before he became associated with green beer and leprechauns, Saint Patrick was a symbol of freedom of speech. Although there is no evidence beyond pious legend that he chased snakes out of Ireland (there likely never were snakes in Ireland), he did chase slavery and human sacrifice out of the country, despite the initial unpopularity of his reforms. A former slave himself, St. Patrick's public statements against slavery, paganism and longstanding traditions were viewed as harmful to social tranquility and harmony. Does that sound familiar? Today, Ireland, like many of our European allies, is shredding free speech with laws criminalizing viewpoints and regulating speech by its content. âIrish eyes [may be] smiling,â but Irish tongues are increasingly silent in the face of government investigations and prosecutions. The growing conflict between the U.S. and the Irish could not be more telling. Irish immigrants, including some of my relatives, came to this country to live freely, and many soon became lawyers fighting for individual rights. Just before Martin's arrival in Washington, his government was hammering Elon Musk and conservative sites in the latest crackdown on free speech. The most recent flashpoint was a small pro-life platform called Gript, a rallying point for many in his Catholic country who oppose abortion. The government demanded that X turn over Griptâs data on sources and users. An Irish court on June 13, 2024, sought the data on private accounts as well as IP addresses and messages linked to Gript coverage of the April protests against Ireland's housing of documented migrants. The violence in those protests gave the Irish government another justification to curtail free speech. In yet another defining moment for Musk on free speech, he not only resisted but informed Irish citizens what the government was doing. That transparency and opposition sent the Irish government into a full-on rage. After the arrest of 34 people and extensive property damage in the anti-immigration protests, the government moved to expand on its already draconian anti-free-speech laws. A new bill was introduced criminalizing âpreparing or possessing material likely to incite violence or hatred against persons on account of their protected characteristics.â That includes any material concerning national or ethnic origin, as well as protected characteristics including âtransgender and a gender other than those of male and female.â The bill included crimes relating to âxenophobiaâ and can be committed merely by the "public dissemination or distribution of tracts, pictures or other material.â Then-Prime Minister Leo Varadkar declared his intent to âmodernize laws against hatredâ by criminalizing speech that his government decides is âincitement.â He stated an intention to not only stop those engaged in violence but those who say things that might arouse their anger. The powerful Irish Green Party was all-in with censorship and speech prosecutions. As Green Party Sen. Pauline OâReilly admitted, âWe are restricting freedom, but weâre doing it for the common good.â It is a familiar pattern. In my book, âThe Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage,â I discuss how ârage rhetoricâ is often exploited by governments as an excuse for âstate rage.â Citing false claims made in the protests, the government declared a new round of crackdowns on viewpoints it considers harmful or misleading. Irelandâs national police, known as the Garda SĂochĂĄna, ordered X to produce extensive data linked to Gript Mediaâs official X account, @griptmedia. It wanted to see not just information identifying users but also private messages and addresses that would have revealed the media outlet's confidential sources and communications. Ireland reflects the free fall of free speech across Europe. Germany, France and the United Kingdom have followed the same path of the ever-expanding regulation and criminalization of free speech, including statements deemed by the government to be "disinformation." This week, I will be speaking at the World Forum in Berlin, Germany, on the anti-free speech movement, led in no small part by the European Union. Anti-free speech groups and figures are also gathering, particularly after Vance's historic speech recently in Munich criticizing our allies for their abandonment of free speech. After years of largely unimpeded growth, the anti-free speech movement is facing its first serious impediments following Musk's purchase of Twitter and the new American defense of free speech. Musk has borne the brunt of the counter campaign. By breaking away from the other social media companies, Musk's X defied the EU and its censor. He was threatened not only with financial ruin but also with actual arrest unless he restored the censorship system. The left in the U.S. and Europe targeted his companies and his revenue. Recently, Tesla dealerships and charging stations have been vandalized and even set on fire. In Ireland, Martin denounced Musk and objected to âthe degree to which, under the cover of free speech, it essentially is allowing ⊠unacceptable material in terms of hate, bile and attacks, and so on.â Again raising the Dublin riots, he said changes have to be made to protect âdemocracy and society.â In other words, free speech is endangering society. This has been the sirenâs call of censorship throughout history. Despite this history, there is reason to be optimistic. The Irish government was forced to withdraw its draconian legislation due to a groundswell of opposition from young voters, including within Martinâs party. Free Speech Ireland celebrated the defeat by the two main parties, which âmiscalculated in what they think young people want.â It turns out that it is still difficult to get a free people to give up freedom. The defeat of the Irish legislation was perhaps only a temporary victory. But for the free speech community, it was a rare, positive moment in dark times. It raised the possibility, on this Saint Patrick's Day, that we just might be able to chase censorship, like slavery, from the Emerald Isle. All Life on Earth Comes From One Single Ancestor. And It's So Much Older Than We Thought.

Scientists have pushed back LUCAâs origin by hundreds of millions of years.
All life on Earth can be traced back to a Last Universal Common Ancestor, or LUCA. A study suggests that this organism likely lived on Earth only 400 million years after its formation. Further analysis also shows that this life form likely sported an early immune system, which means it was probably fighting off viruses. Life on Earth had to begin somewhere, and scientists think that âsomewhereâ is LUCAâor the Last Universal Common Ancestor. True to its name, this prokaryote-like organism represents the ancestor of every living thing, from the tiniest of bacteria to the grandest of blue whales. While the Cambrian Explosion kickstarted complex life in a major way some 530 million years, the true timeline of life on Earth is much longer. For years, scientists have estimated that LUCA likely arrived on the scene some 4 billion years, which is only 600 million years after the planetâs formation. But a study from an international team of scientists pushes that timeline back even further to some 4.2 billion years ago, while also discovering some fascinating details about what life for LUCA mightâve been like. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Ecology Evolution. The paper reads:âThe common ancestry of all extant cellular life is evidenced by the universal genetic code, machinery for protein synthesis, shared chirality of the almost-universal set of 20 amino acids and use of ATP as a common energy currency. As such, our understanding of LUCA impacts our understanding of the early evolution of life on Earth. Was LUCA a simple or complex organism? What kind of environment did it inhabit and when?âTo zero in on exactly when LUCA appeared on Earth, scientists had to work backward. First, the team compared genes in living species and counted the mutations that have occurred since sharing a common ancestor with LUCA. Using a genetic equation based on the time of separation between species, the team worked out that LUCA mustâve been mucking around on Earth as early as 400 million years after its creation, which puts this organism smack in the middle of the hellish geologic nightmare known as the Hadean Eon. âThe evolutionary history of genes is complicated by their exchange between lineages,â University of Bristolâs Edmund Moody, the lead author of the study, said in a press statement. âWe have to use complex evolutionary models to reconcile the evolutionary history of genes with the genealogy of species.âNot satisfied with just learning its age, the team took things a step further and retraced the physiological characteristics of living species to understand what LUCA mustâve been like 4.2 billion years agoâand the results gave some surprising answers. The scientists estimate that while LUCA was a simple prokaryote, it likely had an immune system, meaning it was already fighting off primordial viruses. âItâs clear that LUCA was exploiting and changing its environment, but it is unlikely to have lived alone,â University of Exeterâs Tim Lenton, a co-author of the study, said in a press statement. âIts waste would have been food for other microbes, like methanogens, that would have helped to create a recycling ecosystem.âWhile LUCA is the oldest common ancestor we know of, scientists still donât understand how life evolved from its very origins to the early communities of which LUCA is a part. Further studies will need to dive deeper into this primordial history and uncover exactly how you, me, and every other living thing, came to be.|
